Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

ALL technical men who are planning to visit the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this summer-and all reports indicate that it will be worth visiting-should try to be there during Engineers' Week, beginning June 26. At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Engineers will thus have an opportunity not only to see the Fair at a time when special programs have been arranged for their benefit, but will have the opportunity to meet their professional brothers and to attend technical sessions of direct interest to them. The A.I.M.E. headquarters will be at the Stevens Hotel, and it will be to the interest of every Institute member who expects to attend the Fair at that time to secure his accommodations as promptly as possible. This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil- production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

Antimony ore samples (mean assay 18·7 per cent antimony) from Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough Sounds New Zealand, were tested for upgrading by flotation to a saleable product (60 per cent antimony).The effects of activating agents, collectors, frothers, pH, conditioning time, and particle size on the recovery and grade of a stibnite flotation concentrate were determined using HaIlimond tube and laboratory flotationcell test apparatus. Optimum flotation conditions for the ore were thereby established. A stibnite concentrate grading 63 per cent antimony and an overall recovery of 90 per cent is obtainable in a two-stage process.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. The post-war need to increase coal production promoted an intensive drilling campaign. Ineffectiveness in core recovery inclined the coal industry towards percussion drilling rather than diamond drilling. The Joint Coal Board, recognising the greater potential of core drilling, has actively encouraged improvement in techniques and equipment. One outstanding need was a barrel which, over and above other improvements being achieved, would permit recovered core to be examined before it had been subjected to the increased fragmentation and displacement which to date has been inevitable except in core which has been drilled in solid sticks û as New South Wales coal rarely can be drilled. In conjunction with Triefus Pty Ltd a barrel with a split inner tube has now been evolved, as a result of which, core can be more accurately logged, division in to lengths for analysis more aptly made, any core loss more reasonably allocated to appropriate plies, and a greater percentage of core recovered û of the order 95 per cent and more. The one half of the split inner tube is lifted from the other and the logging completed before the core is disturbed.

This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. This report deals with the feasibility of the use of vocoders as an integral part of a mine electromagnetic voice communication system. Limitations imposed by the nature of the transmission path, background noise and equipment are examined. Some properties of vocoders and apparent advantages of the use of vocoders in a mine communication are discussed. The conclusion is reached that the man-made noise level will ultimately determine the workability of such a system.

The influence of thermal treatments on the grindability of low-grade hematitic iron ores from Michigan and Minnesota was examined in bench-scale tests. Treatment factors were roasting temperature, roasting atmosphere, and ore cooling conditions. Bond ball mill grindability and work indices were used as response indicators in evaluating the condition of the ore. Of the three treatment factors evaluated, roasting atmosphere, which brought about the con version of iron oxides to magnetite, had the most significant effect; roasting temperature had the next most important effect; and cooling condition had the least effect. Optimum grindability was obtained with reduced-quenched products of both ores at 650° C, near the alpha-beta phase transformation of quartz.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system that permits the "soft" soldering of aluminum and aluminum alloys with standard tin-lead solders. The method employs application of a thin nickel-copper-alloy coating to the substrate, which enables the tin-lead solders to wet readily and spread over the areas to be joined. With conventional technology, aluminum and aluminum alloys are extremely difficult to solder because tenacious surface oxide films prevent wetting. With the Bureau-developed method, the aluminum substrate is mechanically or chemically cleaned to facilitate bonding to a minute layer of zinc that is subsequently applied with an electroless zincate solution. The nickel-copper-alloy (30 to 70 pct Ni) coating is then applied electrolytically over the zinc, using immersion cell or brush-coating techniques. Development of acetate electrolytes has permitted deposition of the proper alloy coatings. The coated areas can then be readily joined with conventional tin-lead solders and fluxes. The joints so formed are ductile, strong, and relatively corrosion resistant, and exhibit strengths equivalent to those formed on copper and brass when the same solders and fluxes are used. The method has also been employed to soft-solder magnesium alloys.

IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. To present an elaborate review of the conditions which have brought to a crisis the unfortunate situation in the British coal industry is here unnecessary, but certain of the salient points

An instrument using a gamma-ray backscatter technique for determining the weight-percent incombustibles content of coal dust and rock dust mixtures in coal mines has been built and tested. The unit gives a direct readout in per-cent incombustibles for coal mine dust mixtures containing between 50 and 100 percent incombustibles; calibration of the device requires using a sample of the rock dust employed; this is usually limestone but occasionally dolomite or gypsum. A small americium-24l source is used with a scintillation detector whose output feeds a rate meter. The source-detector geometry used was chosen to reduce the effects of variation in bulk density. Accuracy of the system is within ±3 percent for most mixtures. The instrument is portable and completely self-contained; the rechargeable batteries supply power for 300 to 400 determinations.
