Advancements in support technology have occurred to a large extent because of the demands of the mine operators. Shield supports are no exception. The most notable changes in shield technology in the past decade have been increases in shield capacity and life expectancy, which have increased by a factor of 4 and 7 respectively since the inception of the shield support 25 years ago. The purpose of this paper is to set goals for the future generations of longwall shields. These goals include: (1) 100,000 cycle life expectancy, (2) improved hydraulic diagnostic capability, (3) smart load control with adjustable setting pressure algorithms, (4) composite material design to reduce weight and increase shield width, (5) constant set leg cylinder design, (6) improved joint design to reduce wear and stress, (7) advancements in leg cylinder socket design, and (8) an instrumented shield to measure in-service structural component loading. These design issues will continue to push the envelope in longwall shield technology that has provided the safest and most productive mining system employed in the history of mining. In preparation for this, a historical examination of shield failures is made and recent trends in shield design are evaluated. Design practices to improve structural margins of current designs are also addressed.

This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.

The purpose of this short paper is to present soil profiles and basic soils information for the portion of the I-880 Replacement Project alignment where highway structures are to be built. The information presented here is derived primarily from foundation investigations conducted by the Caltrans Foundation Unit (currently the Structures Foundation Branch, Office of Structural Foundations) and by others under Caltrans direction. The foundation investigation for the I-880 Replacement Project began in May of 1991. The field work was completed in May of 1992 and consisted of 93 rotary sample borings, 11 consolidation sample borings, 6 TEXAM® pressure meter borings, six in-place vane shear borings and 57 electronic cone penetrometer soundings.

In 1919 the United States was threatened with a shortage of gaso- line. In spite of this well-known fact, a detailed field investigation has shown that in one stage only of handling crude oil the volume of gasoline that evaporates is equal to one-thirtieth of the country's yearly gasoline production. This loss occurs during the few days that the oil is stored on the leases before being taken by the pipe line, and in 1919, in the Mid-Continent field alone, it amounted to 122,100,000 gallons. Large as it is, it is only a part of the loss on the lease. Investigation has further shown that the gasoline in crude oil evaporates from one-half to six-tenths as rapidly as the same gaso- line after being distilled and stored, all evaporative conditions being the same. Many wastes in the oil fields are called "necessary." By this is meant that the cost of preventing the waste is greater than the gain through saving. Evaporation losses have fallen heretofore in this category, but now they must be considered unnecessary. In other words, it is no longer economical for any handler of crude oil to permit losses through evaporation. In accordance with its purpose of seeking to conserve mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the loss of gasoline by evaporation in the storage and handling of petroleum. Inasmuch as most producers had not decided that their losses justified cor- rective measures and no evidence was available on the comparative losses in various stages of handling the oil, the investigation was limited to determining by experiment and observation the nature and magnitude of evaporation losses, where the greatest losses are, and the factor controlling evaporation.

WITH the development of new processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels, an extensive literature search was undertaken to uncover fundamental relationships between fluid and heat flows and the operating variables of new types of converters. Examination of published correlations revealed that considerable uncertainty existed in the correlation of the operating variables of such equipment with the pressure drops which could be expected through packed and fluidized systems; correlations proposed in the literature differed from each other frequently by as much as 75 to 100 percent. Because new processes, especially more recent modifications of the original Fischer-Tropsch process, must compete with old, firmly established processes on the basis of unit product cost, the pressure-drop correlations in the literature were considered to be too inaccurate for use in calculating the energy required to pass fluids through packed beds. The following study was begun in 1946 to develop correlations that would be suitable for the design of new equipment in which fluids are brought into contact with granular materials. To arrive at general relationships, systems were chosen that did not involve chemical reactions, and a, particular effort was made to give the correlations only in terms of quantities that are ordinarily available from general process and design specifications.

Helical Piles are increasingly being used to support and rehabilitate structures subjected to compressive axial loads. Traditionally, empirical correlations between installation torque and load capacity of helical screw piles are used as the field quality control. Load tests, however, are always recommended to validate the installation process and design methodology. This paper describes a test program performed on helical piles installed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site of the University of Massachusetts - Amherst campus (UMass-Amherst), well known for its deep varved clay deposit. Seven of these piles were submitted to Dynamic Load Tests using the Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA), and also to Static Load Tests. Good agreements were obtained between the results of the dynamic and static load tests, encouraging the use of the former testing method as a viable alternative to the latter for determining the compressive load capacity of helical piles installed in cohesive soils. The results of the load tests were also compared to the predictions based on torque correlations, resulting in correlation coefficients which were higher than the ones traditionally used.

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. Safety rules for installing and using electrical equipment in and about coal mines covered in this information circular supersede those previously included in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 514, issued in 1952. This revision brings these rules up to date and more nearly in line with present operating and safety practices in the industry. The rules are intended to supplement existing Federal and State regulations, and no provision shall be construed to oppose or supersede any provisions of the Federal Mine Safety Codes, the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, or the mining laws of any State. The rules were designed to permit progress, such as application of new or improved materials and equipment or use of new practices where these materials, equipment, or practices retain or improve the level of safety established by these requirements. It is hoped that they will fill the need for a concise edition for mine electricians and electrical engineers, especially those who do not have ready access to more detailed rules or codes.

The year 1980 on the whole was not a good year for the world's mineral industry. The general upturn of activities in 1979 after a rather poor 1978 showing was not maintained with a number of key measurement standards showing downturns. Most notably, the world's steel and petroleum industries recorded significant reductions in output, the former in response to markedly lower demand levels and the latter partly in response to lower industrial consumption owing to general economic conditions and partly owing to successes in campaigns for the reduction of energy use in general and petroleum product use in particular among major importing nations that were feeling the trade balance pinch of ever-higher oil prices. During 1980, a number of political events-some international in scope, some confined to single nations-had significant influence upon world mineral industry activities and mineral commodity supplies, and other political happenings had the potential to significantly affect the industry in future times.

This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.

This report is volume 3 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

The point-source function introduced by Horner' us a solution to the general unsteady-state equation for the flow of fluids through porous media has been utilized to calculate pressure profiles for adjacent wells as a function of time. By trial and error, the time at which the pressure waves meet to cause interference can then be calculated. For this calculation, the time of interference is arbitrarily defined as that time when both pressure waves exhibit a pressure decrease of 25 psi ar the same point within the formation. To illustrate the method, an example involving two adjacent wells producing at different rates has been worked out and is presented in detail. INTRODUCTION The initiation of production of a new well is usually accompanied by pressure drawdown measurements in order to establish the extent and characteristics of the formation. The interpretation of such pressure drawdown data is based on mathematical developments involving a single well in an infinite reservoir. If more than one well is present in a reservoir, the possibility of interaction between wells exists. Therefore, care must be taken in interpreting the pressure drawdown data. It becomes important to be able to determine when this interaction, or interference, becomes significant. This paper presents a method for the prediction of the approximate time of interference between two such adjacent wells. The basic differential equation describing the pressure distribution existing during unsteady-state flow of a slightly compressible fluid has been solved by Hor-ner.' for a constant production rate from a circular homogeneous reservoir of infinite extent. The solution utilizes the point-source function to define the pressure at various points within the formation as a function of time. I. INTRODUCTION The challenge of moving the use of nuclear energy from military to civilian use was first issued by President Dwight Eisenhower in his December 8, 1953 “Atoms for Peace” speech delivered at the United Nations. Eisenhower stated: “The United States knows that if the fearful trend of atomic military build up can be reversed, this greatest of destructive forces can be developed into a great boon, for the benefit of all mankind. * * * * The more important responsibility of this Atomic Energy Agency would be to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine, and other peaceful activities. A special purpose would be to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Atomic Energy Commission promoted the use of nuclear power as the answer to our nation’s energy problems. Nuclear power would provide energy too cheap to meter. The utility industry responded and numerous plants were planned with over one hundred constructed from the 1970’s to the 1990’s. Capital costs for nuclear power plants escalated due to permitting changes and public opposition, and the Three Mile Island incident caused new nuclear plant construction to cease. Today, we once again are experiencing a nuclear renaissance. Concerns over global warming and rapid projected increases in the demand for electricity have caused many nations to begin construction of new nuclear fleets. The price of uranium to fuel these reactors, which had dropped to an historical low of $7.10 in 2001, has surged to $56.00 as of October 2006. This paper will review some of the social, environmental, and government issues that are all playing a role in the resurgence of the nuclear fuel industry.

An architect representing the Atlanta office of the Brick Institute of America periodically presents a slide lecture to interested groups entitled "The First 10,000 Years of Brick". The title signifies the fact that brick, man's oldest manufactured building material, has been around for quite some time and will continue to be utilized by architects and builders in the foreseeable future. This is not to say that the brick industry can rest on its laurels and ignore the competition presented by newer more innovative products. The industry will have to be equally inovative and market oriented in order to maintain its market share of the predicted construction boom between now and the year 2000. The implication is made, however, that brick can be produced under rudimentary conditions and that the desire to use the product has been long standing. In addition, history has sham that there has been plentiful clay available to produce the product. This paper is an attempt to assess the climate in which the brick industry will operate during the next 26 years. An analysis of regulatory conditions affecting the manufacture of the product will be followed by an assessment of the materials environment in which the industry will be operating. These factors are then reconciled with a projected demand for the product to determine the ability of the industry to satisfy future demand for brick. From a mineral point of view this paper will address itself generally to the availability of and demand for clay. However, other than a brief overview of the uses of other specific types of clay, it will concentrate on the clays utilized in the production of structural clay products, specifically brick.

"The Key Lake uranium mill is located in Northern Saskatchewan. It treats a high grade, complex uranium and metal sulphide ore. The plant and process are in many respects unique, because commercial treatment of this type of uranium ore had never been done before. The process and engineering design was based on extensive laboratory test results. A pilot plant testing stage was omitted because of confidence in the test results and time constraints to bring the plant into production.The bench scale testwork on exploration drill core samples along with preparation of the feasibility study and environmental impact statement were carried out between 1976 and 1979. The contract for detailed engineering was awarded to Wright Engineers of Vancouver in late 1980 and in August of 1981 following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted.Construction began immediately, and during the winter the foundations for many of the plant buildings were poured and by the beginning of the following winter the buildings had been erected and installation of equipment began. Despite a six month construction worker strike in 1982, the crushing plant started up in June of 1983 and ore processing commenced in October of that year, approximately 3 months behind the original schedule.This paper describes the mill design and compares the expected performance, with the operating experience. Emphasis is directed towards flowsheet and equipment changes made since start-up, operational difficulties encountered and further improvements envisaged. Auxiliary systems are only discussed where they directly affect mill operation."

This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1990 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. Among the most significant to be produced in Africa were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, coal, cobalt, copper, diamond, fluorspar, gold, lithium minerals, manganese, phosphate, platinum-group metals, the titanium minerals-ilmenite and rutile, vanadium, vermiculite, uranium, and zircon. Several of these, chromite, cobalt, diamond, and manganese, were not produced in the United States. Despite the underdevelopment of much of Africa, mineral raw materials playa very important part in the national economies of many of its countries. In many cases, the production of minerals is the dominant economic activity in the country, often having the largest and most sophisticated work force. In several countries, one or two mineral commodities are dominant in a weakly diversified economy. Among these are petroleum and diamonds in Angola, petroleum in the Congo, gold in Ghana, bauxite in Guinea, uranium in Niger, phosphate in Senegal and Togo, and copper and cobalt in Zaire and Zambia.
