The effects of compositions and firing temperatures on the physico-mechanical properties of blended Nsu fireclay and Nkalaha redbrick clay have been investigated. The clay samples were compounded according to the following ratios: 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10 in the order Nsu: Nkalaha respectively, and test samples made and fired at 9000C, 10000C 11000C and 12000C. The properties tested for were the modulus of rupture, porosity, shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption and bulk density. From the results obtained, it is inferred that the blends have a maximum service temperature of 11000C, with the 30: 70 blend presenting the best characteristics. A conclusion is drawn to the effect that the blend could be adapted for the production of ceramic earthenware, electrical porcelain pin insulators, cement manufacture and for refractory linings where temperature requirements are less severe.

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, auxiliary equipment, copper slag launders Pyromet has designed copper launders for tapping slag. What makes Pyromet?s launder design innovative and safe is that it does not have any cooling water channels underneath the launder runner, whilst achieving effective cooling of the runner. If matte burn-throughs were to occur through the launder runner, the risk of damaging water channels and the risk of explosions are reduced. In addition, since the cooling water channels are not harmed, the launder is easily repairable and reusable. Pyromet makes use of Finite Element Analysis to optimize the launder geometry to ensure that sufficient energy is removed from the centre of the launder. Factors considered during the launder design include the suitability of the geometry to the client?s needs, experience from existing installations, and ease of fabrication. Pyromet goes so far as to develop procedures for fabricators to ensure that fabrication issues do not compromise the functionality of the launder. When launder orders are received by Pyromet, the entire fabrication process and the functioning of the launders during operations are monitored to ensure that the launder designs are continuously improving with every installation.

A key driver to the success of a tunnelling project (the project) is the management of hydrogeological risk. The hydrogeological risk, if not managed, may cause significant impacts on the overall performance of the project. Impacts may include groundwater quality impairment due to contaminant transport and acid drainage from disturbed geology to groundwater, and groundwater lowering. The groundwater lowering and quality impairment may cause tunnel failure, with consequences such as injury to humans, as well as reduced property and environmental values, potentially costing millions of dollars to sponsors of the project. Depending on the nature of the contaminants and level of hydraulic connection of bedrock fracture along the length of tunnel, the contaminant transport may reduce structural strength of the tunnel due to corrosive action of contaminants such as acid drainage. The groundwater lowering can lead to varying degrees of ground settlement, posing threat of tunnel collapse. The management of hydrogeological risk includes:detection of potential pathways for contaminants into and around the tunnel,identification of factors responsible for the lowering of groundwater, and development of strategic measures to control groundwater lowering and contaminant transport. The paper presents an in-house hydrogeological risk management model named Vedanta-THRM (tunnel hydrogeological risk management). The model uses Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004 (Standards Australia, 2004), Pressure State Response framework developed by Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, and Interaction Matrices. The Vedanta-THRM identifies important characteristics, processes and events of potential hydrogeological risk and develops control measures for managing hydrogeological risk throughout the life cycle of the project. The Vedanta-THRM was applied for a project in the early stages of planning and found to be useful in assessing, evaluating and reducing the hydrogeological risk in a managed approach that potentially increased the performance of the project. The application results also provided management options for use by project sponsors and insurance industry, which included tunnel risk financing options and options for equity investors to choose among various returns under different tunnel credit ratings.

There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. Building stone, cassiterite, kaolin, gold, lime, and peat were the only commodities mined, The country's main economy was in agriculture, primarily in coffee exports. Tribal violence occurred again, between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes, causing an estimated 50,000 deaths, mainly in rural and mining areas. The inflation and a large deficit continued. The country continued to import cement, fertilizers, oil, and petroleum products. Burundi possessed numerous small gold deposits. The northwest and north-east were the country's two most important gold-bearing regions. A large kaolin deposit was found at Ngozi, and its mining was specified in the fifth 5-year development plan for 1988-1992. In the area of Rugombo, limestone was being explored with the intention of opening a cement plant.

Allowable loads on Dynamically-Cast-In-Place Piles (the Franki type) can be correlated with N values from the Standard Penetration Test. Using a constant developed by Nordlund, a conservative value for load-carrying capability of a DCIP pile is developed. The DCIP pile and method of installation is briefly described.

The paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining systems. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins. The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economic and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefit, whilst underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems.

En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la metodología de optimización de procesos de la miina Antamina hasta la oncentradora a través de la recolección de datos de campo, caracterización, modelación matemática y simulación de las operaciones, donde además se utilizan sistemas de rastreamento de minerales y de análisis continuo de imágenes.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to conserve the Nation's mineral resources by developing improved performance materials. Consistent with this goal, the Bureau conducted studies on the formation of undesirable cristobalite in seven different fire clays used as refractories. The studies employed scanning electron micrography, chemical and X-ray analyses, and pyrometric cone equivalent determinations to examine the sample clays and determine the effect of thermal history and stablilizing additives on the amount of cristobalite in various calcines. This research has indicated that as fire clay calcining temperatures increased from 1390° to 1,490° C there was a gradual decrease in the percent of cristobalite present in the calcines and a progressive development of mullite crystallization. No cristobalite was found in fire clays calcined above 1,550° C, but cristobalite reappeared when the calcines were reheated to temperatures between 1,400° and 1,500° C. The research also revealed that additions of lithium fluoride (LiF) prevented formation of cristobalite in fire clay calcines.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. The object of this paper is to make such an interpretation of the copper mineralization of the Mt. "The present study explores the reactivity and burnability of cement raw mixes containing fired red or white ceramic tile wastes or combinations of the two as alternative raw materials. The results showed that the new raw mixes containing these wastes are technically viable. The reactivity and burnability of the new raw mixes have been evaluated; confirming very good results when the particle size of wastes was less than 90 µm. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of the new clinkers were comparable to clinker manufactured with conventional raw materials. The mix of red and white ceramic tile waste was found to perform as well or better than each type of waste separately, a promising indication that separation of the two would be unnecessary for these purposes.IntroductionPortland cement clinker production consumes large amounts of energy (850 kcal/kg clinker) and has a considerable environmental impact. This involves massive quarrying for raw materials (limestone, clay etc), as it takes 1.7 tonnes to produce one tonne of clinker, as well as the emission of greenhouse and other gases (NOx, SO2, CO2) into the atmosphere. Around 850 kg of CO2 are emitted per tonne of clinker produced.The cement industry is looking for solutions to these problems, to attain sustainability and comply with the Kyoto Protocol commitments [1,2]. For that reason, experimental ways are being explored to develop cements whose manufacture is less energy-intensive, less damaging to the surrounding environment and with lower tendency to emit polluting gas. One of the reach this objective is the use of industrial waste and by-products as alternative materials for cement manufacture. Such alternative materials may partially replace fuel [3,4], conventional raw materials [5-8] or clinker in the final composition of the cement [9]."

This report aims to discuss, from the viewpoint of the mining geologist, the bearing of topographic and geologic conditions on cer- tain problems that arose in the construction of the Panama Canal. T+ is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to engineer- ing liters ure because it presents information that shows how geology and topography must be considered by the mining engineer in plan- ning excavations and in removing loose material and solid rock in the safest and most efficient manner. The printing of this bulletin has been approved by the governor of the Panama Canal, as it was impracticable for the Panama Canal to give this information to the general public in any of its publications. The "sword cut" of Goethals and his men did not sever the Isth- mian barrier; it merely clove the hills to a depth of 40 feet above sea level. This cut and the great areas of low valleys at both ends of it have been covered with fresh water to the 85-foot level. This high-level lake held by dams at either end, the 85-foot locks, by which ships enter it, and the dredged approaches from the two oceans constitute the Panama Canal. In the preparation of accurate estimates concerning the cost of large excavations information regarding the geologic conditions, as obtained by a study of natural features, is necessary. Drill holes and test pits will furnish supplementary geologic information, but without a gen- eral knowledge of the geologic conditions it will not be possible for the constructing engineer to answer such questions as the following: (1) What rock units will be encountered in the excavation and in what proportion? (2) What will be the cost of drilling each for blasting (3) How far apart and how deep must the drill holes be to efficiently break the rock of each to the proper size-not too fine nor yet too coarse? In this connection jointing, fissuring, bedding, toughness, and other physical characteristics must be considered (4) How steep will the slopes of the excavation stand, and to what extent will they wash and trench on exposure to the atmosphere? (5) What proportion of the material to be excavated is of such physical character that it may be utilized in any other part of the project, such as in concrete construction, road making, wharves, breakwaters, riprap work, etc.

The following record of the important responsibilities already shouldered by Dr. Ricketts will give some indication of the trust and confidence reposed in him by his colleagues. The Institute is to be congratulated that a man who is already so much engaged should be willing to assume the further responsibility of guiding the Institute's Ship of state during the ensuing year. Louis Davidson Ricketts, who is brother of Professor Palmer or Chamberlaine Ricketts, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was born at Elkton, Md., Dec. 19. 1859, was graduated from Princeton University in 1881 with the degree, Bachelor of Science, chosen a Fellow in Chemistry and W. S. Ward Fellow in Economic Geology, and after two years' study given the degree Doctor of Science. Following the completion of Iris work at Princeton, Dr. Ricketts went to Colorado and started to work as a mine surveyor. For the 15 years following, his time was chiefly occupied in reconnaissance work, geological work and mine examination. From 1887 to 1890 Dr. Ricketts was Geologist for Wyoming, and at, the end of that period transferred his operations to the Southwest. where he has since been steadily engaged in large mining projects. He was identified with the acquisition of the property now owned by the Moctezuma Copper Co., a , subsidiary of Phelps, Dodge & Co., at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. From 1899 to 1901 he was General Manager of the property and during his administration the concentrator and reduction works were completed and the mines put on a dividend-paying basis

Two drilled shaft foundations were subjected to axial load tests in order to measure the influence of drilling fluid on performance. Other than the differing drilling fluids, the shafts were constructed with great care to ensure identical conditions. The results indicate superior performance in both side shear and base resistance of the shaft constructed using a polymer over that of the shaft constructed using bentonite drilling slurry.

1972 constituted the second year of the projected five-year study on constitutive relations of coal. The schedule adhered closely to the five-year outline which is summarized in Table 1. This chapter is intended to serve as introduction and concise synopsis of the year's activities and results, which are presented in greater detail in the following chapters, which have been contributed by the individual researchers in charge of the various aspects of the project under study. Coal Sources, Material Procurement, and Sample Preparation Most of the studies performed during 1972 were done on coal from two sources: the Old Ben Mine #22 in Illinois, and the Bruceton Mine in the Pittsburgh seam of Pennsylvania, which may be considered typical of coal sources of economic importance in the Midwestern and Eastern part of the U.S. These two mines have proven to be reliable suppliers of coal material for our research. We have been able to establish good working relations with their personnel and feel that we can continue to count on their cooperation and help.

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

I would also like to bid a special welcome to all of the international delegates who have travelled to Johannesburg to take part in what surely be a most rewarding session of deliberations. As you come together over next four days, you will have a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and information on strategies and practices for the implementation of sustainable patterns of development. The objectives of this meeting are both timely and far-reaching, as countries around the globe work towards the sustainable use of the world resources. Each of you brings a high level of expertise to these deliberations. I know that you will make the most of this opportunity to address the challenges and opportunities to highlight the most innovative and technologically efficient methods of social protection in order to ensure an increase in the quality of life, health, safety and living environment for the peoples of the Africa. Our country, although endowed with an immense and diverse array of mineral deposits, is perhaps best known in the mining industry for the fact that it is the world’s biggest producer of gold. Although South African gold production has declined over the past years and the industry faces serious problems, it is a myth that the South African industry is moribund. There is a new energy coursing through the South African producers which will ensure their powerful presence for many years to come, based not only on their domestic production but also and probably increasingly on their external operations. Africa features prominently in the latter category.
