The cost of corrosion as measured by such cost components as the renovation or replacement of coated steel, or the use of expensive coating systems on steel, is considerable. Extrapolating from figures for the USA would place the overall cost of corrosion for South Africa as a figure of the order of magnitude of something over 1% of the GNP. This is a sizeable amount, of which costs associated with atmospheric corrosion would be a significant proportion. The corrosivity of an atmosphere can be defined as the ability of the atmosphere to cause corrosion in a given metal or alloy (International Standards Organization [1]). The ISO Standard 9223 specifies the key factors in the atmospheric corrosion of metals and alloys, and defines categories of corrosivity on the basis of these factors. Prior to the publication of that ISO standard, Callaghan published the results of his twenty-year exposure programme and his excellent corrosivity map of Southern Africa [2]. The present author published updates of the corrosivity map in 1999 [3] and again in 2003 [4]. The summary of the individual areas of corrosivity around Southern Africa was published in the latter paper, and is reproduced here as the following TABLE 1. Of significance in TABLE 1 are the numerous regions of very high corrosivity (C5 or beyond), particularly the rural West Coast shoreline, the North East Coast (KZN) shoreline, and the coastal cities Cape Town, Durban and Richards Bay. The corrosivity map as published is obviously based on much extrapolation as only a small number of points have been measured. During the past three years further measurements have been made, mostly however at the same sites in order to give greater reliability and to monitor long-term trends with changes in pollution. These two aspects are incorporated in this update. There has become available a greater amount of air pollution data for centres in South Africa than was the case some years ago. In this present paper the pollution data are used to extrapolate the corrosivity over areas where little or no direct corrosivity measurement has been made. This methodology is described in ISO 9223.

A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise induced hearing. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard Seco S215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock shavings, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Penetration rate was somewhat improved compared to that of the standard drill, so that productivity could be maintained. Keywords: Drill, rock drill, quiet, noise, mine, underground.

Introduction Abandoned mill tailings deposits can be found throughout the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, indicative of mining activities that originated during the great gold rush days of 1875. The Refuse Act of 1899 attempted to regulate the deposit of debris from mines and stamp works. But, in most cases, huge volumes of mine and milling wastes were disposed of in ways no longer considered environmentally acceptable. Restoration of gold mill tailings deposits is a relatively new practice to the Black Hills area. This discussion will present an overview of the environmental setting, environmental problems associated with past tailings disposal practices, practices being implemented to solve these problems, and prospects related to present the future tailings disposal practices. Environmental Setting An understanding of climatic characteristics, geology, surface and ground water hydrology conditions, and the physical and chemical characteristics of selected mill tailings deposits will aid in understanding environmental problems associated with tailings disposal and restoration. "Many concentrators use re-circulating “plant” water for dilution in their flotation circuits. However, if crusher dust suppressants, ball mill grinding aids, or even agitator bearing grease are introduced into this water, and the water itself is not subject to cleaning steps, then sufficient quantities of these chemicals may appear in the flotation cells and begin to impact the flotation separation. A bench flotation procedure has been coupled with statistical analysis in order to estimate the impact of small quantities of non-flotation chemicals on flotation performance.INTRODUCTIONCleveland Cliffs produces iron oxide pellets for blast furnace feed, and is developing the capability to produce ferrous metallic products to supply a wider customer base. Cliffs manages five North American iron mines, including the Wabush mine sites in Labrador and Quebec. Based on various characteristics of the ore bodies, the flow sheets of the five mines are diverse. For example, Hibbing Taconite uses magnetic separation alone as their primary upgrading method, but Northshore and Empire use magnetic separation followed by flotation, and Tilden uses flotation alone. Last but not least, the Wabush concentrator upgrades primarily with gravity and electrostatic separation techniques.At Northshore, concentrate from the magnetic separator circuit is fed to a reverse flotation circuit. By design, the magnetic separators operate at the highest possible recovery of magnetite, as the separator tails are discarded, and relatively high silica content was acceptable to Northshore’s customers. As the steel-making industry moved toward lower and lower slag volumes, the silica content in the magnetic separator concentrate became a problem. The flotation step was added in the late 1980s in order to decrease the silica assay of the magnetic separator concentrate to meet the current customer requirements. In this setting, the flotation feed stream contains very little silica that occurs as liberated quartz particles. As the degree of liberation of the flotation feed stream is then a limiting factor for silica removal, the online grind control then was linked to flotation in the overall plant control system so that grind can be adjusted to achieve improved liberation if necessary for the flotation process."

The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

In salar-type deposits, lithium grades can be measured by bailers introduced at different elevations in the drill holes at locations where, later, the brine will be pumped out to recover the metal. When they are duplicated, these a priori rudimentary measurements may show large differences without indicating whether this is due to the procedure itself or to some physical causes linked to the dynamic behaviour of the salar (seasonality, rainfall, underground flow etc). In the reservoir presented in the paper, the problem is complicated by the double lack of stationarity of the lithium grades: the grades not only increase importantly with the depth but at the same time their fluctuations decrease, making it necessary to use non-stationary geostatistical techniques to simulate them. Reservoir simulation is developed in two steps: first, geostatistical simulations of the lithium grade create possible realisations of the reservoir; then, each geostatistical simulation is followed by a pumping simulation that calculates, at each drill hole of a given extraction scenario, the lithium produced each year over 40 years. For the set of 100 simulations produced in this way, a scenario reduction is made to choose the five most representative simulations where more complex calculations will be carried out (for example, changing hydrogeological parameters such as porosity and permeability, or the elevation of the filters, the number and the location of the pumping and the reinjection drill holes etc). The paper first presents an analysis of the geostatistical model sensitivity to the grade uncertainty when measured by bailer. Among the 100 measurements at our disposal covering the future production domain, 50 per cent are duplicates measured at the same place but at different times. They are randomly sampled to produce five subsets of 75 values, which will constitute the future 3D conditioning points for the geostatistical analysis and the simulations. For each subset, trend, standard deviation and variogram models are fitted, leading to five sets of 20 geostatistical simulations of grades. In this way, the reliability of the different parameters involved in the procedure is evaluated, as well as its impact on the pumping results. Then, a reconciliation study is conducted between the non-stationary nugget effects encountered in the 3D variograms of the lithium grade and a pure statistical analysis of 25 duplicates measured at different locations and/or different times. The result is that if the nugget effect reaches 20 per cent, which is the case of three conditioning subsets out of five, the reconciliation is good and the nugget effect of the variogram model represents the bailer uncertainty, ie the measurement error. Since the geostatistical simulation incorporates a nugget effect, it handles the bailer uncertainty and the impact on the produced metal is included in the evaluation. The final conclusion is that, after the hydrogeological pumping simulations, the initial differences between the five geostatistical models do not influence the final results: lithium grades measured by bailers can lead to a robust evaluation of the extractable resources, a conclusion that conflicts with conventional wisdom.CITATION:Séguret, S A, Goblet, P, Cordier, E and Galli, A, 2017. "Statistics show3 that in 1927 the United States consumed 60 per cent of the world's production of chromite and produced none. The uses of chromium are rapidly expanding, and a dependable supply is essential to our industries. Since the political and commercial control of our supply of chromite is now in foreign hands it is prudent to determine how this nation can best prepare to supply its need for chromium if the imports were cut off or restricted and whether it is now possible and desirable to stimulate production of chromium from domestic deposits. We have only small amounts of chrome ore of high enough grade to meet present trade requirements. Therefore the Bureau of Mines is making a study of methods for beneficiating our low-grade ores.Chromite (Cr203.Fe0), is the only commercial source of chromium. For refractories, a minimum of 40 per cent Cr203 and a low silica content (5 to 8 per cent) is usually specified. In most instances bricks or lumps having a physical structure that will not crack when heated are required. The only way an inferior ore could be adapted to this use world be to concentrate it and develop a satisfactory binder to make bricks out of the concentrates.For making ferrochrome the requirements are a minimum of 45 per cent Cr203 and an iron content not exceeding one-third of the chromic oxide. On some low-grade ores gravity concentration will give a product meeting these requirements; other ores yield concentrates containing too much iron or other impurities to be saleable."

Air blast associated with detonation of explosives in mining, construction or military applications is often responsible for complaints by people who live or work in the vicinity of the activity. Most often, the complaints are based on the perception that vibration caused by the airblast damaged one or more residential buildings that may be located within several hundred feet or several miles from the blast site. The potential for airblast to cause damage is related to the amplitude and frequency of the airblast overpressure wave at the receptor. Amplitude and frequency of the overpressure wave are, in turn, dependent upon the type and amount of explosive detonated; the degree of confinement; the distance the wave travels; the topography between the blast site and the receptor; and, atmospheric conditions. It is well known that, as the result of atmospheric focusing, the amplitude of airblast overpressure that exists relatively far from the blast site may be substantially higher than the amplitude associated with the attenuated wave in an isotropic atmosphere. Two methods are available to predict baseline overpressures 1) the Sandia Laboratories, Atomic Energy Commission method as extended by the Naval Ordinance Laboratory (NOL method) and the Ballistic Research Laboratory method (BRL method). These methods are developed by different techniques, are based on different idealized atmospheres and predict widely different results. The amplification factor applied to account for the effect of focusing must be consistent with the method used to predict the baseline overpressure. Theoretically, the amplitude of the overpressure at distances several miles from the blast site could be more than 25 to 100 times the amplitude of the attenuated wave predicted by the BRL method. However, based on comparisons with measured overpressure data is probably less than approximately 3 times the amplitude of the attenuated wave as predicted by the NOL method. This paper is based on research conducted as part of investigations of airblast damage complaints associated with an accidental explosion near Eveleth, Minnesota and with the disposal of military explosives by detonation at the Sierra Army Depot near Herlong, California. The techniques available for estimating the airblast overpressure that might be generated at various distances from the blast site and criteria for evaluating the potential for damage are examined.

A resource document, prepared for the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines, which outlines aspects of occupational health and safety in the Canadian metallurgical industry has been expanded to provide examples of some practical solutions. General process descriptions are provided in conjunction with some of the major potential hazards associated with each step. Emissions to the working environment, particularly around converters, are discussed. Newer metallurgical processes, the role of automation and other advances in the metallurgical industry are described with respect to their impact on the work place. The role of staff and unit employees in providing safe working conditions in the complex metallurgical plant of today is outlined and the need for close cooperation within the human sector emphasized. The technology is available and is being applied to integrate the complex process requirements with realistic regulations to control emissions and provide a safe, healthy environment in metallurgical plants.

No entanto, ainda não existe um consenso na literatura com relação à influência das características morfológicas destes implantes na osseointegração, principalmente na definição da melhor rugosidade e energia superficial. Vários trabalhos têm sido realizados com o intuito de comparar diferentes tratamentos superficiais empregados para otimizar a adesão, o crescimento e a proliferação celular. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma base de dados sobre características superfícies versus osseointegração para experimentos de biocompatibilidade realizados in vitro. Foram feitas coletas e análise de dados qualitativos usando métodos analíticos em artigos científicos publicados em periódicos internacionais, sendo considerados na pesquisa artigos que utilizaram superfícies de Ti/TiO2 e células osteoblásticas. Os principais atributos definidos para a base de dados foram rugosidade, tamanho da célula, energia da superfície e/ou ângulo de contato, tipo de tratamento superficial, viabilidade e a resposta observada na cultura celular. Espera-se que esse artigo contribua para que futuros trabalhos possam utilizar métodos e estudos que permitam auxiliar na descoberta de conhecimento através de padrões que acelerem o processo de osseointegração impactando diretamente na recuperação do paciente implantado e na sua qualidade de vida.

A process for the recovery of cobalt from a speiss produced at Sulphide Corporation is presented. The speiss is leached in oxygenated sulphuric acid to dissolve the metallic iron at a pH of around 4. The resultant iron (11) is subsequently oxidized in the leaching vessel and precipitates as goethite. Acid is regenerated in the precipitation allowing dissolution of further speiss. Subsequent to the conversion of most of the iron in the speiss to goethite, conditions become sufficiently oxidizing to dissolve cobalt. Cobalt is not co-precipitated under the leaching conditions, yielding a pregnant solution containing the cobalt and some iron (11). The principal advantage of such a process is the significantly lower acid consumption over that obtained by complete dissolution followed by selective precipitation. An impure product of cobalt hydroxide can be obtained from the pregnant solution by neutralization.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a simple fire-retardant treatment for wood. The treatment involves preheating the wood surface at high heat flux (~0.6 cal/cm2 sec) to form an in situ surface char layer (~3 mm thick) on the wood. Laboratory-scale fire tests show that the precharring technique improves the fire-resistance of virgin wood by decreasing and delaying generation of volatile gases through thermal insulation effect of the surface prechar layer.

Emulsion explosives have become the product of choice for many blasting applications and are not limited to just extreme wet hole conditions or special application environments as in the past. Today’s novel emulsion technology has evolved over many decades, allowing a great diversity of formulations, Emulsion explosives can be effectively designed to produce very high energies, cap sensitive high explosive cartridges to bulk blasting agents, with varying viscosities, stable VOD’s, excellent water resistance, long shelf life and sleep time. They are also conducive to the mixture of emulsion, An/F0 blends in varying proportions and are amenable to any type of sensitizer. The key to a stable, reliable and consistent emulsion formulation is the careful mixing of the internal phase, which consists of a solution of oxidizer salts suspended as microscopically fine droplets, with the surrounding continuous fuel phase. There are few blasting applications today where some form of an emulsion explosive cannot fit the application. In massive, hard rock, dense, tightly jointed and fine grained rock types, the emulsion explosives are the best choices in creating new fracture networks for good fragmentation with a few alternatives. In such environments, emulsions with expanded drill patterns often result in better economics than the use of straight AnLFo. This paper will cover emulsion formulations, sensitizing options, product testing, material handling, and blast optimization, Emulsion explosives characteristics have also proven to reduce adverse environmental effects such as noxious fumes, ground vibration, and airblast while still remaining cost effective.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. THIS paper is a description of the milling practice and metallurgy at the Moneta Porcupine mine, Timmins, Ontario. The results obtained with an all-cyanide circuit and later with flotation followed by cyanidation are described. The ?investigation which prompted the various changes in milling practice have also been dealt with. Moneta ore is possibly the most refractory now being milled in the Porcupine district. This is due to the ultra fine state in which the gold occurs and to its intimate association with pyrite. No doubt there is ore of similar characteristics on the neighbouring properties but it probably forms only a small portion of the tonnage being mined, whereas at Moneta the bulk of the ore requires an extremely fine grind to liberate the gold. The fineness to which an ore can be ground economically has gone far beyond what was thought to be the limit only a few years ago. Formerly, a set of standard screens was all that was required to measure the fineness to which an ore was ground. At present, the Haultain infrasizer is practically indispensable, and the nominal micron has become a familiar unit of measurement to all those dealing with the problems of fine grinding.

Continued population growth combined with limited water resources in the Denver area has resulted in the conversion of a number of mined out gravel pits in the area into municipal water storage facilities. The use of slurry walls provides a cost effective means of isolating groundwater to convert these pits into efficient water storage facilities. Design considerations include: stability, underlying bedrock conditions, backfill mix design and earthwork requirements. Installation issues during construction include: trench stability considerations when excavating through relatively clean sand and gravel deposits in potentially high groundwater conditions; keying into three to ten feet of fractured claystone, siltstone or sandstone that makes up part of the Denver formation, and quality assurance procedures to assure a proper groundwater barrier is constructed.
