The relevant characteristic of the evolution of the Pacific continental margin of South America during the Mesozoic-Early Cenozoic has been tectonic segmentation. This has controlled suc-cesive episodes of sedimentary accumula-tion, extrusive and intrusive magmatism and deformation that ocurred at conver-vergent plate edges. During this inter-val, at least three main transverse boundaries played an important role conditioning the existence of paleo-segments of different longitudinal extent at various Periods. These probably correspond to deep-seated faults in the Huancabamba Deflection and at the Arica-Santa Cruz Line; the third boundary projects westward to the Chile Ridge. Tectonic activity appears to have been continous at the Huancabamba Deflection at least since the Triassic. The Arica-Santa Cruz Line was probably an active boundary during the Triassic and Cretaceous; the southernmost boundary may have started to be active at the end of the Jurassic. This tectonic activity has determined the subsidence - uplift and paleogeographic conditions of the paleosegments.

During the first five years of operation, the Lihir gold mine has steadily increased plant throughput rate to over 4 Mtpa, well above the original design capacity of 2.8 Mtpa. Understanding how future variations in ore type impact on plant performance has been an integral part of LihirÆs development program. This paper discusses the key drivers for significant improvements to the plant, including a second oxygen plant, a pilot flotation plant, an autoclave heat recovery circuit, a pebble crushing circuit and additional autoclave feed pumping capacity. The result is a process plant with the flexibility to accommodate variations in ore type without significant loss of throughput.

Alcoa of Australia's Western Australian bauxite mining operations in the Darling Ranges, southeast of Perth, present major challenges in the control of air blast. The close proximity of rural communities and the face profile make the traditional methods of air blast control difficult.An extensive blast noise monitoring programme has been established. The development of a computerised blast noise prediction model and the establishment of a radiosonde weather balloon facility have reduced blast induced complaints by a factor of ten.The meteorological factors affecting blast noise transmission are discussed and examples are given of adverse weather conditions for the southwest region of Western Australia.

The aim of this paper is to question the need to develop bespoke monitoring and assessment methodologies and criteria, thereby ‘reinventing the wheel’, when designing and assessing the success of important natural habitat and ecosystem restoration schemes at mine sites in the UK and Australia. It draws attention to the existence and applicability of the Phase I Habitat, National Vegetation Classification (NVC) and Condition Monitoring methods in the UK and similar approaches used in Australia. These are long accepted established methodologies and have published accounts for describing, assessing and managing natural vegetation communities, habitats and ecosystems. They are often used at the environmental impact stage, but seemingly rarely, if at all, in restoration design and management at mine closure. Their application to mine restoration and closure is illustrated and discussed by reference to a surface coalmine in South Wales, UK.It is concluded that the application of a combination of the Phase I Habitat, NVC and Condition Monitoring methods is highly relevant to the expectations of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its implementation in the UK, and probably in Australia too. The methodology and criteria described could be incorporated into the guidance and specified in the mining permits so that there is clarity as to the expectations and requirements for monitoring and assessment for bond release. There is currently in the mining industry, as well as in other industries, a movement seeking to increase investments in decarbonisation processes to help combat global warming. Among some initiatives taken is replacing diesel-powered mobile equipment in the mines with electricity-powered equipment, such as electric off-highway trucks or even belt conveyors in the mining operation. Samarco is a Brazilian mining company that since its conception has used a conveyor belt mining system in its mining operation, using only a small number of trucks to complement the mining process. This mining process that combines conveyor belts and trucks has brought environmental gains for the company since the environmental impact of conventional truck-only mining is greater than that of the combined system. To measure these gains, a medium-term mining plan was developed in which two fleet scenarios were detailed. One scenario contemplated a high level of detail of belt mining seeking its maximisation, while the other considered the operation performed 100 per cent by trucks, eliminating the use of conveyor belts. Through the comparison of these two scenarios, it was possible to make an inventory of atmospheric emissions and greenhouse gases for each one of them considering data such as types of equipment, diesel consumption, total distance travelled and energy consumption. The results showed that the fleet scenario with conveyor belts results in periods with up to 15 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and 37 per cent less total particulates compared with the truck-only scenario. Therefore, the results confirm the environmental benefits of the method and the need to look for ways to even expand it in future operations through a study to identify the potential areas in the long-term mining plan.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. In a typical open cast mining operation, investigation of how existing truck performance compares with the highest achievable truck performance is largely neglected. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a computerised system that will provide a systematic method for comparing existing truck operational performance to the highest performance considered achievable. Through analyses of existing versus achievable performances, various inefficiencies associated with truck operations can be identified. These inefficiencies could occur due to machine configurations, haul route design and conditions or operator skill level. Remedial action should then be taken in a timely fashion to better manage these factors and to ensure the fleet is always operating at its peak efficiency.

The Globe-Progress Mine is an open pit gold mine that is part of the larger Reefton Goldfields deposit located on the West Coast of New Zealand. The regional geology comprises a series of north to south oriented fold structures that have undergone post-deformation mineralisation. The structural geology within the mine itself is more complex, with major shears hosting numerous high-grade mineralised quartz shoots and splays that have been historically mined.The selective mining of ore within the pit is challenging due to the orientations of the hanging wall and footwall areas of the main Globe shear zone, the lithologies of these areas which range from highly brecciated and sheared material to competent mineralised host rock, and in the hazards presented by the numerous old historic underground workings. The coordination of drilling, modelling and excavation of the ore requires careful planning to maximise recovery whilst operating with the pit design boundaries.Grade control packages are custom designed to reflect the orientation of the footwall and hanging wall mineralisation. The shear material in the footwall zone dips between 60° and 70° and requires angled drilling whereas the footwall mineralisation is contained in shallow dipping quartz veins sub parallel to bedding and can be vertically drilled to best intercept the mineralisation. Ore excavation is directed so that the contact between the footwall and hanging wall is mined in the correct direction so that any non-visual ore contacts can be safely mined and that the ore-waste dilution is reduced.The ongoing grade control and selective mining of the Globe Progress deposit continues to deliver high grade ore for processing by ensuring that waste and dilution of ore is reduced and that recovery is maximised.

Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). Detailed studies of the microstructures and compositions of zinc and lead blast furnace sinters have been undertaken. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated that in many cases the microstructures of these complex materials can be explained by the solidification of melts from pseudo-ternary phase systems. Further laboratory studies have been carried out to more accurately determine the extent of primary phase fields and the liquidus temperatures in the appropriate binary and ternary systems. This approach shows considerable promise in simplifying the descriptions of slag systems used in oxidising and reduction smelting processes for lead and zinc recovery.

In underground mines experiencing dynamic events, there is an ever-present challenge to design and maintain a capable ground support system. One key component of ground support systems is surface support, which serves the essential roles of retaining failed rock and transferring forces generated by surface displacement to rock bolts or other support elements. Observations underground show that in many instances, standard mesh panels alone do not provide sufficient dynamic support to retain substantial bulking failures imposing displacement onto mesh, and in such cases Mesh straps and W-straps may be employed. Determining the performance of surface support elements proves to be difficult, with a multitude of variables at play in the underground environment. Quite comprehensive work has been completed on laboratory testing of surface support systems; however, very little work has been conducted on in situ dynamic testing of Mesh straps and W-straps. In 2019 in Western Area’s Flying Fox Mine, in situ dynamic testing was conducted on a series of Mesh straps and W-straps using Sandvik’s in situ Dynamic Test Rig (DTR). The testing regime applied impact energies from 5.1 to 15.3 kJ to Mesh straps and W-straps. The performance of the straps that did not fail was a maximum absorbed energy of 9.3 kJ and 14.2 kJ for the Mesh straps and W-straps respectively. The testing successfully demonstrated the ability of Sandvik’s DTR to test not only rock bolts, but also surface support elements, creating new testing and research possibilities. The testing also provided important design guidance data that is not practicable to obtain using laboratory dynamic testing facilities.

Gravity gold circuits have an important part in reducing operating costs and maximising recovery in modern gold plants where coarse gold is present in the ore body. The design and selection of equipment has a vital part in the overall effectiveness of the gravity gold circuit. There are a number of associated factors that need to be taken into consideration when selecting the most suitable equipment for gravity gold circuits including occupational health and safety, security and labour requirements. This paper is a case study that outlines the validation behind the design, selection of equipment and subsequent benefits of the recent upgrade of the gravity circuit at the Marvel Loch gold mine with the main component to the upgrade being the installation of a Consep Acacia Reactor. Since the upgrade there has been a significant increase in gravity recovery, which has reduced the amount of gold reporting to the leaching circuit therefore reducing reagent consumption and overall operating costs. There has been an increase in overall gold recovery and therefore increased gold production. The benefits to occupational health and safety include the removal of toxic gases being released in the gold room during the previous practice of gold concentrate calcination and the removal of the arsenic and nickel from the gold doré, which poses a risk during refining. Manual handling and security has improved as there is no physical contact with gold concentrates during the automated process using the Acacia reactor. The total time for gold room personnel working in the gold room has also reduced from around six hours per day to less than one hour per day.With the continuing development of low grade gold deposits, there will be an increase in demand for low capital, high recovery gravity gold circuits that can significantly increase overall production while reducing operating costs.

All tunnels have unique characteristics that result in different fire and life safety risk. The fire safety systems for each tunnel also give different benefits at different costs. It is therefore neither pragmatic nor cost-effective to prescribe specific fire standards requirements for all tunnels. Each tunnel needs to be assessed individually but using a common process.The owner/client is normally the risk owner and needs to make the decision on what fire and life safety provisions will be provided within the tunnel. To make this decision they need to be appropriately informed. The low probability and high consequence nature of fire events creates a challenge such that traditional analysis processes, which tend to focus on a major event after it has happened, are not easily applied and do not give the best value for money. Therefore a process is required that provides the relevant information to the owner for decision-making.A quantitative risk assessment (QRA) provides a process and framework for the consideration of fire life safety risk when applied properly. This involves a risk assessment of the ‘do nothing’ option together with assessments of improvement options and their costs. It also involves consideration of benchmark safety levels for other tunnels and the open road.This paper will outline a QRA process for assessing fire and life safety risk in tunnels and how this has been used for three existing tunnels, Homer Tunnel, Lyttelton Tunnel and Mt Victoria Tunnel. Key challenges include determining an acceptable safety level, defining realistic inputs, providing sufficient complexity to get meaningful results but not so complex that transparency is lost and interpretation to enable decision-making by non-technical personnel.CITATION:Weaver, S, Wright, B and Ireland, T, 2014. The Newmont Tanami Operations are located in the Northern Territory, approximately 550 km north-west of Alice Springs. The Granites process plant commenced operations in 1986 as a 300?000 t/a ball mill / carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant and has undergone numerous expansions between that time and the current day, with project-to-date gold production exceeding 6.5 Moz. Annual plant throughput has exceeded 2.8 Mt/a while processing a blend of open pit material and ore from the Callie Deeps underground mine, with annual gold production exceeding 400 koz. In 2013 the operation processed 1.8 Mt of underground ore for the production of 323 koz of gold.This paper reviews the operation and expansion of The Granites process plant since the mid to late 1980s with particular focus on the gravity gold recovery circuit. The Tanami ores contain significant levels of free gold, and gravity recovery has long been an integral component of the metal recovery process at the Granites plant. The excavation of a tunnel through rock and mixed ground of basalt and silty clays presents a challenge to engineering organisations. Such was the situation facing the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) in constructing the 15.3 km, 5.5m dia. tunnel component of the new Western Trunk Sewerage System. The tunnel geology showed that there were two distinct components to the excavation - rock and mixed ground. By drawing on extensive experience in the use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's) used previously by the MMBW and using techniques developed for predicting TBM per- formance, a comparison of the options of drill and blast versus TBM was made. The conclusion was that TBM methods would provide the best solution to the problem. Tenders were called for the supply of a TBM. A performance specification was used to attract tenders offering designs which re- flected the state of the art on an internation- al level. Particular features required by the MMBW were included in the specification. The excavation planning and operation are described in this paper. The production achieved has shown that the TBM can very adequately handle rock excavation (best weekly production 167.9m). Extreme conditions of mixed ground with heavy groundwater inflows have been handled using an auxiliary thrust system to maintain gripper reaction through the soft ground encountered.

This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process to provide the background for a more detailed analysis of environmental and social constraints that the Heavy Mineral Mining industry has encountered over the past decade. Four cases studies are reviewed to provide a context for further analysis and identification of cross cutting environmental and social issues that either resulted in the projects not proceeding, or in the Australian case study, places existing operations under significant pressure from anti-mining lobbyists. The Xolobeni project, from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, is presented as the primary case study because it is recent, topical, and accessible; and raised numerous issues related to mining in a sensitive environment. A proposal to mine an area adjacent to the Okefenokee swamps in 1997 was also met with strong opposition from various environmental groups in Georgia, USA. This case study is briefly reviewed to further understand what ultimately resulted in the project not proceeding. Opposition to mining at North Stradbroke Island is reviewed to identify current issues more applicable to a developed country. A further review of a strategic assessment undertaken at Wavecrest, Eastern Cape, South Africa is provided in support of possible solutions to the challenges identified in the case studies. Important common themes were identified, including in some cases unfortunate timing of the environmental studies, but in all cases opposition was due to ecological sensitivity, landscape quality and sense of place. In one case study limitations to the EIA process included inadequate detail in the specialist investigations and insufficient information on mitigation. In all cases public participation was a limitation. It was either insufficient; flawed through possible bias; too ‘top down’ and required engagement with mobilised, motivated lobbyists. There was also insufficient investigation of social impacts, particularly amongst rural communities directly affected by a project. Generally alternatives were inadequately considered, a recognised limitation of project level EIA. It is concluded that the EIA process should be started as early as possible (at prefeasibility), and that investigations should be expanded from a typical fatal flaw assessment to one that applies methodologies used in strategic assessment. In particular, opportunities and constraints of the natural and social environment should be assessed in the context of the mining option as well as other options, to allow for a more meaningful assessment of alternatives. Public participation must form an important part of this initial study, despite the potential risks associated with public engagement at an early stage in the project. The application of the IFC Performance Standards; and expanding the scope of the EIA into an environmental, social and health impact assessment will lead to a more rigorous procedure, and result in more defensible products which could successfully unlock the key to the resources in these sensitive areas.

The theory of froth flotation developed slowly, in almost all cases lagging behind practical developments in the operation of flotation processes. This was largely the result of a lack of understanding of the required basic principles of chemistry and physics, many of which were being developed at the same time. A review of some of the early theories propounded is worthwhile, and should encourage those who are presently studying or practicing flotation to exercise some care in claiming a complete understanding of the underlying phenomena in the art. This paper considers theories presented up to and including those in Principles of Mineral Dressing by Antoine M Gaudin (1939). Of course, developments since that time are important, but they are beyond the scope of this discussion.

"The theme of this International Mining Geology Conference is ‘Setting New Standards’. Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations include a complex integrated supply system to deliver ore from 15 mine operations through four independent terminals over 1700 km of rail line. Significant growth in the past 20 years has seen production grow from 88 Mt in 1997 to 329 Mt for the 2016 calendar year.With more than 50 years of mining in the Pilbara, Rio Tinto has extensive experience in developing standardised approaches to mine geology and the geometallurgical prediction of product quality to meet the increasing growth profile and business planning complexity.Rio Tinto’s standardised approach to mine geology can be developed and utilised on a daily basis to enable the optimisation of the supply chain in terms of tonnages and product quality. This experience demonstrates a fully standardised system can balance the needs of a systematic process across all mine sites and the flexibility for mine geologist to determine and use local properties at each mine; this is done by ensuring two key principals are in place: a single, centrally maintained, system is established and maintained, providing a common set of processes and software across all mine sites the system allows senior mine geologists to review and customise key attributes and product regressions, ensuring site specific data is used in product predictions.The benefits of formal work process and standardisation include health, safety and environment, people and skill development, cost and improved communication. Also product predictions from mine geologists are one of the key inputs into an integrated and dynamic mine to ship scheduling system, optimising the supply chain whilst still managing the product quality. This paper synthesises the findings of five studies undertaken by the CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship in 2009-10. This research explores the concerns, expectations, and information needs of a range of stakeholders, (ie government, seafloor exploration and mining industry, other marine industries, environmental non-government organisations (NGOs), community members) in relation to the possible exploration and mining of minerals and aggregates from the seafloor, as well as the conditions for meaningful engagement with communities regarding seafloor exploration and mining (SEM) activities. The SEM industry has been described as the ‘next minerals frontier’, as incentives to explore and mine seafloor resources increase because of diminishing reserves of easily accessible onshore mineral and aggregate deposits. However, the conditions (if any) under which SEM would be acceptable to stakeholders (notably the public and regulators) have not been established. This work seeks to address this gap and ascertain the levels at which potential environmental and social impacts become unacceptable to those stakeholders. The research follows an earlier phase of studies undertaken in 2006 - 2008 that: identified the opportunities and barriers to the development of SEM in Australia, took the first step towards understanding the public and political contexts surrounding the industry, and mapped the positions of key stakeholders and captured their major issues and concerns. Together, these two phases of research confirm that environmental concerns dominate stakeholders’ responses to the idea of an expanded industry. However, the most recent phase of research has also found that, similar to current onshore scenarios, reservations due to environmental concerns do not completely outweigh social and economic objectives. This is provided stakeholders feel confident that there are systems in place (regulatory frameworks, watchdogs, independent research, and stakeholder consultation) to ensure that all interests are protected. When making decisions about the social acceptability of potential seafloor mining, stakeholders favour a precautionary approach, supported by rigorous scientific analysis of the potential environmental impacts, transparent and socially responsive management processes, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. This paper outlines the details of these findings, which may also be relevant to understanding the social acceptability or ‘social licence to operate’ for other future mining scenarios featuring a new approach or technology.

This paper investigates the causes of low effective utilisation of the production drill fleet at the Telfer Underground Gold Mine, as measured by the percussion hours per shift. The first part of this paper focuses on a site time and motion study conducted to accurately identify shift time allocation and optimal drilling parameters (manual versus automatic, and suitable flushing mediums for varying ground conditions) as well as quantifying the business potential for automated or remotely operated production drilling. The second part of the paper focuses on the rate of successful hole completion for automated production drilling during shift changes. Two main areas of drill optimisation were identified. Firstly, a site-specific drilling procedure was established so as to ensure that all operators were drilling using optimal parameters. Total production metres per rig increased by 10.7 per cent as a result of the implementation of this standard. It was observed that a 25 per cent faster overall drill cycle was achieved using air mist flushing, and that manual drilling achieves a 19 per cent faster overall drilling cycle in comparison to automated drilling. Secondly, routine provision to the maintenance department of automation reliability reports that outlined the principal causes of unsuccessful hole completion led to an increase in production metres of a further 4.1 per cent, measured between January 2007 and August 2007. First hole automation reliability increased from 39 per cent to over 77 per cent over the same time period. Second hole automation completion was increased to 74 per cent, leading to a higher proportion of production achieved through automated technologies.
