Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. The large list of foreign members-1746 in number-few of whom ever have opportunity to attend meetings and all of whom derive their main benefits from membership through the pub-

During the last quarter of 1948, two new machines, which may revolutionize the coal mining industry, made their first public appearance within two months of each other. Both are designed to mine and load coal continuously. On Oct. 27, the "Colmol," invented by C. H. Snyder and A. E. Lamm, president and executive vice-president, respectively, of the Sunnyhill Coal Co., was demonstrated at the No. 8 mine of that Company at New Lexington, Ohio. The "Joy Continuous Miner," invented by H. F. Silver, president of the Silver Engineering Works, Denver, and developed and manufactured by the Joy Manufacturing Co., was demonstrated at the Mathies mine, near Finleyville, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coal seam.

ACCURATE ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fine¬ness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by mis-use, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to he actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

Barium can be purified by equilibration with titanium. The melting point of barium was found to be 726.2° i 0.5 °C. The room-temperature lattice parameters of BaTe and Bask are 7.004 * 0.002A and 6.600 * 0.002A. Melting points for BaTe and Base were found to be 1510° * 30°C and 1830° ± 50°C, respectively. HIGH-purity barium and its compounds are difficult to prepare because of the reactivity of barium with the atmosphere and the large heats of formation of the compounds. Purification of barium by vacuum distillation,' and the preparation and properties of barium oxide2 and barium sulfide3 have been reported. However, little has been done on the homologous compounds barium selenide and telluride. PURIFICATION OF BARIUM Distilled barium obtained from King Laboratories was used as the starting material. The analysis supplied with the metal showed the presence of: 0.4 wt pct Sr, 0.001 pct Mg, 0.02 pct F, 0.003 pct Cu, 0.005 pct Na and less than 5 x 10-3 wt pct of any other metallic impurity. Analyses for oxygen and nitrogen were not available. Since there is evidence4 that any barium nitride present in the starting material may decompose on distillation producing nitrogen which can contaminate the distillate, further purification was performed. At elevated temperatures, any nitrogen and oxygen present in barium should be removed by reaction with titanium. Assuming that the solubility of oxygen in liquid barium is negligible near the melting point of barium, any oxygen present will be in the form of BaO. Removal of oxygen from molten barium is expressed by the equation: BaO(S)+ TixOy(S) = Ba(l)+ TixO(y+1)(s) where Ti,Oy and TixO(y+1) are solid solutions of oxygen in titanium. At 1000°C, the change in free energy for this reaction is negative for (y+1)/x +y+1) x (100) 17.5 at. pct O.5 Since reaction with commercially pure titanium (containing 0.07 wt pct oxygen) results in a free energy change for the reaction of -19 kcal per g-atom, slight solubility of oxygen in barium would not hinder the oxygen removal. Since comparable thermodynamic data are not available to permit calculation of the partition of nitrogen between liquid barium and titanium, a similar quantitative relationship cannot be obtained. However, on the basis of work by Kubaschewski and Dench,5 complete removal of nitrogen from liquid barium can be expected. Since the melting point of barium is depressed markedly by small additions of nitrogen,' the change in melting point during reaction of barium with titanium was used to follow the purification reaction. MELTING POINT OF BARIUM A 50-g sample of barium was sealed by arc welding under argon into an all titanium crucible provided with a thermocouple well. The melting point of the sample was determined by thermal analysis, using a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple which was calibrated according to National Bureau of Standards specification6. The crucible was then heated for 48 hr at 950°C in vacuum and the melting point redetermined. This procedure was repeated until three successive thermal analyses agreed within ±0.5oC, the limits of error of the analysis. The melting point increased from an initial value of 720.0°C to a final value of 726.2°C. Analysis on samples quenched from 950°C gave a solubility value of 0.004 wt. pct Ti. Assuming that the titanium-barium phase diagram is similar to those of titanium-magnesium7 and titanium-calcium,8 the solubility of titanium in liquid barium decreases with decreasing temperature. Therefore, the solubility of titanium in liquid barium should be less than 0.004 wt. pctat the melting point (726oC), and the effect of dissolved titanium on the melting point would be negligible. Addition of up to 3 wt pct Sr does not significantly change the melting point of barium,7 so that the effect of the 0.4 wt pct Sr in the starting material will also be negligible. The value of 726.2" ± 0.5C obtained for the melting point of barium can be compared .with a determination carried out by Keller and coworkers in low-carbon steel crucibles,' who obtained a value of 725± 1C, using barium purified by fractional distillation. The higher value obtained in the present investigation is indicative of the effectiveness of titanium in removing traces of nitrogen. During the year 1945, the total number of wells drilled in Ohio, including the. non¬productive wells, was 1034. For the 10-year period ending with 1945, the average completions per year were 1125, the least number being 910 in 1938, and the maximum 1561 in 1941. The proportion of dry holes in 1945 was 37 per cent?about the same as for the year 1944 but exceeding the 10-year average, which was 34 per cent. The number of oil wells completed exceeded the number drilled in 1944 by about 30 per cent, the average initial per well being the same in both years. Gas-well completions were approximately 10 per Cent less than in 1944, with the average initial per well about 5 per cent greater. The difference in number of oil and gas wells in the two years was in Berea and Clinton completions, as the number of oil wells increased about 30 per cent, owing to greater activity in the two sands named, while the number of gas wells decreased because of fewer completions therein.

Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.

THE ore that is being treated by the present plant lies between the leached zone, or capping, and the mixed sulfide and oxide zone. The principal copper minerals are chalcanthite (CuSO4.5H20), brochantite (CuS04 3Cu (OH)2) and atacarnite, (CuC12.3Cu (OH)2). There are, in addition, some other minerals such as cuprite and kröhnkite (CuSO4. Na2SO4.2H20). These minerals, with many others, occur in a greatly crushed granodiorite rock. Most of the copper-bearing minerals occur in the cracks and veinlets, but there are disseminated values and it is probably the relative proportion of these that accounts for some otherwise unexplainable variations in extraction. The entire mineralization of the ore is complex and varies with depth. This variation, the problems presented thereby, and the effect of various constituents of the ore will be taken up in detail. An analysis of an unweighted composite of the ore treated during 1927 follows:

IN SEVERAL papers and addresses during the past two years, I have dwelled upon some of the economic consequences of the war. The fundamental thought that I have sought to convey is that the world became immensely poorer by the war, not only in material wealth and population, but also in the psychology and morale of the people. I do not see how there can be any intelligent dissent from that statement. All the ideas of post-war prosperity were manifestly fallacious, manifestly fallacious from the outset. If there had been any truth in them it would have followed logically that a great war, with all its destruction of wealth, health and life would be a good thing. Therefore, let us have a great war every ten years or so. Such an idea would be both monstrous and absurd. Assuming then the acceptance of my premise, I have tried to show that the losses by the war could be made good in a short time, i.e., in a relatively short time, only by doing things a great deal better than formerly, and that the accomplishment of such a result called for greater transparency in industry, for industrial cooperation, for thinking in terms of industries as a whole, and for the greater exercise of engineering functions. All of this introduced, of course, the position and psychology of labor. I say frankly that I do not look for labor to contribute any constructive thought to the upbuilding. I neither expect it nor hope for it. This is a pity, for it could do so much for its own economic advancement if it would. However, it never has done so, but rather has benefited only from the exercise of the talents of the few, and the main hope now is to bring it into a passive state, dispelling the resistive fallacies that developed during the war. Let us briefly examine the nature of these.

Based on pole figure data and microstructural observations, the re-crystallization orientation found in a copper strip previously cold-rolled 99.5 pct from a single crystal with an initial (110) [112] orientation may be described as: a 30° rotation, clockwise and counterclockwise, about octahedral poles of the cold-rolled texture such that all four poles function at a low annealing temperature (400°C) and only three of them function at high temperatures (500' to 1050°C). The relative intensity of deformation stresses on various slip planes can be correlated with the choice of poles affecting the rotations found in the recrystallized orientations. ROTATIONAL reorientation about the poles of densely packed crystallographic planes is an important characteristic of secondary recrystallization" in face-centered cubic metals. Some evidence has also been interpreted to show that such a rotational relationship also exists in the primary recrys-tallization process." In an investigation of the crystallographic relationships in the recrystallization process, several aspects of the experimental procedure should be considered. With cold-rolled poly-crystalline metal as the initial material, pole figure analysis leaves many ambiguities as to whether or not simple indices can be assigned to adequately represent its orientation. The rolling texture does not consist of a single texture. Minor deformation textures are usually present. In all cases, twin textures are present. The presence of both minor and twin deformation textures influences the recrystallization texture. In order to study the recrystallization mechanism, a more precise knowledge of the history of the material before recrystallization is necessary. Tensile deformation of a single crystal usually produces residual stresses which are concentrated at slip bands. Since the exact nature and orientation of these potential nuclei sites cannot be experimentally evaluated, the tensile deformation of a single crystal was not considered adequate. From the work done by Barrett and Steadman6 n copper, it appeared that cold rolling of a single-crystal specimen with an initial (110) [112] orientation would yield a specimen which fulfills the conditions required for the present investigation, namely a highly preferred single rolling texture with relatively homogeneous stress distribution. By investigating the recrystallization texture of this material, additional details of reorientation during recrystallization might be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to describe such an investigation. Experimental Procedure Copper used in the present investigation was cathode sheet with a purity of 99.94 to 99.97 pct. A copper single-crystal specimen, 1.15x0.8720x0.5322 in. (thickness) was cut from a cylindrical crystal which was grown in a Bridgman furnace.' The cutting was accomplished on a horizontal milling machine operated at a very slow speed to obtain a (110) plane in the rolling plane and a [112] direction in the rolling direction. The disturbed surface was removed by electrolytic polishing in dilute orthophos-phoric acid (H3PO4) with a specific gravity of 1.14, and a current density of about 1 to 2 amp per sq cm. A 3-min polishing was needed to eliminate the disturbed surface causing Debye-Scherrer rings and a 45-min polish produced a surface which yielded sharp rounded Laue spots. It was estimated that about 1/16 in. of metal was removed from the original cut surface. The final orientation of this specimen before rolling was about 2" from the (110) plane in the rolling plane with a [112] direction aligned in the rolling direction. It is possible that a small amount of strain was still present in the cube despite the fact that the Laue spots seemed very sharp. It is doubtful, however, that this would be an important factor after a subsequent rolling reduction of 99.5 pct. This copper specimen was rolled on a laboratory rolling mill with two highly polished rolls 37/8 in. in diam in the following manner: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction, 0.005 in. to 70 pct, 0.002 in. to 85 pct and, finally, 0.001 in. per pass to a 99.5 pct reduction. Resistance was measured as a function of temperature, 77° to 350°K,for niobium with hydrogen concentrations up to 3.76 at. pct. Cooling curves exhibited a discontinuity in slope that was attributed to the initiation of hydride formation. A thermal hysteresis was explained in terms of diffusion and the effects of mechanical constraint on nucleation and growth. The heat of solution of hydrogen in saturated Nb-H solid solution was 2. 737 * 0.045 kcal per g-atom, including an unknown stress contribution. The critical ternperatures for hydride formation during cooling and for embrittlement are correlated but not coincident. This, too, has been explained in terms of mechanical constraint and stress-itlduced tratzsfomtation. Nb-H alloys undergo a ductile-brittle transition with decreasing temperature.'-3 Similar behavior has been noted for v-H.1,5 For the latter system, there is evi-dence6 suggesting coincidence of the temperature of minimum ductility and the critical temperature T, for initiation of metal hydride precipitation during cooling. A decrease in ductility due to the presence of brittle hydride particles is readily explainable. The fact that ductility begins to decrease at some temperature higher than T,4,5 has led us6 to suggest that precipitation may be strain-induced locally during tensile testing. Wood and Daniels' have reported that a plot of temperatures for 10 pct reduction in ductility vs hydrogen concentration in niobium is not coincident with, but parallels, the solvus.7,8 They believe this indicates a correlation of precipitation and embrittlement. Unfortunately, the two reported solvuses 7,8 to which Wood and Daniels refer are not in agreement with each other. Furthermore, neither solvus was determined experimentally: each was a plot of calculated solubilities. Thus. neither is highly dependable for determining whether embrittlement coincides with initiation of hydride precipitation. Longson 9 studied phase relations in the Nb-H system between 77° and 473°K by dilatometry. Comparison with metallographic observations convinced him that discontinuities in the slopes of his dilatometric plots were coincident with the initiation of hydride precipitation. Plotting the logarithm of the hydrogen concentration vs the reciprocal of the temperature at which precipitation was initiated during cooling, he obtained a straight line shown in Fig. 1. Walter and chandler,'' using X-ray techniques to detect the for mation of a second phase? have obtained three experimental points in the temperature range 295° to 338°K which fall within Longson's experimental error for this plot. A similar plotg of temperatures at which dissolution was completed during heating was a parallel line shifted toward higher temperatures. A straight-line plot was obtained, also, for the temperatures of the ductile-brittle transitions,9 but it was shifted toward still higher temperatures. Longson calculated an activation energy of 2.980 * 0.300 kcal per mole for the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism, compared with 3.180 * 0.400 kcal per mole for hydride formation. Despite this agreement, he concluded, "It seems unlikely that embrittlement results from hydride formation..." because hydrogen embrittlement was observed at temperatures above the solvus. It is our contention that embrittlement is correlated with precipitation of the hydride.6 Because only Longson has investigated Nb-H phase relations at sub-ambient temperatures, we deemed it advisable to re-determine the temperature dependence of the solubility using the resistometric technique already proven successful for the V-H system.6 Coincidence of our solvus with temperatures for embrittlement would

Myriad problems face all of us in the next decade. Vietnam, poverty, and pollution are perhaps the most pres- sing. A lesser one but still vital to us as a Nation is the slow hut apparently relentless extinction of the mining, metallurgical. geological and petroleum engineer. Are we doomed to take our place in the crossword puzzle with the moa. to be defined like it as an "extinct bird"? Or can we reverse the trend perhaps, in the next decade? The plain fact is we are an endangered species, and must resign ourselves to virtual extinction in the 1970's unless the trend is reversed. Probably, many of us have felt the problem will solve itself if left in the in-basket long enough, believing, that the trend will reverse solely on the basis of demand for these disciplines. This approach has not worked up to now, it gives no promise of working in the future, and furthermore, the problem has been in the in-basket much too long. The point is simply this: What can each of us do as an individual, or as part of a company, a State agency, a Federal agency, a university, or an organization such as AIME?

THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. The more southerly of the twin stocks appears to be comparatively inert and without obvious relation to mineralization. which

Early in 1965 the Surface Combustion Division of the Midland-Ross Corporation was awarded the contract to engineer and construct a taconite pelletizing plant for the National Steel pellet plant, administered by the Hanna Mining Co., near Keewatin, Minn. This plant, which will have an annual capacity of 2,400,000 long tons, will produce pellets from magnetite concentrate using a new process developed through a joint research program by Midland-Ross, Hanna Mining, and the National Steel Corp. The work that culminated in the decision to construct this plant is the result of a research program for the development of the Midland-Ross heat fast process for the production of prereduced or metallized pellets. PELLETIZING PROCESS There are many acceptable methods for producing oxide pellets from ground iron ores and concentrates, and all of these give an acceptable product for blast furnace utilization. The vertical shaft furnace, the traveling grate, and the grate-kiln have been installed in many pelletizing plants in the northern hemisphere; therefore, the acceptance of these methods and the problems associated with them are well understood. However, this research project investigated a method for improving upon these processes to produce a high quality oxide pellet at a low operating cost.

WHEN an Fe-C alloy, partially reacted to pearl-ite, is quenched rapidly enough to suddenly stop the growth process, it may be expected that any carbon concentration gradients will freeze in situ in the newly formed martensite. A short tempering treatment should precipitate finely dispersed iron carbide particles in approximately the same distribution in which carbon existed during the growth process. Examination with the electron microscope of areas of tempered martensite adjacent to the pearlite-martensite interface should reveal the existence of preferred areas of precipitation. Fig. 1 is an example of an electron micrograph used in this study. Small sections of a commercial steel (0.9 pct C, 1.6 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si) were austenitized at 945°C in air for 45 min, furnace-cooled to 697°C, iso-thermally reacted to pearlite for 30 min, and quenched into iced brine. Two samples were tempered 5 and 20 min, respectively, in air at 498°C and were subsequently quenched in water. The samples were mechanically polished and etched in 1 pct picral. Collodion replicas were made by the conventional technique; these were shadowed with chromium at about 650' from the horizontal, and electron micrographs were taken at a linear magnification of 14,200X. Prints were made at a magnification of 44,100X. Lineal analysis of the prints was made as a function of the interlamellar spacing and volume percent of iron carbide. Straight lines were drawn into tempered martensite between adjacent lamellae at a distance S/4 or S/6 apart, where S is defined as the interlamellar spacing measured at the pearlite-martensite interface. The volume percent of iron carbide was measured along each of these traces with a "gage length" of S/10. The results of analyses of two samples are shown in Table I. The area included between the S/2 and S distance from the interface could be considered homogeneous within the sensitivity of the measuring technique. This value was used as a proportionality factor to evaluate an arbitrary carbon content of homogeneous austenite, and also as a parameter by which error in measurements could be evaluated. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Rothwell's condemnation of my paper on the International Correspondence Schools as not giving an impartial view of the whole field of such enterprises, because it was confined to the description of a single one, might be legitimate if I had undertaken or professed to do anything else than that which I was requested by the Secretary of the Institute to do—namely, to give an account of this particular institution. This is a sufficient answer to all his direct or implied criticisms upon my omission to mention either persons or organizations outside of the special limits set for me. Recognizing fully that personalities have no place whatever in the Transactions, I regret the necessity of making the following statement in answer to Mr. Rothwell's charge that I omitted to give due credit to Mr. Ewald, a former principal of the International Correspondence Schools. The Colliery Engineer School of Mines was started in 1891, and its first student was enrolled October 16, 1891. During the fall of the same year the mine-mechanical course was laid out along the same general line that had already been followed in the mining course. This mine-mechanical course was the foundation from which sprung the later developments of the several mechanical courses. In this context "plug flow" is defined as all material passing through the mill in the same length of time, the residence time t. In addition it has been shown that the assumption of Eq. 1 also leads to simple analytical solutions for closed-circuit, steady-state grinding with an ideal classifier at the mill exit returning oversize to the mill feed. The solutions are also given in Table 2, with µ as the ideal classifier cut size, C the circulation ratio, and Q (x) the size distribution of the circuit product. The specific surface area of these size distributions is where the density-shape factor k. is assumed to be constant with size. In practice, most methods of size analysis or area [ ] measurement have a finite lower limit, so that the integration is really performed from xm, to xm, For a realistic degree of grinding the value of So is dominated by the fine sizes because of the 1/x factor. During the first ten months," crude oil prices were stable, except for a slight increase early in the year. Toward the end of the year, uncertainty of price structure be-came evident and a sharp reduction in allowable production was under way. Exploration for new pools and development of .pools already discovered continued active throughout the year. Production control agencies in Texas, and to a less extent in New Mexico and Louisiana, appear to have had increasing difficulty in holding crude oil output to allowable limits. The situation elsewhere is less well known but probably the same condition exists in other important producing States whether control is by State commissions or by unofficial bodies.
