Due to the haphazard application of static tests in South Africa, several methods and interpretations have been followed. This has resulted in confusion amongst practitioners and regulators in the use and validity of these methods. Research was done over a two-year period to define standardised methods and interpretation of results. This included laboratory testing and continuous consultation with all interested parties throughout the country. The research yielded a modified ABA, based on several existing methods. The methodology includes AP determination using hydrogen peroxide, and an analysis of the supernatant by ICP. This has the advantage of not only registering reactive sulfur, but also provides the NAG pH, that enhances the interpretation and QC of the tests. Analysis of the supernatant provides an indication of heavy metal solubilisation, should acid conditions arise. One hundred and seventeen samples were compared to Leco S analyses and provided a good correlation. The Leco values were slightly elevated due to the reporting of total S as opposed to æreactive SÆ. The NP method deviates from the usual methodology, in that H2SO4 is used (to provide a field analogy) and the fact that a 24-hour stabilisation period is allowed before back-titration. The latter modification appears to prevent psuedo-buffering by transient phases. These methods have also been tested for repeatability and prove to be robust. A very simple macro-driven spreadsheet, æABACUSÆ, was also developed. This spreadsheet allows the entry of basic data and provides a detailed interpretation and graphical display of typical ABA data. In cases where drill holes are used, the Pennsylvanian approach of volume calculation can also be done with ABACUS. The results of the research have been distributed to interested parties in South Africa and it is hoped that these methods and their application will find widespread acceptance.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. Uncertainties in large open pit geotechnical modelling has been a major concern for slope stability analysis. The level of confidence in the in-put assumptions, such as structural and rock mass model, dictates the modelling results to some extent. This article is to detail a case study of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) regarding a predicted inter-ramp failure on an as-built pit walls by a 3D numerical modelling. Significant concerns were raised across site and multiple preventive plans were considered. After intense data collection work, it was confirmed that the risk of failure had been overestimated. The case study has improved the understanding of geotechnical data in-put and has enhanced the process of creating and updating geotechnical structural models at KCGM.

Polycrystalline and surface complexes (at synthetic sphalerite, ZnS, and galena, PbS) of zinc(II) and lead(II) ions with eight different O,OÆ-dialkyldithiophosphate (Dtph) substances have been prepared and comparatively studied by means of 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The 31P resonances have been assigned to dithiophosphate groups with terminal S,SÆ-chelating or bridging coordinations in the mono-, bi-, tetra- and polynuclear complexes respectively. The bridging coordination of two neighbouring zinc(II) ions by O,OÆ-dialkyldithio-phosphate ligands was established at the surface of synthetic sphalerite.The adsorption mechanism of dialkyldithiophosphate on synthetic galena includes formation of a surface complex as well as surface precipitation. Principally different coordination modes of the reagent were discovered at the surfaces of galena and sphalerite (ie terminal S,SÆ-chelating coordination to the lead atom).Derivatives of monothiophosphoric and phosphoric acids were displayed as hydrolysis products of dialkyldithiophosphates at synthetic PbS.

Mining is currently undergoing a progressive expansion into novel environments (such as the deep ocean), commodities (such as tantalum, rare earths, and other ‘green economy minerals’), and new methods (such as the autonomous underwater cutting machines required to operate in the deep ocean environment, or the use of expanding grouts to deliver a blast-free mining method). The advent of novel mining, environments and commodities heralds an era that will undoubtedly start with much discomfort on the part of regulators and stakeholders, due to a feeling of overwhelming uncertainty. These proposed mining scenarios have few precedents, few examples of successful implementation, short baseline monitoring periods, and few examples of legacy sites that may assist with understanding long term risk and exposure. The evolution of the environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) process in many regulatory environments recognises stakeholder engagement in a formal and facilitated manner. This is a positive step, and allows stakeholders to be much more meaningfully involved in the permitting process than they historically were. However, with this advance comes the challenge of identifying and communicating with stakeholders; sharing information in a meaningful way, fostering relationships with what can be an extremely large group, and delivering on commitments that inspire confidence to permit operations that have never been permitted before. In order to meet this challenge, it is suggested that changes to collection of data, communication of data, the nature of commitments, and the reporting of performance need to be made in order to effectively communicate management of new technologies, and the impacts that mining may have in new environments (such as the deep ocean). The communication challenge is necessarily greater when describing technology that has never been used, or environments that have never previously been accessed by humans on an industrial scale. Several nuclear techniques have been assessed for application to online conveyor belt analysis of oil yield from Rundle oil shale. The most favourable technique is neutron inelastic scattering which determines the total carbon content of bulk shale samples. Correlations of chemical laboratory assays for 540 Rundle oil shale samples show that oil yield can be predicted from total carbon to within 11 litre/tonne.Laboratory experimental work on 17 bulk samples of Rundle oil shale indicated that carbon and oil yield can be determined to within 0.6 wt per cent and 9 litre/tonne, respectively, using the neutron inelastic scatter technique. A practical neutron inelastic scatter gauge for application on a 23 mm thick reinforced conveyor belt could consist of a 5 curie 241 Am-Be neutron source and a 150 mm diameter x 100 mm thick Nal(TI) detector. With this gauge, the analysis time to achieve a counting statistical error of 6 litre/tonne should be about five minutes.

In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans European railway corridors. These tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. The excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffi c tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. With the great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstifi ed rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. This lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. With the present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. The research and development efforts presently underway with the intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

Other than being reasonably certain of the average vertical stress being lithostatic, there can be little certainty about stress in the ground. The stresses and strains in rock are a function of gravitational effects, external load, thermal changes, diagenesis and their mechanical properties including elastic, creep and post failure behaviours. It is highly desirable to measure stress where mining is going to take place, even if the virgin stress condition has already been changed by mining. The concept of some far field stress value that is more or less constant is usually invalid and can be dangerous to use in mine design. Measuring stress is not simple. The basic processes are broken into two categories, one where the rock will not fail around the borehole in which the stress is being measured and one where the rock has failed or will fail. Because of the complexity and cost in obtaining a single, precise stress measurement it is highly desirable to have some system to be able to obtain an idea of the uniformity, or otherwise of the stress situation between precise measurements. Table 1 shows the methods for measuring stress. The first five methods work on the basis of some fairly direct measurement of mechanical rock behaviour while the last three are attempts to get some idea of stress out of core long after it is removed from the host rock. While these latter methods appear to tick all the boxes for applicability there is a great deal of uncertainty in the results that they deliver. This paper reviews the methods for measuring stress and presents two new methods. These are a three dimensional overcore system to provide precise stress measurements in rocks that will not fail around the borehole and a core ovality system. The latter can be used to provide information on the stress difference orthogonal to the core. It is particularly useful because it can be used every metre of core length.

Uncertainty in prediction and modelling of geological (physical) ore continuity in geometrically complex ore deposits is a key risk factor in mining. Reducing geometric uncertainty of hard-boundary ore/waste contacts and related geological features improves the efficiency of local mineral resource estimation and reserve calculation, mine/stope planning, ore control and in-mine exploration. Detailed underground mapping of serial-level drives provides a continuous record of the characteristics and contact configuration of ore, as well as crucial ore-related geological features that are required to resolve geometrical variability when closely spaced drilling proves inadequate or is cost-prohibitive. The mapping-based approach described in this paper re-establishes the focus on the geology of the orebody by incorporating high-value, detailed geologic mine mapping information. Mapped ore-related configurations and relationships, recorded on a succession of faces or on a series of levels, provide the basis for 3D interpolation and extrapolation of the local geologic continuity of an orebody. Correlative points representing locations of key ore-related geologic features on each face or level are linked by 3D polylines or trajectories forming a coherent geometrical framework. The coherent progression of geometric changes mapped by these trajectories reveals the overall ‘dynamic’ of the geometrical framework, as well as the spatial tendencies of its geological constituents. Distinct sets of ore control trajectories are selected from within the framework and are used in the construction of alternative geological ore continuity models. As mining proceeds, alternative models are evaluated, and are then either refined or rejected. The geometrical framework is used to evaluate theoretical models and practical heuristics, focus exploration targeting and inform and guide all aspects of mine geology in active mines. This approach also lends itself to analysis of global ore continuity in the re-evaluation of mature or abandoned mines. Its use is particularly effective in geometrically complex orebodies such as the West Branch orebody and the orebodies of No 2 mine of the Balmat-Edwards-Pierrepont zinc district, which are used to illustrate the method. The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. The new law on Environmental Protection and Management (Republic of Indonesia Law 32 of 2009) was passed by the Indonesian parliament in September 2009. This law aims to protect Indonesia's rapidly degrading environment by providing tougher provisions for both polluters and law enforcers. In doing so, the law introduces a number of new constraints and potential business risks that will affect all companies in Indonesia, particularly mining companies. Some of the newly introduced concepts follow.   Mining companies will now require an environmental license, issued by the Minister of Environment or local counterparts. This license is a prerequisite for all other business and operational permits. The Minister can revoke the environmental license at any time in case of an environmental incident or dispute. Mining companies may be exposed to additional environmental taxes and bonds besides already existing reclamation and mine closure bonds.   There is an increased risk of environmental lawsuits, due to more stringent controls on one side and greater protection for NGOs on the other side who make claims, false or true, against the company. Company executives and managers can be sued and they will be held accountable if environmental degradation has indeed occurred due to the company's activities.   Companies may face increased liabilities due to a change in the definition of contamination. The new definition is more stringent (and on occasion may prove too stringent to be practical); it also provides little room for flexibility in its application.   As implementing regulations are prepared over the coming two to three years, mining companies will need to adjust to the new law. A proactive approach is needed to minimise risk. Recommended actions include: upgrading existing environmental impact assessments to a higher standard; conducting baseline studies and thoroughly documenting environmental conditions on a regular basis; closely tracking regulatory changes, especially the forthcoming implementing regulations on the new environmental law; and regularly engaging key government and community stakeholders on environmental issues.

The manganese ore of Groote Eylandt is a shallow sedimentary deposit of Cretaceous age. There are a number of deposits which vary greatly in ore texture, density, percentage of matrix and thickness. The thickness in the present five operating quarries varies from 1-5 metres. The mine output in 1973 was 3 million tonnes of which 60% was blasted, the remainder ripped and bulldozed. The shallow deposit and its varying thickness create rather unique blasting problems which must be overcome in order to produce a minimum overall mining cost but not necessarily resulting in a minimum drilling and blasting cost per tonne. Future planning envisages the introduction of site mixed slurry explosives following test work and the application of a twin boom single operator rotary percussion drill. The paper outlines the overall developments,present and envisaged practices and the reasons for these changes.

BHP BillitonÆs Cannington operation began production in 1997 and is presently the largest tonnage and lowest cost single mine producer of both lead and silver in the world. The original design capacity was 1.5 Mtpa and this has progressively increased via a series of debottlenecking projects in both the mining and milling operations. In 2003, 2.39 Mt of ore was mined, whilst 2.31 Mt of ore was milled. In February 2003 Cannington received approval to expand the project to a sustainable capacity of 2.4 Mtpa. This resulted in underground development into the northern zone, upgrades to the concentrator, increased accommodation at site and power station capacity. The Cannington project development team implemented a partnership approach to the project. Fraser Osborn Engineering and Outokumpu Technology worked closely together with the Cannington team to meet all of the project constraints.

FLSmidth (FLS) has spent the last 15 years, working with customers and engineering houses to deliver innovative improvements in crusher safety, coupled with the latest, maintenance friendly, crusher design. The key focus being to prevent service personnel from working underneath the crusher during maintenance and obviate the need for personnel to be exposed to suspended loads when performing tasks such as, main shaft installation, for example. Improvements include: full top-service capability to ensure the safest and fastest way to disassemble the crusher for maintenance purposes, which also removes the requirement for a service cart; a selfaligning main shaft which ensures remote assembly is now possible, keeping service personnel well out of harm’s way; And rotable shells, or the ability to perform relines off-station, allows for quick shell ‘swap-over’ without the downtime associated with removing, refitting and curing time associated with epoxy backing. The high flow spider improves large material entry into the crusher, reducing blockages and downtime and therefore maintains crusher capacity. Each size of crusher in the range comes with an option to increase the standard feed opening to a larger one if desired to compensate for ‘blocky’ or ‘elongated’ feed material, a common problem for Pilbara hematite iron ores. Power capability has also been increased with a maximum of 1500 kW, to match the higher throughput capacities being achieved. This due to uprated eccentric speeds and larger discharge annulus. Increased eccentric throws and mantle diameters are also now a reality, when compared to more traditional designed gyratory crushers. To keep up with the improved design features of the Mk V, digitalisation has also been upgraded to maximise performance capabilities to ensure that the most efficient reduction and throughput capacities are achieved, whilst utilising the higher powers now available as standard. Condition monitoring ensures that the crusher is at its optimum operating capability by monitoring and adjusting the crusher settings via feedback from additional sensors, ie main shaft spin, temperature and vibration. Camera monitoring capabilities are available as is an advanced oil contamination monitoring system. As a result of the above design improvements, it will be shown that the Mk V range offers benefits such as: enhanced safety features, increased availability, faster maintenance turnarounds, higher power utilisation, equivalent product size at higher throughput capacities and with Remote operation capabilities. All of which result in a gyratory crusher with higher levels of safety and a lower per tonne operating cost.

Mechanical flotation machine design is typically based on hydrodynamic analysis, with scale-up calculated by geometric proportionality. End users often specify and purchase machines on the basis of retention time, characterised by the æ$/m3Æ approach; they may also consider the manufacturerÆs installed base. In some applications, end users also consider specific energy and the impact of energy consumption on operational costs. In other cases, a decision may be based on machine type (forced-air versus self-aspirating) and perceived metallurgical or operational advantages of one machine type over the other. With regard to metallurgical performance efficient bubble-particle contact is very important and is primarily influenced by two factors:the concentration and size distribution of bubbles in the machineÆs contact zone (the volume enclosed by the disperser); and the number of times that slurry is pumped through the contact zone. The second factor is a function of the machineÆs pumping rate and its retention time. Field data show that pumping efficiency is independent of aeration rate. In this paper, a new dimensionless number for the characterisation of flotation efficiency is presented. This paper examines the longer-term predictive capacity of the GAMSPATH computer program (developed by the Alberta Research Council) for a waste rock (sample MS) obtained from the Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) mine, Kalimantan that contained significant framboidal pyrite. The model was refined by comparison with the net acid generation (NAG) and column leach tests to provide a basis for calibration of the model for both short term and longer-term reaction trends. The oxidation of pyrite during the kinetic NAG test using H2O2 provides oxygen directly at the mineral surface, generating a measured oxidation rate for pyrite of 1.16 + 10-6 mol m-2 s-1, whereas the oxygen diffusion limited rate in the leach column air equilibrated reaction was of the order 10-8 mol m-2 s-1 as calculated from the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database. Results indicated that the oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide had to be included as a reactant (eg a reacting mineral) in the simulation to account for the direct availability of oxygen at the sulfide mineral surfaces. Optical investigations identified the proportion, particle size, and surface area, of framboidal and euhedral pyrite in sample MS. The reactive surface areas of the two morphologies were very different (eg ratio: 5:1). To manage these two different pyrite morphologies the GAMSPATH thermodynamic database was updated to include framboidal pyrite, with similar thermodynamic properties and oxidation rate to euhedral pyrite but with a particle size based on the size of the individual internal framboid microcrysts. This modification, with framboidal pyrite reaction based on the size of its microcrysts produced results that correlated well with the kinetic NAG and column leach test results when the measured (kinetic NAG test rate) and calculated (column test rate) pyrite oxidation rates were employed. This provided some confidence that the model could be extrapolated to indicate longer-term geochemical reaction trends.

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of chromite ores with sodium carbonate. Results of tests conducted in a laboratory furnace indicated that the sodium carbonate reacted rapidly with part of the gangue material to form a metastable intermediate that later reacted further with the chromite. For the conditions used, the recovery of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be described empirically as yield % = a tn with a = 0.24 T - 241.3; n = 3.90 - 3.12 × 10-3 T and t is the reaction time in hours.The major rate limiting step in the overall reaction sequence appears to be the rate at which oxygen can get to the reaction sites across the liquid film coating the solid reactants.Sodium sulfate alone was found to be an unsatisfactory source of alkali for reaction with chromite. However when limestone also was added in quantities sufficient to allow the reaction CaCO3 + Na2SO4 + H20 ? Ca SO4 + 2NaOH + CO2 to take place, the results obtained were comparable to those found when sodium car-bonate was used.For chromite particles in the size range -124 + 105 µm, the use of stoichiometric excess of sodium carbonate did not appear to increase the yield or the reaction rate significantly. However, with smaller sized particles, - 53 µm, increased yields of water-soluble chromate were obtained when roasted with more than the theoretical quantity of sodium carbonate.
