Problems of the effect of the number of tuyeres and their parameters on the uni- formity of gas distribution are invest- igated with the use of the authors' devel- oped mathematical model of the movement of gases and materials in the blast furnace. It is shown that the improvement of uni- formity of gas distribution with an increase in the number of tuyeres has a damping character. An analysis of the errors of the specified assumptions of the hypothesis concerning the potentiality of the gas movement in the bed is carried out. It is established that the potential approach model gives good results with the determination of the discharge of gas and its stress field, but is not useful for the calculation of local velocities of gas in the raceway. The results of trials of calculation investigations of the dynamics of form- ation of the raceway and the voidageòfield in beds of burden materials are presented in the concluding part of the paper.

For any resource evaluation program, the collection and processing of representative samples for assaying is critical. Sampling, sample preparation and assay protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The a priori need is for the characterisation of mineralisation type(s) and domain definition. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols employed. Mineralogical studies focusing on gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering and proportion of coarse versus fine gold. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of in situ objects based on density distribution. The ævirtualÆ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ particles in coarse gold-bearing ore samples from the Nalunaq mine, southern Greenland. The samples used were previously well-characterised through mineralogical and metallurgical testing, and serve to test the HRXCT methodology. Most geostatistical techniques applied to the estimation of ore reserves assume relatively unifonn grade and thickness within an ore deposit environment. In shear-hosted mineralisation this rarely occurs. The distribution of mineralisation is controlled by the kinematic and geometric variation within the shear zone. Although the kinematic variation is dependent primarily on the temperature (and consequently the depth) of formation of the deposit, the geometric variation appears to be relatively insensitive to this parameter. Shoot mineralisation is controlled either by the intersection of secoodary shear planes (brittle deformation) or the stretching lineation of the mylonitic fabric (ductile defonnation).Once the shear geometry is clearly identified, it is critical to review the distribution of grade and thickness of mineralisation. The practice of cutting high-grade intersections without reference to the shear model leads to underestimation of the amount of gold in the deposit. High-grade shoots may occur as pipe-shaped bodies within the system; their identification is essential for both resource estimation and mine planning purposes.

A number of ideal detonation codes are used internationally for estimating the strength of explosives compositions. Important and far reaching decisions by explosives users are ofen based on the predictions of these codes, but since different codes can deliver very different answers for the same composition, there is a strong possibility of decision makers being misled. In order to both provide a sensible basis for comparing the theoretical energy from explosives from different manufacturers and to prevent the entire rating system from slipping into disrepute, it is in the interests of all to reach agreement on fundamental criteria used by detonation codes for detemtining strength. The problem is illustrated by a case history and basic conventions are proposed, specifically the adoption of energy of reaction as a fundamental and code independent indicator of explosive energy, and agreement on disclosure by suppliers of key non-proprietary information. These measures would assist explosives customers in assessing the true strengths of explosives from the strengths calculated by the different ideal Codes.

An ongoing research program into surface subsidence over Room and Pillar coal mining is described. A subsidence monitoring network has been established for one Room and Pillar mine in the West Moreton Coal Field of South East Queensland, at which pillar extraction is being conducted. The maximum measured subsidence to 28 January 1986 was 638 mm, with movement continuing. Analysis of the monitoring data with view to application of the subsidence pre- diction theory developed by Kowalczyk (1972) is discussed. The Kowalczyk theory provides predictions of subsidence depression, slope of surface, horizontal displacement, surface curvature and horizontal strain, for both the Partial and Total Settlement cases. The development of subsidence with time is also investigated and a preliminary analysis conducted.

Oxygen is required for the leaching of gold ores in cyanide solutions. The source of this oxygen demand and the effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on the rate of the process are briefly reviewed.A method of measuring the oxygen consumption rate is described and some experimental results reported.Fundamental aeration theory and rating of aerators is summarised to show how this type of experimental work provides the basis for full-scale design of aeration equipment.

There is a Chinese saying-may you live in interesting times. Certainly we do tod.a~our mining professions. We are, of course, totally dependent on a' healthy mining industry for the chance to practice our chosen professions, and for our Institute.Let us look at one of the more interesting facts. The mining industry now accounts for some 50 per cent of Australia's exports.This massive earning of foreign exchange is the key to keeping our increasing overseas debt in check. Furthermore, mineral production..including petroleum, saves us a large amount of foreign currency by providing essential minerals, including energy minerals, for local consumption.With such fundamental inputs to our economy, any primary school student, any child in fact, should be able to see that the mining industry and mining professions are very important to our nation. Yet the average citizen is unaware of this simple fact as they enjoy their high standard'of living and think that we are still living in the lucky country.Therefore, it is most interesting to me that the average citizen, and most of our politicians, seem to hold mining and miners in low esteem. I use the term miners to describe all those important people, like us, who work in the mining professions, and are employed by, or are dependent on, the mining industry.So why are we miners in this paradoxical situation of doing wonderful works, being the backbone of the country, and yet being held in low regard by the very community we underwrite.Truly-it is interesting-or did the Chinese mean intriguing?It is indeed paradoxical that we are the rare people who open up the land, borrow small parts of it for a relatively short time to harvest the mineral crops, then return it to the community for other uses; and when we return the land back to the community at large it should be in better shape than when we started. There will be infrastructure - roads, airstrips, supplies of water and power, parks and housing-all left behind after mining.These benefits to the community are ignored while our critics focus on the small scars on the landscape which sometimes cannot be healed at reasonable cost; and yet, if we allow time, nature usually heals the small scars anyway. Look at New Zealand, particularly the Coromandel Peninsula which was intensively mined and logged; now it is covered with secondary growth and stark pine plantations. Remember that mining scars are infinitesimally small when compared to urban sprawl or clearing of land for farming and grazing, or highways, or the area of most national parks.Thus, miners are important citizens economically, and we are the majority of the few who actually practice the principles of multiple land use.What are the consequences of our image? They are serious in that the poor image we seem to project, discourages many people from becoming involved in, or supportive of, our industry. This brings me to my theme for the year: Students, Education and Communication - the Key to our Future.

THIS paper deals with the handling of the various materials used in the 100-ton zinc plant at Risdon, and, in view of the magnitude of the works, the configuration of the ground covered by these works, the variety of the rnaterials used, and the large quantities, a very attractive and interesting subject is opened.The works are situated on the right bank of the River Derwent, about four miles above Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. The Risdon works cover a space of 149 acres, the area being :3800 yards long by 2800 yards wide, and the elevations vary from 6 ft. above high-water mark at the wharf and foreshore to 163 ft. above high-water mark at the power station, these being the limiting points as regards elevation which are considered in this paper. Throughout the paper elevations are given in feet above high-water mark. Fig. 1 shows a general view of the works taken from the opposite bank of the River Derwent. The wharf is clearly shown, with SS Kekerangu loading residue; behind the wharf is seen the inclined conveyor leading to the cakine bin; further up the hill is the leaching division. No. 1 haulage runs to the left of this up to a point on the left of the power station, the large reinforced concrete building at the top of the hill. Below this is the cell room, the largest building on the plant. The roasting division, not very clearly seen, lies at the foot of the main stack, and the casting division lies to the left of this, between the leaching division and the cell room. A large wharf has been construl'ted alongside the works. This wharf is 880 ft. long and 60 ft. wide. It is capable of berthing large overseas steamers, as at low tide there is a depth of :30 ft. of water. The rise and fall of the tide at the wharf is 4 ft. 6in., and the river is navigable at all states of the tide. Just above the company's wharf...

The Cadjebut Mine is located 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing. Cadjebut is owned 58 per cent by BHP Minerals and 42 per cent by Billiton Australia. Cadjebut is a 'Mississippi Valley Type' (MVT) deposit. Minerals present are sphalerite, galena and marcasite in a sedimentary host of dolomite and siltstone. The ore contains few deleterious impurities and no silver. The mill was commissioned in the first half of 1988 at a rate of 320 000 tonnes per annum. An expansion in the latter half of 1989 has since increased production to 550 000 tonnes per annum. The initial geological resource at the commencement of mining was 3.8 million tonnes at 13.5 per cent Zn and 4.4 per cent Pb. There is sufficient ore left to sustain operations to 1995 at a grade of 11.2 per cent Zn and 3.9 per cent Pb. The ore from underground is stockpiled on the surface via a drift conveyor and from the stockpile is fed into a grinding circuit consisting of a SAG and ball mill. Cyclone overflow at a Pgp of 90 pm gravitates to the flotation circuit. Lead and zinc are sequentially floated to produce an 80 per cent Pb grade at 90 per cent recovery and a 61 - 62 per cent Zn grade at 96 per cent recovery. The concentrates are thickened and filtered before being trucked to the port of Wyndham 600 km away. From Wyndham the concentrates are shipped to smelters in Asia, Europe and Australia.

The Macquarie Dictionary defines `information' as: knowledge communicated or received concerning some fact or circumstance; (in communicating theory): a quantitative measure of the contents of a message. For mining companies investing in data capture and information processing technology for operations management is a key issue. Beyond producing performance related information that employees can relate to it is being able to deliver that information into the workplace when it is required, to the employees that can utilise it. To be effective the data needs to be received and understood as `information'. The technology is now available and proven to enable `information' to be delivered into the mining workplace adding value to the activities performed by mine employees. The application of computers and information technology in the mining industry has typically been limited to the resource definition and planning stages, accounting and administration and the process plants that treat the ores and minerals. The mining extraction processes that consume expenditure and determine output in a mining operation occur in an environment dominated by unpredictable events and variable conditions. The mining operation has long been regarded as an inexact science conducted in unpredictable circumstances with many independent variables affecting the output and resultant cost of production. Financial accountants keep track of expenditure and management accountants analyse the cost of production usually on a weekly or monthly basis but all this effort can't affect the outcome, that was determined by the real time events and variations of circumstances over a week ago. Such reporting and analysis can result in conclusions being drawn about what improvements can be made and how you might do better next time, but generally the data is not detailed enough, is inaccurate or misrepresents the real issues. The capital investment required for any mining operation is substantial and comparable to other industries such as manufacturing. The performance and utilisation of manufacturing plants is usually closely monitored down to the lowest level of detail. Many modern plants are controlled and optimised using programmable intelligent devices and monitors display real time performance to the operators and prompt them to make informed decisions to maximise production and minimise wastage. Technology suitable for the mining industry is now widely available and has proven to be a reliable and powerful tool for the optimisation of mining operations. This paper focuses on the latest information technology developed by Modular Mining Systems that has been implemented in mining operations worldwide. The benefits reported by the mining companies utilising real time information technology over the past 15 years have generally related to optimisation of truck fleet allocation and material blending. Some mining operations have reported improvements in equipment utilisation of greater than 20 per cent. With the development of real time graphical display screens in the operators cabins the benefits of information delivery can be harnessed to make employees more effective in the workplace.

In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. Zinc recycling from galvanised steel scrap, either before or after scrap melting, will have to be Implemented.

The theory of declining optimimum cut-off grades is more than 25 years old, but for a number of reasons it is still not widely used in industry. A lack of faith in the veracity of estimated grades is not in itself a reason to abandon any attempt to optimise cut-off grades. The use of declining cut-off grades has been thought to cause high-grading, but in fact this is only true if an artificially high discount rate is used in the calculations. Perfect application of an optimum cut-off grade should ensure that only ore generating more than a minimum net return is mined, and that as much as possible of the ore capable of generating that return is mined. Therefore differing mining costs in different parts of some underground mines necessitate local modifications to cut-off grade. Optimisation of cut-off grade is of necessity an iterative process. Integration of that process into a feasibility study need not be excessively time-consuming. A number of approximations can be made to speed the optimisation (any attempt to achieve a high level of accuracy is probably doomed to failure by a lack of precise cost and price projections). A procedure is outlined for optimising cut-off grade during planning of a typical underground mine.

The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

Computer-based block modelling of orebodies is now used at Renison Tin mine for the estimation of ore reserves. It is considered that this has resulted in improved reserve estimation for complex 'stratafault' orebodies. The results for all orebody types are more easily understood by the mine planning section and provide greater scheduling capability than those from the previous manual isoline reserve estimation method. A structural overview of the deposit can be gained by combining geological block models for the various orebodies. It is anticipated that upon completion of block modelling for all the orebodies the time spent on the annual ore reserve estimate will be significantly reduced.

Industrial and telecommunications organizations around the world are now turning to optical fibres to satisfy their growing needs for data, voice and video communications and to solve transmission problems in noisy and hazardous environments. Already, coaxial cables have been made obsolete for intermediate and long distance applications and fibres are making in-roads on other copper cable and microwave system techniques.The idea of optical fibres is not new, but techniques to manufacture the high quality cable and components required have only recently been developed. Nonetheless, the technology is now advanced, reliable and mature, and costs are plummeting with increased production and market competition.The mining industry has benefited greatly from developments in electronics and communications over the years. Optical fibres are to have a further significant impact and the time is now right for the industry to begin to exploit the many advantages of this new medium. Applications include data transmission, long distance telecommunications, measurement and control systems, surveillance, computer networks, etc.This paper briefly describes the characteristics of optical fibres, current status of the technology, applications and possibilities for future development.

The underground mining of a narrow vein hard rock orebody is a capital and labour intensive method of extraction. Due to the nature of underground mining it is difficult for higher level managers to physically see the efficiencies and inefficiencies of a particular method. Extraction methods and sequencing often need to be altered from the original planned methods as a result of mine developent, providing more in depth information as it progresses. As a result of these issues contract mining of these orebodies is common practice. There are several types of contract structures for the purpose of underground contract mining with many complex permutations of them that reflect the different needs of each individual company and orebody. The different contracts are arranged dependent on the mining companyÆs desire to transfer or, alternatively, embrace risk. This presentation gives a brief overview on these different methods and their various advantages and limitations with regard to small scale and narrow vein underground mining. With respect to these different contracting methods, the presenter reviews the mutual growth benefits of emerging partnering opportunities, specifically with regard to smaller explorers exploring and developing prospective mining tenements. The specific advantages to small explorers include the resource flexibility and speed of project development that private mining contractors can provide. Given the contracting methods that are available, there is potential for small private mining companies to gain minor stakes in major projects and major stakes in medium sized projects by employing innovative contracting solutions to provide mutual benefits to the parties. The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems an particularly prone to developing the complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permcahilit} that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits.
