This report presents new findings and consolidates previously published data to provide a single reference containing a concise and comprehensive description of the Bureau's work on electrolytic chromium. Two separate systems for electrolytic-chromium recovery were developed, one designated as the oxidized system the other as the reduced system. The electrowinning of chromium metal follows the dissolution of chromium from the ore or from ferrochrome and its separation from gangue and metallic impurities. Chromite was first solubilized by pressure digestion at slightly elevated temperatures in an oxidized acid solution using Na2Cr2O7 as an oxidizing agent. Later it was found that a sodium-free electrolyte was preferable, using return-cell anolyte containing H2SO4 and Cr03 as the oxidizing agent. Gangue materials were separated from the soluble metallics by filtration; and, after the Cr+3 had been stabilized, the metallic impurities were separated as crystalline ammonium salts by vacuum crystallization.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) involves a wide range of practices, from highly informal and minimally mechanized mining operations with predominantly manual work to formal practices carried out by small but high-tech industrial mining operations [1]. ASM may be a traditional practice, with skills passed from one generation to another. It can be an important driver of local economic development, while simultaneously contributing to a complex array of positive and negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts. There are more than 100 million artisanal and small-scale miners in 80 countries worldwide, and they supply around 20% of the worldwide gold production [2]. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MINEM), in 2020, 32% of fatal accidents in formal (legal) Peruvian mining operations were caused by groundfall events [3].The lack of resources, knowledge of best practices in health and safety, and insufficient equipment used in ASM make the probability of suffering work accidents very high. Furthermore, groundfall is one of the main causes of accidents and injuries in underground mines around the world [4], and it is also a concerning problem in ASM, where the associated fatality rate is similarly high. Unfortunately, a proper record of accidents in ASM is not kept, so an estimate of the actual number of groundfall accidents cannot be accurately developed [5]. Currently miners rely on empirical and observational tools acquired through previous experience to assess groundfall risks. The risks for artisanal miners can tend to be significantly greater than risks for those from the mining industry. This is due to the lack of regulation of ASM, which tends to operate outside the legal framework and the regulations lack of enforcement in force for occupational health and safety regulations.

This volume describes a comprehensive program of research into the reliability of mine electrical power system components and the resultant reliability of the total system. The research effort encompassed analytical models, laboratory testing and field testing. The analytical work included definition of terms, fail rate functions and distributions, failure rate estimation and techniques and procedures for theoretical reliability assessment. One of the primary mine power system components addressed in the study was the ac molded case circuit breaker. This device is known to have low reliability and hence an unfavorable impact on mine safety and productivity. Ac molded case circuit breaker reliability was studied by analytical means, laboratory testing and field monitoring. A similar three-pronged' effort was made to study the reliability of undervoltage relays/releases. Particular emphasis was placed on new solid state undervoltage relays. The reliability of bulk power components, such as trailing cab les, motors, control gear, and other equipment, was assessed by gathering maintenance records from active mines. These data were compared to similar records from other industries. The work was extended to include the reliability, availability, maintainability and safety of these components.

From time to time interest has been evidenced in transporting coal with water in pipe lines. About the year 1895, United States patents broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water through pipelines were granted to W. C. Andrews. His process was used to some extent in pumping anthracite culm and waste back into the worked-out portions of the mines. About 1905, W. T. Donnely was granted patents relating to pumping anthracite silt away from the breakers. From about 1913 until 1924, a British engineer, Gilbert G. Bell, used a short pipeline to convey coal with water from barges on the Thames River to the Hammersmith Electricity Generating Station, London. Minus 5-inch coal was transferred 660 yards through an 8-inch pipe. Some trouble was experienced with fine coal, which tended to plug the line. Bell made several proposals to transport coal by pipeline overland from the Midlands to London, a distance of about 100 miles, but these were never adopted. This survey is concerned mainly with the problems presented by actual pipeline transportation of coal with water. It is assumed that the coal will have been processed to remove most of the abrasive impurities by conventional methods prior to introduction into the line, and that it has been crushed to the required top size. Dewatering at the discharge end of the line is considered part of the conventional cleaning process. There still remain many pump-performance and behavior of water-coal mixture problems that can be solved only by actual performance tests. It is recognized that the distribution of coal to other than very large users is not changed. Large storage areas would be required to supply seasonal markets. Large users, such as power plants and heavy industries, could be supplied by branch lines directly to the point of use, It is also recognized that pipe lines might not be able to carry a full range of sized coal to meet market demands in many areas.

This general report considers what promoters of deep basement projects want from their teams and whether they get it often enough. Most large projects are based on complex financial models where the funding is related to a future income stream. Project delays and cost over-runs can critically affect the financial model. Too often, delays and cost over-runs originate in the substructure and foundations. We must take positive steps to improve our industry's reputation for reliability.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a state-of-the-art study of techniques currently employed to close large openings in underground mines. A large opening was considered to be any opening over 10 feet high and having a cross section of at least 200 square feet. Five salt mines and one limestone mine were visited to observe various methods of sealing large openings. Because of the variations in conditions from mine to mine, no definite conclusions could be drawn as to which is the best method. In mines where waste material is available, stoppings built by piling waste material are efficient and economical. Where waste material is not available properly constructed brattice cloth stoppings are superior to those built from wood, concrete block, or urethane foams.

GERMANIUM is an element that has come into widespread use in the electronics industry in recent, years. So far this increasing demand has been, met by ample supply: however, the future balance is uncertain, and the need has been recognized to discover additional domestic sources of germanium. This investigation was conducted to study the possibility of obtaining a potential supply of germanium from coal or coal ash. It has been known for some time that coal contains germanium; the discovery that By ash from coal-fired boilers often contains appreciably more germanium than the original coal suggested the possibility that coal ash might be an abundant and economical source of this element. In this study the concentration of germanium was determined in numerous samples of coal and ash. A number of miscellaneous waste materials also were examined in the course of the investigation; the results are reported as a matter of general interest. The methods and equipment employed are discussed in detail. Sample-preparation and analytical techniques are described in the appendix. Spectrographic analyses were made on a total of 639 samples, including coal, coal ash, slap ash from lignite and peat, wood ash, and various inorganic materials. Qualitative analyses were run on all samples, and quantitative determinations were made on those samples that contained enough germanium to be measured by this method The lower limit at which germanium can be determined quantitatively by spectrographic analysis is 50 parts per million (p. p. m.), but concentrations of less than 20 p. p. m. can be detected qualitatively.

The Hilton and George Fisher deposits occur 22 and 24 km north of Mount Isa, NW Qld, Australia respectively. Both deposits occur as deformed Proterozoic, sediment hosted, stratiform orebodies hosting Pb-Zn-Ag (Hilton) and Zn-Pb-Ag (George Fisher) mineralisation. The two deposits are separated by approximately 2 km of strongly faulted barren shales, mudstones and siltstones along strike. Despite this, correlations between the Hilton and George Fisher deposits have previously been assumed on the basis of textural, lithological and geochemical similarities, but previously lacked specific details to prove exact stratigraphic matches.Feasibility drilling allowed broad correlations based on the position of siltstone pillars separating individual orebodies. However the position of continuous potassium-rich, siliceous and cross-fractured tuffaceous marker beds (TMBs) often used as stratigraphic markers within the Hilton Mine were initially unrecognised within the George Fisher stratigraphy where they are erratically silicified and often not cross-fractured resulting in correlations being difficult to prove. As a more detailed knowledge of TMB locations at George Fisher was gained it was possible to look for corresponding TMBs within the Hilton orebodies. Recent underground stope definition drilling at the two locations enabled specific TMBs, stratigraphic units and even individual sedimentary beds to be matched between the two locations, despite the large separation between mines.The correlation between the two deposits has implications for future exploration drilling north of George Fisher. If a specific stratigraphic horizon can be determined within one hole, positioning of further drillholes can be more accurately planned. The significance of having stratigraphic matches between Hilton and George Fisher also has implications for correlations with other Isa Valley deposits. Convincing preliminary TM and stratigraphic correlations have already been made between George Fisher and the Isa Lead Mine 24 km to the south.

"Underground stone mines in the United States use the room-and- pillar method of mining. The stability of the roof between pillars determines the mining dimensions and size of equipment that can be used. The findings of a survey of roof span stability issues and design practices are presented, and the observed factors contributing to roof instability are discussed. Identified stability issues are evaluated, such as maximum roof span, horizontal stress, and roof beam stability. The results of field observations, roof monitoring, and numerical analyses are used in the evaluation. The importance of the first roof beam thickness and its impact on roof stability and support requirements is presented. An evaluation of the current experience with stone mine roof spans relative to international experience is presented. A step-by-step design procedure is suggested which emphazises the need to collect adequate geotechnical data, understand the immediate roof stability, select a mining direction, and meet support requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn room-and-pillar mines, the roof between the pillars is required to remain stable during mining operations for haulage as well as access to the working areas. Roof and rib falls account for about 15% of all reportable injuries in underground stone mines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2009). Therefore, the stability of the roof is an important safety consideration. The size of the rooms in underground stone mines is largely dictated by the size of the mining equipment. Large mining equipment is used, requiring openings that are on average 13.5 m (44 ft) wide by approximately 7.5 m (25 ft) high to operate effectively (Esterhuizen et al., 2007). The dimensions of the roof spans are largely predetermined by the equipment requirements, and design is focused on optimizing stability under the prevailing rock conditions. If the rock mass conditions are such that the desired stable spans cannot be achieved cost effectively, it is unlikely that underground mining will proceed. In addition, large roof falls can extend across the full width of a room and may extend more than 5 m (16 ft) above the roof line. These large falls are a safety hazard and can have a significant impact on mine access and production. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research into stone mine roof stability has focused on identifying both the causes of roof instability and techniques to optimize stability through design."

Australia has an enviable global reputation as a leader in health and safety outcomes in the hazardous industry of mining, in part due to an increased application of risk management regarding operational planning and mining practice. In 2010, the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) initiated a major project, RISKGATE, to build, capture and deliver a national body of knowledge to assist companies with the management of risk in coal mining. The online system contains information for tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives underground, explosives open cut, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human–machine interface, tailings dams, occupational hygiene and inrush. In 2014, RISKGATE is developing content for fitness for work (fatigue, drugs, alcohol, physical well-being, psychosocial well-being).This paper analyses underground mining fatalities in Australia and the United States since 2002 and introduces RISKGATE with a focus on the knowledge base for management of hazards in underground operations. Through capturing coal industry expert operational knowledge, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover within the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine suitable construction materials for use in brine and steam environments produced from high-salinity geothermal brines. The high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal brines in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) are a valuable source of energy and mineral values. The brine and steam produced from them are corrosive and cause early failure of many common materials of construction. Mass-loss and electrochemical corrosion measurements were conducted on over 60 metal alloys in brine and steam environments produced from geothermal well Magmamax No.1, located at the Salton Sea KGRA, at temperatures from 1800 to 2150 C, and in synthetic Magmamax brine at 105° and 232° C. General corrosion, crevice and pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion were examined along with the effects of dissolved gases. The alloys with the most acceptable corrosion performance in high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal environments were the high-chromium ferritic stainless steels, the Inconels and Hastelloys, and the titanium alloys. Specific alloys that performed well in wellhead brine included Fe29Cr4Mo, E-Brite 26-1, stabilized Fe26Cr1Mo, 6X, Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Ti5OA, TiO.2Pd, and TiCode 12.

This paper discusses the determination of the percentage of crystalline material in a natural silica deposit which would be considered harmful to health (<10 ¦m). A sample of the natural silica material was recovered and split into a number of subsamples. Samples were sieved using a conventional dry sieve to remove material >300 ¦m before testing. Particle size analyses of the fine fraction showed 75 per cent of the material was below 10 ¦m. Initially XRD and XPS were run on the samples to determine the minerals and composition of the sample. The XRD revealed strong quartz peaks and smaller tridymite peaks with a high amorphous background. The XPS indicated traces of iron, titanium and carbon with dominant silicon and oxygen peaks. The structure of the sample was investigated using the SEM. It was apparent that there were a number of larger quartz crystals (>30 ¦m) with a mix of amorphous and crystalline in the finer fraction. It was also observed that amorphous material was attached to the surface of the crystals. In order to determine the percentage of crystalline quartz a known amount of quartz was added to the sample incrementally. On each addition an XRD scan was performed and the area under the peaks recorded. Back analysis of these peaks with an assumed percentage of crystalline material in the original sample gave a crystalline content of 30 per cent. The quantity at the respirable fraction was estimated to be 18.7 per cent.

Introduction The first experiment in underground gasification of coal in the United States was conducted at Gorgas, Walker county, Alabama, under a co-operative arrangement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Company, at the suggestion of the Power Company. The test was conducted on property of the Alabama Power Company, that owns some 19,000 acres of coal-bearing lands on which there is developed a highly mechanized mine producing some 2,500 cons of good quality steam coal per day. At the same locality ?there is a 200,000 kilowatt steam plant one of the largest in the southern portion of the United States. The Alabama Power Company owes much of its beginning in 1912 to British vision and courage. The original plans for building hydroelectric plants in Alabama, and for the construction of necessary transmission lines, were submitted to Sperling & Company, bankers of London, who agreed to underwrite certain bond issues, the proceeds of which would be used in launching the new Company on its programme. The set-up by which these funds from England were received was through an intermediary Canadian company, which the English investors desired. The Canadian company - Alabama Traction, Light and Power Company, Ltd. became owner of the securities of the Alabama Power Company and marketed its own securities through the banking house of Sperling & Company. Without assistance at this time the Alabama Power Company could not have gone ahead with its programme of expansion and the bringing together of the properties necessary for laying the foundation for a strong Company, fortified with ample power resources essential for future requirements and for dependable service to the public.

Organisations are starting to develop processes for achieving sustainability principles they have defined for their organisation. The foundation for these principles is now well accepted. The definition of a sustainability framework is a good starting point for any project. The delivery of the framework requires the organisation to think differently about how project objectives can be met. New tools are becoming available to help achieve the sustainability outcomes for the projects. This paper will examine the project building blocks that are necessary to ensure the sustainability framework can be achieved for the project. These include new approaches to decision-making processes and evaluation tools and when to apply them. An integrated approach with shared expertise to project delivery, which is applicable to the whole supply chain, will be discussed. This will cover sustainability procurement, integrated waste management, cleaner production and eco-efficiency, sustainable products and disposal. A project toolkit will be presented and some key project tools identified. The need for management support in undertaking these new approaches is critical, as is the need to develop partnerships and cooperative management to facilitate delivery.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. A presente contribuição técnica apresenta os resultados alcançados com a implementação da redução do consumo de óleo combustível nos queimadores frontais do gerador de vapor de número 7 da CTE1, agregando redução de custo operacional na geração de vapor e energia de 50Hz da Usina Presidente Vargas. O trabalho aborda os estudos efetuados em relação ao modo operacional na geração de vapor na Caldeira 7 através do consumo de óleo combustível, que até junho de 2012 era consumido segundo uma configuração operacional de 30 t/dia ou ainda 312,5 kg/h em cada um dos quatro queimadores da caldeira, o que agregava um custo significativo ao consumo de combustível na CTE1, já que entre os combustíveis utilizados na produção de vapor e energia, o óleo combustível se mostra com o maior custo. A implantação da redução do consumo de óleo combustível de 30 t/dia para 2 t/dia a partir de julho de 2012 teve como benefício a redução do custo de consumo de combustível e consequentemente a redução do custo total de produção de vapor e energia da CTE1

Itabirito é um minério de fero encontrado no Brasil. As reservas futuras de Itabirito requerem moagem para atingir o grau de liberação necessário para concentração. Os circuitos convencionais de cominuição adotados em projetos de Itabirito consistem de três estágios de britagem seguido de moinhos de bolas. Estes circuitos demandam uma alta frequência de manutenção e uma grande área de construção. Por esta razão um estudo de bancada e piloto foi conduzido para entender a rota de cominuição de Itabirito utilizando moinhos autógenos (AG ou FAG) e semi-autógeno (SAG). Os testes piloto demonstraram que moinhos SAG e AG são apropriados para a cominuição de Itabirito.
