The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

There was a time, in the memory of some here tonight, when the annual meeting of The Institute was a nostalgic occasion. Often, in the 1920s, there was comment on the decline of Australian mining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries. When some of our Presidents prayed then for a new Bendigo, and instead were given a Mount Isa, they were justifiably disappointed because of the vastly different capital requirements.In 1967 the mining picture is very different. The recent mining developments in Australia are certainly as important as several Bendigos and several Kalgoorlies. The mining industry in Australia has never been more dynamic than today (Table 1). And if we ask why it is so dynamic, the answer lies in the role which overseas capital is playing in the industry. The contribution of overseas capital should concern us not only because we are members of the mining and metallurgical profession, but also because we have a duty to make our profession contribute as much as possible to the well-being of Australians. It is not sufficient to argue that overseas capital is good for the mining industry; we must also examine whether it is good for the economy and the nation. In this context the current criticism of the inflow of overseas capital into Australian mining is useful, for it gives us an opportunity to see what has resulted from the inflow.In discussing this question I do not suggest that we emulate Captain Hancock, that legendary Moonta mine manager who, according to Oswald Pryor's cartoon, used to say to his miners: "When I say a thing is, it is, even if it isn't". The question can only be discussed on a factual basis; and I would submit that many of the important facts relating to overseas capital in our mining industry are often overlooked or ignored. I would further submit, on the basis of these facts, that Australia's present day mining industry has been largely built on overseas capital and that the overall benefits of that capital to Australia have been enormous.

George Fisher Mine, near Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, has been producing Pb-Zn-Ag ore since the late 1980s. It consists of two separate underground deposits, George Fisher South and George Fisher North. These two deposits are drilled and modelled separately but are crushed and hoisted as a single stream. The Pb-Zn concentrator in Mount Isa processes ore from George Fisher Mine and Black Star Open Cut, with production also from the Isa Lead Mine until January 2006. This paper outlines the steps involved in setting up a robust reconciliation system for George Fisher Mine, in conjunction with requirements of the Pb-Zn concentrator, Black Star Open Cut Mine and the Mount Isa Lead Mine. Good quality input data and commitment to training have contributed to establishing a robust and effective reconciliation system. Reconciliation data has highlighted several other continuous improvement opportunities.

Agitation leaching data has generally not been analysed to extract the maximum amount of information that is available. Analysis of heap leaching systems has been developing over the last five years to include the underlying rate determining process. This has been found to be diffusion control for all copper leaching; irrespective of whether they are oxide or sulfide minerals. Extension of the diffusion model has enabled better scale-up protocols to be developed. Acid consumption in copper heap leaching operations has been found to be a first-order chemical controlled system. The analysis of the data is relatively straightforward. However the interpretation and scale-up is not as direct as for agitation leaching. The differences in the residence time distributions (RTDs) are required to properly account for the scale-up between test columns and field. The leaching of oxide copper in agitated systems has also been found to be diffusion controlled. However, there are significant differences in the control mechanisms. Initially the leaching control is the supply of acid to the mineral surface. This is limited by the diffusion through the surface boundary layer and is thus subject to the level of agitation. Higher agitation provides thinner boundary layers and faster diffusion rates. Similarly, higher grade material creates a thicker concentration boundary layer and relatively slower leaching. Acid consumption in agitated leach systems is also a first-order system. However, the interpretation of the RTD is easier from batch testing to continuous multiple CSTR series plant operations. Altering the method of acid delivery can significantly reduce acid consumption rates. Predilution of the acid minimises the local acid concentration near the addition point and can reduce the consumption by up to 50 per cent. Modelling of the combined leach rate(s) and acid consumption rates in agitated systems allows comparison of various leaching strategies and selection of the most appropriate. Similarly, the model allows the identification of economic limits to leach recovery; where the cost of acid consumption is greater than the value of the copper recovered. From this analysis selection of residence times for agitation leaching can be determined. The modelling tools are useful in identifying optimum conditions for the leaching process.

THERE are few industrial and metallurgieal processes which do not require the application of heat energy, and the modern demand for increased working efficiency has resulted in attention being paid to temperature control as a means of ensuring fuel economy and more efficient plant operation. In general, mill accuracy required is not very contant in laboratory work, and few industrial operations are controlled to within less than 5° while in many cases greater limits are allowable. Almost every thermal property of matter has been suggested as a basis for the construction of pyrometers, but the thermo-electric type finds by far the widest application, and hence this paper will deal only with the principles, construction, and uses of this type of instrument. THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY.In the year 1821 Seebeek discovered that if the ends of two dissimilar metal wires were joined and one junction heated, a current flowed in the circuit, and the KMF (electro-motion force) set up could be measured by inserting a galvanometer at the cold junction. The phenomenon was not thoroughly investigated for many years, but, as the demand for high-temperature thermometers increased, several investigators, of whom Le Chatelier was one of the pioneers, successfully endeavoured to utilize the principle in pnometric construction. The couples which gave the most satisfactory results were discovered, improvements were made in material and design and the present-day type of instrument gradually evolved. The apparatus consists of three main parts, viz. (1) The thermo-couple itself of two dissimilar metal or alloy wires together at one end. (2) The leads which connect the terminal of the thermo-couple with the measuring instrument.

Mathematically sophisticated methods are now in common use for metal balancing of complex separation flow sheets at many concentrators. These balances usually entail minimisation of the sum of weighted squares of data adjustments subject to flow sheet constraints. The adjusted data provides numerical consistency across the complete flow sheet to facilitate performance calculations. A mine with multiple ore sources can be considered as a flow sheet with the end node comprising the concentrator and its products concentrate(s) and tailings. If the mass transfer and grade estimates for each ore source are sufficiently reliable, a similar metal balancing approach can be used for combined mine and concentrator data. Comparison of balanced and measured assays and mass movements provides useful guidance to security of marginal grade ore and possible dilution problems. This paper includes a summary of results from a case study based on a mine with multiple ore sources.

Gold/silver orebodies of the Golden Plateau deposit, Cracow, Central Queensland, are currently being exploited by the Cracow Mining Venture. A geostatistical block model has been prepared to assist with long term mine planning. The Golden Plateau orebody, of inferred epithermal origin, is a multiply brecciated, silicified fault complex containing irregular, tabular and pipe- like oreshoots. Historically the lode has been stoped and open cut over a strike length of 750 metres at widths of up to 15 metres and to a depth of 250 metres. The Golden Plateau mine produced 1.55 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 12 g/t Au and 13.5 g/t Ag over a 42 year period. In the preparation of the reserve model much reliance has been placed on recent diamond and reverse circulation drilling (71 holes in total). However a significant volume of data has been derived from historical level assays and underground diamond drilling. Over 3,000 level assays and 50 underground drill holes contributed to the database. Similar lognormal populations were observed for 1 metre composite grades from each major drilling campaign once corrections were made for core loss. Cumulative frequency plots revealed only one outlier which was cut to the population line. The population statistics from the historical level assays showed a significant difference from those derived from the drill hole composites. Level assay populations were cut to local drill hole populations before incorporation into the ore reserve model. The resulting data has yielded interpretable variograms, the parameters of which have been applied to the preparation of a kriged block model of the deposit.

The commercial outcomes from new mining projects or brownfields expansions often fall short of feasibility study forecasts because of technical under-performance. This paper: reviews past feasibility study performance; identifies the key drivers of underperformance; and proposes actions that can be taken to manage the risk of underperformance. There have been a number of published reviews of feasibility study performance since the 1970s. The results of these studies are summarised together with recent unpublished data. Key drivers of underperformance include inadequate metallurgical testing, simultaneously pushing a number of project parameters beyond comfortable limits and a failure to recognise the linkage between mining rate and head grade. Actions can be taken during the data acquisition phase and during the feasibility study to manage project technical risks. These generally require a more flexible approach to study management than can be achieved under a ælump sumÆ contract.

The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

Block caving is an important mining method for the future economic exploitation of large, low-grade, steeply dipping orebodies. While block caving is not a new method, there are still many unknowns surrounding the mechanics driving the process, particularly as we are forced into deeper, higher-stressed and stronger ore deposits. The caving industry is desperate to provide some explanation behind the myths of caving geomechanics to better predict and manage current caves and caves of the future. Large amounts of data are collected to help understand caving, but it is not fully utilised and current approaches for analysing the data are capacity limited. The application of virtual reality and scientific visualisation (VRSV) technology to visualise and analyse block caving is a critical future component in the assessment toolbox. VRSV enables large, complex, multidimensional data sets to be analysed and the power of human visual problem solving processes to be utilised. Block caving is a complex system and needs to be analysed as a system, rather than looking at individual factors one at a time. A software module has been developed at UNSW Australia for use in the advanced visualisation interactive environment for analysis of the block cave mining system (BCMS). This fully immersive, 3D virtual assessment tool shows exciting potential and is used to analyse the BCMS with a close linkage to time (ie the chronological occurrence of data). This tool will enable a true investigation into the cause and effect relations within the BCMS. Current research is investigating Newcrest Mining Limited’s Ridgeway Deeps operation and is aiming to turn some of the cause/effect relationships into increased geomechanics understanding to provide improvements to ground control management. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil & Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors.   The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants.   The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising.   The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +        10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +        2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +        a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +        an underground coal preparation plant; and +        a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively.   Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

The Argyle diamond deposits in the East Kimberley were found as a result of a long term exploration programme, begun in 1972 by the Kalumburu Joint Venture (KJV), to search for diamonds on the Kimberley craton. When CRA Exploration Pty. Limited joined the KJV in 1976, it was re-named the Ashton Joint Venture (AJV). The Kimberley craton was considered prospective by analogy with structural settings of diamondiferous kimberlites in Africa. Diamonds were found during regional drainage sampling in Smoke Creek in late 1979, which led directly to the discovery of the rich Argyle lamproite diatreme (AK1) and associated alluvial deposits of Smoke and Limestone Creeks. The diatreme intruded into quartzites, sandstones and shales of Adelaidean age, and consists predominantly of lapilli ash tuff, with minor coarse and fine ash tuffs, 'non-sandy tuff' and olivine lamproite dykes. Erosion of the diatreme has produced the alluvial deposits of Smoke Creek and Limestone Creek to the north and east. Argyle diamonds are of predominately industrial quality, and the typical diamond is a brown, irregularly shaped, frosted, heavily resorbed form with abundant graphite inclusions, well developed etch channels and prominent hexagonal surface depressions. The pre-feasibility evaluation of AK1 comprised diamond drilling, surface and underground sampling, metallurgical sampling, marketing studies and ore reserve estimation. The proven AK1 ore reserve is 61Mtonne at 6.8ct/tonne. Evaluation of the alluvial deposits gave results of Upper Smoke Creek, 580 000 tonne at 4.6ct/tonne and Limestone Creek, 1.7Mtonne at 3.5ct/tonne. Commercial production from the two alluvial deposits began in 1983 with production for the year reaching 6.2 Mct. Mining of the alluvial deposits at three to five Mct/year is proposed to continue until the start of mining of the AK1 deposit in late 1985 or early 1986 at which time a new processing plant and associated infra- structure will have been constructed adjacent to the AKl deposit in the Limestone Creek area. Production is planned at three Mtonne/year, producing 25Mct/year, which will make Western Australia the largest producer of natural diamond (by weight) in the world.

The power station went into operation in 1931, when the installed capacity was 12,500 kVA. with a loading of 4,000 kVA. In 1936 the loading increased to 6,750 kVA. which necessitated the addition of a third set which went into operation in 1937, the installed capacity at that date being 18,750 kvA. with a loading of 7,000 kVA. This remained fairly constant until 1945, when a gradual increase was noticed, the loading in 1952 being 10,598 kVA.With the addition of the copper plant, additional generating capacity was required and it was decided to raise the installed capacity by the addition of a fourth set to 34,375 kVA. with an expected loading, when producing copper, of 20,000 kViA.MAIN POWER PLANTThis consists of three GiE.e. alternators of 6,250 kVA. or 5,000 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating and one G.E.C. alternator of 15,625 kVA. or 12,500 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating, making a total generating capacity of 34,375 kVA.Each alternator is driven by Fraser and Chalmers turbines at 3,000 r.p.m.SYSTEMThe main 3 phase 3 wire 3,300 volt distribution system has the neutral point of alternators earthed through by one or two earthing resistors designed to limit earth fault current to 3,000 amp. for 20 seconds, in the case of the large machine, and to 1,100 amp. for 10 seconds, in the case of the smaller machines, or full load of either size machine at rated voltage.

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

Evidence for Middle-Late Triassic large-scale, silicic volcanism characteristic of extensional continental terranes is widespread in the Tasman Orogenic Zone in Eastern Australia. Detailed study of an area of south-east Queensland has defined the eroded remnants of a large collapse caldera and an associated area of rhyolite dome building and regional downsag which may be a second caldera (Stephens, 1986). The silicic volcanics and minor basaltic to andesitic products have been assigned to the Aranbanga Volcanic Group (Cranfield, in prep.) and the associated granite complex has been named the Mungore Complex (Ellis, 1968). Published isotopic age dates on the Mungore Complex are 212-219 m.y. (K-Ar Biotite; Ellis, 1968) and 226 m.y. (pooled Rb-Sr on several similar plutons in the region; Webb and McDougall, 1967). Basalts within the area have been dated at 219 m.y. (GSQ Annual Rpt., 1986). The collapse caldera (Mungore Caldera) lies on the intersection of 4 major structural features: 1) the Mt. Perry Lineament, a meridional fault zone extending for over 600 kilometres in a NNW-SSE direction and which has faulted the eastern part of the caldera 5 kilometres sinistrally. The lineament has been active at least from mid-Permian to Late Triassic and has localised activity into the Tertiary. Granite plutons of the same age as'the Mungore Complex- are topographically prominent and largely concentrated east of the Mt. Perry Lineament and its extensions (Nash, 1986); 2) the extension of the Darling River Lineament, a continental-scale, ENE trending feature which correlates with regional structural discontinuities but which lacks expression as faults within the Tasman Orogenic Zone;

The purpose of blasting during mining is to produce a muck pile that can be efficiently loaded and transported. There is an increasing awareness of the variation in muck pile characteristics and its economic implications. It is well known that good fragmentation by itself is not sufficient to optimise the muck loading efficiency. The swelling and configuration of the muck pile also significantly affect the productivity of the loading equipment. The characteristics of a muck pile depend upon the blast design parameters, explosive properties and rock mass geology. This study has focused on the dependence of muck pile configuration on blast design parameters, explosive properties and size distribution of the muck.The field work was done in two phases. In the first phase 12 blasts were monitored, while in the second, three blasts were monitored. The blast design parameters and explosive properties for each blast were documented and the following muck pile characteristics were measured:muck pile height and its distance from the facedistance of throwwidth of the power troughsize distribution by image analysis technique.The effects of burden, bench height, heave energy of explosive, row-to-row delay, powder factor and the mean particle size of the fragments on muck pile configuration were examined. It was observed that muck pile height and distance of throw are strongly influenced by the burden, bench height, heave energy of the explosive and the size distribution of the muck. The width of the power trough depends upon the row-to-row delay, powder factor and total burden. Increasingly, owners and operators of underground mines that have a long history are realising the economic and practical advantages of capturing historic mining records and converting hand drafted plans of underground mine workings into an electronic collection of attributed 3D wireframes that can be used for mine planning and exploration purposes. This case study looks at the conversion of historic data to 3D models, with examples from three historic mining operations where this task has been undertaken: West Wits gold projects in South Africa, Northern MiningÆs Radzimowice gold mine in Poland and Avalon ResourcesÆ Viscaria copper mine in Sweden. West Wits Mining Limited holds leases in the West Rand Goldfield of the Witwatersrand Basin, which has significant gold and uranium resources that have been mined since the 1890s. The Radzimowice Gold mine, Poland, hosts Au-Cu-As-Ag mineralisation that has been exploited since the 15th to 16th centuries. The Viscaria Copper mine is located in northern Sweden and was operational during a 15 year mining period to 1997. The process of data collection, management and modelling is inherently challenging for these mines; specifically, collation of historical information, organising this data into logical arrangements that could be validated and sequentially creating 3D models using geo-spatial computer software. Despite the challenges and costs involved in creating a digital 3D model, the conversion has added significant value to each project through identifying areas of potential new resources, aiding planning and presentation to stakeholders. This paper outlines the processes involved in conversion from paper records to a 3D model, the challenges encountered and how these can be overcome, and importantly, the practical and economic advantages of undertaking such a task for explorers, miners and investors.

The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

Treatment processes are outlined for the recovery of rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral-bearing sands on the east coast of Australia. With the exhaustion of the higher grade deposits and the imposition of more rigid specifications for the finished products, strict metallurgical control has become necessary.A description is given of the methods used by The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited to control the operation of suction dredging, of wet concentration using fans and spirals, and of dry separation using high tension and electromagnetic processes. By applying these methods a plant designed for an output of 15,000 tons of rutile per year has been tuned to produce over 20,000 tons of rutile and a corresponding amount of zircon.Details are given of (a) the method of drilling to determine the extent and grade of the ore bodies, (b) a simple electrically-timed pneumatic automatic sampler, and (c) the methods developed for the physical estimation of quartz, rutile, zircon, ilmenite and "others" in the products of plant operation.The method used for calculating the metallurgical balance and the forms used for the reporting of production results are presented.Examples are given which show the value of this detailed production and metallurgical control of plant operation.INTRODUCTIONThe organization which is now known as "The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited" (T.A.M.Co.)-a subsidiary of National Lead Company-commenced operating at Yamba, N.S.W., in 1935. A mixed natural concentrate was at first simply dried and bagged and later was upgraded by the removal of silica and the lighter heavy minerals on shaking tables and, after air-drying, was bagged for export. At that time zircon was the most wanted constituent.
