In response to the ever-increasing challenges facing the modern gold mining industry and the need for improved gold recoveries within all processing streams, CSIRO has upgraded its latest automated mineralogical analysis system, QemSCAN (formerly QEM*SEM), with special purpose hardware that speeds up the location and measurement of precious metal-bearing phases. By rapidly scanning the surface of polished blocks, and accepting only fields that contain the minerals of interest, QemSCAN is able to find, map, and quantify target minerals in extreme detail. Phase identification and quantification is achieved by placing a grid of points over the target particle and collecting X-ray information at each analysis point. The resulting mineral maps provide the metallurgist with a complete textural description of all gold-bearing phases within the product measured, together with quantification of the gold phases in terms of their modal abundance, particle size, mineral associations, relative contributions to gold deportment and liberation characteristics. Examples are presented which illustrate how QemSCAN is able to find and quantify gold-bearing phases within low-grade ores from the Super Pit, Kalgoorlie. This work is the result of a collaborative project between Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), CSIRO Minerals, and the University of Queensland, and is on-going.

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

Shear-flocculation is one of a munber of potential processes for upgrading deposits of finely-grained minerals and, more generally, for separating different types of particles suspended in a fluid.The smaller the particle the more likely it is to follow the fluid streamlines, or be entrained within turbulent eddies, and the less likely it is to deviate from the streamline and attach to bubbles (froth flotation), other particles (selective flocculation) or magnetic poles (wet magnetic separation). As shown in Figure I, a number of ingenious ideas have been proposed to overcome this effect. The suspended particles are assumed to be 1 - 10 µm.Thus, the efficiency of attaching ultrafme particles of the valuable component (solid circles) to air bubbles, as in process A, is poor. The efficiency may be improved by attaching the particles to oil droplets (Ralston, Kart and Newcombe, 1984) to form agglomerates that rise or sink (B), to magnetic particles (C) (Parsonage, 1988) to allow recovery in a magnetic separator (D), to other particles to form aggregates (E) that are then either attached to bubbles (F) or recovered by sedimentation (G) (Warren, 1992), and to pieces of polyethylene (Rubio and Baltar, 1991) that rise or sink (H).In A, C, E, F and H, the forces that are generally used to ensure collisions result in adhesion are hydrophobic forces, hydrodynamic forces and inertial forces (Warren, 1992). These drag particles from the streamlines to allow particle-particle adhesion. In B and E, soluble polymeric molecules have been added to bridge between particles as they approach closely during a collision.The second major consideration is selectivity. Selective adsorption of the hydrophobe or polymer onto the valuable particles is the key. Many subtle effects of surface chemistry are involved in obtaining adequate selectivity. A complication in real systems is that the initial suspension is often naturally coagulated and needs to be dispersed before being selectively flocculated.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall. It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and to avoid adverse effects from vibration and gases generated by the detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical designs and test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis, it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast. This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.

A new crude ilmenite beneficiation process was recently proposed that allowed for the preparation of a smelter grade ilmenite from ilmenite with elevated chromium content. Magnetising roasting was not utilised in the process. As part of this circuit an ilmenite low susceptible reject stream was produced that had a low magnetic susceptibility. In this article a magnetising roasting process was investigated to beneficiate this material. Tests were conducted on material produced by pilot scale simulations on a typical South African East Coast heavy mineral reserve. The results obtained were compared to those published in literature for crude ilmenite. The small-scale experiments were used to define approximate operational limits for the oxidising roasting of a low susceptible ilmenite low susceptible reject stream, although industrial roasting conditions may differ significantly from those obtained in laboratory units. In a next phase these results will be confirmed on pilot plant scale.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of an ongoing three-year government- and industry-funded research program. In order to assess the feasibility of various bio-remediation strategies, field-scale manipulations were conducted using enclosed mesocosms (limnocorrals). Two manipulation strategies were tested: addition of algal nutrients (phosphate and nitrate) to Main Zone Pit surface waters; and addition of algal nutrients (surface waters) and dissolved organic carbon (deep waters) to the Waterline Pit. Nutrient addition was conducted in order to stimulate algal production and enhance metal scavenging by biogenic particles, while dissolved organic carbon (ethanol) was added to increase oxygen demand and foster the development of sulfate reduction in pit bottom waters. Fertilisation resulted in rapid growth of natural phytoplankton populations in the surface waters of both pits. In the Main Zone Pit, the stimulation of algal growth resulted in the pronounced removal of both dissolved and total metals (Zn and Cu) from surface waters, with higher rates of metal removal being observed at higher nutrient additions. Metal removal could be attributed to the scavenging of dissolved metals by biogenic particles and subsequent particle settling. A similar pattern of removal from surface waters was observed in Waterline Pit (Zn and Cd). The addition of ethanol to deep waters in Waterline Pit was effective in promoting sulfate reduction in the lower layer. The development of reducing conditions resulted in near-quantitative removal of dissolved Zn and Cd, presumably as secondary metal sulfides. Iron, As and Ni profiles in Waterline Pit exhibited no evidence of removal from either surface waters or bottom waters. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the passive forms of bioremediation tested in these pit lakes may be effective for whole pit-lake remediation.

The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

A method Is presen- ted for determining any arbitrary co- lumn of the sensitivity matrix. A network interpretation of this met- hod was developed in which an ancilla- ry network additional the basic network is constructed and solved, giving an analysis of the sensitivity signs de- pending on the structure of the network.

Large deposits present computational challenges to todayÆs commercial orebody modelling systems that are based on conventional block models. We describe a system that is specifically engineered to model and visualise large deposits. Central to the system is linear octree encoding of conventional block models and real-time conversion of three-dimensional (3D) meshes to linear octrees. We provide both methodological treatment and practical experience in implementing such a system. A commercial implementation is also presented to demonstrate the validity of the approach.

In the future, Illawarra Coal, the primary metallurgical coal producer in the southern coal fields of New South Wales, will face many unique challenges not found in other coal or minerals production areas. To manage these challenges and determine the best strategy for the business, Illawarra Coal has adopted a systematic strategic planning process, which starts from the broadest possible options analysis and culminates in a ægo-forwardÆ operating case that individual mine sites use as the basis for short-term planning. This paper will discuss two major topics. Firstly an overview of the Illawarra Coal and BHP Billiton strategic planning processes. This will demonstrate the range of variables and inputs that are required for the planning process, and the system which is followed to evaluate different alternatives for the extraction of the resource. Secondly, having discussed the primary external and internal factors that must be accounted for in the planning process, and the main issues affecting the viability and likelihood of each alternative, the paper will discuss the particular challenges that Illawarra Coal will face in the coming decades. These challenges include: market and price uncertainty; managing impact on surface features, infrastructure and environment; community interaction; transport and logistics constraints; unknown mining environments; lack of geological knowledge; limited surface access for new mining domains; changing attitudes to longwall mining in the Illawarra; ageing workforce; and cost and overhead management. The paper intends to discuss how these issues impact the business currently and how they are incorporated into Life of Asset plans and overall corporate strategy for Illawarra Coal.

Many operating hard-rock sulfide mines are predicted to require perpetual post-closure management to prevent environmental degradation. Causes include evaporative concentration of metals and other solutes in pit lakes, and acid rock drainage from sulfide waste-rock, tailings, and pit benches. Dilemmas posed by the prospect of perpetual management include: uncertainty in predictive models typically prevents reliable bounding on forecasts for the timing or magnitude of environmental impacts; comprehensive closure designs that can meet environmental standards may not be economically possible, particularly when applied retroactively to mines permitted under less stringent closure requirements; the publication of site-specific environmental analyses in peer-reviewed journals are discouraged in the current regulatory environment, hindering scientific advancement; and the durability of financial and government institutions cannot be assured for the long-time horizons over which mine impacts are predicted to occur. Re-evaluating mine closure in a framework of sustainable development (as proposed by the Mining Mineral Sustainable Development forum), can resolve, in part, these dilemmas. Key sustainability goals include: assurance of the social and economic well-being of the local community; assurance of the long-term environmental integrity of the region; and establishment of institutions capable of addressing (and learning from) long-term environmental management. Under a sustainability framework, impractical plans for immediate attainment of perpetually-stable closure may be replaced with a fund for long-term management of environmental impacts (eg through contaminant migration controls and exposure barriers), and a set-aside long-term growth reserve intended to eventually fund more complete closure. Fund expenditures would follow Adaptive Managementùa template for environmental-management institutions in which knowledge accumulated and uncertainty acknowledged explicitly. Under adaptive management, trusts would be flexible entities, supporting an evolving program of monitoring, predictive model refinement, and treatment. Periodic value of information analyses would target data collection efforts, refining the balance between predictable cost and uncertainty. This framework could overcome present-day financial shortcomings, enhance the field of environmental science, and meet the needs of future generations through the propagation of capita.

This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.

The lignite deposits of Southland and Central Otago are a potentially significant energy resource for New Zealand. Current estimates put the technically mineable lignite reserves at 5.3 billion tonnes, which is more than ten times the energy content of the Maui gas field. Thus, the strategic importance of the lignite as a basis for maintaining current levels of self-sufficiency in transport fuels, or as a possible feedstock for electricity generation, deserves full investigation. The full extent of the lignite deposits was only recently established as the result of a scout drilling programme undertaken between 1976 and 1979 by the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy, and from companion studies conducted by the New Zealand Geological Survey. These discoveries of large quantities of lignite coupled, at the time, with rising oil prices, raised the prospect of their development for production of transport fuels.

Somewhat to the surprise of many heavy mineral sands (TiO2 and zircon) producers, there are important geological structures within their typical placers and aeolian sands deposits that affect plant metallurgical performance. After many years of operations, even experienced producers have encountered unexpected changes in production, product quality and recovery. After looking in all the obvious (but wrong) places, it is recognised that the mine has advanced into ore with different separation characteristics. Metallurgical process response can vary significantly between ore sourced from different geological domains. The mineral characteristics that are exploited for effective separation may be associated with differences in the depositional environment, or be post-depositional in origin. Surface coatings that interfere with electrostatic separation might be associated with paleo-water table movements. Major storm events in the deposition history can also leave distorted mineral assemblage through stranded formations or incisions in older deposits.Apart from the influence on capital and operating costs, geometallurgical variances add another dimension to orebody modelling. Each domain could have specific recovery, mineral assemblage and product quality values to be considered in the value model. Project success is often directly dependent on understanding the geometallurgy of the resource. Tailoring the exploration and early process flow sheet development programs to account for such variances should be standard practice. Such practices have had a chequered history in the mineral sands industry, with sophisticated processes having been developed, only to be shelved for ‘economic’ reasons, and then once again ‘discovered’ when problems re-emerge.It is clear that knowledge gained through a higher level understanding of the changing mineral separation characteristics and advance warning of mineral behavioural differences can mean the difference between lost recoveries and disappointed customers or well timed capital plans and maximised revenues.

It is often said in business that if you donÆt have a customer you donÆt have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you donÆt have customers you really donÆt have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: What products will this project produce? Who are the potential customers? What are the customersÆ requirements with respect to grade and impurities? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customerÆs process circuits? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities. Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.
