The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Late-Archean banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are less well understood compared to the larger Paleoproterozoic, Superior-type BIFhosted deposits of the Hamersley Province. The Weld Range greenstone belt, in the Murchison Domain of the Yilgarn Craton, hosts two Archean, high-grade deposits, Madoonga (68 Mt resource at 57.7 wt per cent Fe) and Beebyn (62 Mt resource at 59.6 wt per cent Fe, ASX announcement 2008). Five main types of high-grade (>55 wt per cent Fe) iron mineralisation at Weld Range each display characteristic grades, tonnage, and contaminant levels, which affect exploration strategies and beneficiation methods:1. ‘Residual’ ore formed as a result of two generations of hypogene alteration of BIF. The first alteration phase replaced silica-rich bands with siderite and/or Fe-rich dolomite; the second phase involved the removal of carbonate gangue minerals and the concentration of residual Fe oxide-rich bands in the BIF via volume reduction. The product is a high-grade, high-tonnage Fe orebody, with minor contaminants.2. Magnetite-bearing shear and fault zones cut BIF along lithological contacts. These zones of secondary magnetite formed as a result of the addition of hypogene magnetite via the circulation of Fe-rich, hypogene hydrothermal fluids through BIF. This type of mineralisation produces narrow (low-tonnage), high-grade magnetite-rich ore zones with high levels of contaminants (eg SiO2, Al2O3) due to the difficulty in mining these zones.3. Specular haematite ± quartz-bearing shear and fault zones cut residual orebodies and magnetite bearing structures. They share similar characteristics to magnetite-bearing structures.4. Goethite-haematite supergene ore zones are controlled by brittle faults that cut BIF. These faults promoted the flow of supergene fluids through BIF and resulted in large ore zones with variable Fe grades and contaminants.5. Detrital deposits comprise transported BIF fragments and are intensely goethite-haematite supergene-altered. These orebodies are locally extensive, with moderate Fe grades.

There are two mechanisms in the flo- tation process by which particles are transported from the pulp to the con- centrate: bubble-mineral aggregation and entrainment. It is the chemical processes which occur in the pulp which are critical to the success of flotation since they control the floatability of different min- erals and the selectivity which can be obtained. However, these chemical pro- cesses are so complex that metallurgists are still limited in their ability to predict the floatability of particles in industrial circuits by consideration of the minerals present and the chemical environment. The alternative approach to understand- ing flotation is to examine the behaviour of minerals in industrial flotation pro- cesses, to recognise similarities and differences, and to define the "laws" which appear to apply. Using this ap- proach it has been found that minerals float at a rate which is proportional to their concentration in the pulp, and that the rate of flotation of different min- erals is influenced by variables which' affect the pulp or the froth phase. The ultimate application of this approach is the use of models for circuit simulation purposes. It is this alternative approach which is the theme of this paper. One of the most important problems in understanding the technology of flotation has been in defining the characteristics of the particles being floated. Particles entering flotation vary widely in size and mineral composition, and different par- ticle types float at different rates. These rates do not change uniformly as operating variables change. The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

The uranium grade in roll front deposits is the result of successive processes that can be summarised in two steps. First a sedimentary phase, which gives the deposit support, then an oxidation-reduction phenomenon, which leads to the uranium deposit itself. In order to simulate such a deposit, it is important to mimic these different phases. The final aim of such a study is to localise the uranium itself and to reproduce the internal heterogeneity of the orebody in order to simulate the recovery process. The idea in this paper is not to reproduce a genetic approach but to consider the final image of the deposit. Three approaches are proposed. The first one consists of simulating the facies of the sedimentary deposit. The second approach reproduces the distribution of facies resulting from oxidation phenomenon (reduced or oxidised facies). The third approach consists of simulating the mineralisation at the interface of reduced and oxidised areas using the definition of a new data set determined by the grade values. At the end of each approach, the uranium grade could be simulated facies by facies according to the corresponding distribution characteristics. The plurigaussian method dedicated to random set simulations is well-suited for the facies simulations of deposits resulting from several sedimentary processes whether correlated or not. In this paper, the benefit of this method is demonstrated in an actual case study.

In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.

Results are presented which demonstrate the feasibility of employing electrolytic membrane technology to process leach liquors derived from alkaline pressure leaching of scheelite concentrates and to recover and recyle sodium carbonate. Thus the problem of disposal of sodium sulphate is avoided. In a further application of the technique sodium tungstate is converted to tungstic acid which can be further processed by three possible routes to crystalline or amorphous tungstic acid or tungsten powder. In each route sodium hydroxide is produced which on carbonation can be recycled as soda ash to the pressure leach stage. Further testwork is required to determine long term operational conditions in the membrane cell and to confirm the effect and deportment of impurities on products. The process has been patented.

A new national-scale geochemical survey is under way inAustralia with the aim to provide energy and mineral explorers with state-of-the-art precompetitive data and information about the continentÆs potential resources. This low-density geochemical survey will provide a national geochemical data layer using consistent sampling medium and sampling, preparation and analytical methods. Large-scale geochemical patterns thus revealed are expected to point to new areas of exploration potential. The project is funded under the Onshore Energy Security Program. It is hoped that this new national geoscience dataset will help make Australia a more attractive destination for energy and mineral exploration investments. The Angas Zinc Mine (Angas) is a poly-metallic, underground mine in the Adelaide Hills that has been developed through arguably one of the most volatile financial time periods in living memory. From boom times during the commencement of the project, the global financial crisis (GFC) through the stabilisation of the operating period and then a subdued capital market for the period where mine life extension was targeted, the financial environment has always presented a different set of challenges. Indeed even the Underground Operators’ Conferences that have been held across the span of the project allude to these changes: ‘Boom and Beyond’, Launceston (2008); ‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’, Canberra (2011) and ‘Managing the Margin’ in Adelaide (2014).Angas gives a rare opportunity to see the entire life-of-mine of a project and its economic performance within a relatively short time frame. Angas, owned and operated by Terramin Australia Ltd (Terramin), will have undergone resource estimation drill out, feasibility study, permitting, commissioning, operating and completion and rehabilitation all within a period of approximately ten years. A number of sensitivities of the project were tested, particularly in the bankable feasibility study (BFS) stage and the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that impacted the operations profitability the most, whether they were identified preproduction or not. The key sensitivities assessed in the BFS were typical of similar studies, including operating costs, metal recoveries, capital costs, zinc prices, lead prices and exchange rates. The manner in which these sensitivities presented themselves in real life were not as anticipated and modelled in the feasibility study and were also heavily impacted by technical challenges.CITATION:Harris, A, Laughton, K and Ranford, J, 2014. Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer. The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared with a readily available but under utilised method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate.

The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

The long continuing controversy over the Origin of fusain, whether it is a product of primeval forest fires, or of special conditions of weathering (including bacterial decay) of the vegetal debris concerned prior to, burial, has now been extended, to include the possibility that fusain is a product of the coalifaction process subsequent to deposition, so that doubt may reach even to its time of formation.The conflicting views on this point are summarised in the following quotations from two recent publications (my italics in each quotation):1. "Recent observations made in peat and brown coal deposits in Australia, England and Germany strongly suggest that practically all fusain is formed by coalifaction after deposition and 'preliminary compression. In deposits of advanced brown coal rank, it normally takes the shape of pieces of wood compressed parallel to the bedding plane; and some fragments consisting partly of fusain and partly of vitrain exhibit the same amount of compression throughout. This would seem to indicate fusinisation after burial, as hard brittle charcoal would be crushed, or else retain its original irregular shape if strong enough to withstand pressure.In some immature deposits, however, where cover is of a hydrostatic nature rather than a vertical compressionar force, occasional pieces of fusinised wood showing very little flattening are present, but such immature deposits seldom contain the proportion of fusain found in higher rank coals. In view of this, and the possibility of introduction of charcoal into peat deposits, it is felt that a small amount of the fusain in coal may represent wood charred before burial, but most of it almost certaInly originated as a product of fusinisation after burial" (Dulhunty, 1948, p.14).

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

I feel a little like the Parson delivering his Sunday Sermon, chastizing his parishioners for not coming to Church. Those who need to hear me are absent.Nevertheless, I hope that if you agree with what I am about to say you will go forth and spread the word.We often hear of the impact mining has on the community. I prefer tonight to deal with the impact some community attitudes have on mining, and I want to point out that the results of these attitudes rebound to the detriment of our society. I want to deal particularly with regulation, taxation, and proflts.In a civilization whose standard of living is essentially dependent on an adequate and reliable supply of cheap metals and fuels, it should be evident to Blind Freddie that mining must be encouraged.I must express concern at the constraints inflicted on the mining industry by our community. We tend to blame Government for our difficulties, but we must recognize that Government acts merely as agent for the community. It is fair to say that in a free society, if Government actions do not reflect the demands of the electorate, then it doesn't stay the Government. It is important though for Government, in framing its policies, to ensure that it is not unduly influenced by the loud voices of minority groups.The people of our nation have every right to demand that our industry meet certain criteria to be allowed to operate. We all wish to live in a healthy and congenial environment, and to have our individual comforts protected. It is essential, however, that the community realizes that its demands on the mining industry are affecting Australia's prosperity.Each new regulation and each new tax or impost has its effect on investment, employment, and national revenue. Restraints result in an increase in costs which in turn raises the minimum value of a mineral deposit which is economically mineable. It results in minerals, which could be mined under more favourable circumstances, remaining in the ground, perhaps lost for ever.

Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.
