"The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The result is an optimised solution for the deposit based on practical and achievable mining constraints rather than one based on generalised modifying factors.To evaluate the economic impact of the methods above, results have been costed and scheduled and a comparison of operating cash flows made.Citation:Swapp, S and Mann, C, 2016. This study analysed the fracture characteristics and movement process of goaf roofs under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, based on the engineering conditions of Tangshan Mine F5001 gangue backfilled working face. The inclined borehole detection method is adopted to conduct long-term and fixed-point detection of the roof stability. The distribution characteristics of mining-induced cracks in the roof are described quantitatively based on the crack density, and a similar model test method is used to assist the analysis of the roof movement under the control of gangue backfilled mining using stress sensors and digital speckle deformation field monitoring. The results show that under the condition of gangue backfilled mining, structural cracks in the roof typically appear at the boundary of rock strata. The appearance of cracks is related to the rock strata where they are located. Structural cracks appear in the form of single cracks ahead of the working face and develop into structural cracks in the goaf. The roof movement of the coal seam develops in five stages: fracture incubation, crack extension in advance, dense fracture development, steady fracture expansion, and roof stability. Separation forms the primary component of the roof subsidence, accounting for more than half of the subsidence value. The separation generally extends over a long distance along the strike, and vertical crack-intensive areas appear in the roof above the cut-off and stop line. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis to support designs of backfilled mining and upgrading of hydraulic supports in working faces.

One of the key objectives in production from any mine is the minimisation of ore loss and dilution. This can only be achieved when the distribution of ore within the mine is known. The distribution of ore is usually evaluated from a combination of drill hole information and underground mapping data. Three-dimensional models of the ore distribution are then constructed by interpolating grades, contact locations and confirming these estimates through mapping. While the interpolation procedure can incorporate an understanding of the local geological conditions, it is an approximation and thus susceptible to some degree of ore loss or dilution. Naturally, such problems increase in areas of sparse geologic information or greater geologic complexity. Borehole radar offers an approach to decrease the interpolative aspects of modelling by providing a continuous image of some ore contacts. Borehole radar works by building a two-dimensional image of an ore contact from radio waves bounced off the contact from closely spaced positions along a borehole. This image can be imported into Datamine (or a similar design package) and incorporated into geological models of a given ore block. The results of a trial survey from the Mariners nickel mine at Kambalda are presented to illustrate the improved level of detail and accuracy that can be achieved through the incorporation of borehole radar into orebody delineation practice. Once implemented on a large-scale this technique has the potential to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness of long hole stoping at Kambalda, through increased ore recovery and reduced dilution.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is expected to become one of the main technological instruments for mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions into the earthÆs atmosphere. Besides the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the implementation of CCS would have various negative consequences, which are û if at all û only poorly covered in the current socio-political discussion. Taking into account all aspects of CCS, the outcome of a comprehensive and conclusive assessment of CCS against the background of the sustainable development concept is uncertain. When assessing the overall impact of CCS in a holistic approach, a variety of aspects with effects on sustainable development are affected. Besides economic issues, various other effects of implementing CCS should be taken into consideration. These include for example additional costs for CCS facilities and processes and a decrease in powerplant efficiency due to high energy requirements of capture processes, and various ecological and societal aspects, such as higher demand for combustible, resulting in faster depletion of reserves and higher land and water use and the provision of jobs along CCS technology chain. This paper presents an approach for a structured sustainability assessment of CCS based on the multi attribute decision-making (MADM) method analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The functioning of the presented methodology is exemplified at the case study of a German coal fired powerplant.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. Robe River Iron Associates (RRIA or Robe) is widely regarded as the worldÆs most cost-effective, consistent and reliable supplier of iron ore. It has been in operation since 1972 and globally is the fourth largest seaborne trader in iron ore exporting 25.5 million tonnes of -9.5 mm sinter fines and 4.5 million tonnes of pisolite lump (-31.5 +6.3 mm) during 1999. Robe is a joint venture that controls major iron ore resources in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. ItÆs participants are North Limited with an interest of 53 per cent (65 per cent including minority interests) and Japanese companies Mitsui (33 per cent), Nippon Steel Australia (10.5 per cent) and Sumitomo Metal Australia (3.5 per cent). Robe River Mining Co Pty Ltd manages the project which is a subsidiary of North Limited and Mitsui.

Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. The Cliffs Nickel Mine extracts a narrow near vertical nickel vein using a mining method of underhand bench stoping with paste backfill. In 2014, at a depth of 400 m below surface, the Northern block of the mine began to experience squeezing within ore development. At first the deformation was localised, within 30 m of the stoping front, but later became pervasive extending across the Northern block and resulting in a hiatus in mine production. The global mechanism is a progressive pillar failure, where the inter-level pillars in advance of the production front could no longer withstand the induced load and progressively yielded. The local mechanism of failure was observed as crushing of the massive sulphide ore and ‘punching’ of the pillars into the ultramafic hangingwall exhibited as floor and sidewall dilation and unravelling of the mafic footwall. The cause of the global mechanism was attributed to a combination of factors, including: high overall extraction ratio, small vertical pillar heights between ore development, high stress in relation to the low rock mass strength, shallow stope front angle, and insufficient ground support capacity. Following the progressive failure, the remnant rock mass conditions across the northern block were severely degraded, with numerous falls of ground that led to a reassessment of the mine plan. Recovery of the Northern block started in 2016 as a staged process. Development of the safe recovery work methodology involved a number of considerations, such as: production sequencing, development access design, ground support, and development of specific procedural controls. The Northern block was then broken into smaller mining precincts based on tactical factors such as location, ease of access, scale of rock mass damage and nickel content. A specific ground support standard and work methodology are employed, while cycle sheets are used to ensure quality and completeness of work. Large intersections showing signs of deformation have either been bypassed or treated using Rocprops to maintain stability during stope production. This approach has been successful in safely regaining access and restarting production in areas that had previously been removed from the mining reserve.

The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new; in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine, which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancillary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. Maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancillary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

The Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the northern Cape Province of South Africa hosts high grade (>60 per cent Fe) hematitic and specularitic iron and manganese mineralisation. The mineralisation is primarily exposed along the western margin or in the central part of a major interference fold structure known as the Maremane dome. The bulk of South AfricaÆs iron ore production is currently provided by two active mines, Kumba Resources megaton Sishen iron ore mine on the northern end of the dome, and the smaller Assmang Beeshoek mine on the southern closure. The undeveloped Sishen South deposit, which contains ~400 Mt of high-grade hematite ore, is located approximately 9 km towards the southwest of Postmasburg. It forms a linear extension of the Beeshoek mine and as such contains comparable laminated, breccia and conglomeratic iron mineralisation. The Transvaal Supergroup sediments were deposited in two distinct fault-controlled basins on the Archean Kaapvaal craton. Basement rocks in the western Griqualand West basin are formed by a carbonate platform sequence (Campbellrand Subgroup), which is overlain by a thick sequence of banded iron formation of the Asbesheuwels Subgroup. A major unconformity separates these rocks from the red-bed Gamagara Formation, which is correlated with the base of the Olifantshoek Supergroup. Diamictites and lavas of the Postmasburg Group have been thrust over these units from the west. The mineralisation process is related to regional scale supergene iron enrichment of Kuruman banded iron formations along the unconformity. During regional tectonism associated with the Kheis orogeny (2400 - 1700 Ma) the Maremane dome was uplifted, and the basal dolomite units thus exposed to erosion and karstification. The overlying banded iron formations collapsed into karst sinkhole structures where leaching of silica and enrichment of hematite occurred. Although the exact mechanism of the mineralising process remains unclear, karstification preserved components of the original concordant laminated and massive ores. These ores were subsequently eroded and deposited as conglomeratic and gritty ores down-dip of the Maremane dome in alluvial fan systems. A thin veneer of recent calcrete or Tertiary Kalahari clay beds masks the subsurface geology and most of the orebodies, thus ground geophysical gravity surveys proved excellent exploration tools to penetrate the surficial cover. These surveys were used extensively for delineation drilling and to deduce the subsurface geology and structural development of the area. Finally Sishen South orebodies were modelled with ModelVision software in an attempt to obtain an exploration template for the surrounding area.

Kinetics of bubble-particle interaction, surface hydrophobicity and interfacial phenomena in sulfide mineral flotation are discussed in this paper. Results of the measurements of a bubble and mineral induction time (IT) and detachment force (DF), vacuum of bubble evolution (VE) and mineral floatability are discussed for pyrite, galena, chalcocite and chalcopyrite. Natural wetting and wetting induced by xanthates with different lengths of alkyl chains are examined. Experiments show the existence of several maxima of hydrophobicity on dependences of pH and electrochemical potential. These maxima are attributed as the reflection of mineral surface heterogeneity due to xanthate adsorption and the presence of cationic and anionic centres with uncompensated positive and negative charges. These charges can be neutralised by both regulation pH and applied potential. The aim of this paper is to evaluate a thickness of the rupturing film and to estimate how long the bubble-mineral interactions are according to the experimental values of IT, in order to develop a procedure for comparing of the results of DF and atomic force measurements in the same dimensionality, and to compare the results of the experimental studies on the wettability of sulfides with those predicted by the models of physics of capillarity.

Electrochemical investigations of the flotation of sulphide minerals are re- viewed. Flotation with thiol collectors is interpreted in terms of a "mixed poten- tial" model in which the process leading to hydrophobicity is the anodic oxidation of the collector at the mineral surface and this is driven by the cathodic reduc- tion of oxygen. Electrochemical studies have identified the products of anodic oxidation as chemisorbed collector, metal collector compounds, and dithiolates; the products formed in each situation depend on the collector used, the mineral under study, and the pretreatment of the mineral surface. Investigations on galena, pyrite, and chalcocite are discussed. Electrochemical and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been used to determine the products of surface oxi- dation of sulphide minerals in order to elucidate the mechanism of collectorless flotation. The mixed potential mechanism allows consideration to be made of the ways in which flotation of sulphides with thiols can be inhibited. Examples of depressant action are presented. The relevance of electrochemical investi- gations to practical flotation is Discussed.

At the Kristineberg mine in northern Sweden sulfide-rich, poorly buffered tailings have been deposited in five impoundments located along a valley. The tailings area has been remediated by applying a combination of till cover and flooding. A new method that has been applied to parts of the tailings area is to raise the groundwater table to saturate the tailings. By increasing pH by liming, thereby reducing metal mobility, a water-covered downstream impoundment is functioning as a trap for metals released from the till-covered impoundments upstream. In this paper the efficiency of the system approach used at Kristineberg is evaluated. Progressive changes of water quality from groundwater in the upstream till-covered impoundments via surface streams within the pond system to the water in the flooded downstream pond and its outlet are described. The results show that the system approach used in the design of the remediation programme of the tailings works as planned. The sulfide oxidation rate has decreased in the till-covered impoundments, and, as predicted, there is an out-flush of old weathering products which will continue for at least five years before equilibrium is reached. The groundwater in the till-covered impoundments has high concentrations of Fe, S, Mg and Zn, but the concentrations of metals such as Cu, Cd and Pb are much lower than before the till cover was applied. The limed pond is an efficient metal trap, with concentrations as high as 2.76 per cent Zn and 0.28 per cent Cu in the calcite-gypsum sludge developed on the tailings. The outlet from the flooded pond, and thus from the whole mining area, releases small amounts of metals to the recipient in comparison to the amounts that are in movement within the mining area. During the period May to November, 13 kg dissolved Zn and 111 kg particulate Zn was released to the recipient, whereas a total of 27 000 kg was transported by surface water within the impoundment system during the same period. The results from Kristineberg show that when planning remediation of complex mining areas, it is useful to adopt a system approach in which different methods are used on different parts of the area along the flow path of the drainage water, whereas flooding of the downstream pond is the key to the performance of the entire system.

The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

Sampling protocols and metallurgical flow sheets should be designed to suit the style of mineralisation in question. In support, the a priori need for evaluation programs is the characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical processes employed. Within the coarse- to-fi ne gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated particles, through to difficult for coarse gold mineralisation. Conversely, metallurgical processing may be relatively simple for coarse gold ore and more difficult for very fi ne gold ores. Most deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The nature of mineralisation, mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by preliminary sampling to facilitate testing. Mineralogical studies, focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required as part of wider paragenetic and geometallurgical investigations. This paper discusses key issues and presents a methodology for the determination of gold particle size in coarse gravity-gold ores to support sampling optimisation and which also contributes to metallurgical characterisation.
