"INTRODUCTION The operators of the Lake Superior district iron-ore mines have made tremendous progress in the past 25 years in the transportation of broken ore from the working places to the surface. This progress has paid divi¬dends in increased production and in lower accident-frequency rates. The trend has been toward more efficient use of mechanical and electrical power and abolishment of many of the backbraking tasks formerly required of min¬ers and trammers.ScopeTransportation of iron ore as described in this paper covers (1) movement from the working place to ore raises by scrapers, shaker,conveyors, and belt conveyors, and, loading underground cars from chutes or-by scraping from loading drifts; (2) underground haulage, which includes underground cars trains, locomotives, and tracks; (3) shaft station's and hoisting shafts, which. Includes dumping cars, storage-pockets; auxiliary storage trenches, and shafts; (4) hoisting, which consists of skips, cages and hoists; and (5) head frames, loading into railroad cars, and stock-pile haulage.The 19 underground iron-ore mines discussed in this paper, situated in the Menominee, Marquette, Gogebic, Guyana, Mesabi, and Vermilion iron ranges of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota., shipped about 9,000,000 tons of iron ore in 1945, which constituted 56 percent of the underground iron ore taken from the Lake Superior district."

W. Johnson (Consultant, Adelaide) : Is there any mineralogical evidence of temperature of formation of the amphiboles and other minerals present in the crocidolite veins and country rocks7.N. A. Trueman: I am not aware of any definite evidence of the temperature of formation of these minerals, but am of the opinion that high temperatures would not be present during crystallization.No evidence from the qUl'trtz, magnetite and hematite of formation temperatures is indicated and, as the carbonate is later than the other minerals it does not supply any data either.According to Miyashiro and other workers who have studied the composition and stability of the glaucophaneriebeckite series, minerals of riebeckite composition are stable over a wide range of P, T conditions. Recent work by W. G. Ernst, of the University of California, indicate that, in the presence of an Fe203/Fe304 buffer, riebeckite and crocidolite are more likely to form at low temperatures. The occurrence of riebeckite-crocidolite as authigenic minerals has been reported from several localities.Dr. MacLeod (Geol. Surv. of W. A.): Recent regional mapping by the Geological Survey of Western Australia has revealed a total thickness of at least 30,000 ft for the Proterozoic sediments in the Hamersley Basin. In this succession the asbestos-bearing beds of the Brockman Iron Formation at Wittenoom are overlain by some 20,000 ft of younger sediments and volcanics. In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Concrete is a mixture of a fine aggregate (sand), a coarse aggregate (gravel), cement, and water. Cement itself is the most expensive of the ingredients but generally amounts to only about 10% of the concrete mixture. Cement raw materials include calcium, alumina, iron oxide, silica, and gypsum. They are heated and chemically changed into clinker "minerals," which are then ground and shipped as cement. Each of the four main clinker minerals-tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite-impart specific strength and compositional properties to the final concrete product. During hydration of the cement, chemical changes produce new minerals that include calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H, the main constituent of hydrated cement paste), calcium hydroxide, and calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate ions, among others. Two main reactions can occur that may be deleterious to concrete. Normal cement pore solutions, in a hydrated cement, contain sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. If these alkali concentrations are too high, they can react with the siliceous aggregate (alkali-silica reaction, or ASR) to form an alkali-rich calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-N+K-S-H), which, upon prolonged contact with water, can expand to crack the concrete. The other deleterious reaction occurs when the mineral ettringite (Ca6A12(S04)3OH12. 26H20) forms after the concrete is hardened (delayed ettringite formation) and cracks the concrete. Many of the concrete bridges and structures built in New Mexico in the past 20 years are in need of replacement due to deterioration. Many others constructed very early on in the century are still sound. By collecting and analyzing samples of both old and new concrete and good and bad concrete, we compared their differences on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. Samples taken from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, drainage canals, spillways, and a railroad-trestle foundation have construction dates that range from 1923 to 1997. They were analyzed by electron microprobe and by petrographic microscopy. Cracks, air voids, and aggregate alteration were primary locations for investigation and analysis. Using the electron microprobe, ettringite was found in voids of most of the samples, both in good and bad concrete. This leads us to believe that ettringite formation is not causing distress in the concrete. There was one exception in which ettringite was found lining a crack. In this instance, ettringite may have the ability to further the cracking and cause distress. No alkali-silica gel was identified with the microprobe. Using the petrographic microscope in cross-polarized light, a light-brown material was observed that lined some of the air voids and cracks; however, exact mineralogic identifications were not made. Although many instances of chalcedony and other deleterious quartz phases were found, no clear evidence of ASR-gel deterioration was present in our samples using these methods. However, positive identification of the ASR gel was made on an in-place concrete near one of our sample sites and in several sample cores using a newly developed chemical test for the soluble potassium ions associated with the gel. The chemical used in this test is sodium cobaltinitrite, Na3Co(NO2)6.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to optimize the design and utilization of mine roof support systems. An objective of these efforts is to evaluate the mechanical and structural responses of various mine roof support systems under simulated load conditions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Underground studies are also made to evaluate the in situ behavior of support structures. The purpose of this report is to document practical applications for longwall face and gate road supports that have resulted from these studies. This report is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual on every aspect of support utilization, but it does provide a comprehensive assessment of practical considerations relating to the mechanical and structural behavior of these support systems. Forty-six recommendations are made to provide assistance to mine operators in the testing, selection, and utilization of longwall face and gate road supports. Many of these recommendations offer innovative solutions to everyday problems faced by mining personnel in the control of ground in longwall mining.

The applicability of the Q-system [Barton et al. 1974] to Australian underground metal mines is discussed with reference to two common design issues: ground support for horizontal mine development, and assessing the stability of bored raises. Installed ground support in mine development is com-pared to empirical estimates using the Q-system and associated support capacity calculations. Data are graphically presented from 59 specially selected sites at 15 contributing mines. The actual performance of large-diameter raise-bored shafts is also compared to empirical stability assessments using a modified version of Q (Qr, after McCracken and Stacey [1989]). Lower-bound Qr values are plotted against raise diameter for 47 selected sites at 23 mines in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The influence on Q and Qr of some geotechnical aspects of the Australian landscape, the dynamic nature of mines (compared to civil construction), and occupational health and safety regulations are discussed. Stability and support assessments that are based just on Q or Qr are not always conclusive. It is often necessary to consider other rock mass parameters, the regulatory environment, and risk issues. These results are interim; further data collection and analysis are required with regard to comparing actual performance versus empirical assessments.

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. The Bureau of Mines conducted batch-?scale tests on a sample of parphyry copper mill tailings as part of a study to determine the feasibility of rutile recovery from this source. The tailings that were tested contained 0.75 percent titanium dioxide (Ti02), with about two-thirds of the Ti02 values occurring as rutile. Mineralogical studies indicated that about one-half of the Ti02 content could be considered recoverable. Beneficiation studies of the tailings showed that best flotation results were obtained when sulfides and carbonates were removed by bulk flotation prior to rutile flotation. Rutile flotation was most effective when a petroleum sulfonate collector was used in an acid circuit. From this basic method of flotation, two alternative procedures were developed. The first procedure was to size and grind the tailings to minus 200 mesh; deslime the total pulp; and then float the sulfides, carbonates, and rutile. The second procedure was the same, except that it did not include sizing and grinding. Flotation of the sized and ground tailings yielded rutile concentrates containing 43.1 percent Ti02 and 75.7 percent of the recoverable Ti02. Rutile concentrates floated from the tailings that were deslimed but not ground contained only 34.7 percent Ti02 and 69.4 percent of the recoverable Ti02.

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6·2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

La Planta Hidrometalúrgica de Cerro Verde tiene como objetivo alcanzar la máxima calidad en cada uno de sus procesos operativos. Para ello, desarrolla un diseño que permita la transformación del control remoto a una operación automática, generando decisiones lógicas. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de los Sistemas de información de operaciones en el sistema de automatización de Cerro Verde - en tanto es soporte de la implementación de un completo sistema de instrumentación y de la instalación de una red de PLC’s que colectan la información y en base a esta, desarrollan una lógica de operación manteniendo interconectados todos los circuitos operativos. Posteriormente, con el uso de software se crea una interfase de conexión entre la red industrial y la red Administrativa, permitiendo adjuntar la información en una base de datos que junto a la otra base administrativa, constituyen un ERP que da vitalidad a nuestra operación. De forma que los sistemas de informacion instalados en Cerro Verde consideran a los sistemas de instrumentación como los ojos del operador de planta.

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

"Noranda's Goldstream mine is a 1,500 ton per day copper-zinc mine located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C.The orebody which contains 3.69% Cu and 2.69% Zn was discovered in 1972. Construction of the mine and mill was completed in 1982 and start up was achieved in May 1983.This paper will describe the flowsheet and related equipment 1n the crusher and mill, in particular the dewatering section where two Larox pressure filters are used to dry the concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe Goldstrean property is located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. in the Goldstream River Valley (Figure #1). It was discovered during the construction of a logging road in 1972. Exploratory drilling was initiated in 1975, and in 1976 a portal was collared to obtain underground data. Samples were taken from the underground workings for metallurgical bench tests and a pilot plant run.Due to economic conditions, the decision to go into production was delayed until 1980. Concentrator construction and underground development progressed simultaneously during 1981 and 1982, and were completed by the end of 1982. Start up of the concentrator was achieved on May 2, 1983.The ore typically contains about 40% sulphides, which are chalcopyrite 10%, sphaletite 6%, pyrrhotite 20%, and pyrite less than 5%. The sulphide minerals have a high degree of intergrowth. Most of the sphalerite occurs in micron sized grains which are embedded in the pyrrhotite and, to a lesser degree in the chalcopyrite. There is also some fine dissemination of the chalcopyrite in the pyrrhotite. The waste rock is made up of about 30% quartz, 20% guange silicates, and 10% carbonates. The ore has a specific gravity of 3.2 and a natural pH of 8.2."

"Investigations of flotation characteristics of Lumwana and Kansanshi ores using formulated frothers were carried out. Of the six frothers tested, two came from the alcohol family, two from the glycol family and last two were formulated products. The initial work involved determining the optimum mesh of grind and frother dosage for Lumwana and Kansanshi ores. Further work involved carrying out surface tension, bubble size and froth stability measurements. Finally, water recovery tests were conducted at Lumwana and Kansanshi mine sites. For froth stability tests, six frothers were tested on a two-phase (water–air) system using the Bikerman column flotation cell, while water recovery tests were conducted using a total of seven frothers, including the standards for each plant. The results of the testwork showed that (i) although a stable froth is essential for optimum recovery of valuable minerals, a higher molecular weight frother, like Dowfroth 250, caused poor selectivity when used on fine ores and (ii) a lower molecular weight frother was suited for Lumwana ore, while a mid to higher molecular weight formulated product was suitable for Kansanshi sulphide ore. In order to investigate the gangue entrainment levels in the Lumwana and Kansanshi sulphide ores, two well-known methods (froth stability and water recovery) were used. Firstly, froth stability tests were conducted using six frothers, two from the glycol family (Dowfroth 200 and Dowfroth 250), two from alcohol family (MIBC and pine oil) and other two from the formulated family (Betafroth 20 and Betafroth 245), at the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Mineral Research (CMR) laboratories. Froth formation and stability measurements were conducted using the Bikerman column flotation cell."

This paper addresses the need for a method to compare the effectiveness of different support systems when designing ground support in coal mines. At present, support design methods include empirical methods based on observations of past performance of installed support systems, analytical methods where the roof is typically simulated by elastic beams and numerical model analysis. The approach presented in this paper estimates the relative stability of a support design through geotechnical evaluation of the rock mass and numerical model analysis of the interaction between the rock mass and the support system. Models are used first to simulate the design performance at the expected rock conditions. The rock strength is then reduced until collapse is indicated in the model. The stability factor is then calculated as the ratio of the expected rock mass strength to the rock mass strength at the onset of collapse, and is similar to the well-known factor of safety used in engineering practice. The stability factor can be used to assist in developing a final support design by comparing the effectiveness of various support systems and the stability of excavations under various geological and loading conditions. Examples of the method?s application in three different geological settings are presented.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. A device was developed that measures dynamic stress (ultrasonic energy) transfer through installed rock bolts, a measure that is directly proportional to the degree of grout bonding of the bolt to the mine roof structure and thus the ability of the bolt to bear static stress. The rock bolt bond tester (RBBT) is a hand-held portable device that shows three ranges of bolt bond condition; i.e., one-third (Bad bond), two-thirds (marginal), or fully bonded. These are shown respectively by a red, yellow, or green light that displays for 4 s. RBBT performance was verified with 2 1/2-to 8-ft bolts installed in various types 0f mine roof structures (sands tone, shale, and boney coal-mud), and 15 now being tested by the Bureau of Mines in mines across the United States. The unit is about the size of a five-battery flashlight and contains the transducer electronics, and battery pack. The RBBT is designed for extreme ease of operation, requiring only manual contact with the bolt and signal read-out. The batteries are rechargeable and the package is designed for durability in a mine environment.

Mining equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. There are several practices mine operators should consider implementing to preserve their equipment. An exercise in review — Begin by reviewing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations regarding servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. And the verdict is — If the manufacturer’s recommendations have been followed, good. If not, owners/operators should begin periodic service work on equipment, to help minimize equipment downtime and extend engine life.

The discussion which followed the publication of my paper by the formert has, I think, enhanced its value. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bi-polar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world’s shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall. Even with regular ser-vice and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.

The Bureau of Mines Coal Carbonization Laboratory has been interested for the past 20 years in the quality of coke in connection with the selection of coals for the manufacture of coke. The principal experimental. method of carbonization, whereby 100- to 200-pound charges are carbonized in sheet-steel cylindrical retorts with recovery and determination of the properties of coke, gas, and products, was developed in cooperation with the American Gas Association,4 5 and it is known as the BM-AGA method. Results of the investigations of 90 coals included in the BM-AGA Survey of the Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals have been published; 6 and, in addition to these, about 200 coals have been carbonized over limited temperature ranges. Because coke from cylindrical retorts differs in shape from that made in rectangular ovens, the BM-AGA method has been criticized, although those who developed it have always believed that it served well as a means of measuring the relative strengths of cokes from different coals. It is recognized that no laboratory-method carbonization, even on a large twit, can yield results that exactly duplicate those obtained in commercial ovens and retorts. However, with the completion and satisfactory performance of an experimental vertical slot oven of 500-pound capacity at the University of Illinois Geological Survey Laboratory,' the opportunity to directly compare BM-AGA coke with coke made by two-sided heating became available and the necessary test apparatus was installed. The Bureau of Mines slot oven, which is similar to that designed by the University of Illinois Geological Survey, has been used to carbonize 11 coals (or blends) tested by the BM-AGA method. This report compares the results obtained by the two methods.
