Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

State ownership of mineral in the ground is not newthe Regalian Right is an ancient concept. And the compulsory purchase of land and the minerals beneath it by the State or a body approved by the State (Fitzgerald, 1952) was a principle well established and enforced in practice over a hundred years ago, when such powers became a practical necessity during the period of railway building in Britain and elsewhere:The acquisition of mineral properties which stand in the way of public construction projects still goes on. But in recent years nationalization is being increasingly undertaken as part of the planned use of national resources, for the closer regulation of economic activities, or merely, so it would seem, as a matter of political expediency or national pride. For instance, the unsevered coal in Britain came under State ownership in 1938 in an attempt to simplify a complex pattern of freehold titles which were impedingplanned mining operations. Later, unsevered minerals became a factor in negotiations arising under various town and country planning acts. The acquisition of the Rio Tinto mines by the Spanish Government implies political aspirations. Northparkes Mines is located 27 km northwest of Parkes in central west New South Wales. The E26 deposit is the largest of all defined to-date in the area, containing over 50 per cent of Northparkes' resources and reserves. The combination of orebody geometry and geotechnical characteristics provide ideal conditions for the block cave method of mining of the first lift of the E26 deposit. Although this method of underground mining has been used for decades in other countries, E26 is the first example of its use in Australia. Copper-gold mineralisation at Northparkes is related to quartz monzonite porphyries that have intruded coeval Ordovician volcanics. Sulphide mineralisation (dominantly bornite and chalcopyrite) occurs principally within quartz veins associated with the porphyry intrusions. Veining and mineralisation occurs within both the porphyries and volcanics. To optimise the recovery of a resource within a block cave mine, a good understanding of the rock mass and ore flow characteristics is essential. These have a significant effect on the fragmentation size and range and on parameters such as the drawzone spacing, height of interaction zone and dilution entry. As ore within a cave column moves and mixes when material is extracted from below and beside it, the total reserve extracted is unique for a particular draw strategy/production history. Until recently, reserve estimates and production schedules were based on the application of a uniform dilution factor to the tabulated resource. However, given the complicated flow and mixing within the cave column, such a simplistic approach can produce erroneous results. Northparkes Mines purchased and sponsored the upgrading of a commercially available software package specifically developed for modelling removal of resource blocks under caving conditions. This Gemcom software package, PC-BC, has been used for mine planning, reserve reporting and production scheduling. Blocks within it resource block model are converted into a mineable reserve taking into account mixing and dilution during depletion of drawcolumns (by horizontal and vertical redistribution of insitu tonnage and metal). As PC-BC gives individual drawpoint reserves, it can be used during the planning stage to determine whether or not a drawpoint is economic. For E26 Lift I an optimal layout containing 130 drawpoints has been developed based on a nominal 14 m x 14 m drawpoint spacing and a 0.8 per cent equivalent copper (eCu) cut-off grade. Annual production schedules for the depletion of material above this layout are based on: I higher tonnage removal from higher grade drawpoints in the early years of production; and 2 drawpoint production rates proportional to the total tonnage of orr remaining in the drawcolumn up to the optimal height of draw tier subsequent years. The reserve is tabulated from the combined annual production schedules over the life of the lift. The pre-mining reserve for Lift I of E26 is 26.6 Mt at 1.43 per cent copper and 0.39 g/t gold, of which approximately 23.4 Mt will be extracted under caving conditions. By scaling down the annual production schedule, weekly drawpoint tonnage calls can be given for short-tern production scheduling.

Block caving is becoming a more widely adopted mining method allowing for underground massive low grade orebodies to be extracted economically. Underbreak during cave propagation is difficult to predict in terms of recovery and is not well-researched due to the small number of caving operations. During mining of E26 Lift 2 (E26L2) block cave at CMOC Northparkes Mines, a wedge of high grade material failed to cave, even with the assistance of preconditioning and subsequent attempts to induce caving. The ultimate solution for recovery of the uncaved wedge was the establishment of the E26 sublevel cave (SLC), which commenced mining in 2015, with production following in 2016. The SLC provides approximately 1Mtpa to supplement the lowering grade of the current E48 block cave feed. Applying the sublevel caving methodology to recover block cave underbreak has proven challenging. The impact of the caving stresses and preconditioning of the wedge have caused production limitations requiring continual remediation throughout production of the E26 SLC. The dependence on remediation work created a roadblock to implementing precharging as the prevalence of brow loss raised concerns over the inability to hook up the charged ring. In 2018, a wireless initiation trial was completed in the E26 SLC over 24 rings. The trial showed that precharging was achievable in this environment and greatly improved the safety of charge up personnel.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the scope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the scope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this Mine.

Low-enthalpy geothermal groundwater resources occur at relatively shallow depths in the Upper Cretaceous/1'ertiary sedimentary sequence in the on-shore Gippsland Basin. The main stratigraphic unit containing hot groundwater is the Latrobe Group. Groundwater temperatures in the range 30 to 70¦C have been recorded from depths between 500 and 1000 m. The hottest groundwater is in the Latrobe Valley and Lake Wellington depressions. Geothermal gradients in these areas range from less than 2¦C/100 m to over 10¦C/100 m (compared to a world average of about 3¦C/100 m). A number of theories have been advanced to explain the geothermal anomalies including exothermic reaction such as oxidation of coal, mixing with deeper, hotter groundwater and high geothermal fluxes along fault zones. Variations in geothermal gradients can also result from type and thickness (and hence thermal conductivities) of the sedimentary pile, depth to consolidated basement rocks, and influence of groundwater flow patterns including proximity to recharge zones. The hot groundwater in the Gippsland Basin has substantial potential as a source of energy for direct heat applications such as process heating, space and water heating for buildings, and agricultural and aquaculture. Geothermal energy has a number of environmental advantages over traditional sources of energy. It is clean, safe, causes minimal land disturbances and in most cases is naturally renewable.

Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUMAnimal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

After a snap-shot survey of water quality of streams draining various coal measures carried out in 2000 - 2001, West Coast Regional Council expanded its monitoring programme to better establish the condition of streams draining coal mining areas and to characterise the variability of water quality with respect to stream flow. Samples were collected for water quality indicators such as pH, sulphate, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen as well as macro-invertebrates, fish and assessments of stream habitat. Water quality sampling was carried out at 27 sites on 21 streams located from Page Stream near Seddonville in the north, to Seven Mile Creek near Dunollie in the South, and to Garvey Creek east of Reefton. There was relatively low variability of pH, conductivity and sulphate concentrations at most of the sites sampled. Conductivity and sulphate concentrations reduced with increasing flow and pH generally increased. Significant effects on macro-invertebrate and fish populations were identified at several of the sites where water quality sampling was undertaken. Of the water quality parameters tested, macro-invertebrates were mostly affected by pH. Although not sampled directly (conductivity was used as a surrogate) heavy metal concentration may explain some of the variation in macro-invertebrate communities. Three creeks affected by mine drainage were sampled for fish and no fish were present. Fish appear to be more sensitive to acid rock drainage that invertebrates. Using data from this survey and other studies conducted in the region, the total length of stream that is actually or highly likely to be adversely affected by acid rock drainage was estimated at 125 km. This figure is useful as a gauge as to the magnitude of the issue in this region and for setting of priorities for remediation. However, as it is only an estimate based on limited sampling sites, it should be used with caution.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

Your Excellency, on behalf of the Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and, indeed, on behalf of everyone present, I extend to you a welcome, and our thanks for your gracious acceptance of the invitation to be here to-day and, later on, to present Honorary Membership Certificates. I also welcome the several official representatives of our Allies, of Great Britain and our sister Dominions.To Messrs. E. C. Driffield and E. J. Rigby, two of the original Foundation Members, who are with us to-day, I extend greetings.The present occasion is opportune to express, on behalf of a representative body of professional men, deep appreciation of the sacrifice which His Majesty the King has made, and will continue to make, by appointing His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester as Governor General of Australia and, therefore, His Majesty's senior personal representative in this country.I suppose, that as the primary reason for our assembly to-day is to celebrate the Fiftieth Year of the Institute's existence, I should properly on this occasion, give an account of its history and development. However, as this subject was ably covered by Mr. L. V. Waterhouse, in his Presidential Address in 1938, I trust I may be excused for selecting some other subject. I shall, therefore, exercise my privilege as President and give you a short history of the Mining and Metallurgical Industry of this country with special reference to its effect on the development of the Commonwealth and on the national economy. I apologize in advance for any statistics which I inflict upon you; some of these will be three or four years out of date, because of censorship restrictions. I shall as far as possible refer firstly to the industry prior to and including 1893, the Institute's foundation year, and then to subsequent development.Australia, is pre-eminently a pastoral and agricultural country and it leads the world in the production of wool. Nevertheless, it has an international reputation as a producer of gold and various metals and of minetal products.The development of gold mining in the decade 1840-50 was an epoch-making event in Australia's history, because, to quote one writer's apt phrase, "it precipitated Australia into nationhood." It was certainly responsible for a rapid increase in population. Thus, during the period 1841-1861 the population of Australia increased fourfold, from 221,000 to 1,170,000.The effect of the discovery of gold in Western Australia was even more striking. In 1890 the population of that State was 49,000 and in 1900 it was 180,000.Statistics in respect of gold are reasonably complete, even for the years prior to Federation, and it is interesting to note that the gold declared as...

Thirty mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil, water and mineral samples from the Groote Eylandt Mining Company mine site were approximately three times more effective in biodegrading manganese dioxide (34± 18 mg Mn++/1/day) than sixteen purified strains (11 ± 10 mg Mn++/1/day) isolated from the primary enrichment cultures. Two pure bacterial genera identified as a Pseudomonad and a Bacillus, with an excess MnOz and nutrient, were able to dissolve 106 mg Mn++/litre/day in mixed culture compared with 29 mg Mn++/litre/day when grown separately.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. The best practice strategies described herein have been based on the fundamentals of a sound asset management framework:a phased approach to the development of Asset Management methodology and processeseffective implementation of programmed maintenance routinesmanaging asset condition data collected from various sourcesefficient analysis of asset data and management by exceptioninterfacing asset management data with Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Electronic Management Systems (EMS) systemstips to assist with maximising asset performance.CITATION:Welsh, A L and Newling, P S, 2015.
