The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Toe -Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately 111. 20 to 45° E. The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1928, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting. The total oil production for the Salt Flat field to and including September, 1930, was 19,833,215 barrels. The most reliable figures available of water production were compiled for a number of leases and wells in the south half of the field. These data show that the water percentage for the average well in this part of the field increased steadily from 30 per cent for January, 1929, to 81 per cent for December, 1929. The estimated daily water production of the entire field for December, 1929, was about 82,000 barrels as compared with a daily oil production of 29,725 barrels; or approximately 2.7 barrels of water were produced with each barrel of oil 14 months after the discovery well was completed in the Edwards pay. Estimates of water production in the (Old) Luling field, which is near the Salt Flat field, place the daily water production at about 150,000 barrels (July, 1929) as compared with a daily oil production of 11,000 barrels. These figures indicate that in the Luling field approximately 14 barrels of water must be lifted for each barrel of oil produced. The Luling field was discovered in August, 1922, and a peak annual production of 10,210,000 barrels was reached during 1924. The production during 1928 was 5,057,000 barrels of oil from an average of 567 producing wells for the year. Although water appeared early in the life of the Luling field, the oil production has been well sustained. Another feature of outstanding interest is the comparatively few producing wells that have been abandoned on account of water during the soven years of operation of this field. Comparison of data between the Luling and Salt Flat fields is of importance because of the nearness of the two fields. The Luling field is a narrow strip or "shoestring" approximately 8 miles long, with a maximum width of 3,400 feet. Production is obtained in the Edwards limestone at an average depth of 2,200 feet on the upthrow side of a fault. Similar conditions of accumulation are found in the Salt Flat field at greater depth to Salt Flat field as outlined (April, 1930) is about 7 miles long? with a maximum width of 2,000 feet. At the time the field work was begun (July, 1929) in the Salt Flat field, drilling operations had been almost completed in the south half of the field, while the north half was still under development. Cross sections and a structure contour map interpret the subsurface conditions in the south half of the field, where the water conditions first became serious.

The stringent marketing specifications included in coal contracts mean that coal producers must supply cleaner and more consistent coal than may have been formerly required. Geostatistics has the potential to aid in the accurate estimation of the washability characteristics of coal. A prediction method, the Kriged Service Variable Approach has been developed.A Computer Aided Drafting and Design system has proved useful in the development and application of the approach. The geostatistical approach has been tested against coal geological and borehole data and applications discussed.

As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

The paper examines the role of chain pillars in longwall mining layouts as used in several countries. The application of chain pillars in relation to their expected design role is discussed. An important feature is the specification of the pillar design to meet strata loading conditions as imposed by the mining and geological setting. The paper relates longwall width and chain pillar configurations to pillar size to satisfy anticipated loading and strength expectations. Laboratory work is referred to which examines criteria for pillar stability. Comments are made regarding the application of the findings presented in the paper, to different situations involving the use of chain pillars in longwall and shortwall mining systems.

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data- Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The oil shale data bank listings are the result of a team effort of the project staff. The contributions of Jimaleen Jansma for keypunching, information acquisition, and data entry, and John Brandenburg and Sandra Brake for keywording and information acquisition are gratefully acknowledged. In most coal preparation processes, water is a necessary medium, but the presence of water in coal after it has been cleaned has a negative impact on transportation costs, handling and specific energy values. The utilization of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in the nappy application is well known. The concept of utilizing these polymers was investigated for the purposes of dewatering coal and other fines, generated by preparation processes such as flotation. SAPs are granular highly cross-linked synthetic copolymers with excellent water-absorbing properties. The dewatering process is characterized by three main stages: (a) contact of super absorbent polymer with high-moisture fine coal; (b) separation of dewatered fine coal from super absorbent polymer; and (c) regeneration of used super absorbent polymer, by exploiting its response to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. Preliminary tests showed the separation step to be very difficult. The novel idea of encasing a given amount of polymer in a water permeable cloth solved this problem (of separating the swollen polymer from the dewatered coal). Preliminary tests investigating the effectiveness of the sachets of polymer showed a drastic decrease in the moisture contents of slurries. Furthermore, it was shown that it was possible to regenerate the polymer (still within the sachets) through thermal drying. A full-scale experimental programme was then followed to accurately determine the feasibility of using sachets of SAP. The experimental variables were initial slurry moisture content and polymer dosage. It was observed that the sachets seemed to work fastest and most effectively at high moistures and also at higher dosages of SAP. Regeneration of the polymer was also investigated, using two methods: thermal regeneration and pH-induced regeneration. The experimental variables, for investigating the regeneration process, were method of regeneration and grade of water used. Thermal regeneration at 70°C seemed to work successfully. Although the cost of using thermal energy is still a problem, the safety aspect (fire hazards) has been addressed since the polymer does not ignite when heated, unlike fine coal particles that may do so. The alternative method of regeneration, which exploits the pH-sensitivity of the polymer, was less successful, and further work needs to be conducted.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. An avalanche is a snow slide. A simple explanation is that the snow on a slope will slide (avalanche) when the snow strength can no longer support its own weight. Snow avalanches happen when the load from snowfall or ram on a snow slope increases faster than the stre n g t h of the bonds between snow crystals. Avalanches can also happen when the strength of a buried layer decre a s e s . Active avalanche control is the intentional triggering of slides. Washington State Department of Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n (WSDOT), does avalanche control to minimize the chance of natural avalanches into traffic. Avalanche control work is done all over the world by: highway departments, ski resorts, railroads, mining operations, utility companies, and other activities threatened by avalanches. The majority of active avalanche control is done with skis, by explosives, or exploding projectiles. Blasting techniques and practices have evolved to fit the specific needs of avalanche contro l . Passive avalanche control is the use of engineered s t r u c t u res such as snow sheds, bridges, or snow supporting devices, to permanently protect a specific location from avalanches. The problem is that these struct u res are extremely expensive. There are a variety of passive avalanche control measures as well as the active m e a s u res used to protect the highway over Snoqualmie Pass. As traffic volume and use expectations incre a s e , m o re extensive passive measures will be needed to keep avalanches from affecting the highway.

The implementation of effective techniques for meeting the maintenance requirements of the new Utah Copper Division smelter, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere, is a goal of the smelter management and supervisory personnel. Kennecott's Metal Mining Division Computing Center has been working with smelter personnel to implement a computer program to provide instantaneous access to equipment specifications, maintenance and cost histories, spare parts, preventive maintenance scheddes, etc. for several hundred pieces of equipment. This information will be available to all smelter personnel via visual display terminals. The system will dramatically reduce the time now spent in search of pertinent information required in effectively performing the maintenance functions. It will also be used to analyze practices, detect trends, prepare budgets, and substantially reduce the paper work normally associated with the running of a large and complex maintenance organization.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

The electrochemistry of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was investigated at a variety of electrode materials in different supporting electrolytes. A portable detector for carbon monoxide was developed using a porous gold anode in perchloric acid supporting electrolyte. This detector has two full scale ranges, 0-100 ppm and 0-500 ppm. A portable detector for mixtures of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was developed using a porous silver cathode in sulfuric acid supporting electrolyte. Nitrogen dioxide was determined in the gas stream by electroreduction. The nitric oxide in the gas stream was oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by passing it over Cr(VI) on firebrick. Electroreduction gave the sum of NO + N02. Analog circuitry was used to display the amounts of NO and N02 separately. Two ranges were available for each gas. They were 0-10 and 0-50 ppm for NO and 0-2 and 0-10 ppm for N02.

Decision-making regarding plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g per ton of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point, with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

In predicting the integrity of under-mined structures, surface horizontal displacements and curvatures are frequently of greater importance than the more homogeneous vertical displacements. Accurate evaluation of mining induced subsidence and horizontal displacement further requires that the predictive model adequately represents the subsurface geology, mining geometry and extraction sequencing. The following documents an extension of the Subsidence Prediction and System Identification method (SPASID) to the evaluation of horizontal strains. Comparisons are made between predictions from SPASID and two other empirical methods against measured data from a case study. The system identification method is illustrated to predict horizontal displacements and strains most consistently with the in situ data.

On the underwater testing of explosives, the measuring system consists of water filled test pond, tourmaline based pressure sensor, measuring cable and measuring unit, which supplies the DC current to the pressure sensor. Depending on the length of the measuring cable, it is always possible that some signal damping may occur in case the measurements are carried out without the signal amplifier to keep the measuring system as simple as possible. Therefore the length of the measuring cable should always be as short as possible.

New York City contains extensive deep deposits of glacial lake varved silt and clay, often overlain by organic soil. An 18 story building was proposed for Manhattan's upper East Side in one such area where bedrock is approximately 200 ft deep. Various pile and caisson alternatives were considered extending through the glacial lake soil to rock, but all proved beyond the project budget. Laboratory testing showed that the glacial lake deposits were preconsolidated. A test pile program using auger cast piles bearing in the glacial lake deposits proved that such piles could safely carry a load of 60 tons per unit. The auger cast pile scheme was estimated to be more economical than a deep pile alternative. A further benefit was that the vibration-free pile installation procedure posed less risk to adjacent structures which had been founded at shallow depth in fill above organic deposits and were stressed and cracked due to prior settlement. The project was designed with the anticipation that the glacial soils beneath the tips of the piles would produce a building settlement of 1 to 2 inches. The building was constructed in 2001 and 2002. It has been completed and is now occupied. Settlement data show that the building is performing as predicted. The auger cast pile scheme founded in a compressible stratum has proven to be successful and is a very unusual foundation alternative.

The selective placement of coal stripmine overburden is examined. Physical and chemical properties of spoil detrimental to revegetation and groundwater are detailed. The United States is divided into regions or similar problems. Five mining methods already used in the industry, that are capable of selectively handling waste are examined in detail. Technical and economic comparisons are made for the systems when applied to realistic mine settings. The same analysis is conducted for five novel methods capable of selectively handling waste. Comparisons are made between novel and existing methods. Suggestions for new and modified equipment are outlined. Recommendations for further research are provided. This volume contains all Appendices to the report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the mineral resources of the United States. This is done to ensure an adequate supply of minerals essential to a viable domestic industry and a sound economy. The United States is almost totally dependent on foreign supplies for a number of minerals such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, and manganese for which there is no available substitute, while many other minerals such as titanium are abundantly distributed throughout the earth but seldom occur in adequate concentrations or useful forms. This report describes an example of a small but high-grade occurrence of titanium are in Nelson County, VA. This occurrence could be exploited under favorable economic conditions with new mining technology such as borehole slurry mining. The report demonstrates that the dikes at titanium ore, a mixture of ilmenite and apatite locally termed nelsonite, can be detected and traced along strike using magnetometer traverses. This information will aid in the selection of appropriate slurry borehole mining test sites in the area.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resource potential of the Log Cabin Saddlebag, Hall Natural Area, Horse Meadow, and Tioga Lake RARE II areas in Mono County, California. These areas, along the east slope of the Sierra Nevada, are underlain by Paleozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Log Cabin Mine and Saddlebag Lake roof pendants. The roof pendants are in Cretaceous granitic rocks. Pleistocene volcanic flows cap some of the older rocks, and glacial till and outwash locally cover the bedrock. The region was eroded by alpine glaciers. Four parts of the Log Cabin Saddlebag area have moderate gold and silver resource potential. Moderate potential for gold and silver resources was identified in one part of the Hall Natural Area and low potential for tungsten and molybdenum in two other parts (fig. 1).
