A new method of manufacturing the wavy-tilt-dam(WTD) mechanical seal has been mentioned. In this method, the special equipment is designed to provide a predetermined force to external and inner circular surface of the ring. After milling the end face of the seal by grinding miller and releasing the preload, the wavy-tilt-dam can be done on the seal surface. In this paper, a prediction model is built up to investigate the relationship between the predetermined force and the deformation on the surface of the ring by using ANSYS software. A WTD ring is manufactured by this method which approves that the prediction model is in accord with the real process and this manufacturing method of the WTD mechanical seal is a proper choice.

The efficiency of an apparatus which uses a forced lubrication system, as well as the useful life of its components, is strongly related to the degree of contamination of lubricating oil. The presence of contaminants and the degradation of the oil itself cause it to release substances that fouling of the wall of the pipes. The cleaning and dialysis of the oil pipes, besides prolonging the life of the lubricant reduces wear of the components. There are several methods of cleaning in pipes, the problem is that some have abrasive characteristics, which could damage some types pipes. Among the non-abrasive methods stand the Flushing and Air scouring. Flushing uses the lubricating oil which circulates in temperatures alternating and high speeds, for generating turbulence to perform washing. The Air scouring method uses oil and filtered compressed air, injected into pipe, to generating higher flow, causing the power supply unit with fluid can work with lower power consumption and higher speeds, removing fouling of the pipe. The objective of this research is to evaluate the Reynolds number to correlate with the efficiency of cleaning the pipe. The method applied was the Air scouring and it was verified that the qualitative effects may occur when compared to Flushing. After testing, it was found that the chosen method brings significant changes in flow, and this flow regime varies considerably increasing the Reynolds number.

The environmental management of steel mill slag should be understood as a management philosophy, observing technical, economic and environmental criteria associated with their generation, storage and final destination. The slag can be considered as a synthetic mineral resource and become a very useful co-product in different areas. The Argentinean steel industry prioritizes the efficient environmental management of its waste, thus contributing to its own survival taking into account the sustainable development. In the world, the slag produced by the steel industry has been used as steel aggregate for road bases, railway ballast and filling material among others. Any factor that influences the economy of the country affects all branches of society, mainly public agencies, whose financial resources are increasingly scarce to deal with all public works. It is necessary to join efforts of private and public initiative in the adoption of alternative materials that replace the use of finite natural resources. This presentation aims to show the work done by private companies together with public bodies and universities to obtain a regulatory document for the management of slag as steel aggregates for three different uses, namely: road use, railway use and general use.

The next generation of the well-established 3-roll Reducing & Sizing Block (RSB), the RSB SCS® is the latest milestone in reducing and sizing technology for SBQ products. A newly developed modular drive concept of the RSB SCS® grants a smaller footprint in the layout, a reduced oil-lubrication volume and a simplified maintenance schedule. Intelligent engineering leads furthermore to reduced hydraulic functions of the RSB SCS®, which ensures a safe and environmentally friendly rolling. Another integral part of the RSB SCS® is an innovative stand changing concept, which allows automatic stand changing within three minutes. The new RSB SCS® also includes a Fast Remote Control (FRC) which enables the immediate adjustment of the roll gap against the rolling force (under load) within milliseconds. Size changes along the free-size range can also be made within the traditional billet gaps in less than five seconds. At the core of the future-oriented RSB SCS® is a real-time closed-loop control system called Size Control System (SCS®) acting with 3-roll stands adjustable under load (AUL) and / or the heavy duty stands. These features remarkably further improve the rolled tolerances and their reproducibility, and at the same time simplify the operation by means of an automated optimization of the process parameters for the rolled bars.

Siemens VAI has made an important Research & Development effort since 10 years on laser welder field. The last step of this program was in 2010, the evolution of its laser welder range by implementing the solid state technology with laser cutting and welding. Since this step, 8 welders were produced by Siemens VAI. Now after more than 1 year of industrial feedback, the results are showing a high level of performances on very demanding processing lines for a large range of products from Silicon steel to High Strength Steel with DP and TRIP grades. This laser welder concept using laser cutting and welding through solid state laser source is also proposed by Siemens VAI for pickling lines and tandem mills with significant advantages compared to standard solution.

After use has been reduced the number of times of tip exchange in more than 04 times. Was reduced too, the time to remove lance skulls. The development of the blast furnace over the last years lead to a substantial increase in production capacity and productivity. This development triggered an evolution of the cooling systems in order to cope with the raising heat loads. The excellent protection of the shell by copper staves allowed blast furnace operators to achieve campaign lifetimes of more than 20 years. However in recent years some blast furnaces have experienced severe wear of the copper staves due to abrasion. The influences of the blast furnace design as well as of the operation conditions on this premature wear have been analysed and the mechanisms leading to the wear will be explained. New developments in the copper stave technology are part of the solution for avoiding premature wear during periods with less favourable conditions. The protection mechanisms made available by the new design extend the inherent protection mechanisms of copper staves to these periods. BFXpert® system is the ideal tool for the monitoring of the process data, the process models and the recommendations given by Sachem® support the operator in choosing efficient operation points. The charging with a Bell Less Top® (BLT) allows an accurate controlling of the blast furnace with regard to the optimization of the gas distribution. High performance operation together with long campaign lifetimes are thus made possible.

Lubricant oils are subjected to reciprocating movement in the piston ring/cylinder tribocouple of automotive engines. In this kind of movement, the relative speed oscillates between zero and a maximum, and therefore the lubrication regime goes from boundary to hydrodynamic. Tribotests are widely used in laboratories to hint at the friction developed in these systems. In the present work, a SRV tribometer was used to evaluate the friction behaviour of lubricant oils under reciprocating movement up to 60 Hz. A high acquisition rate allowed the analysis of data inside each reciprocating cycle. Both a pure base oil and a fully formulated lubricant were used. Changes in the contact pressure, viscosity and speed were seen to influence friction, which was correlated to the relative thickness predicted by Hamrock-Dowson equation. While some observed characteristics were typical consequences of the Stribeck curve, other effects were also observed, such as the occurrence of seizure at high reciprocating frequency. A lower boundary coefficient of friction due to additive package in the formulated oil was also observed. The results allow a better understanding of friction in reciprocating cycles and can be used to evaluate the performance of oils and surfaces in laboratory prior to engine testing.

Samarco produces high quality iron ore pellets processed in straight grate furnaces. This process is essential in order to obtain adequate mechanical strength to the pellet transportation and operation in the reduction reactors. All mechanical properties of the agglomerates are obtained during the stage of firing where the slag and sintering bond happens, thus it is a decisive step to improve the pellet quality. Therefore, the velocity distribution of gas flow within this zone must have homogeneous and even velocity distribution. Hence, it was developed a mathematical CFD model to characterize the gas flow in the burning zone, applying the equations of conservation of momentum, mass and energy and an uneven flow distribution was identified and the gas velocity analyzed and validated through experimental data. On the other hand, on the present paper, an improved firing zone burner were developed and industrially implemented in a way to mitigate the uneven flow pattern detected aided by CFD. Different burner designs, based on CFD analysis, were experimented in order to succeed on the aggressive condition. The combustion was investigated and burner efficiency evaluated and compared with the simulation purposed.

This paper describes the study of the work-roll during the hot rolling process thanks to a 3D model built with the Finite Element Method (FEM). In terms of computational cost, that method needs high resources compared to 1D model which are mostly used. However, the 3D model is built to have a better understanding of the work-roll thermal and mechanical behavior during the hot rolling process. The thermal model shows that the highest temperature reached during rolling are within the range of 500°C and 600°C. The thermal field input used to simulate the mechanical behavior of the work-roll shows a biaxial thermal stress state, in the circumferential and axial planes. However, a peak of radial stress is observed in the backup zone. It did not generate plastic strain but could influence the fatigue behavior of the work-roll.

This paper presents a new instrument for real-time detection of excessively coarse material in the overflow pipes of individual hydrocyclones using a non-invasive acoustic measurement technique. The hydrocyclone is an important device used in mineral processing beneficiation circuits for classification of mineral slurries by particle size. It separates a single input stream into two output streams; an underflow of coarse particles that undergo additional grinding for further size reduction, and an overflow stream of finer particles that typically goes directly into a flotation circuit for recovery of the desired mineral. However the hydrocyclone is a major piece of equipment in the beneficiation process that has no instrumentation for directly measuring its performance. The parameters currently measured – inlet pressure, feed flow rate, feed flow density – are common to the entire hydrocyclone cluster which typically has three to twelve hydrocyclones. Thus no information is available to detect individual hydrocyclones that are operating poorly. The system described in this paper detects the presence of unwanted excessively coarse material in the overflow stream of a hydrocyclone using sensors mounted to the exterior pipe surface. It provides real-time monitoring, trending and alarming of the coarse material level. This enables operators to identify poorly performing hydrocyclones, and enables corrective action to reduce or eliminate the coarse material discharge. Improving the classification efficiency of individual hydrocyclones will improve the overall classification efficiency of a hydrocyclone cluster. This leads to less variation in the particle size distribution and slurry density in the flotation feed, which will in turn improve overall mineral recovery. The reduction of unwanted coarse material in the flotation feed reduces the accumulation of that material in flotation cells. This can lead to equipment damage, and unplanned shutdowns due to events such as blocked dart valves.

Spraying Systems Co® has continued to develop and evolve descale nozzles through the years. The most recent addition to the descale nozzle line, the DescaleJet® Pro, provides more impact and a more uniform distribution than previous descale nozzles. The improved performance has been achieved through multiple design changes such as a smoother approach, updated vane design and improved carbide orifice. In addition to providing improved spray performance the nozzle also lasts longer than previous versions. The new technology has been thoroughly tested in the lab using impact measurements and accelerated wear testing. In addition to lab testing the nozzle has provided improved performance and longer wear life for those that have made the change to the new technology. The new nozzle technology and the benefits to the rolling mill will be discussed.

State-of-the-art automation technology enables digitalization of the continuous casting process that goes far beyond conventional automation of industrial production. Primetals Technologies provides a digital twin that combines an intelligent digital representation of a casting machine as well as the casting process and the slabs, blooms or billets that are produced. It allows metallurgists and process engineers to predict the behavior of the involved complex production process and optimize parameters before using them in real production. New steel grades or production processes can be evaluated off-line without any risks to process stability and product quality. Primetals Technologies installs the digital twin with every new installation of a continuous caster optimization system. This paper describes how the setup and simulation possibilities of the digital twin provide numerous benefits by modelling and simulating the casting process. It allows for example the calculation of material properties according to the actual composition, strand surface temperature profiles and dynamic soft reduction before the final point of solidification. An outstanding feature of the digital twin is the replay functionality provided for various models to analyze and further optimize real production situations. The paper also gives an example how usage of the digital twin optimized production at a customer.

A competitive landscape pressurizes the steel producers business, zero defect requirements from customers forces the operators for additional efforts in process control and quality management. The so called quality related cost, which include also rework, cost for downgrading or even scabbing of material is already a remarkable lever in a plants profitability breakdown. The introduction of advanced state of the art grades in the product portfolio requires already a budgeting for the expenses for R&D and quality management. PQA has been developed as a process and quality management software solution next to existing level 2 or level 3 automation systems. It is focusing on the analysis of process data, equipment information, in line quality measurement devices and trend analysis to obtain an answer whether the process is according to definition and expectation and whether the intermediate or final product can be shipped for further processing as prime material. Advanced analytics which are linked to an expert know how based configuration identifies deficiencies in the production and processing process. An intelligent, state of the art quality rating system evaluates tolerable deviations. PQA comprises the software platform including the database, data configurator and collector from the different sources in the production process and units. The core element of the platform is the knowledge based expert know how package defining process and quality determining fundamentals. The paper describes the structure of the software package, it gives insights on the expert know how package, process and quality evaluation and points out the customer benefits, cost reduction, improvement yield, customer satisfaction increase. With the aim to reduce the hot metal production cost, ArcelorMittal Gent decided to integrate more ores with finer particle size distribution in the raw material mix for the production of blast furnace sinter. As a consequence of such an increase of finer material in the sinter raw mix, the sinter machine productivity and the quality of the sinter are affected. In order to compensate this impact, modern granulation technology can be employed. Within this context, ArcelorMittal Gent has invested in a vertical intensive mixer. The equipment was placed before the existing drums, with a function of “mixer”, whereas the drums are fully optimised for the nodulizing process. The paper presents the results of the industrial operation during the commissioning phase of the new equipment. Gradually increasing the proportion of fine material in the sinter raw mix has made it possible to compare the performances of the old system using drums for mixing and pelletizing with the new system using an intensive mixer combined with a nodulizing.

ArcelorMittal's pickling and cold rolling line has been demanded to increase production since the installation of equipments in 2015. In addition to the improvement in productivity related to these new equipment, one of them the automatic surface inspection system (SIAS), work has also been developed in other equipment seeking improvement of production indicators. The present article exposes the actions and gains that were achieved with actions on two equipments in the same section as the Side Trimmer. The first one deals with the optimization of time gains with sequencing adjustments without financial contribution, using only internal labor seeking reduction of unproductive times by adjustments of the side trimmer in the cold strip mill. The second item discussed demonstrates the actions and the gains generated due to the availability of new resources (installation of SIAS equipment), the optimization of these resources seeking a focus on the reduction of ruptures in the tandem cold mill, configuring the same in the aid of the identification of critical defects and also in the automatic speed reduction action of the tandem cold mill in defects considered serious. In both cases the intention was to improve production, seeking to improve the results of the section and the line.

At voestalpine Stahl, Linz a new conventional slab caster has been installed to produce mainly automotive and electrical applications grades, implementing the latest design solutions: tight pitch roll geometry, mould and strand stirring and braking devices, SEN water modelling validation, enhanced roll cooling design to allow dry casting conditions, finely defined slab cooling system layout to control slab surface temperature across the width. To control these design solutions the latest generation of technological packages has been implemented like detailed solidification model based on meshless computational algorithm and a fully dynamic application of soft reduction to achieve sound internal quality results.
