The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

Underground coal mines in the United States are in the process of completing installations for tracking and communication systems, mandated by Congress after a number of recent coal mine disasters. Yet, evaluation, modelling and testing of such systems has lagged due to legislated changes, abruptly introduced into the coal mining industry. System installation in a wide array of mine types, configurations, layouts and characteristics has provided a wealth of information regarding their potential in underground environments. Data collected from numerous installations for a variety of systems can be used to further define true capability and accuracy of communication and tracking packages. This paper describes a uniform means of evaluating the performance of a communication and tracking system. Several performance measures are proposed and described. These measures can also be predicted using an interactive software program. This program predicts the signal propagation, given the input mine characteristics and layout, with numerical and visual feedback. New or alternative system installations can also be more accurately designed to potentially minimise initial system cost and time required for trial and error installs. The focus of this research is to develop tools and protocols that can evaluate and measure the effectiveness of installed underground communication and tracking systems.

Australians have always been great travellers but, traditionally Australian companies have been very conservative in contrast to more daring individual Australians. During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

Sydney has hundreds of kilometres of sewer tunnels. Many of these are over 50 years old and some have been in service for more than 100 years. The tunnels are predominantly constructed in Hawkesbury Sandstone and many are unlined.Principles have been developed over many years for the safety factor required in designing and constructing new tunnels but these do not necessarily relate to the operation and maintenance of existing tunnels, and in particular those that do not necessarily require personnel access for anything other than regular inspections.Assessment of the stability of these established tunnels needs to take account of their size, their age, their function, and their method of construction, as well as the geology in which they are situated and any support measures which have been installed. More importantly a stability review needs to take account of the consequences of a collapse, with regard to the inspection process, carrying out of any required repairs and the long-term performance of the tunnel.This paper is based upon the authors’ experiences inspecting and reviewing more than 200 km of tunnel in the last ten years. It will show some of the procedures and methods adopted by Sydney Water, how these can be presented as an acceptable procedure in line with other safety standards, and how they might be adopted for other similar historic rock tunnels.CITATION:Gilchrist, D and Lees, D, 2014. An experienced and reliable knowledge of fire fighting procedures is necessary for mine emergency situations. Since experts in this area are scarce the technology of expert systems lends itself as a suitable component in the decision making process. This paper describes an expert system that is being developed for this purpose. The expert system. RESCUE. is a knowledge-based computer programme which incorporates the judgement, experience, rules of thumb. mine environmental conditions as well as human intuitions in the mine rescue operation. RESCUE makes decisions such as whether or not the affected area should be sealed.' whether or not rescuemen should be withdrawn, and which fire fighting agent is most appropriate for the situation. The IF..... THEN rules written in the VP-EXPERT shell contains antecedents and conclusions based on environmental as well as other conditions prevailing in the mine. For example, the CO/Oz deficiency ratio indicates the progress of heating; explosibility trends are given by varying flammable gases C CH4,H2,CO) in relation to oxygen concentration, and barometric pressure falls may affect explosibility by increasing CH4 content in workings. The interaction of such numeric-based rules with others rules reflecting the experience and judgement of the experts assist the system to arrive at its conclusions and subsequent course of action.

Over much of Australia, rainfall is highly seasonal and storm-driven. Consequently, operational mines often need extensive earthworks – drains, dams and levees – for protection during the occasional large floods and for water storage against the dry times; however, it has not been appreciated that many of these earthworks will need to function after mining has finished, sometimes, beyond a normal design life for engineered structures.While a mine is operating, standards for design and maintenance are dictated by regulation and risk assessment. For dams and levees – regulated structures – the standards imposed mainly relate to life-of-mine. The levels of risk and maintenance accepted by the mine operator may not be acceptable to another landholder in perpetuity. However, the Environmental Authority cannot be surrendered unless the landholder has accepted responsibility for any unrehabilitated regulated structures (Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP), 2016).In order for a future landholder to be willing to take responsibility for a dam or levee, the structure should be of value to the business of the property. In addition, its management needs must be consistent with that business; for example, it should be maintainable using skills, equipment and materials normally available to the business.CITATION:Henderson, S J, 2016. The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in lunar exploration and the emergence of countries like China and India as space fairing nations. In 2004, the US announced a new Vision for Space Exploration, whose objectives focused on human missions to the Moon and then Mars. The near future is likely to see the emergence of a worldwide drive to revisit the Moon as the first step in investigating the Solar System. To date, the Apollo missions provide our only experience of human operations on the Moon or anywhere else beyond Low Earth Orbit. Much was learned from these missions. However, their short duration means that many of the environmental effects that will be important for longer-duration missions could not be quantified. In addition, long-duration missions and infrastructure on the Moon require new technologies and capabilities, which must operate successfully and reliably in this lunar environment. Developing these technologies poses significant challenges for the exploration program. The paper discusses the risks associated with the construction of lunar surface and underground structures and the challenges to adopting the standards and rock mass classification systems developed on Earth and their applicability to the Moon. Moreover, an exchange of views to explore near-surface geologic and geotechnical profiles of the Moon is emphasized and implications of the lack of knowledge on rock mass characterisation of the Moonrock mass, the lack of theoretical/empirical experience on the use of rock mass systems outside Earth, and uncertainties.

Banded iron-formation (BIF) and iron ores were measured using the CSIRO developed TIRHyLogger ™ to assess its ability to map quartz, carbonates and riebeckite. The TIR-HyLogger™ measures continuously spectral refl ectance data from diamond drill core or drill chips with a high spatial and spectral resolution. Samples from twelve BIF, bedded iron deposits (BID) and channel iron deposits (CID) have been analysed. The spectral data were processed with two different approaches. The first approach, focused on the identifi cation of the major minerals, was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). It identified four minerals (quartz, ankerite, riebeckite and goethite) and provided pure spectra called end-members. The second approach included a mineral diagnostic spectral feature extraction involving wavelength position, relative peak heights and relative depths of absorptions. Quartz has a diagnostic absorption at 8.625 µm and ankerite shows a refl ectance peak at 11.275 µm. In addition to the identified end-members, two carbonate populations (calcite and siderite) and two silica species (quartz and amorphous silica) were identified.

Stawell Gold Mines (SGM) is an underground mining operation located in Victoria, Australia. The mining method employed is long hole retreat stoping, utilising up and downholes and artificial concrete pillars. Stawell is currently mining the Golden Gift and Magdala orebodies.Access to the Magdala and Golden Gift deposits is via 6.0 m wide by 5.5 m high declines developed at a gradient of one in eight to one in seven from the surface to a depth of 1500 m, with a planned depth of 1650 m. From the declines, cross cutting drives are developed to intersect the orebodies. Orebodies in the Gift system are discrete lodes which are generally mined from a bottom up centre retreat to minimise geotechnical stresses.Ore development fronts are currently located between 1000 m and 1500 m below surface, with all ore being hauled to the surface using a fleet of 60 tonne underground trucks. With the use of conventional pyrotechnic long period (LP) delays, broken rock of combined ore and waste is thrown 10 m from the face and the materials hauled to the surface. The majority of the mullock from development is consumed in the underground as backfill.With the use of Orica Mining Services eDev™ Electronic Blasting System for Tunnelling, the waste is thrown up to 40 m from the face, while majority of the ore is left 5 - 10 m from the face, effectively segregating ore and waste. This enables significant recovery of gold values with minimal loss and significantly reduced dilution. By using this technique in ore drives with a 30:70 waste to ore ratio, SGM is able to haul 24 000 tonnes less mullock to the surface annually. Resue mining is applied to narrow vein headings and gives a 40 per cent grade increase at the faces as well as increasing the economic footprint of development. This will also contribute to an improved grade profile for the year from 3.98 - 4.16 g/t Au and allow extra capacity for ore haulage from stoping and for milling.This paper describes the application and the successful blast outcomes achieved using the eDev™ Electronic Blasting Systems for resue mining at SGM. Results to date, since commencement in March 2010, have been achieving significant benefits in terms of ore grade as confirmed by geologists grab sample grades. Face advance have also shown improvement with better breakage of perimeter holes giving improved face profile. These benefits are delivering increased productivity and safety performance when compared to other resue firing techniques.

The Apeketon Business Hub in Lihir, Papua New Guinea, emerged in 2019 through a partnership between Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) and Lihir Gold Limited (LGL), a subsidiary of Newmont Corporation. This development was driven by a shared vision for the Lihir gold mining operation to further enhance opportunities for the local community and strengthen the economy’s resilience post-mine. At its core, the business hub serves as the epicentre of ABV’s operations in the region. It includes a drop-in resource centre which provides the community with mentoring and consulting services, and access to a range of impactful workshops facilitated by ABV’s local staff and skilled volunteers. These workshops focus on local Lihirians but are open to the entire community, including Newmont employees. We design and continually refine Apeketon Business Hub support programs and offerings driven by community priorities, building trust through long-term relationships, and working side-by-side on real-time challenges. We offer three core programs to different levels of the community, from individuals and families to start-ups, large corporations, and landowner groups. There is significant demand for the support services provided by ABV, with over 350 Lihirians participating in our workshops over the 2023 calendar year. One of the hub’s core offerings is the Family Money Management Program, which addresses crucial challenges faced by Lihir households, particularly in terms of financial resilience. The program takes a comprehensive approach, assisting families in long-term planning and developing skills to effectively manage the income they derive from their employment with LGL and other enterprises. Significantly, the program also addresses financial stress, a factor often associated with domestic violence (Fox et al, 2002). By empowering women and promoting joint financial decision-making, the Family Money Management Program fosters a culture of savings and improved financial management, ultimately enhancing economic resilience within the community.

The presence of clays, in particular clay slime, may complicate many mining operations. Clay slime particles may possess a negative or positive charge depending upon the pH in the process and their presence may lead to reduced recoveries in flotation processes. It is assumed that slime particles may adsorb onto the surfaces of the minerals to be floated and by doing so, reducing the efficacy of the flotation chemicals. In this work it is shown that addition of a small amount of dispersant, either a polyacrylic acid or an anionic polyphenolic polymer, increases the recovery of copper and gold, both in laboratory trials and in plant testing of an ore with high clay content. Measurements of adsorption isotherms reveal that the tested dispersants show preferential adsorption towards the clay minerals present, suggesting that the improved recovery upon dispersant addition occurs by prevention of attachment of clay slime particles onto primarily chalcocite but also chalcopyrite.CITATION:Seaman, D R, Lauten, R A, Kluck, G and Stoitis, N, 2012. Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

During the past decade geopolymer technology has emerged as a possible solution for the effective stabilisation and solidification of waste materials. Amorphous to semi-crystalline geopolymers form by the co-polymerisation of individual alumino and silicate species, which originate from the dissolution of silicon and aluminium containing source materials at a high pH in the presence of soluble alkali metal silicates. It has been shown previously that geopolymerisation can transform a wide range of waste alumino-silicate materials such as fly ash and blast furnace slag into building and mining products with excellent chemical and physical properties, including high compressive strength as well as fire and acid resistance. These chemical and physical properties suggest that geopolymeric matrices derived from waste materials are well suited for environmental and other applications such as the encapsulation of mine tails, the immobilisation of heavy metals and also the fabrication of structural products. The current challenge is to demonstrate that a wide variety of natural Al-Si minerals could serve as potential source materials for the synthesis of geopolymers. Moreover, it should be shown on a large commercial scale that it is possible to encapsulate waste materials into the geopolymeric structure without compromising the chemical and physical properties of the final product for the desired application.

PX4 Software Pty Ltd is a Brisbane-based company, which specialises in providing tenement management software to mining and exploration teams operating in Australia and several international jurisdictions, including the United States, Africa, and Canada. Whilst the company is experiencing substantial growth due to a demand from both the minerals and mining technology sector, there is a crucial gap in the market for critical minerals, which will be required to achieve the net-zero emissions goal set by the Paris Agreement for 2050. To help understand and address the technology gap identified by the unprecedented demand, PX4 Software undertook the Annual Survey of Technological Transformation in the Exploration Industry. This survey involved interviews with 12 very distinguished subject matter experts in the fields of Geoscience and Geology from across the globe. From this survey, we have defined eight major categories of exploration technologies. Notably, the most transformative of these technologies over the past 65 years falls into the Geophysical Methodology category, specifically focusing on image and signal processing of both airborne and downhole data. Advances in computing power during this period have significantly improved data processing quality, enhancing orebody modelling, and targeting. This has had a profound impact on the industry. Moreover, the survey reveals that future transformative technologies are expected to centre on the automation of existing processes through AI and Machine Learning techniques. This is expected to help facilitate the identification of critical mineral systems and thus enable the exploration industry to make more informed decisions based on data analysis using Machine Learning and AI.

International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

AustraliaÆs record-breaking drought, efforts towards environmental best practice and the current commodities boom is demanding water use and reuse as never before. Mining practices, processing, the remote communities and support industries require vast amounts of specific quality water. Sustainability of water use has been a key factor in mine development, expansion of existing operations and increasing profitability of processes involving water. Developments in water treatment technology have enabled the use of a range of processes to produce this water reliably at ever decreasing costs. This increasing acceptance of new technologies has seen seawater desalination, recycling of plant wastewater streams, municipal wastewater reuse and others to become commonplace. Processes including seawater and groundwater reverse osmosis (RO), low pH RO, thermal desalination, high rate clarification, brine water treatment, ion exchange and other advanced treatment technologies are now used as part of mining operations. This paper surveys the trends in water treatment for the mining industry both in Australia and internationally with a review of technologies and case studies of operating plants. The key technologies are explained with an emphasis on the specific requirements for mining operations û unusual raw water, process and operations limitations, environmental concerns, as well as harsh climate. Case study information from several mining operations is included.

Recoverable copper and gold estimates for resource models and ore control routing decisions at Batu Hijau were initially based on flotation testwork from several commercial laboratories. Due to the greater number of copper and gold assay grade available, regression relationships were developed between assay grades and flotation recoveries. Other recovery controlling variables such as oxidation and lithology were included to improve the regression models. With additional drilling, more flotation work was carried out and the regression models were revised to include the new flotation data, also alteration classification and in situ pH. The regression models were replaced in favour of spatially derived models for ore control and short range mine planning. To harness local variability in the block model, blast hole flotation testing is carried out in unison with routine grade assaying. Recovery data are processed (kriged) simultaneously with grade assay data prior to ore polygon delineation. Short range mine planning utilises this model in conjunction with a spatial recovery model derived from drill core flotation data. Long range mine planning utilises the æhybridÆ recovery model whereby the globally robust regression recovery models are overprinted by a spatial (kriged) recovery estimate where flotation data density is adequate (Phase II reserve).

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation.
