The purpose, basic data requirements and various analysis/modelling tools employed for geomechanical evaluation of mine-site conditions are overviewed. The impact and application of computer technology are dis- cussed. Broad guidelines and criteria are presented for establishment of a practical geomechanics data-base system to yield infor- mation suitable for mine design purposes. Future needs of the Australian mining in- dustry are examined.

The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. Mount Isa Copper Mines is a world-class mining operation producing approximately six million tonnes of ore per annum. With over 50 years of mining history and over 76 million tonnes of underground resource remaining there are many challenges facing the mine technical team today and into the future. The mine consists of nine distinct areas: the Hangingwall Lens, Footwall Lens, 1100, 1900, N1100, N1900, 3000, 3500 and N3500 orebodies. Each of these areas have different characteristics, requiring varying methods of mine design and ground control for safe and efficient orebody extraction. Each of the areas operate with an independent sequence whilst interacting with the entire underground operation. Within the first five years after graduating mining engineers tend to orient their careers in either a technical or operations direction. Engineers working towards a specialised technical career will often be working as mine planning engineers, whilst others more focused in the operations stream occupy roles such as operations or project engineers. At this stage of a mining engineerÆs career they are not yet categorised into one stream or another, but career decisions made now can generally focus their ultimate career path in one direction or the other. Due to the size of the Mount Isa operations there are many opportunities for engineers pursuing both career path and plenty of room for growth forthose as yet unsure.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. The Karangahake epithermal Au-Ag mine consists of two main lodes, the Maria and the Welcome/Crown hosted in Miocene andesites. Mineralisation is strongly constrained to major structures and is genetically linked to dynamic tectonic processes. Two main periods of faulting are represented in the deposit: 1. NE striking right-lateral/normal oblique linked spatially and temporally with the mineralising system, and 2. ESE striking right-lateral/normal oblique post-mineral faulting that displaces the lodes. Paleostress analyses performed on a limited kinematic data set indicate NW-SE extension during the formation of the vein system. Veins and lodes strike NNNE and accordingly contain a strike-slip component. The kinematics of vein formation at Karangahake is broadly consistent with that of other deposits within a NNE-trending belt of deposits. Oblique shear on deflecting structures will create zones of compression and dilation. Dilatant zones created on steep structures create fluid pathways potentially focussing large volumes of fluid from deep parts of the system into dynamic structures.

Gold mineralisation at the Kerimenge-Lemenge prospects is a classical example of myltiple, overprinting events, associated with intrusive-related hydrothermal systems. Repeated emplacement of high level dacitic porphyry bodies (Edie Porphyry; 2.4 - 3.8 Ma) was accompanied by a phreatomagmatic eruption which formed a diatreme-maar complex. Later hydrothermal fluids utilised permeable fault zones and diatreme contacts. Mineralisation took place during two main events. Stage I consists of early quartz - illite/sericite - carbonate phase with associated pyrite-arsenopyrite mineralisation. This phase is zoned from quartz - sericite-pyrite/arsenopyrite in the south at depth, to dominantly manganocarbonate - illitic clay - arsenopyrite- pyrite_s significant base metals in the north and at shallow levels. The majority of known gold (18.1 Mt @ 2.0 g/t Au) at Kerimenge is associated with Stage I activity. The gold occurs primary within the lattice of the sulphides and is metallurgically refractory. Fluid inclusion studies indicate early boiling and progressive cooling and dilution of hydrothermal fluids during the evolution of the Stage I event. Near paleosurface condensation of gases, which evolved off the boiling system at depth, produced abundant low pH bicarbonate fluids. During the waning phases of Stage I activity, these bicarbonate condensate fluids descended down permeable structures and formed banded manganocarbonate veins. High grade non-refractory gold mineralisation during Stage II event is restricted to favourable structures at relatively shallow levels and in the northern regions of the prospect area. Gold in this event exhibits a distinctive Au - Ag - Te -Cu geochemical signature, and is associated with hessite - tennantite - chalcopyrite mineralisation within quartz veining. Alteration and fluid inclusion studies indicate that this style of mineralisation is a result of the quenching of pulses of hot, late magmatic mineralised fluids by the cold condensate waters.

IN the present paper it is the writer's intention to largely confine the subject-matter to details relating to the metallurgical practice in connection W,ith the blast roasting of lead ores at the Port PiJ;ie works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. rather than to elaborate on mechanical plant details which are more or less standard equipment of the average Dwight and Lloyd or Huntington-Heberlein blast roasting installations (hereinafter referred to in the text as D. & L. and I.I. & H. respectively). The present blast roasting plant is a combination ot D. & L. straight line machines and IQ-ton H. & H. pots. The latter installation was an operating unit prior to the introduction of the D. & L. machines, the pre-roasting then being accomplished in Ropp roasting furnaces.On the introduction of the D. & L. machines the use of the Ropp roasting furnaces as a pre-roasting unit was discontinued, and this step of the process was then carried out on one section of the D. & L. installation.Consequently, then, the present plant consists of (1) A section of D. & L. machines, which operate solely as a pre-roastiIig unit. (2) A section of D. & L. machines which operate to their full capacity as 3, final roasting unit and treat the main portion of the pre-roasted material.

The report by Baker (1958, p. 27) of krennerite in contact with gold in a specimen from the 2500 ft level, Phantom South lode, Great Boulder mine, Kalgoorlie, led the writer to look into this further, since Cabri (1965) reported that the assemblage krennerite-gold was unstable between 238° and 356° C, and possibly down to room temperature.Dr. G. Baker very generously provided the writer with two chips from the same rock specimen (No. 14 as labelled from the mine) in which the krennerite gold assemblage was reported to occur. These were examined by polished section and x-ray diffraction techniques and returned to the classified collection of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of CSIRO.One specimen, showing visible gold, was examined optically with a binocular microscope and telluride material was twice removed from contact with the gold for x-ray diffraction. This material proved to be petzite and so amends a statement by Baker (1958, p. 39) that no petzite was found in the Phantom lodes.The second chip was polished, and microscopic...

The South Island of New Zealand comprises a collage of distinct tectonostratigraphic terranes. Some tectonic models predict that these terranes formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland. However, geologic evidence suggests that some of these terranes may be exotic. Over 400 samples from 30 sites were collected from the Brookstreet terrane within the Takitimu Mountains. The section includes the early Permian Takitimu Group and the late Permian White Hill Intrusive Suite. Over 80% of the rocks show a partial or complete regnetization in the present field due to recent acquistion of VRM. Although some remagnetization of the Takitimu Group occurred during the emplacement of the White Hill Intrusives, both early and late Permian direction have been isolated. These directions indicate a mid-latitude origin for the Brookstreet terrane, and suggest a strong clockwise rotation between early and late Permian time. A published paleomagnetic result from the younger, but related, Murihiku terrane suggests that the Brookstreet terrane was sutured to the margin of Gondwanaland by the late Triassic, or that the Brookstreet and Murihiku are two distinct terranes.

Computerisation of mine planning activities, specifically in the areas of geology, design and surveying, has been in progress for a number of years in underground metalliferous mines. The combined capabilities of hardware and software have only recently reached the levels necessary to fully support integrated mine planning computer systems in a graphical three dimensional environment. Despite the apparent capabilities of systems now on the market, many sites retain significant parts of their older paper based systems, and employ a mix of two or more software packages. This paper examines what underground metalliferous sites are doing in this area in Australia, and discusses the factors which are inhibiting full implementation of fully integrated computerised systems. Future directions for further developments in the field are also briefly discussed.

Over the last five years Du Pont (Australia) Ltd has developed a commercial range of new generation emulsion based explosives concurrently with the development of new explosives-placement systems. The paper outlines Du Pont's emulsion technology and history of product development from the initial emulsions (Tovex E & EL) to emulsion/ANFO blends (Tovex BE) through to the most recent development of Du Pont's SOL emulsion component. The paper also outlines the development of materials handling systems on site to load waterproof bulk explosives from the original pumper trucks through to the multipurpose agitator bowl blending and pumping units at the heart of Du Pont's SOL emulsion system currently available within Australia. The last section deals with some of the more important features of enhanced agitator bowl truck designs and outlines examples of the complete SOL emulsion system and methods of operations currently practiced at specific mines within the Bowen Basin coalfields.

"This study investigates the dual function of a temperature responsive anionic co-polymer of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) as a selective flocculant/flotation collector. PNIPAM is used for separating hematite from 50:50 mixtures of hematite and quartz, at a variety of particle sizes. The performance of PNIPAM in this system is compared to that of conventional flotation collectors: sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The results of the study demonstrate that anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST)) is the most effective flotation collector for hematite particles in the size range between 10 and 20 ¦m. This is attributed to the increased probability of both particle/bubble collision and particle/bubble attachment through the formation of hydrophobic hematite aggregates. Anionic PNIPAM used at 50¦C also produced the highest hematite recoveries for very fine hematite particles (circa 1 ¦m). However this recovery was completely unselective. This lack of selectivity is partially attributed to the activation of quartz particles by PNIPAM, but is thought to mainly occur as a result of entrapment of quartz particles within the matrix of hematite aggregates.CITATION:Forbes, E and Franks, G V, 2013. The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs copper/gold operation disposes of approximately 222 000 dry metric tonnes of tailings per day via two thickeners. Reduction of the flocculant dosage rates in each of the tailing thickeners has been achieved with the installation of Clarometers«, modifications to the existing operating DCS control strategy and a change in plant flocculant. This has reduced the flocculant consumption rate in the last twelve months by approximately 20 per cent. It has also highlighted the disparity in the settling rates of the two thickeners. Collaborative efforts between Cytec technical site engineers and Freeport operational personnel have made possible the overall gains achieved in the tailings thickener optimisation.

Pyrite is a significant gangue sulphide mineral in the Ok Tedi copper ore. Its presence in the flotation concentrate is not entirely desirable since it lowers the grade of the final copper concentrate. Lime depression of the pyrite has been practiced with some success. However, it has been observed that at the pH for pyrite depression a significant amount of the pyrite particles still float. To obtain further insight into the problem this work has been conducted to determine the composition, natural floatability and xanthate flotation behaviour of the various types of pyrite in the ore. The flotation results show that while some types of pyrite float well at high pH values, others are readily depressed. The implications of these results for Ok Tedi flotation plant have been Considered.

Grade control is an important factor in the on-going success of a mining operation. Grade control criteria will vary depending on the commodity being mined. Financial considerations determine the actual grade control criteria at any one mine site. Mining and metallurgical capital and operating costs are ultimately used in ascertaining cut-off grades employed in grade control. The metallurgical characteristics of the ore, and ultimately the equipment selection and design of the plant, are based on samples provided by the exploration geologist. Ore variability is an important factor in designing the process plant. Ore variations, outside of those catered for in the design, as well as large ore changes on a daily basis, will impact on the metallurgical performance, and hence the economics of a mining operation. Therefore good liaison between the grade control geologist and metallurgist will undoubtedly lead to a more consistent, and more profitable mining operation.

The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

The goal of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. De- partment of the Interior, diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and mini- mize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel-powered equipment in under- ground mines. Significant results of research conducted during the last 5 years are briefly described, with references to published reports on specific topics. Topics covered here include brief discussions of a newly completed diesel research laboratory, the effects of a fuel addi- tive on diesel exhaust particulate matter, the effect of diesel engine maintenance on emis- sions, a diesel particulate filter for equipment used in underground metal and nonmetal, and coal mines, and lastly, the prototype hydrogen- powered mine vehicle. These research accomplishments could favor- ably affect the mining industry by reducing the health and safety hazards associated with the use of diesel-powered equipment in underground Mines.

"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories.
