Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

This information circular describes research the Bureau of fines has conducted to improve technology for recovering precious metals from low-grade resources. Many of the reported findings are recent, and some of the work described is ongoing. Topics discussed include cyanidation of carbonaceous gold ores to enhance gold recovery, a new method for precipitating mercury during cyanide leaching of gold ores, a staged heap leaching process to generate suitable solutions for direct electrowinning of gold, the use of anion-exchange resins to recover gold from cyanide solutions, and precious metals recovery from electronic scrap.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. Mineral resource studies by the Bureau of Mines indicate three areas within the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness have mineral resource potential. Regional studies suggest that a granitic stock on the south side of the Wilderness has high potential for a Climax-type stockwork molybdenum deposit (pl. 1, no. 8); but detailed surface investigations failed to recognize a deposit. The Elk Summit area on the north side of the Wilderness contains subeconomic resources of columbium (niobium)-bearing ilmenite in placers (p1. 1, no. 19). Subeconomic silver-copper-lead resources occur in a vein on the northeast side of the Wilderness at the Clift Mine (pl. 1, no. 2-5). The study area has no known deposits of oil and Haas, coal, geothermal resources, or other energy-related commodities.

Despite the assertion above, this paper is not about to provide delegates with the answer to whom they ought to consult or identify the expectations that Maori might have in regard to the consultation process. It would be a very brave person indeed who would venture an opinion on such a sensitive subject. There are no short cuts to finding out what expectations Maori might have on any given situation. Nothing can be taken for granted. What this paper will attempt to do however is provide practical insights into what might be on the minds of Maori interests as they deal with the issues associated with mineral resources, particularly those under Treaty of Waitangi Claim. The Treaty of Waitangi has a significant bearing on the current debate between Maori and the Crown regarding ownership of mineral resources in New Zealand. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently hearing a case presented by a number of Iwi over the ownership of oil and gas resources in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. Others will follow. The Crown and Maori have never been able to settle differences over ownership rights without resorting to legal action and it looks like this scenario is about to be repeated in regards to minerals. The Crown has a duty to actively protect the Maori interest. This is a fundamental expectation in the relationship between Maori and the Crown. In the case of minerals, Maori have yet to see the Crown do its duty. The impact on developers has become evident through Maori objections to consent applications as the issues of mineral right remain unresolved.

Foram utilizadas a calorimetria diferencial, cartografia Raman e difração de raios X para o estudo. Foi mostrado que existe uma influência significativa da textura do substrato no crescimento de grãos de anatase e rutila no filme de TiO2. Amostras com menor rugosidade apresentaram grãos mais desenvolvidos para todas as temperaturas de cristalização. Mostrou-se também que o substrato de NiTi promoveu a formação de TiO2 rutila em temperaturas abaixo daquelas observadas para a cristalização de pós.

THE meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept. 12 to 15, inclusive, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. It was at Wilkes-Barre, in 1871, that the foundation was laid for the great institution that now includes in its roster the greatest names. in mining engineering in every civilized country of the world. The founders of the Institute, with rare prescience, established a common ground upon which all mining engineers, whatever particular branch they might consider most pertinent, could stand securely, assured of a deep-seated interest from their brethren similarly minded in other localities. So wise and clear was the vision of the founders that every engineer connected with mining has found it beneficial, not to say indispensable, to maintain his connection with the Institute and to increase his technical enthusiasm through the medium of the valuable technical publications. The little coterie of 1871 has grown to a strong body of more than 10,000 members in 1921, reflecting the glory of the founders in the record of the accomplishments written on the pages of the fifty years of the

The role of dedicated operational support in the ramp-up and stabilisation of the FeNi-II furnace for ferro-nickel production at PT Antam?s smelter located in Pomalaa, Indonesia is described. The furnace was uprated to 32MW capability in a rebuild performed in 2005. This primarily involved installing a larger transformer, coupled with adoption of HATCH water-cooled copper plate, waffle and flanker coolers with integrated metal and slag tapblocks, HATCH air-cooled copper fin lower sidewall cooling and HATCH vertical sidewall binding system ? ?holddowns?. Following a smooth commissioning period, the progress in attaining the preliminary ramp-up target load of 24MW is described. This initial target was set by Antam, subject to some prevailing smelter equipment constraints, particularly kiln capacity. Stabilisation of the furnace operation is discussed, together with some of the specific commissioning and operational challenges surmounted by the joint Antam-HATCH team. These included: ?Mastering furnace integrity monitoring and operation with copper coolers, especially metal tapblock planned maintenance and repair strategies; ?Transition from traditional ?immersed electrode? to ?brush-arc? mode of operation approaching as closely as possible to the productive ?shielded-arc? mode of operation within existing equipment constraints; ?Reductant selection and control issues; ?Utilising the sophisticated furnace monitoring to provide detailed indication and warning of potentially destructive furnace upset conditions such as Si reversion and CO boils.

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.

IN 1902, a famous Canadian geologist made the following statement : ?'From what we know row of the iron-ore fields of the Province, we may feel that Ontario is assured of a great future as an iron-ore producing country. Judging from the extent of the territory over which the newly discovered ranges have been found, Ontario should in the not far distant future take her place as one of the chief iron producers in the world". In 1905, an official of the Department of Mines said: "In ten years Canada will have b:ecome a great metallurgical country. You will see an iron industry in this Dominion larger than in any country in the world. Canada will yet furnish the world with its iron supply. It will be the same with iron as with wheat. A decade from now Canada will outstrip all other countries in wheat growing. The production of iron at a cheaper rate than it can be made elsewhere will cause Canada to take a similar position as far as iron is concerned". In 1924, a former President of the Institute, in arguing his claim for inconceivable mineral wealth in this country, stated as a "certainty" that iron-ore deposits on the scale of the ones in Minnesota would be found "again and again" in the Canadian Precambrian. In 1930, a Minister of Mines announced that "The country surrounding Churchill holds large deposits of valuable iron and coal", and he stated that, at that place, 'We will have an industry in iron that will compare with Pittsburgh". These statements are definite promises, just as definite and important as the statement "I promise to pay" on a note, and they are not fulfilled by casually stating, as is the habit, that someday we will work our low-grade iron ores. Nor are they fulfilled by stating, as is often done, "Oh, So-and-So did not mean that ' . Due to their importance and to the prominent positions held by the men who made these statements, they were widely circulated throughout Canada. They were taken at their face value, and on the strength of them and many more of the same kind in regard to our other resources we have planned and built, at huge expense, provinces, governments, civil services, railways, and other equipment. The reserves that were to justify these expenditures have not appeared. There has not been a ton of iron ore mined in Canada for many years, and important commercial reserves are unknown. We have built the mill, but adequate ore is lacking.

The number of Native Americans presently working as mining engineers is extremely low-perhaps three in the entire US. At the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, it was felt that introducing high ability students to mining engineering at the high school level would encourage more to consider mining engineering as a career. New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, NM, has initiated a continuing summer college program for Native American high school students. The program, which began in the summer of 1980, is designed to introduce participants to college life, enrich their high school curricula, and expose them to the problems and challenges of a career in mining and related engineering fields. Students From reservations throughout New Mexico with a demonstrated aptitude for science and mathematics were encouraged to apply for admission. Preference was given to high school sophomores and juniors since it is hoped that students will want to return for a second year before graduating from high school and beginning university studies. The program seeks to impress upon the students the need fir Native Americans in the fields of seience and mineral engineering.

The Fleming method is widely used for the analysis and prediction of single pile behaviour under maintained loading. The method does not distinguish between bored and driven piles. Driven piling avoids the need to dispose of spoil from the pile installation and is therefore becoming increasingly attractive. This paper considers the theoretical effects of the possible preload at the base of a driven pile after installation, using the hyperbolic functions as defined by Fleming. The Fleming method is reviewed and the equations and analyses are adapted, using spreadsheets, to allow for a possible preload. The simplifying assumption of the effect of the elastic compression of the pile is also reviewed and a more analytical method adopted to assess the elastic compression. Some driven pile test data is analysed to consider the possible effects of the preload on the performance of a driven pile and to test the theoretical relationships that are developed in the paper.

The Chairman opened the session by wondering why so few papers on Maritime Structures had been received for this conference. Perhaps because the marine environment is so hostile and the access so difficult that engineers tend to be more prudent about new ideas and designs. Dennis Waite noted the number of grey hairs in the room - grey hairs which could be equated with experience gained the hard way. He hoped that this experience would be passed on in the discussion period of this session. The Chairman was delighted to welcome two authors from China, Mr Sun and Mr Liang. He was most grateful on behalf of the conference for their efforts both in preparing their papers and for being able to present them. He regretted that Messrs Noce and Fedolino were not able to present their paper and then welcomed Mr Christensen from Denmark who would present the first paper.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. Introduction The Outokumpu copper mine is situated in eastern Finland, 50 kilometers west of the city of Joensuu or 225 kilometers directly north of the city of Viborg (Viipuri), which is situated at the eastern end of the gulf of Finland (Figure 1). The ore-body was discovered in 1910 by Dr. Otto Trüstedt after two years of careful, scientifically-directed, search. During the early period of development of the mine, the ore was treated locally and the copper re-covered by an electrolytic process. Now the ore is concentrated by tables and by flotation. The concentrates are shipped to Germany for refining. In 1929 the mine produced 150,000 tons of ore from which between 20,000 and 25,000 tons of flotation concentrates containing 20 per cent copper were produced. Profits in 1929 were approximately half a million dollars, but the present price of copper will affect very seriously the profits for 1930. The ore reserves are given as between 7 and 8 million tons (1). The grade of ore is stated to be 4 percent to 6 percent copper, with a little zinc.

The paper describes solutions given to foundation problems during the reconstruction of a power plant set on fire, located adjacent to several still Working Units. After a detailed site and laboratory investigation, it was decided that it could be possible to include within the new foundations the preexisting cast in situ driven piles with enlarged base 50 cm in diameter and let them work with new 41 cm driven, cast in situ piles without enlarged base. Demolition of existing caps was carried out with expansive mortar in order to avoid any possible damage to piles, whose actual conditions were checked by several load tests. New piles were designed to support service load by shaft resistance, in order to limit total and differential settlement. When piles had to be driven adjacent to nearby structures, measurements of peak soil particles velocity were carried out while driving piles at decreasing distance from critical locations. By preboring most of the upper clay layer it was possible to reduce within safe limits for structures the induced vibrations.
