Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 mil-million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests.

E. Lee, head of the research staff. INTRODUCTION The past reputation of zinc as an ingredient in lead blast furnace slags has been bad. Zinc is thought of as a cause of accretions in the shaft of the blast furnace, of hot tops, of the formation of "zinc mush" in the crucible and forehearth, of lead-rich slags, of viscous slags, and. of low capacity in smelting.

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

During the 5-year period 1906-10 inclusive, 84 major disasters (a major disaster being one in which 5 or more lives are lost) occurred in the coal mines of the United States, or an average of 17 per year, and the total number of fatalities from coal-mine gas and dust explosions (major plus minor) for the 5 years aggregated 2,338 or 477.6 per year. The monotonous continuance of coal-mine disasters month by month aroused the people of the United States to such an extent that it was felt necessary for the Federal Government to try to do something looking to the avoidance of the admittedly excessive loss of life in our coal mines, and this was one of the deciding factors in the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mires in 1910. That results have been obtained in this particular cause of coal-mine accidents may be seen from the fact that for the year 1933 but one major explosion disaster occurred in the coal mines of then united States and the total number killed in that disaster was 7. Unquestionably the coal-mining industry through use of oaf or mining practices and aided by the various kinds of work of the Bureau of Mines looking to the prevention of mine fires and explosions is in large part responsible for this very creditable change. If the gas and dust explosion fatality rate of 1.059 per million tons of coal produced during the period 1906-10 inclusive had continued to the first of January 1934, instead of the 6,373 deaths which actually occurred due to gas and dust explosions, there would have been 13,480. Hence, during the 23 years existence of the Bureau of Mines there has apparently been a saving of about 7,102 probable deaths, or an average of more than 300 per year, from gas and dust explosions as against the number which would have occurred had the 1.059 gas and dust explosion fatality rate for the period 1906-10 continued. Thirty-nine persons were killed in all kinds of explosions (both major and minor) in the coal mines of the United States in 1933; if the 1.059 gas and dust fatality rate of the 1900-10 period had been in effect in 1933, about 400 persons world have been killed. Unquestionably, the various teachings of the U.S. Bureau of Mines looking to the avoidance of explosions and fires in mines have had a vital influence in reducing the number of explosions and fires and also in decreasing their destruction in case they occur.

Early in my term of office it was announced that my Presidential Address would make particular reference to the subject of Mine Taxation in Canada. With this purpose in view there was drafted a Balance Sheet and Earnings' Statement of a Gold Mining Company. This in turn was submitted to the Dominion Income Tax Authorities in Ottawa and to the Minister of. Mines of each of the several Provinces of Canada. The response to the invitation was not as complete as we had hoped it would be, but the figures that were obtained will be presented during the present meeting, and they constitute, I hope, a sufficient basis for extended study and additional enquiry during the year to come ( 1) . In the form letter that accompanied our request to have the submitted earnings assessed, I made the following assertion: "In this work we have three objects in mind. 1.--We will get direct comparison between the different Provinces in Canada. 2.-We will in this way educate our members concerning taxation as it affects the mining industry. 3.-We will publish the details as to how the assessment is calculated by each body, so that a Mine Manager in the most remote district will have a ready reference to guide him in his annual return to the taxing bodies. As things stand, there is no intention of making this a basis for a critical attack on the present rates assessed. It is intended as an authoritative summary of actual conditions as they presently exist".

INTRODUCTION This paper is the thirteenth of the series on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, and the third of the series on Handling Zinciferous Charges. Tyro other papers have been written on the Rate of Descent of the Stock Column, and Formation of Accretions. These are Reports of Investigations 2963 and 3094, for the Tooele plant and the Bunker Hill plant, respectively.

This Information Circular is an abstract of a manuscript which was completed in June 1933, by Mr. Hugh M. Wolflin, formerly of the U. S. Bur eau of Mines. This abstract has been prepared by Charles Will Wright for presentation at the February meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in New York. It has been necessary to omit many of the details and most of the cost data and tables, as well as the illustrations in the original manuscript. As the use of airplanes in mining developments is making such progress and as a publication on this subject to be of greatest value should include the most recent information, it is unfortunate that, due to a lack of printing funds, it has not been possible to publish this manuscript. The purposes of Mr. Wolflin's paper are: (1) To describe briefly what has been accomplished in some outstanding examples by the use of aircraft in the mining and petroleum industries, (2) To record costs, (3) To present available information and suggestions to assist in solving future air-transportation problems in the industries under consideration.

As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. The district selected for examination was that of St. Helens, on the East Coast of Tasmania, which district had behind it a long record of successful tin mining operations.PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS OF SIAMESE TIN SYNDICATE LTD. HELENS.First of all the district was examined, and there was no lack of evidence to show that tin existed, although it was impossible to get down to quantities and values without an extensive prospecting campaign. In addition to agricultural and building lime the sales statistics compiled annually by the Bureau of Mines include lime sold to the steel and other metallurgical industries as refractory and fluxing material, as well as that used by paper mills, glass works, tanneries, and water-treatment plants. These major uses normally consume about 86 percent of the domestic sales. The remaining 14 percent includes lime sold for use in the manufacture of alcohol, alkalies, bleaches, calcium acetate, calcium carbide, coke gas and byproducts, glue, insecticides, oils and fats, paints, and rubber, in the refining of salt, in the manufacture of sand-lime and slag brick, in the disposal of sewage and garbage, in the manufacture of silica brick, in the refining of sugar, in the textile industries, and in wood distillation. Many other uses are also known for which complete sales data are not available.

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah,4 and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co.5 at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.

This circular is an abstract of a manuscript-completed in August 1932, which cannot be published in its entirety due to lack of printing funds. It was originally planned to publish the manuscript as one of a series of bulletins dealing with the mining and milling of ores of the principal metals. Because of the common association of lead and zinc minerals in many ore deposits, and because a considerable proportion of the zinc produced in this country is obtained as a by-product of lead mining or vice versa, it seemed necessary to treat the mining and milling of lead and zinc ores in the same volume.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

The upper part of the Alabama deposits of crystalline graphite consists of an oxidized ore derived from, the underlying unoxidized ore through prolonged weathering. The degree of oxidation in different sections and at different depths within the bed is nut. uniform. The original ore is hard and blue-gray; the weathered product is soft and brown and is the only part that has been mined to any extent. Samples of both oxidized and unoxidized ores were obtained from two of the large graphite deposits of Clay County. Three additional samples of oxidized ore were obtained from different portions of a third property in the same region. In this report, ores 1 to 5 are of oxidized material and ores 6 and 7 of unoxidized.

In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced With the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production nest be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case.

This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. An attempt has been mace in this publication to present annotated references to all articles pertaining, to ore dressing that were published during 1931 and 1932; in a few instances reference is made to articles published prior to 1931 where the articles have not been included in previous bibliography appended to the annual statistical discussions of ore concentration published by the Bureau of Mines. Articles have been taken from more than 75 periodicals, journals, serials, etc., and 423 articles are abstracted herewith. A number of these abstracts, particularly those appearing in foreign publications, have been taken from Chemical Abstracts (published by the American Chemical Society, Easton, Pa.), the general use of which the authors wish to acknowledge. Other annotations were taken directly from the original publications. The entire field of ore dressing has been included in the bibliography and articles dealing with crushing, grinding classification, concentration, thickening, and filtration have been included, as well as on amalgamation, cyanidation, leaching, magnetic concentration, washing, etc., and on theory and laboratory operation. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. Lack of printing funds prohibited the inclusion of a subject index.

The second papers deals with hydraulicking, sluice boxes and riffles, recovery of gold and platinum from placer concentrates, treatment of amalgam, and marketing of placer gold. The discussion of sluice boxes and subsequent subjects in the second paper applies to all forms of placer mining. The present paper treats of dredging and other forms of mechanical handling of placer gravels, and drift mining.

Placer mining is the mining and treatment of alluvial deposits for the recovery, of their valuable minerals. The method has been used principally for mining gold, but a large proportion of the world's production of tin, platinum, and diamonds and other gem stones and minor quantities of other heavy minerals have been won in this manner. In the United States, as in the world at large, gold has been the principal mineral obtained by placer mining. Minor quantities of metals of the platinum group are recovered with the gold in some localities. Important quantities of sapphires have been produced at placer mines in Montana, and tungsten minerals have been obtained on a commercial scale from placer deposits in California and Colorado. Other heavy minerals or gem stones, however, have not been mined to any important extent by this method in the United States. The search for placer gold and the working of the deposits when found have had much to do with the early development of the West. Placer mining has been gradually overtaken and surpassed in importance by lode-gold mining, until in 1932 less than a quarter of the country's total gold production was from placers or about an eighth, excluding Alaska. In 1932 about 76 percent of the placer gold produced in the United States was recovered by dredging. Although other forms of placer mining still are important, they have been declining for many years, as the richest and most readily mined deposits of gravel along the stream courses have been exhausted. During 1931 and 1932 there was a revival of small-scale mining, but few new deposits were discovered.
