The Aroostook manganese-bearing deposits lie within a rectangle 30 miles wide and 70 miles long. Over 40 different deposits have been discovered in this area, but they have not been mined because the ores are difficult to treat. In 1949, the Maple Mountain area was selected for detailed investigation by the Bureau of Mines, because study by the State of Maine and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that it was the most promising in Aroostook County for developing a large tonnage of reserves. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines disclosed that all of the reported deposits of the central district were located on the limbs of a syncline underlying a pear-shaped area of 283 acres between the crests of Maple Mountain and Hovey Mountain. The ore area has been outlined by trenching and drilling along three sides of the perimeter, while the remaining side is defined by a fault. The area has a length of 6,300 feet and a maximum width of 3,100 feet. Diamond-drill holes have intersected the deposit as deep as 1,550 feet below surface, but additional deep drilling would be required to determine the intensity of folding or warping at depth. The Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit lies in the slates of Ordovician age and is classified into three zones, of which the upper, averaging about 57 feet thick, is designated manganiferous purple and red slate. The central zone, also averaging about 57 feet thick and containing the highest manganese content, is manganiferous, banded hematite. The lower zone is manganiferous, interbedded hematitic and green slate with an average width of about 33 feet. Manganese minerals occur with hematite in all three units. Trenching on the northwestern slope of Hovey Mountain uncovered other disconnected deposits of manganiferous rocks of earlier age than the ore of the syncline. The general strike of these deposits, which range from 15 feet to 75 feet in thickness, is southwest a length of 5,000 feet. They dip steeply southeast. The ore of the syncline is predominantly deep, hematitic red, inclining to red-dish black, fine-grained, dense, and thinly laminated. It is hard and siliceous. Hematite has, in places, been altered to magnetite. Because of the fine-grained texture of the ore, the manganese-mineral constituents are difficult to determine. Of the manganese silicates present, braunite is the most readily identified. Manganese carbonates and oxides are found also.

Five conclusions that emerged from ADL's Contractor Noise Measurements Assessment done for the Bureau of Mines and the 7 December 1971 Bureau of Mines Contractors' Round Table Meeting in Boulder, Colorado were: ? a limited amount of good data has been obtained for characterizing the noise environment for electromagnetic (EM) coal mine operational/emergency communications systems; ? significant noise date gaps still exist; ? suitable instrumentation and data analysis methods are available for filling these data gaps; ? the immediate and most important data gaps should be filled by means of a timely field measurement effort that is purposely limited in scope and duration; ? this field measurement effort should preferably be carried out by a team knowledgeable and experienced in coal mine EM noise measurements.

This report briefly describes the present state of the art and the technological highlights of tunneling from its inception to the present. The discussion is concerned primarily with tunnels driven through relatively competent rock for mine development and various civil purposes. In addition to pinpointing the major technological breakthroughs in tunneling, this report indicates their general effect on the speed of tunneling. The tunneling speeds are based upon data from approximately 80 tunnels listed in the appendix. These data include length; cross section shape and dimension; type of rock; tunneling method; method of breaking, loading, and transporting the rock; average linear progress rate; and cost in values during the period of construction. Most of the tunnels described have diameters of 15 to 30 feet.

"Solvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) is an economical option for the processing of low grade and oxidized copper ore. Phenomenological models were developed to simulate the copper solvent extraction and the electrowinning processes. The two models were linked together to make a SX/EW simulator. The simulator is used to predict the operation of the mines Gaspe pilot plant put in operation in 1996. Results confirm the potential of the simulation that would subsequently be used for student training, process optimization and to assess the performances of control strategies.INTRODUCTIONSolvent extraction followed by electrowinning (SXEW) has become in the last two decades a key process for the recovery of copper from solution obtained by leaching low grade copper ore. Several operations have been commissioned in North and South Americas in the last decade (Arbiter, 1994). In Canada, Gibraltar Mine (Scott, 1991) operates a SX plant followed by electrowinning (EW) to produce copper cathode from leached low-grade ore dumps. From 1996 to 1997 Mines Gaspe operated a pilot plant to test the economical feasibility of leaching an oxidized copper ore, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper. Despite copper SX/EW processes have the reputation of being low cost operations, plant engineers should always look at way to make the plant more efficient. Process models provide an economic platform to learn, control and ultimately optimize the operation of a plant.Several models have been independently proposed to simulate the SX process (Cadman and Hsu, 1970; Medina Gomez, 1980; Wilkinson and Ingham, 1983; Garcia et al., 1988; Aminian et al., 1997) and the EW process (Bryson, 1981; Barton and Scott, 1992; Barton and Scott, 1993). However few papers, if any, deal with the integration of the two process models into a single simulator of a SX-EW plant. This paper describes the development of an integrated simulator for the SX-EW process and shows some steady-state simulation runs of an actual SX-EW pilot plant. The paper consists of four sections. The first section shows the general layout and principles of operation of a SX-EW plant.The second section describes the SX model while the third section deals with the process model used for the copper electrowinning process. The last section shows how the two process models are linked to simulate the operation of the Gaspe pilot plant."

This paper examines the design of longwall shields, focusing on those aspects that are critical to either their successful application or contribution to failure during longwall extraction. In many instances, longwall shields are assessed and designed along lines similar to that of roadway ground support systems, namely according to typical or normal geotechnical conditions. However it will be contended that for longwall shields, this is inappropriate because unlike roadway ground support systems, longwall shields cannot be supplemented with additional or secondary support in localised areas of adverse geotechnical conditions. In other words, the longwall shield needs to be designed according to what are judged to be worst case or adverse geotechnical conditions?the outcome being that a well-designed shield will be significantly over-rated for the majority of its working life. Therefore, it will be argued that the additional capital cost of such shield design can be readily justified as a prudent riskbased outcome that is essential to minimising future business risks due to strata instability on the longwall face. Shield geometry will be discussed, including such relevant factors as leg angle, inclination of the top caving shield, canopy ratio, operating height range, and tip to face distance. These are all well-established longwall shield design considerations and, most importantly, areas whereby inadequate design can render a longwall shield as highly ineffective. The issue of tip to face distance will be considered in detail, in particular, the extent by which it is an important geotechnical design consideration, the conclusion being reached that, in fact, it is not. The critical importance of maximising set to yield ratio within practical operating limits will be justified, the wisdom of this having been subject to questioning in more recent technical literature. Overall, the aim is to provide the industry with a set of suggested guidelines for future use when designing longwall shields and, hopefully, to initiate discussion on a subject that, unlike roadway ground support design, is not well covered in its entirety in the published technical literature.

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract R0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADI provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

"Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

Disadvantages: spoil disposal, not water tight, cannot penetrate rock and most obstructions, soil can erode between the piles if surface water and ground water are not controlled, hard to install reinforcing beams over 409 long; subject to high negative skin friction loads, high grout takes in rubble and organic soils. e. Relative cost to other systems: 30% to 50% more expensive than driven soldier piles and lagging except when surcharge loads are involved, or the pile cannot be driven due to noise and vibrations. About the same cost as a sheet pile system. Very competitive if high vertical load must be supported by the wall.

In the mining industry, rock blasting can be considered as the first phase of comminution. The downstream phases of comminution are mechanical, and consist in consecutive stages of crushing and milling for grain size reduction. The total energy of mechanical comminution depends on grain size and on the resistance of the material to grindability. Usually, the first is quantified by the grain size distribution or one of its KPIs (such as the diameters X50 or X80), while the latter by the working index (WI), representing the amount of energy necessary to reduce the size of grains of a determined amount of material to the desired equivalent diameter (usually expressed in kilowatt hours per tonne – kWh/t). It is widely recognised that it is possible to manage the output of a blast in terms of grain size distribution varying specific charge (powder factor – PF) and charge distribution; specific algorithms such as the KUZ-RAM or the SWEBREC have been created to predict such output. It has also been demonstrated how higher PFs weaken the blasted material by creating micro-fractures that reduce its WI. This paper focuses on a related aspect: the influence of charge distribution on the specific comminution energy in crushing and milling. Small-scale blasts have been performed on 14 marble blocks with different PFs and charge distribution. For every PF, charges have been designed to simulate concentrated and distributed geometries. Concentrated charges simulate opencast blasts with large-diameter holes, with large burdens and spacings. Distributed charges simulate bench blasts with small-diameter holes and reduced burden and spacing. Three control blocks have been fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. For every sample the grain size distribution and the WI in ball mill has been determined. Results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution in milling. This report describes the study of factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) trailing cable splices used in underground coal mines. Improvements in quality, dependability, and design of splice kits and shop splices are presented in the study results and recommended guidelines and regulations. Recommended research programs are included which describe approaches for development of the recommended guidelines and regulations for medium voltage trailing cable splices. The basis for the conclusions and recommendations presented in this report is included in three appendices which describe a survey, splice examination, and general requirements development prepared during the progress of this study.

Leonardite is a coallike substance, similar in structure and composition to lignitic coal and believed to be derived from lignitic coal by the process of natural oxidation. Leonardite is little known outside lignite-producing areas and has been developed commercially only to a minor extent. The higher oxygen content and less compact structure of leonardite, compared with lignite, make it undesirable as a fuel but indicate that it has potential as a source of chemicals and for other nonfuel uses. It is a convenient source of humic acids. The United States has a large natural reserve of leonardite; furthermore, it can be produced in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The significant elemental difference between leonardite and lignite is the oxygen content (leonardite, 28-29 percent; lignite, 19-20 percent). The higher oxygen content of leonardite is due entirely to a Larger number of carboxylic acid groups. This fact explains the 17-Cold increase in alkali solubility of leonardite. Spectral studies indicate that the material is mixed salts of humic acids.

The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer, Chief Scientist, and Chief Mining Engineer, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaisons with other government agencies, mineral industries, and professional societies. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions: (1) Developing new and improved technology that will make the production and processing of minerals more efficient, safer and more healthful for mineral workers and the public, and more compatible with a quality environment.

The twenty-ninth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture of the IMM, presented at Tunnelling '97, London, 2-4 September 1997. The tunnelling industry is well prepared to face the challenge from the population explosion in urban areas in the near future. Many well-established yet redundant concepts are still impeding progress, however, including the prediction of excessive surface ground settlements. The correct selection of TBM can minimise these, and ground deformations can be avoided completely if the appropriate techniques are applied. Advanced techniques have been used in the Tokyo Bay Crossing, where the tunnel lining was installed by robots. Other advanced techniques include the use of a sliding slip form to give temporary support to an extruded tunnel lining, the chemical processing of ground by polymers during earth-pressure balanced tunnelling and the use of electronic monitoring and steering devices in TBMs. There will be challenges to tunnelling in urban environments, as open cut techniques will no longer be tolerated. The underground Neves Corvo copper-tin mine in southern Portugal currently disposes of its tailings in a ætraditionalÆ wet tailings impoundment. With the development of new technologies for preparation and transport of thickened tailings or paste, alternative tailings disposal options have become available that provide a more sustainable water management system and a higher degree of environmental protection. In addition, growing European resistance towards subaqueous disposal may well result in mandatory use of dry disposal methods in the near future. Twenty-four tailings disposal alternatives were evaluated through a cost-effective and easily-implementable bench-scale geochemical screening program conducted at site. Since the tailings are pyrite-rich and highly acid generating, particular emphasis was placed on monitoring likely indicators of sulfide oxidation under the various simulated disposal scenarios. Dependent parameters investigated as part of the program included moisture content, use of alkaline additives (lime, cement), use of a bactericide, and agitation. Response parameters included paste pH, specific conductance, and temperature as indicators of oxidation. The testing was carried out for 30 weeks. Results indicate that a number of relationships between the geochemical stability of the samples (ie sulfide oxidation) and sample characteristics can be readily identified. Based on the results of the screening program, a limited number of tailings mixtures have been selected for further long-term testing in field weathering cells to aid in the identification of the optimal mix design for future tailings disposal at the Neves Corvo Mine. This type of testing provides an inexpensive and reliable methodology for semi-quantitative comparison between tailings disposal alternatives, in particular at locations where more rigorous evaluation through long-term, fully replicated testing is not immediately feasible.

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.
