Boring of a 7.5Km long tunnel under the city of Stockholm commenced in January, 1987. The 3.5m diameter tunnel will pass under the buildings and as no ground settlement is allowed, the regulation for water leakage into the tunnel is very strict. Probe drilling will be carried out continuously ahead of the boring and when water is encountered the rock has to be grouted before passing with the TBM. The tunnelling system enables probe drilling to be carried out during boring with the TBM. This has earlier been a capacity reducing factor as the whole operation has been stopped during probe drilling. The project is using a new generation TBM especially developed for hard rock formations which require higher thrust per cutter to get a high penetration rate.

Low-grade manganese ore from Sandur, India containing 28.2 per cent manganese and 20.9 per cent iron was roasted with sulphating agents, viz ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid. The effects of temperature of roasting (300 - 800°C), time (15 - 120 minutes) and amount of sulphating agent (0.5 to 2.5 times stoichiometric amount) were studied. Under optimum conditions, it was possible to extract 92 per cent manganese with 0.5 per cent iron at a temperature of 700°C for 90 minutes duration with stoichiometric ammonium sulphate. Further increase in quantity of ammonium sulphate has marginal effect on manganese extraction.Similar studies were carried out with sulphuric acid, and an extraction of about 87 per cent manganese with similar iron contamination was achieved at a temperature of 700°C for 60 minutes duration with stoichiometric quantity of the reagent. Selective extraction of manganese with respect to iron is discussed.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. Na2CO3 is a powerful flux for both dephosphorization and desulphurization in oxidizing atmospheres. In order to study refining with Na2CO3 and the nature of the Na2CO3 slag itself, hot metal (4Kg) was melted in Al203 crucibles in a high frequency induction furnace and oxidised with oxygen under Na2CO3 slag. The behaviour of Na2CO3 at high temperature was observed by thermobalance. It was found that dephosphorization ceases in a few minutes and [,P] after refining is easily lowered to less than 0.010%. [%P] after refining is affected by [Si], [P] of hot metal, the refining temperature and the consumption of Na2CO3. Desulphurization also ceases in a few minutes but it shows curious behaviour, increase of [S], decrease of (S) and increase in sulphur lost, during the latter half of run. Sequential Gaussian conditional simulation of wide-spaced exploration data has been completed in order to optimise a drilling grid at Fortescue’s Eliwana deposit. The aim of this drill grid is to improve the confidence in the Inferred Mineral Resource. A mineralised domain within the Joffre Member of the Brockman Iron Formation was selected to be tested as it makes up a large proportion of the Inferred Mineral Resource and is drilled at a reasonable spacing.One hundred realisations of Fe, SiO2 and Al2O3 grades were completed in the domain. Three realisations were selected for each analyte to represent the range of equiprobable values and a further realisation was selected to represent the truth data set. These realisations were used to flag theoretical drill holes on varying spacings and patterns. The theoretical drill holes were used to estimate into block models using ordinary kriging.These estimates were analysed and the accuracy and precision of each drill spacing was assessed. It was concluded that the greatest improvement in estimation results was noted at either a 100 m × 50 m or 50 m × 50 m spacing.CITATION:Taylor, C and Retz, E, 2015. In considering the organization of research, it is necessary to know just what research is, what objects are in mind when setting out to conduct research, and what are the functional units which are required to enable a coordinated effort in research to proceed.The dictionary defines research in the following terms: Laborious and patient search, as for truth, diligent inquiry or examination in seeking facts or principles; inquiry, scrutiny; to search or examine with continued care; to seek diligently; to search again; to examine anew.This is, of course, simply a formal definition, but the reference to "labour", "patience" and "diligence" should be noted.The following quotation from an answer to the question "What is Research?", published recently in a technical journal, puts some life into the formal definition:- Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind a friendly, welcoming attitude toward change. Going out to look for a change instead of waiting for it to come. Research, for practical men, is an effort to do things better... The research state of mind can apply to anything: personal affairs or any kind of business, big or little. It is the problem-solving mind as contrasted with the let-well-enough-alone mind . . . It is the "to-morrow" mind instead of the "yesterday" mind. Note the statements that: Essentially, it (Research) is nothing but a state of mind, and the research state of mind can apply to anything.

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer Gold Mine consists of an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation located 734 m directly below active open pit operations. Open pit and underground current production rates are 50 million and 5.7 million tonnes per anum (Mt/a) respectively. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 with breakthrough planned to occur on the 5484 bench of the west wall in late 2009. Risk to the south ramp was identified during this time, resulting in the construction of the north ramp. The SLC was continually tracked from initiation with a suite of monitoring systems and managed with a Major Hazard Management Plan (MHMP) and associated Trigger Action and Response Plans (TARP). At breakthrough the eastern limb of the cave was located within a 70 m horizontal distance from the south ramp. The south ramp was closed in October 2009 due to significant slope deformation, extensive cracking in the berms and batters between the ramp and breakthrough bench and a major failure 250 m to the north of the cave breakthrough. Wall response was first identified from slope deformation measurements taken by the wall monitoring radar in May 2009, at which point the SLC was 160 m from breakthrough. The impact of the SLC on the slope is a unique case with the monitoring systems in place able to provide data on the slope reaction to the SLC progression. This paper will discuss the management of the south ramp such as the early interpretation of risk associated with cave breakthrough, monitoring systems implemented to track the cave progression and wall deformation, data integration and interpretation and risk management. Following the closure of the south ramp further instrumentation programs and risk assessments were conducted to determine the risk of re-opening this haulage route. The outcomes of this program will also be presented.

Various methods and software have been trialled for simulation of Au grades at Boddington Mine. This covers in-house and public software as well as sequential and turning bands methods. The diversity of options was further expanded with comparison of point and direct block simulation. Some difficulties were encountered in incorporating high-grade restrictions. Altering parameters or software can make very significant differences and give results varying from estimations. This paper details a new simulation run with validation and tests for local calibration (or progressive correction) of the simulations to the estimations, focusing on reproduction of statistics. This approach brings to the forefront the question æwhat is the purpose of the simulations?Æ Results and some ideas for future applications at Boddington are summarised.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is progressing its Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) project to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates for advanced battery materials. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the process also generates a hematite by-product (~640 ktpa). The hematite byproduct precipitated from the process, hereafter ‘hematite precipitate’, is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. However, it is a fine <20 μm crystalline, hydrometallurgical precipitate and is produced as a filter cake containing a high moisture content of about 15 per cent. This is considerably different from natural hematite ore and is expected to change its performance during sintering. In the present study, laboratory scale sintering tests were undertaken to evaluate the potential impacts of substitution of the hematite precipitate for traditional magnetite concentrates and further for Australian hematite-goethite ores in a simulated industry base blend. Substitution of hematite precipitate for magnetite concentrates was found to slightly increase the sintering temperature required to achieve the strength of laboratory sinters. However, further substitution of hematite precipitate for Australian hematite-goethite ores slightly reduced the sintering temperature required to achieve the laboratory sinter strength. These results reflect the reduction in Al2O3 contents of the blends and are consistent with the trend observed in industry and pilot scale facilities. The reduction in sintering temperature generally correlates to a reduction in fuel rate in the larger scale sintering process. The pore structure of selected laboratory sinters was further examined and discussed in conjunction with sinter strength. The pore structure images highlighted the relative difference between the blends with the most obvious difference being seen at 1290°C which correlates well with the laboratory tumble index (TI). The laboratory sinter samples showed an increase in porosity and irregularity of pore shape, as hematite substitution increased demonstrating the correlation between a more porous structure and a lower TI.

North Flinders Mines Limited (N.F.M.) is an Australian-owned mineral exploration and mining company based in South Australia. In the 1970&apos;s it researched the prospectiveness of the Tanami (central western region of the N.T.) for the identification of possible economic gold deposits. Having outlined the potential for such a deposit at The Granites (550 km. N.W. of Alice Springs), it marked out and in 1975 applied for the grant of eleven gold mining leases (G.M.L.&apos;s) under the provisions of the then Mining Ordinance. This application was deferred by the Commonwealth Government during the time of the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission (Woodward), subsequent enactment of legislation and land claims. In 1980, the Walpiri and Kartangarurra-Kurintji land claim encompassing the G.M.L.&apos;s, became Aboriginal land. It therefore became necessary for N.F.M. to negotiate a mining agreement with the Central Land Council (C.L.C.) represent- ing the Traditional Owners, before the G.M.L.&apos;s could be granted. In August 1983, the C.L.C. and N.F.M. concluded an agreement to enable the grant of mining interests necessary for the devel- opment of The Granites Gold Project. "Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. "'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). The definition and recognition of silver minerals is very difficult. In general such minerals occur at low concentration and can be hard to identify and measure using conventional optical mineralogy. The present paper describes the use of the QEM*SEM system to tackle this problem and provide information of use to the metallurgist. Three aspects of QEM*SEM are used to special advantage in this application. Firstly the automated mode of operation is used to make a rapid search for the sparse phases. Secondly the X-ray capability is used to identify the mineral phases. Finally the image analysis programs quantify the distributions of the minerals which are found. The paper deals with the identification stage of the process and with the use of the data which can be derived. Silver minerals which covered a range of ore types and composition were collected and studied in detail. On the basis of these measurements and information received from a number of mining companies regarding the important minerals, a classification table was prepared. This table listed about 40 different silver mineral types which could be identified by QEM*SEM and which were of interest in silver recovery processes. Where the silver occurs in solid solution in concentrations greater than about one per cent, the silver content in the species was subdivided into ranges based on statistical intervals. The QEM*SEM system was programmed to recognise these as separate species. Examples are presented of the use of the system in defining the type and morphology of the silver mineralisation to assist in the assessment of batch flotation test Samples.

Australia had an active uranium mining industry in the 1950s with uranium oxide being supplied under contract to the atomic energy authorities of the U.K. and U.S.A. In the 1960s, when these con- tracts concluded, domestic production ceased, apart from Rum Jungle, whose production until 1971 was stockpiled. By the 1970s, the demand for uranium from the electrical utility industry had risen sharply and the effects on Australia were notable. The Mary Kath- leen mine re-opened in 1976 but, more significantly, exploration activity suddenly expanded with the re- sult that several world-standard deposits were locat- ed. Western world requirements for uranium based on increasing energy consumption and a changing energy mix, will warrant the development of Aust- ralia&apos;s resources. By 1985 our mines could be pro- ducing 9,500 tonnes of uranium oxide yearly and by 1995 the export value from uranium could reach that from wool. In terms of benefit to the community the economic rewards are considerable but, in terms of providing energy to the world, Australia&apos;s uranium is vital.

ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

"Ventilation risks in an underground mine have essentially remained the same for centuries, yet theevidence suggests that there are many coal mines that have failed to adequately control these risks.The conduit for the knowledge learned by previous generations exists in the mining legislation. In an ideal world, mines would not need legislation to tell them what to do; they would resolve the risks to an acceptable level so as to protect the safety of persons in the mines based on the acquired knowledge. There will be some who have been personally aff ected by a mining disaster but for the majority they will be remembered as a vague recollection of an event from long ago. The mining legislation is the repository for the knowledge and outcomes from inquiries of past disasters. The challenge for the current generation, and the generations to come is to appreciate the legislation that exists, so as to not ælearn the hard wayÆ. In reviewing most disasters there is comment or discussion on the adequacy of the legislation, which ultimately results in some amendment to the law. For each person, there is an increasing responsibility to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated. Understanding the legislation, its history and its purpose is the fi rst step in ensuring thatventilation risks are eff ectively managed. Failing to do this will be disastrous.
