In a recent review of the field of plastic deforrnation of metal single crystals, Maddin and chenl indicated the need for systematic investigations of the crystallography of the slip process with special attention to: a) The effect of the orientation of a crystal on the appearance of slip lines, b) The effect of high temperatures on the slip systems of aluminum, c) The effect of strain rate on the crystallography of slip. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature and strain rate on the mechanism of deformation of aluminum single crystals similarly oriented for single and duplex slip. The work of several investigators has shown that in aluminum at high temperatures other slip systems in addition to the predicted {I l l) <101> may operate. The purpose of this work is to show application of laboratory data in calculating solution gas-drive performance of the Cisco K-I reservoir. Included herein is a diagram showing the graphical relationship between six variables common to all solution gas-drive mechanisms. With an iterative process one may assume existence of any of these six variables at a particular pressure and calculate the production performance likely to occur in a reservoir produced by solution gas drive. Four unique pressure values are described at which the material balance equation alone is sufficient to predict the cumulative volumes of gas produced. Information derived from these pressure points establishes a criterion for determining compatibility of the pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) analysis of the produced crude with the gas production history. Two averaging procedures are used to arrive at a relative permeability-saturation relationship which describes the field-wide performance. INTRODUCTION The Cisco K-1 reservoir is a lenticular-type sand structure lying at approximately 6,300-ft subsurface. It is located in the H. and T. C. Railroad Co. Block 97, SW 1/4 S 392 and NW 1/4 S 385, Scurry County, Tex. Correlation of data from logs indicated that the Cisco K-1 reservoir occupied approximately 3,218 acre-ft of space with a closure of from 15 to 20 ft. Analysis of the production data indicates that the initial formation pressure and temperature were 2,450 psig and 121°F, respectively. The bubble point occurred at 1,715 psig after production of 12,256 STB oil and 11,520 Mcf gas. Only traces of water have been produced since initiation of production. Successive material balance calculations from June, 1952, to June, 1957, showed that no initial gas cap or water influx has contributed to production of oil and that the Cisco K-1 reservoir originally contained approximately 1.44 X 10" STB of oil. HISTORICAL concepts of the economics of the glass-sand industry are changing rapidly. The greatly expanded demand for glass containers combined with higher freight rates on raw materials and manufactured products have induced a migration of glass factories toward densely populated centers and the creation of new standards of place value for sub- standard sand deposits. This migration has been facilitated by the construction of pipelines to bring cheaper natural gas and liquid fuel to large cities and may be further speeded by the adoption of modern mineral dressing methods to permit economical utilization of local raw materials. Our national resources of naturally high-grade 1 silica sand are abundant, but most of the best de- posits are situated so far from large centers of population that it now costs $3.00 to $5.00 a ton to carry the sand from the mine to the optimum site for a 1 factory making beverage bottles, scientific and electrical glassware, and miscellaneous blown and pressed ware for local markets. It follows that on the basis of freight savings alone it may be economical to use material from inferior deposits closer to the factory even though the f.o.b. cost of mining and treatment may be much high

Adsorption of calcium and magnesium by quartz was determined over a wide pH range using flame photometry for solution analysis. A parallelism was noted between calcium adsorption at alkaline pH and flotation of activated quartz by means of various fatty acid collectors. Abstraction of calcium from 100 ppm solutions increased above pH 10.5 until all of the calcium was removed at pH values between 12 and 12.5. Calcium was desorbed from the quartz over the pH range 12.5 to 13.0 and returned to the solution. Precipitation of magnesium hydroxide prevented measurement of magnesium adsorption above a pH of 9.9. A calcium adsorption isotherm determined at pH 9 matched measurements of barium adsorption by other investigators over the range where adsorption corresponded to the equation of a Freundlich adsorption isotherm. In accordance with the Gouy-Chapman theory for adsorption in the diffuse layer, adsorption of the divalent cations under these conditions was four times the adsorption of monovalent sodium. Activation of quartz by multivalent metal cations in flotation using anionic collectors has been studied by many investigators. The occurrence of activator cations in the water of flotation mills makes depression of silaceous gangue very difficult. Alternatively, in some flotation systems it is practical to cause activation of quartz so that it is floated from the desirable mineral values. The present study was initiated to investigate the activation of quartz by measuring adsorption of calcium and magnesium ions as a function of solution pH. Early empirical tests showed that quartz would be activated to flotation using anionic collectors if any of a number of divalent or trivalent metallic cations were present in the pulp.1*2 Subsequent studies by Clemmer,3 Cooke and Digre,4 Cooke,5 Schuhmann and Prakash,6 and Cooke, Iwasaki, and Choi,7-8 showed that flotation depended strongly upon the alkalinity of the flotation pulp, the concentration of the activating cations, and the chain length and structure of the organic collectors used. The concept of the electrical double layer has been applied to the case of the quartz-aqueous solution interface by Gaudin and Fuerstenau,9-10 and by de Bruyn 11 to explain the activation of quartz by multivalent metal cations. Studies of the surface of quartz by Gaudin and Fuerstenau9,10,12 and by Li " using the streaming potential technique contributed much information on the electro kinetic condition of the surface of quartz in the presence of various organic and inorganic ions. THIS paper. will present the results of our studies on the kinetics of the gas phase reactions of co-lumbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2. Studies on zirconium and titanium have been previously reported.9,11 Due to their high melting points and their many excellent physical and chemical properties, colurn-bium and tantalum have been finding their places as useful metals in science and industry. Chemically the metals are very inert to gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures of 250°C and higher the metals react readily with oxygen and hydrogen. It is of interest to study the gas phase reactions of these metals for the following reasons: (1) to compare the rates of the several reactions with those of other metals and to correlate the rate data with theory and structure predictions, (2) to add basic information on the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of columbium and tantalum, (3) to anticipate new uses for the metals and (4) to understand the role that the metals play as components in high temperature alloys. Literature Survey A number of papers exist in the literature on the gas phase reactions of columbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2; however, only fragmentary data have been reported on the kinetics of these reactions. Although the free energy of formation of the oxide Ta2O520at 25°C has been determined and some thermodynamic work has been reported on columbium and its oxides, the data are not sufficient to make equilibria calculations at elevated temperatures. Oxidation: 1. Kinetics: The rate of oxidation of columbium and tantalum has been studied by McAdam and Geil23 using the interference color method. Tantalum is reported to oxidize more slowly than columbium, zirconium and iron. The amounts of oxidation of columbium after 20 hr in air for several temperatures are reported by the Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation.36 Columbium starts to oxidize in air at about 200°C. The oxide is said to be adherent and prevents further oxidation until the temperature is raised. Columbium is reported not to become brittle on heating in air for short periods like tantalum because the oxide film prevents further reaction. The columbium oxides dissolve into the metal when heated in a vacuum at temperatures between red heat and 1200°C. Above 1200°C the oxides are reported to evaporate. Columbium, in the oxide free state, is an active getter in vacuum tubes. 2. Preparation and Structure: G. Grube, O. Kuba-schewski and K. Zwiauer15 have studied the decomposition of Cb2O5 in argon. They find that CbO2 is formed slowly at 1150° and rapidly at 1300°C. Cb2O5 can be reduced to CbO2 by moist H2. The reduction of this dioxide to the lower oxides is rapid. By varying conditions CbO2, Cb2O3, CbO and Cb2O can be formed. CbO2, CbO and Cb2O have independent lattices while Cb2O3 is a stoichiometric mixture of CbO and CbO2. In a later paper O. Kuba-schewski" has shown that CbO is cubic and that CbO2 has a rutile type of lattice. The most exhaustive work on the oxides of columbium is that of G. Brauer.8 The number and constitution of the solid phases in the binary system Cb-O were investigated by the preparative, analytical and X ray methods. During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. After talking over the probable reasons for this with a number of chemists and metallurgists, it was suggested that it would be of real use and some scientific interest to send samples to the different chemists, and take such care in making up the samples that we could feel sure that each chemist had as nearly identical a sample as it was possible to make. rr has long been suspected that sulphur has a small but finite solid solubility in iron, but up to the present more accurate data have been lacking. The survey given by Hansen&apos; illustrates the divergence of data and opinions. Solubilities between 0.01 and 1.5 pct have been suggested, and opinions vary regarding the effects of temperature and phase transformations in iron on the sulphur solubility. The extent of solid solution and its variation with temperature might be expected to be an important factor in the occurrence of hot shortness in steel. Therefore, the object of the present investigation was to study this problem more systematically. It was furthermore hoped that solubility data for sulphur might contribute to an understanding of the factors which determine solid solubilities in general. Experimental Procedure The present work was based on the measurement of the chemical activity of sulphur in the solid solution by means of equilibrium with a mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. When the solid solubility limit is reached, the sulphur activity in the iron becomes equal to that in the coexisting sulphide phase. A gas mixture of a controlled H,S/H, ratio was passed over pure metallic iron heated to a temperature in the range 900" to 1500". The amount of sulphur absorbed by the iron was determined by analysis, and from a plot of percentage of sulphur vs. gas composition the sulphur activity and the solubility limit were determined. As the rate of diffusion of sulphur in solid iron is very small, often several days were needed to be sure that equilibrium conditions had been established. To produce a gas flow with less than 1 pct H,S of constant composition for several days, was in itself a problem. The most satisfactory arrangement was obtained by a continuous synthesis of hydrogen sulphide from the elements. This was done in the part of the apparatus shown to the left in Fig. 1. In 1926 one of the authors published researches on the determination and description of the iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum systems,&apos; including the equilibrium diagrams. In 1929, further work was carried on, including the examination by X-rays, which is recorded here. Meas-urements were made of changes in lattice parameters in the solid solutions. Precipitation from the solid solution and the accompanying changes in hardness were studied as well as the formation of the intermetallic com-pound phases upon sintering a mixture of metal powders. Materials All the specimens were prepared from the same quality of metals and by the same methods as were described in the determination of the constitutional diagrams. The metal powders as mixed and pressed were sintered or fused in a hydrogen atmosphere and subsequently treated as indicated in the titles of the figures. The formation of the iron-rich solutlon in the solid was accomplished by sintering in hydrogen for a period of 20 to 30 hr. at a temperature 25&apos; to 50&apos; C. below the melting point of the eutectic. The tungsten-rich and molybdenum-rich solid solutions of iron were prepared by adding the iron as a solution of iron ammonium oxalate to the oxide of tungsten or molybdenum, followed by a hydrogen reduction. This method results in a homogeneous alloy after sintering the pressed metal powder for 20 to 30 hr. at a temperature slightly below that of the peritectic reaction in the system involved. For X-ray examination the specimens were variously prepared, depending on the nature of the sample and what it was desired to show. For example, the iron containing tungsten or molybdenum in solid solution was cut with a file, the chips were put through bolting cloth, and this powder of filings formed the specimens for comparative study. The Kentucky Geological Survey(KGS) was established in 1854 as the official geologic research organization in the Commonwealth. Since that time the Survey has performed basic research in a number of geologic areas such as energy, applied geology, mineral resources, geologic mapping, and hydrogeology. Because of coal&apos;s importance to Kentucky, a significant part of the geologic data collected by the KGS is coal related. Coal-related data also occur in a variety of other KGS data sets such as the petroleum and water data files. To adequately respond to coal-related inquiries, the KGS maintains an inter- active, on-line data base in which various types of geologic and hydrologic information can be easily stored, retrieved, and manipulated. The KGS will continue to expand and update this data base through ongoing research, and by cooperating with the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet, Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, U. S. Geological Survey, and University of Kentucky Institute for Mining and Minerals Research. Data in this comprehensive system is available to State, Federal, and local governments; industry; researchers; and the general public. These data facilitate coal exploration, mine planning and permitting, coal production, and research activities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

High strength, high-conductivity copper-base alloys have found considerable use in the resistance welding and electrical industry in the form of castings, forgings, or wrought products. There are a number of parts utilized by these industries which would lend themselves to manufacture by powder metallurgical methods provided the required physical and electrical properties are obtainable with such methods. The present paper describes the results of a study of certain copper-base powder metallurgical products susceptible to precipitation hardening. Copper Powders The general types of commercially available copper powders are flake, spherical and electrolytic. Micrographs of these three types are shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. The difference in particle shape is pronounced and obvious. The type of powder used is determined, or at least indicated, by the final properties desired in the finished article. The type of powder employed during the present investigation was electrolytic powder shown in Fig. 3, and was chosen because of its particular adaptability to the work described in this Paper. The screen and chemical analyses of this powder are shown in Table I. In the preparation of compacts of high electrical conductivity, the purity of the copper powder is of importance in addition to other factors, such as density and the state of internal stresses. These variables were studied briefly by pressing a number of compacts to various pressed densities, sintering them for one hour in hydrogen at 975OC and repressing. The size of the finished compacts was 1/4, by % by 8 in. The time interval from the application to the termination of pressure was approximately 20 sec. Some of the compacts were annealed before testing. The results are listed in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive. In Fig. 4 the curves of pressed density vs. compacting pressure, and sintered density versus compacting pressure show the typical direct relationship of pressure and density. Compacting pressures exceeding about 30 tons per sq. in. result fiequently in expansion during sintering for the type of powder used. Fig. 5 indicates that variations in the initial pressed density within the range of about 5 to 6 grams per c, c., affect only slightly the pressure required to obtain a

In the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mat-tawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by lnspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica.
