Calculation of pile foundations should possibly truly reflect its real work, mainly with respect to the value and distribution of settlements, pile internal forces and bending moments within a slab. Many empirical and theoretical methods serving for an assessment of the settlements of pile group overestimate its actual values obtained from field measurements (see Tejchman et al., 2001). In the paper a simple engineering method for calculation of pile foundations is presented. The method takes into account the interaction between the slab and a soil together with the phenomenon of non-uniform deformation of the soil-pile subsoil, particularly under large foundations. In the method the scheme of the slab resting on one-parameter elastic subsoil is assumed. The comparison of the calculation results for existing pile foundation with the field measurements shows good agreement between those values.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

Open-pit mine planning includes the determination of a long-term open-pit mine production scheduling (OMPS) plan. The OMPS plan is generally a three-dimensional (3D) block extraction sequence that seeks to maximise the net present value (NPV) of future cash flows, while complying with technical and operational constraints. The OMPS problem is computationally complex because it involves the analysis of large datasets, while simultaneously incorporating both multiple hard and soft constraints. The OMPS problem has been solved using deterministic or exact approaches, heuristic, and metaheuristic models. When compared to heuristic and metaheuristic models, deterministic approaches tend to take much longer to solve the OMPS problem when the number of constraints increases. Therefore, this paper presents a metaheuristic model which utilises a genetic algorithm (GA) framework to solve the OMPS problem. The GA-based model was applied to the Newman1 and Zuck Small mining instances, which are publicly available from the online MineLib database. The NPVs for the OMPS plan generated using the GA-based model for the two case studies were compared to the best-known published MineLib solutions obtained using the TopoSort heuristic model at the time of this study. For the Newman1 instance the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$6.6 million for the GA-based solution and US$5.1 million for the TopoSort solution. For the Zuck Small mining instance, the equivalent annual NPVs were approximately US$99.8 million for the GA-based solution and US$102.5 mil for the TopoSort solution. These results show that the GA-based model produced comparable solutions to some of the best-known solutions, thus, indicating strong potential application of GA-based models to solve OMPS problems.

The mines and the mill of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co. are on the east slope of the Eugene Mountains, in Pershing County, Nevada, 8 miles northwest of Mill City, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. and on the Victory Highway. Fig. 1. Supplies and, concentrate are transported by truck over an automobile road of easy grade. The property is at an average elevation of 5500 ft. and climatic conditions are generally favorable for continuous operation throughout the year. The ore treated is supplied by two adjoining mines, the Stank and the Humboldt. Physical and mineral characteristics of the ores produced by these two mines are substantially similar, although variations occur in hardness and mineral distribution.' The economic mineral is scheelite (CaWO4), composed, when pure, of 80.6 per cent tungstic trioxide (WO3) and 19.4 per cent lime (CaO).

In 1985, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 54,480-acre portion of the 93,205-acre Dry Valley Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-615), in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is in Washoe County, NV, and Lassen County, CA, about 35 miles east of Susanville, CA. No metallic resources were identified. The Red Rock and Willow Springs areas contain 85 million tons of altered basalt with zeolite amygdules. This material, averaging more than 50 percent chabazite, constitutes a subeconomic zeolite resource. This zeolite-bearing material would require beneficiation to upgrade it for higher value uses. Natural zeolites have a small market in the United States, which is presently supplied by other higher grade material. There is low probability that these resources will be mined in the foreseeable future. The Capricorn claims, adjacent to the study area, are on alluvial sediments containing more than 30 percent montmorillonoid clays. The material is not usable as pozzolan and was not tested for other uses such as absorbency, oil clarification, or insecticide carrier. The term pozzolan refers to a number of siliceous materials which are combined with portland cement to enhance the physical properties of the resultant concrete. The area is remote from market and contains low value material. It is improbable that this occurrence will be mined in the foreseeable future.

Two concentrates from Palabora, in South Africa, containing 0.056-0.068% undesirable Cu and 0.8 or 2.2% Ti, were chlorinated with air:chlorine ratios of 10:1, 15:1 and 20:1 at temperatures between 1 200 and 1 329 K. The resulting volatile chlorides were condensed and the solutions analysed for Cu, Fe and Ti. Recovery of Cu was less than 25% at low temperatures and short reaction times, but at 1 258 K almost all Cu was removed from the magnetite at all ratios of chlorine to air. At higher temperatures, the increased carrying over of iron as FeCl3 could be minimised by decreasing the partial pressure of chlorine. No titanium was detected in the volatile products and the percentage of Cu recovered was independent of Ti concentration in the concentrates, though as a function of Cl2 vol%, more Cu was recovered at 1 200 K from the low-Ti than from the high-Ti concentrate. In a fluidised-bed reactor, Cu recovery was 58-90% and iron carry-over less than 10 ppm

It is commonly accepted that the tension of roof bolts can be used as a measure of the effectiveness of roof support performance in coal bearing strata. The conceptual base for the assumption originates from beam theory. Roof bolt tension acting across the bedding and other weakness planes increases friction, preventing potential separation and slippage within the roof strata and therefore, increases the stiffness of the roof beam between the open face and the rock-mass enclosed within the anchorage. Thus, it is important to monitor roof bolt tension, especially for research purposes, and consequently many measuring systems were developed based on numerous working principles. Research planned by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky required a large number of tension measuring devices of high precision. These were intended to operate reliably in corrosive mine environment over long periods of time. After evaluating the existing systems, it was decided to develop a new type of roof bolt dynamometer which would fulfill the above requirements at minimal Cost. Nearly one hundred such dynamometers were constructed, calibrated and installed in two underground mines. They remained in service for a period of one Year, producing a valuable database for the Project. In this paper the working principle of this new type of dynamometer will be described and technical considerations and samples of the collected data will be given.

The shaft-type ferromanganese smelting furnace (SF) at Mizushima Ferroalloy Co., Ltd. has been in operation since startup in 1985 and is continuing to perform smoothly. Production has been increased from the original design capacity of 270t/d to 350t/d by various operational improvements. As a productivity index of the shaft-type furnace, production of 350t/d is equivalent to productivity of 0.9t/m3/d (daily production/cubic capacity of furnace). Recently, various operational improvements were implemented to achieve productivity of 1.0t/m3/d or higher, including oxygen enrichment operation, increased tapping frequency, maintenance of the throat profile, and operation with small lump coke. The target productivity of 1.0 t/m3/d was achieved in January 2005. This report describes the improvements introduced as part of this high productivity technology.

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. The income of the Institute is derived mainly from dues, advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. Technical and non-technical challenges exist in each mega infrastructure project. It?s no exception to the first US underground PPP Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project in Miami, FL. The POMT will connect two man-made islands, the Dodge and the Watson Islands, under the Biscayne Bay within highly porous limestone formation. Permeability as high as 0.1 cm/sec has been identified. Its 41-ft outside diameter, if constructed, is the largest precast segment lining in the US. Besides its geological and hydro geological challenges and risks, local community influence and impacts have controlled the fate of this project. This paper describes its tender design enhancements and the evolving of its slow advancement in resolving local community issues.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

Coal is increasingly viewed as one of the major fuel resources of this country for the remainder of this century. The need to extract a greater percentage of the coal in a given seam, together with advantages of improved safety, indicates that longwall mining will become more widely used within this time frame. A novel method of mining coal on a longwall face, utilizing high pressure water jets, is herein described. The mining machine proposed will exploit the stress conditions which exist on a longwall panel in order to achieve the required productivity while at the same time reducing respirable dust and methane ignition hazards. The water jets will excavate only the boundary of the extracted seam section, and thus the energy requirement of the machine will be minimized. The action of the machine is similar to that of an existing coal plow, except in that the wedge teeth of the plow are replaced by oscillating high pressure water jets. The machine can, therefore, cut to the depth and at the speed of existing shearer units at equivalent power levels. The removal of impact stresses from the machine will reduce downtime required for maintenance and replacement of picks and lower the load on the haulage motor of the system. The ability of the machine to increase the depth of cut without an increase in horsepower will further improve productivity when transportation systems to remove the greater production are in operation.

The effects of hydrogen on the properties of binary Ti-A1 alloys containing 2.5, 5, and 7 pct aluminum and ternary alloys of the same compositions with added interstitial elements oxygen, nihrogen, and carbon were studied. Aluminum increases the apparent hydrogen solubility of the a-phase, resulting in a marked increase in resistance to impact embrittlement. In the Ti-5Al and Ti-7Al alloys, for example, the addition of 180 and 305 ppm hydrogen, respectively, did not cause embrittlement, while unalloyed titanium was embrittled by as little as 75 ppm. The role of aluminum in increasing hydrogen solubility of the a-phase probably accounts for the excellent hydrogen tolerance of a-ß alloys containing considerable amounts of aluminum. There is some evidence that aluminum retards the rate of hydride precipitation. If so, these alloys may be susceptible to slow-strain embrittlement. UNALLOYED a-titanium is extremely sensitive to small amounts of added hydrogen in that there is a marked decrease in notch properties. For example, as little as 100 ppm hydrogen is sufficient to lower the room-temperature notch-impact strength from over 100 to less than 20 in.-lb.' What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. El proyecto Antakori (Regulus Resources Inc.) está ubicado a 53 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Cajamarca en el distrito minero de Hualgayoc y es parte de la cuenca de los depósitos de Cu-Au-Ag del Mioceno del norte del Perú. Tiene un recurso indicado de 250 Mt con 0.48% de Cu, 0.29 g/t de Au y 7.5 g/t de Ag y un recurso inferido de 267 Mt con 0.41% Cu, 0.26 g/t de Au y 7.8 g/t de Ag (Eggleston et al., 2019). La geología consiste en un basamento cretácico de rocas sedimentarias (formaciones Farrat, Inca y Chulec) intruído por varios diques de pórfido que generan alteración y mineralización tipo skarn con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag y cuerpos de sulfuros masivos. Posteriormente, se desarrolla un sistema tipo pórfido asociado a diques de pórfido cuarzo-feldespato-(biotita) y cuerpos de brechas con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag-(Mo). Sobre las secuencias sedimentarias se depositan rocas volcánicas del Mioceno procedentes del centro volcánico Tantahuatay y son intruídas por diques/stocks subvolcánicos, ambos afectados por una fuerte alteración argílica avanzada con mineralización epitermal de sulfuración alta de pirita-enargita con Cu-Au-Ag-As-Sb. Un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia con mineralización tipo “Carbonate-Base Metal” de Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu, asociado a diques, de pórfido hornblendico constituye el último evento de mineralización en el proyecto Antakori.

An environmental monitoring program was established to assess the baseline of parameters which may be impacted by a research and development hydraulic borehole mining operation. During the baseline program, two aquifers were identified at the borehole site with the overlying sand aquifer being distinct from the ore sand aquifer on the basis of radiological parameters. The direction of flow of groundwater was determined to be north 19° west at a rate of 1.82 feet per year. Tests to determine the effect of backfilling the boreholes indicated that using overburden from the open pit mining operation would not significantly increase the radiological consti¬tuents of the ore sand aquifer. Mining measurements of the- radon flux from the borehole indicated that the actual release rate of 0.035 pCi/sec was several orders of magnitude less than the calculated estimate by the Environmental Protection Agency. Finally, a gamma survey conducted at the site indicated that the terrestrial component of background radiation was consistent with that in areas near uranium deposits. The methodology used as well as the supporting data are given in this report.
