As part of the Woodrow Wilson Replacement Bridge project several damaged wetland and environmental areas were to be mitigated. One of the mitigation projects consisted of constructing a Denil fish ladder around Peirce Mill Dam in Rock Creek National Park, Washington, D.C. The dam is a historic structure operated by the National Park Service. The fish ladder is located between the east abutment of the dam and Beach Drive, a major collector road. Construction of the fish ladder required removal of a portion of the east abutment and an excavation that extended about 22-ft below the pavement of Beach Ave. It was not possible to close Beach Drive except for very brief intervals or at night; therefore, a support of excavation system that would minimize disruption to the public was required. The high groundwater required that the groundwater be cut off prior to excavation; the random rubble and soil fill, and shallow but erratic rock surface precluded driving sheet piling. A jet grout system was selected because the grout probe could penetrate the rubble fill, stabilize a variety of soil conditions, and cut off the ground water prior to excavation. It was not possible to construct a stable wall without tiebacks or soil nails. Given the schedule and tight working conditions it was decided that soil nails through the jet grout wall facing would be the most cost effective method, as it did not reduce the working space as rakers would and would be more cost effective than prestressed tiebacks.

Energy consumption, being a large proportion of the input of the ferroalloy production process, can be measured in terms of the efficiency with which the energy is utilized and the effectiveness with which it is used. The efficiency of the usage of energy revolves around the specific consumption of the energy for the production of the alloy, which encompasses the thermodynamic aspects of the process and is more of a metallurgical function that will not be addressed further in this paper. The effectiveness with which the energy is utilized is determined by the optimisation of the electricity supply from the utility (in this case Eskom). The South African electricity supply industry is on the brink of considerable restructuring, implying changes in ownership, structure and regulation. In other countries, however, restructuring has often seen higher prices. Owing to the diversity of growth prospects in South African markets, Eskom is turning to new market management and generation strategies. In future, Eskom will develop pricing strategies to increase demand from attractive customer segments such as paper & pulp, iron & steel, aluminium, and other metallurgical industries. There will be a broader spectrum of product offerings, including dynamic pricing options and demand-side management incentives. In a future electricity market that will become more dynamic and demanding, it will become increasingly important for electricity consumers to optimise their electricity supply. There are many facets in optimising the electricity supply, which include optimal utilisation of the tariff, integrating energy cost management into the production planning process, implementation of demand-side management actions, modelling, scenario planning (.what-ifs?.), optimisation, maintenance scheduling coordinated with the tariff periods, etc. This paper gives consideration to the status of the development of technology at the manganese alloy works of Samancor at Meyerton, South Africa in order to increase the effectiveness with which energy is utilized.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

"Abstract The lateral earth pressure of vertical circular shaft is investigated by using experimental tests and a theoretical analysis. The emphasis was quantifying on the magnitude and distribution of a lateral earth pressure measured by three-dimensional arching effect. A framework for determining the earth pressure distribution on the basis of both centrifuge model and full-scale field test results is introduced. Through these studies, it is found that the lateral earth pressure decreases within active displacement (dh/H: 0.2×10-2, dh: horizontal displacement, H: Height of vertical shaft) of wall at deep excavation and the arching effect is more significant for deep excavation than for shallow excavation. It is also found that the lateral earth pressure acting on a vertical circular shaft considering arching effect is 70% smaller than that calculated by Rankine theory, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of realistic earth pressure for vertical circular shaft subjected to arching pressure.INTRODUCTIONIn South Korea, an increasing need for underground excavation and the application of the vertical circular wall (i.e. vertical shaft) is becoming an important issue in engineering practice. Here the vertical circular wall is generally embedded in soft or hard rocks through weathered soil varying thicknesses ranging up to 15 m. Since 1980, a number of huge excavation projects such as underground space for constructing power stations, subways, high-speed railways, and many lifeline constructions have been performed in urban areas (Jeong and Seo, 2004). Although there have been considerable advancements in construction techniques involving vertical circular wall, it is still very important for tunnel engineers to control the lateral earth pressure. Additionally, Proper estimation of earth pressures is a key factor in design of vertical circular wall. Because of three dimensional arching effects, i.e. convex arching and/or inverted arching, the earth pressure acting on a circular type of wall is less than other types. Thus, the vertical circular wall is generally used."

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. Reports of delays and cost blowouts in major study and construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the resources industry. This is mainly being attributed to an escalating cost environment associated with the increased number of projects in the development to construction pipeline and a scarcity of competent skilled resources to deliver these projects. However, not all this effect can be directly attributed to the current environment. Historically the mining industry has not performed well in its ability to deliver projects according to the financial and physical parameters forecast in the feasibility study process. To manage the risks associated with delivery of major projects, resource companies need to ensure they use a standardised approach to management of their project development to satisfy project objectives and enable more efficient use of the increasingly limited available resources. Each discrete step in advancing the project from scoping study to operations needs to be integrated, reducing the amount of rework and duplication. This paper is primarily a consolidation of existing ideas on project management systems but also introduces new concepts to solve current issues. It describes the basic components of a typical mining project, the issues that commonly arise, the key attributes, and critical steps required for an effective integrated project management system covering projects from initial scoping studies through to project commissioning and operation. This paper focuses on technical study components of the mine development project with allowance for transitioning to design and construction and operation phases.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

STATNAMIC load testing augmented with embedded instrumentation has been successfully used to obtain structural and geotechnical design information on large diameter spun cast concrete cylinder piles on many large marine construction projects. The paper focuses on one particularly interesting large marine project involving a new bridge to St. George Island, Florida where instrumentation and STATNAMIC load testing was used in conjunction with static load testing on high capacity piles. The information presented includes embedded instrumentation measurements taken during pile fabrication (post-tensioning), during pile driving, during static load testing, and STATNAMIC load testing. As much of this data is the first of its kind on concrete cylinder piles, it is exciting to present the foundation industry with this additional insight as to the behavior of this pile type and the accuracy of the methods used to test them.

Specific byproduct metals covered are cadmium, germanium, indium, and thallium from the zinc system; antimony and bismuth from the lead system; vanadium, radium, and scandium from the uranium system; rare-earth oxides from the rare-earth system; and cobalt, gallium hafnium, and rubidium from other systems. The report discusses various metallurgical systems, marginal and incremental production costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and historical data on price, consumption, and supply.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, calcium carbide, acetylene, Newcastle The manufacture of calcium carbide in Newcastle, South Africa, was started in the late 1950s by a company called South African Carbide, at the Ballengeich site. In 1978, this operation was bought by the forerunner to the present AECI Ltd, a large producer of commodity chemicals at the time. Production continued at this site until 1992. In the meantime, Karbochem, an operating division of Sentrachem Ltd, was also manufacturing carbide in Newcastle, as a building block for the manufacture of synthetic rubber. In 1990, the Karbochem calcium carbide operation was closed down. In 1992, the AECI carbide business and the Karbochem production facility were amalgamated, and production continued under the Karbochem name. In 1997, the Dow Chemical Company bought the holding company of Karbochem, and the carbide business continued operations until 2003. In June 2003, the business was sold to a management consortium as SA Calcium Carbide (Pty) Ltd. Later, in October 2004, 100% of the shares were acquired by the Andina Group. Today, the Andina Group, consisting of SACC from South Africa, CIL from UK, and ANDINA from Argentina, has become a global leader in the manufacture and supply of calcium carbide and calcium silicon, ferro silicon 75% and derivatives, recarburizers with low nitrogen content, acetylene, carbon black, micro-silica, and silicon metal. The production facilities at Newcastle comprise a 52 MVA submerged arc furnace of a closed design, carbon monoxide gas recovery, recovery of fine raw materials via a hollow electrode system, and an extensive computer-controlled process. These all enable an efficient state-of-the-art operation. The downstream processing facilities consist of screening and drumming facilities, milling facilities, an acetylene generation plant, and an acetylene carbon black plant. Clearly, SA Calcium Carbide (Pty) Ltd has a long history of supplying quality calcium carbide to the industries that it proudly serves.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH), together with employees from The Doe Run Company, are monitoring and evaluating the stability of a pillar retreat section at the Fletcher Mine, a lead/zinc, room-and-pillar mine near Bunker, MO. Cemented rockfill is being used to provide roof support as high-grade, remnant ore pillars are mined. Earth pressure cells and deformation meters placed in backfill panel pillars monitor stress change and vertical deformation, respectively, as nearby ore-bearing pillars are extracted. Similarly, biaxial stressmeters and borehole extensometers are used to monitor mining-induced stress change and deformation, respectively, in long-term support pillars. Data from these instruments indicate that when ore-bearing pillars were mined, stress was redistributed from support pillars to a backfill panel pillar. The data also indicate that the backfill and support pillars have remained stable for two years after pillar extraction was completed in the area. This research demonstrates the importance of using reliable instruments to document the geomechanical behavior of pillars and backfill. Gaining a better understanding of roof support and stress redistribution mechanisms is a fundamental part of NIOSH's goal to reduce and/or predict rockfalls, which are still among the leading causes of injuries in metal/nonmetal underground mines.

Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized longwall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3D™ seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis.

With ever-increasing global demand for mineral resources, numerous mines are moving towards developing and mining deeper, more complex and lower grade ore bodies. In many cases, mass mining methods (e.g. block caving) are being considered to deal with deeper, lower grade deposits. The body of practical knowledge, however, related to the impacts mass mining methods have on the surface environment in terms of rock mass response, subsidence, etc., is limited, imposing both economic risks to the mine and safety risks to mine personnel. This paper presents the framework for and preliminary results from a large collaborative research initiative between Diavik Diamond Mines, Rio Tinto, the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The project involves the integration of available subsidence, rock mass, mine operation and monitoring data, together with the advanced application of combined finite/discrete-element modelling codes capable of simulating fracture behaviour, cave propagation and surface subsidence above block cave mines. The main objective of this work is to develop advanced numerical modelling methods to characterize complex rock mass behaviour above block cave mines. The research will also include the study of rock deformation mechanisms associated with the transition from surface to underground mining and the potential interaction between simultaneous open-pit and underground mining operations.

The development of a tool for assessing the environmental sustainability of mining facilities is described in this study. The tool is based on the analysis of basic components of the examined system, i.e., the quantities of the incoming materials and outgoing wastes, their hazardousness and scarcity, the utilization of water and energy resources, and the biodiversity. The developed tool provides both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the environmental performance of a mining facility in a broad time scales (past-present-future) and is easily applicable from non environmental experts. Moreover, relative software is developed to further support the application of the methodology. The implementation of the tool is expected to lead to an improved understanding of the environmental performance of a mining facility and more importantly identify the areas of significant environmental concern. However, based on feedback from industries, a number of shortcomings of the approach have been identified so far and are presented, indicating further actions for the advancement of the proposed tool.

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on utilization and disposal of solid wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's Solid Waste and Materials Recycling Program is directed toward four main areas of research, development, and demonstration: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) utilization and stabilization of mine, mill, and smelter wastes; and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. A contract and grant program that supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of manpower in management of mineral-, metal-, and energy -based solid wastes is also discussed. This publication is an updating of Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8460 issued March 1970.

"During the fall of 2001 a program was initiated to determine the feasibility of improving the metallurgy in the flotation circuit at the Penhorwood Talc Concentrator located near Timmins, Ontario. Bench scale testwork led Plant staff to believe that opportunities existed to improve the flotation performance. Pilot scale testing was then conducted using two vendors and their respective cylindrical type flotation cells to indicate where these opportunities existed.The results of the test program determined that the replacement of the existing flotation circuit (roughers, scavengers and cleaners) with new flotation cells could be economically viable. Justification was due to a reduction in installed horsepower, maintenance costs and a subsequent increase in recovery and throughput while maintaining product quality. Unforeseen benefits included reagent and air reduction, accurate level control as well as improved working conditions due to the removal of the antiquated equipment and ancillaries.This paper will detail the justification, installation and implementation of the new flotation circuit. A special emphasis will explain the hurdles encountered while trying to install and commission the circuit in an operating Concentrator with minimal interruptions to production.INTRODUCTIONThe Penhorwood mine and Concentrator is 28 yrs old and has gone through many ups and downs with different owners, Johns Manville, Steetley Talc and now Luzenac. It has also been expanded twice, with flotation and grinding capacity being added in recent years.All of the concentration is completed at the mine site while the fine grinding takes place in the Timmins micronizing plant.Luzenac’s Philosophy is to be the world leader in Talc production, technology and sales, having about 70% of the current world High Grade talc market."

Risk lies at the heart of all mining and nowhere more so than in pit slope design. Mining is principally about two areas of risk; safety and economics. This paper addresses the main elements of pit slope design and presents a view of the state of the art in terms of safety, design, prediction of performance, success and pit slope management. There has been a recent trend for serious injury and fatalities due to stability in open pit mines. The causes and contributing factors are analysed in relation to geotechnical knowledge, pit slope design and management. Currently there is no standard classification system for mine slope designs and it is considered doubtful if a universal system is possible. Designs are usually formulated in accordance with many different methodologies, various engineering principals and a number of different philosophical approaches, with results often presented in terms of Factors of Safety or Probabilities of Failure. However wide experience has demonstrated that even with apparently detailed engineering investigation and analysis at Feasibility Level, at the Operating Stage mine slope angles are regularly subject to large changes. The general experience is that these changes are ± 5° and 16° overall, which is considerably outside the accepted order of accuracy. For large deep mines these are huge changes and represent significant risks to the operations.
