Cylindrical fatigue specimens of OFHC* copper were subjected to alternating torsion while under axial tension. The superimposed tension strongly influenced the fatigue life of the specimens as well as causing characteristic changes in the structure of the fissures that form and develop throughout the life of the specimen. A further effect of the superimposed tension is a continuous extension of the specimen throughout its life in a manner formally similar to creep at elevated temperatures. RECENTLY, studies of the structural changes leading to fracture of metals by fatigue have been made by a technique which reveals, in section, the lattice distortion arising from slip movements inside the metal and the disturbances built up by these slip movements at the metal surface.1'2 According to this approach, fatigue develops as follows: a) fine slip movements concentrate in bands, producing little strain-hardening and thus permitting abnormal totals of plastic strain before fracture and, therefore, abnormal amounts of lattice distortion along each slip band; b) both forward and backward slip movements occur in each band which, according to their distribution across the band, may build up surface disturbances that include sharp notches; c) these notches early in the life of a specimen penetrate the distorted slip zones and transform them into deep, fine fissures; d) the fissures on continued cycling locally saturate the metal and cause local collapse in the form of a microcrack. This Bureau of Mines paper describes the methods and practices used at the Peck quarry of the Crab Orchard Stone Co., Inc., one of the leading producers of dimension stone in the Crossville, Tenn., area. The product is marketed under the registered trademark "Crab Orchard Stone". Another large producer of stone from the Crossville district sells its product under the registered trademark of "Tenn-Quartz". Both companies, and a number of other companies and individuals who quarry and process dimension stone from the same general geological formation, are members of the Quartzite Producers Association of Tennessee. The salable product is shipped throughout the country for use as architectural building stone. In 1959, 653,008 cubic feet of stone was produced in the Crossville area and was sold for $1,414,405. Terms and descriptions used in this report are those of the quarry and building trades. The offices, pitching sheds, wire saws, railroad siding, and storage areas of the Crab Orchard Stone Co., Inc., are on a side road 0.3 mile north from a point 2.2 miles east of Crossville, Tenn., on U.S. Highway 70. The quarry is on this same side road 2.0 miles south of Highway 70. Crossville is 62 miles west of Knoxville and 65 miles northeast of Chattanooga, Tenn.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. The paper describes mining and ore recovery methods common to the Batesville manganese district, Independence County, Ark., and gives the costs of producing merchantable ore by three operators whose methods were more or less typical of those of many other local manganese producers. The operating costs reported were those of Leonard Baxter at mines on Brooks Hill for the calendar year 1958 and Arkansas Mining and Exploration Corp. at Section 16 mine and the Searcy group of mines and Miller-McGee Corp. at the Diener mine during the first 6 months of 1959. Manganese are was mined in the district as early as 1849 and almost continuously thereafter until August 1959, when termination of the Government's domestic manganese purchase program resulted in complete cessation of mining activity. During those years, production came from more than 189 mines and properties, of which only a few produced as much as 30,000 tons of merchantable ore.

The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system. Four compounds corresponding to the stoichiometric formulas Th2Zn, ThZn2, ThZn4, and Th2Zn17 were observed. The melting points of these compounds under constrained vapor conditions were found to be 1055°, 1105°, 1095°, and 1015°C respectively. Four eutectics exist in this system with the following eutectic temperatures and thorium contents in wt pct: 1040°C, 89 Th; 945°C, 79 Th; 1045°C, 55 Th; and 995°C, 35 Th. The standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds were determined from zinc vapor pressure data. ALTHOUGH the thorium-zinc system has been of technical importance in the commercial production of thorium and more recently of interest to some proposed pyrometallurgical separations processes for reactor fuels or blanket materials no detailed investigation of this system has been made in the past. Some previous work has been reviewed by Hanssen.1 The existence of four compounds, Th2Zn17, ThZn4, ThZn2, and Th2Zn has been established and their crystal structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques.2-4 Smirnov et al.,5 determined the solubility of thorium in zinc and investigated the two-phase region between Th2Zn17 and zinc. They calculated some of the thermodynamic properties for these alloys from emf measurements on the cells Th/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C and Th2Zn17(s)+ Zn (l)/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C. The possibility of reaction between the anode materials and fused thorium tetrachloride to produce a lower valent thorium salt would have to be resolved in order to evaluate the results obtained. The purpose of the present investigation is to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure and Ames Lalboratory thorium. The major impurities in the thorium in parts per million were oxygen—1250, carbon—350, iron—100, nitrogen-75, and silicon—70. The metals in the form of several small massive pieces, total weight about 30 g, were cleaned with acid, washed with water and acetone, and dried just prior to their use for alloy preparation. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all the alloys studied and were used throughout this investigation. The metals were sealed inside of small 1-in.-diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. The research described in this Bureau of Minus report was conducted to improve the chromium-iron ratio of offgrade chromite. Two methods were used: (1) Iron was selectively reduced from chromite by carbothermic reduction in an electric-arc furnace, and (2) a mixture of carbon, chromite, and sometimes fluorspar was chlorinated to remove a substantial part of the iron. Chromite concentrate from the Mouat deposit in Montana and from northern California was used in the test work. Chromium-bearing slag and chromite that had been beneficiated by a roast-leach process were each smelted to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Iron was selectively reduced in a laboratory-scale., electric-arc furnace. Carbon additions to the smelting charges varied from 40 to 100 percent of the stoichiometric requirement, and slag basicities were varied from 0.4 to 1.0 chromium-iron ratios of more than 4:1 were obtained with 89 percent recovery of chromium in a chromium-bearing slag.

The objective of this research was to examine variations in melting and forging practice for four titanium-base alloys and to determine their effect on the resultant product. Of particular interest was the evaluation of the skull-casting technique. The data should serve as a guide to producers and consumers of titanium products. Physical properties of four titanium-base alloys in ingot form and in sheet form were evaluated and correlated, where possible, with variations in the melting and casting procedure. Consumable-electrode melting was used throughout, but arc current and furnace backfill pressure were varied, and ingots were formed both by melting directly into a water-cooled copper mold and by skull melting followed by pouring into a graphite mold. Alloying metal additions for the alloys tested were (1) 8 percent manganese, (2) 6 percent aluminum and 4 percent vanadium, (3) 6 percent molybdenum and 2 percent aluminum, and (4) 16 percent vanadium and 2.8 percent aluminum.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. Any consistent relation between gas condition and subsequent mining conditions - outbursting or not might be valuable in prediction of outbursts.INSTANTANEOUS OUTBURSTSInstantaneous outbursts (Hargraves, 1958) , are largely unpredictable and unaccountable ejections of coal (up to 5,000 tons) and gas (up to 5,000,000 cu.ft.) from a standing coal face. Beryllium possesses attractive properties for use in the nuclear and space fields. Since fused-salt electrorefining can be employed to produce this metal in high-purity form from low-grade or scrap metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated electrorefining of beryllium in electrolytes composed of a LiC1-KC1 eutectic mixture plus varying amounts of BeC12. Results showed a 99- percent or better reduction of oxygen and magnesium and a substantial reduction of other minor metallic impurities. Extremely pure beryllium metal was produced. Operating variables, including BeCl2 concentration in the bath (3.5 to 16.5 mole-percent), temperature of operation (450° to 550° C.), and cathode current density (45 to 770 a,/sq, ft.), were studied; their effects on the deposition of metal, working condition of the bath, and purity of the refined metal are discussed. The safety precautions used in handling beryllium in the laboratory are also described.

Continued demands for higher grade, competitive products from the Mesabi Range have made it necessary to increase the efficiency of the process in every possible way. A brief review of a typical heavy media flow scheme, as illustrated in. Figure l, might be in order for those not intimately associated with this process of iron ore beneficiation.

High-expansion foam was applied to the flames of six fuels burning in a 1-foot-diameter tray. The flames of three hydrocarbon fuels were more readily extinguished than the flames of methanol, acetone, or unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine. The result is rationalized on the basis that heat transfer from flame to fuel surface is primarily radiative with the hydrocarbons and more largely convective with the nonhydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION Equipment for producing high-expansion foams has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to control coal mine fires.5 Recently such equipment has been redesigned for portability and has now been produced commercially for other fire-fighting applications. In May 1961, a 50-by 50-foot gasoline fire was extinguished within 2 minutes by a trailer-mounted foam unit that produced 12,000 cu.ft./min. of high-expansion (1,000:1) foam.6

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to give greater impetus to the building of programs safeguarding the employees of the mineral industries from disabling work injuries. The results of the 1960 National Safety Competition are presented in this publication. Mines and quarries that were awarded the Sentinels of Safety trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group and those mineral operations that ranked second, third, fourth, and fifth in the competition are listed with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling work injuries. In addition, this publication presents statistical data on disabling work-injury experience in all other mines and quarries participating in the annual competitions.

Industrial engineering departments perform staff duties and are most effective when sincerely supported by management. In accordance with the needs and desires of the mining companies involved, various industrial engineering functions have been adopted widely at western metal mines during the period 1950-60. Newly organized departments usually conduct method and equipment studies, work-measurement programs, and establish and maintain production standards. Supervisor-training programs and courses are effective in showing the relationship between supervisory responsibility and the purpose for which industrial engineering is practiced. Industrial engineering staffs of western metal mines are composed predominantly of personnel from within the companies. Experienced industrial engineers, not necessarily experienced in mining, frequently are hired by a company to help establish the department. Management consultants frequently are called upon to advise management and instruct department personnel in industrial engineering practices. Some departments have developed satisfactory industrial engineering programs without benefit of formal industrial engineering training or advice.

Philippine laterite and serpentine ores can be utilized in an electric furnace operation to produce both a steel ingot and a ferronickel product. Figure 1 is a schematic interpretation of a plant in which laterite and serpentine ores are processed separately to obtain both ferronickel and steel as products. A relationship of estimated capital requirements and probable returns has been established in this study for a plant of this type. No attempt has been made to evaluate the risks involved in commercial operations. At such time that the project might be constructed and placed in operation, changes in the costs of material, labor, and power may materially affect the profitability aspects of this study. One of the uncertainties involved in the economic evaluation is the cost of mining, handling, and shipping the ores. It is on this basis that the cost of ore delivered at the plant is assumed to be variable at $3, $5, and $7 per net ton (dry basis). For all other costs a plant site at Iligan City, Philip-pine Islands, has been assumed in preparing the economic characteristics for a plant that will process 2,000 tons4/ of ore per day. Results of the study, for the 2,000-ton plant, with all monetary values expressed in terms of United States currency (Philippine peso valued at $0.50), are summarized as follows:

Pulse-forming circuitry is described for use in explosives research that requires precise synchronization and control of events in order to investigate detonation parameters. Included are pulse generators for oscilloscope sweep control, counterchronograph actuators, and a raster-type oscillographic method for the determination of velocities of detonation that are applicable to studies on solid, liquid, and gaseous detonations. INTRODUCTION Prom time to time, requests have been received for information on electronic circuitry used in explosives work at the Explosives Research Laboratory, Bruceton, Pa. The methods used are not entirely original;4 5 6 however, modifications of earlier techniques and some novel design aspects have resulted in time-tested methods that warrant a more detailed description.

The Bureau has published much data on sulfur (4, 15, 23)3, most of it dealing with national or international aspects of the sulfur industry. Little information, however, is available on sulfur marketing in specific States or areas, Therefore, the Bureau has conducted a survey of the resources, production, consumption, and economic future of the sulfur and sulfuric acid industry in States of the Central and Southern Rocky Mountain area - Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico - and in the Northern Plains States - North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, even though these States do not represent an economic or marketing unit. The purpose of this survey is to review the demand for sulfur and primary sulfur compounds that draws upon the natural resources of the region, to discover opportunities for better use of these resources, and also to analyze and evaluate the patterns of consumption, sources of supply, and other factors that affect the demand for these mineral products. While this survey stresses the economic and marketing phases of the industry, a complementary report (32) emphasizes the resources of sulfur in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.

The goal of very maintenance department is the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the plant it serves, To achieve this goal, maintenance men adapt various features and procedures into a program designed to fit the characteristics of their particular plant operation. A few of the basic elements of a sound maintenance program are: 1, A periodic preventive maintenance schedule. 2, A systematic inspection and lubrication procedure. 3. A training program for maintenance personnel. 4 A good equipment-history file system, 5. A carefully planned spare parts inventory.

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines, describing mining methods and performance at individual mining operations throughout the United States. The objective of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating reliable technological information on mining methods, practices, and performance. Limestone deposits in Iowa are extensive and reserves are large. Most of the past production came from the eastern third of the state, although over half of the counties in the state have produced, or are now producing limestone. The stone is used as aggregate, road metal, agricultural lime, riprap, fluxing stone, railroad ballast, and in the manufacture of cement and lime.

The objective of this investigation was to obtain data on friction-head losses of sand slurries during their transport in pipelines. The data ultimately will be used in designing hydraulic transport systems. Information that was incidental to the primary objective was gathered on degradation, changed percolation characteristics, and critical velocities of the slurries~ Tests were made in a closed-circuit pilot plant, with one type of tailing, through horizontal 2-, 3-, and 4-inch-pipe test sections at various pulp densities and flow velocities. Tests were made in a closed-circuit pilot plant, with one type of tailing, through horizontal 2-, 3-, and 4-inch-pipe test sections at various pulp densities and flow velocities. Approximately 2,000 tests were run in the pilot plant. The ranges of flow velocities used in the experiment were 2.8 to 19 f.p.s. in the 2-inch line, 4 to 14.5 f.p.s. in the 3-inch line, and 4 to 11 f.p.s. in the 4-inch line. Velocities were varied in increments of 0.5 f.p.s. through the entire velocity range in each pipe size. Densities were varied in 3-percent increments from 40 to 70 percent solids by weight except for one series of tests in the 2-inch line; in this series, densities were varied in 5-percent increments from 5 to 65 percent solids by weight.

This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.
