Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane, has appointed a commission of five mining and metallurgical experts from the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to visit Europe to observe and study reconstruction methods in the devastated regions of France and Belgium. The chairman of the commission is Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell, chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines. The other members are: George S. Rice, the chief mining engineer of the same bureau; Frank H. Probert, consulting engineer of the bureau, and. professor of mining in the University of California; F. J. Cameron, consulting chemist of the bureau and expert on potash matters; and Hoyt S. Gale, of the Geological Survey, another expert on potash.

Three rock tunnel sewer systems are underway in the Chicago Area. (Figure 1) The three are designed to act independently and to be later connected to the future tunnels of the master plan. The tunnel excavation for each of the systems has been completed. One is in the Northwest area within the City being built by the City, known as the Lawrence Ave. System. Another is in the Southwest suburbs, known as the LaGrange-Brookfield Sewer or Southwest 13A, being built by the Sanitary District, the third is in the South suburbs called the Crawford Avenue sewer or Calumet 18-E, Ext. A- being built as a joint venture between the City and the District. The three are similar in that they have the same purpose, the same component parts and their tunnels were constructed in the nigaran limestone using a mechanical mining machine. The purpose of each of the systems is two-fold. First to provide flood relief for existing inadequate sewer systems, and second to reduce the pollution load to the waterways caused by combined sewer overflows. The existing systems in the areas to be relieved are combined sewers built many years ago. The main outlet for the Village of LaGrange, for example, was built in 1908, is badly in need of repair and lacks the capacity to handle the flood flow from the heavily urbanized area it now serves. Prior to rehabilitation, plant cover on quartz gravel overburden at Wangaloa coal mine was highly patchy. Stabilisation techniques have since considerably altered the condition of the main overburden yet deposits in the east and west remain largely intact. On the eastern overburden, three distinct zones of revegetation have naturally developed: Zone 1 represents a dense plant cover, Zone 2 a patchy cover and Zone 3 a sparse cover of isolated plants. Aerial photographs show much of the eastern overburden was deposited between 1940 and 1960s. Yet we found that the temporal scale of deposition did not wholly account for the differences observed in vegetation development. To investigate other influential factors, we set up 12 study plots using four replicates in each vegetation zone. The diversity and density of plants in each plot were measured to quantify the degree of vegetation development. Samples from the substrate in each plot were collected using soil cores to a depth of 10 cm. Cores were analysed for indicators of nutrient availability, metal content and physical composition. We found that substrate chemistry varied between individual study plots, but showed little difference overall along the vegetation gradient. Substrate physical differences were much greater. The ratio of coarse quartz pebbles: fines was considerably higher in Zone 3 than other zones, and within zones where plants were not growing. Bulk density also increased successively from Zone 1 - 3. We found clear evidence for the reversed stratigraphy of excavation superimposed over the time scale of deposition, and the corresponding nature of fine particles. The rate of revegetation was therefore highly dependent upon the substrate composition of the last surface deposit from the dumping truck. Our data suggests an optimum ratio exists between inert coarse material and a fine matrix for progressive natural vegetation development on mine substrates.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

A comparative characterization of the dimensional and mechanical properties as well as structural aspects of two different types of fibers extracted from the leaves and petioles of the buriti palm tree was performed. A statistical analysis revealed that both types of fibers present a significant dispersion in length and equivalent diameter. However, the corresponding intervals of dimensional variation are sensibly different. The tensile properties showed that both types of fibers display a tendency of higher strength for smaller diameters. Moreover, the fibers extracted from the leaves depict a comparatively lower strength. By contrast, the fibers from the petiole present an average strength sufficiently high for the use as reinforcement of polymeric composites. The structural aspects of tensile-rupture fibers, characterized by scanning electron microscopy, showed marked distinction in the microstructure and fiber behavior of both types of investigated fibers. "The gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) ore characterization test was developed 15 years ago and has been applied to hundreds of ore samples. The test accurately determines the size distribution of GRG, at which grind it is recoverable, and the extent of its liberation above 150 µm. This contribution shows how the test can be simplified, what are the likely problems to occur, and what information is then lost. Two simplified versions of the test are presented, of which the simplest, grinding a 20-kg sample to a P80 of 75 µm, is retained as the best one. A database of 18 comparative tests is presented. The choice of the full GRG test vs. the simple test is discussed, as is the deportment of the GRG recovered in the standard test but not in the simplest test.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was developed in 1990 to characterize the progressive liberation of gold in representative samples of ores, with the primary objective of generating data for a gold gravity recovery model (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al., 2000). Characterization includes the size distribution of GRG as well as the grind size at which it becomes recoverable. This is achieved in a 3-stage protocol of liberation and recovery using a laboratory centrifuge unit, a Laboratory Knelson Concentrator 3 inches in diameter (KC MD3). This protocol is shown in Figure 1. The first stage takes place at a F100 of 850 ?m (F80 of ~550 ?m), the second at F80 of 180 ?m, and the third at a P80 of 75 ?m. The rationale for the three cycles is the desire to preserve the original size distribution of the gold grains in the ore and to obtain a recovery grind size curve. The feed is a representative sample of ore that can be extracted from ore samples (e.g. drill core reject) or stream products of the grinding circuit other than circulating loads or product having undergone hydraulic classification (e.g. rod mill discharge or SAG screen undersize). Ideally the samples should weigh between 60 and 100 kg, depending on feed grade and gold top size. It is beyond the scope of this paper to fully discuss measures of representativity in the ore sample, for example Gy’s minimum sample mass model (Gy, 1979). However, further work in this regard may be an opportunity. The large initial weight facilitates representativity and minimizes weight and sulphide recovery to the concentrate (since concentrate weight is relatively constant at ~100 g), which limits the recovery of gold in nonsulphide gangue or gold carriers (i.e. sulphides). Thus, the 100 g concentrate carries principally discrete gold species, such as electrum, and native gold. The concentrate and a 600-g representative sample of gangue of each stage are screened down to 20 ?m and each size class is fire assayed (the concentrates to extinction, the tails up to 30 g per size class). The five coarsest size fractions of stage-1 concentrate are individually upgraded using a hydrosizer and the concentrates examined with an optical microscope to assess the degree of liberation of the gold phase. Scanning electron microscope work has established that the GRG has an excellent degree of liberation below 150 ?m in stage 1 and generally a good degree of liberation in stages 2 and 3 (Guerney et al., 2003); as a result the size distribution of the GRG has been found to approach closely that of gold grains (Nesset et al. 2005)."

The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

This report presents a study of the Cooper sand of the Fork Run pool of Warren and McKean Counties, Pa., and a prediction of the secondary oil recovery by gasflooding the reservoir. A computer program employing a modification of the Craig, Geffen, and Morse secondary recovery calculation was used to make the gas flood performance forecast and is presented in the appendix. The Cooper sand reservoir in the Fork Run pool lies at a depth of about 1,900 feet and covers an area 1/2 mile wide by 2-1/4 miles long. Original oil in place is estimated to have been 8,266,000 STB. The primary recovery mechanism is solution gas drive, and ultimate primary recovery may reach 20 percent over a well life of 90 years. Two computer predictions were made for gas flooding the Cooper reservoir. The first was for a 25-acre pilot five-spot utilizing existing wells, but project economics were poor since only 25 percent of injection gas is utilized for pilot oil recovery. Recovery was 71,000 STB, or 22 percent of oil in place at flood initiation, but required 25,700 scf gas injected per STB of oil recovered. In the second prediction, pilot area performance was projected for the entire Fork Run pool, and economics became good. Recovery was 1,753,000 STB from 25 five-spots after the injection of only 6,400 scf per STB of oil recovered.

For the 36th consecutive summer, the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation and the Colorado School of Mines have sponsored “A Total Concept of the Mining Industry” for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. Teachers from 34 states, plus the District of Columbia and two foreign countries, have graduated from the four-week course. They received six hours of recertification credit. This summer 31 teachers from Colorado, Kentucky, Virginia and Alaska completed the program. The course is unique from other shorter courses in that it solicits teachers of all disciplines from all K-12classes. In addition to the expected earth science and mathematics teachers, the Class of 2004 consisted of educators who teach music, chemistry, biology, social studies, history, basic English and world history. Others in the program included those who teach American history, physical and life science, remedial reading, consumer/family studies, “world of work,” language arts, engineering technology, environmental science, world geography, human anatomy and physiology, and business.

A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

Red mud residue from Bayer process treatment of Jamaican bauxite was dewatered in batch and in continuous centrifuges. Solids content of the residue was increased from its original value of 20 to 25 percent to about 40 percent by centrifuging. Clear effluent amounting to approximately 40 percent of the slurry liquid was recovered containing dissolved alumina and soda values for potential recycle to the alumina plant" Addition of a chemical flocculant to the centrifuge increased capacity by about 35 percent. Manufacturer's estimate of large-scale equipment requirements, based on data collected in this investigation, was that a proposed installation for dewatering 16,000 tons per day of Jamaican red mud would require twenty-two 24-by 60-inch solid-bowl-type centrifuges. Cost analysis of a proposed installation, based on a Jamaican red mud tonnage of 16,000 per day, is included also.

NuevaUnión SpA (NuevaUnión) is a development project located in the Huasco province of the Atacama region of Chile. It is held in a joint venture company owned 50:50 by Teck Resources Limited (Teck) and Newmont Goldcorp. It includes the Cu-Mo Relincho deposit and the Cu-Au La Fortuna deposit, with plans to utilise a single concentrator to be built at the Relincho site. The Relincho site is at an altitude of 2,000 masl and is 40 km from the La Fortuna site which is at an altitude of 4,100 masl. The project is currently completing a Feasibility Study and is reviewing equipment selection and flowsheet options. This paper is based on the current thinking, and design decisions will be finalized at the completion of the Feasibility Study. NuevaUnión is currently planning for phased operation, processing Relincho ore at 104 ktpd followed by processing ore from La Fortuna at 116 ktpd. Plans for the third phase include doubling the main processing lines and returning to Relincho ore at a processing rate of 208 ktpd. The NuevaUnión concentrator will incorporate comminution and flotation circuits that are being designed to maximize the overall economic value of the combined ore deposits. Major ore characteristics differ between the two ore bodies, such as ore competency, grindability, liberation grind size, pulp rheology, tailings properties, minerals and metals of value, as well as gangue mineralogy. Mineral processing choices have been made to optimise value from each deposit and the combined project. INTRODUCTION Between 2010 and 2013, two significant mining projects were being developed in Chile: Goldcorp’s El Morro project had recently finalized a Feasibility Study and, in 2011, had received its environmental approval for construction; and Teck Resources Limited’s (Teck) Relincho project was finalizing a Feasibility Study and preparing its Environmental Impact Study. Both projects were: Geographically close, at only 40 km apart. Considering similar infrastructure. Each was planning to have its own concentrator, tailings management facility, high voltage power line, port, concentrate transport system, seawater desalination plant and pumping system to mine site.

In heavy mineral sands ilmenite, rutile and zircon are present in economic concentrations. These minerals are important sources of Fe, Ti and Zr for various industrial uses. The beach sands of northern KwaZulu-Natal, along the Zululand Indian Ocean coastline in South Africa, have been mined for 30 years. The various processes involved in mining and processing these minerals have been controlled by time-consuming and labour-intensive analysis methods which, in some cases, can be replaced by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)-Rietveld analysis. Heavy minerals are concentrated in the plant to produce a heavy mineral concentrate (HMC). The heavy mineral extraction plant is controlled and informed of the proportions of minerals in the HMC according to their magnetic susceptibility. The different fractions are called magnetic, paramagnetic and non-magnetic fractions and quality control is based on their magnetic fraction weights combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis. This current quality control process is very time consuming and labour intensive. We have aimed to show that we can, by XRD, identify and quantify all the minerals in the HMC and also in the magnetic separations. These results are then compared with results obtained by Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) as well as with the results from the physical separation. It was possible to detect all minerals present in the material by XRD and use the Rietveld method for a full bulk mineral quantification. A maximum of 15 minerals can be included in the Rietveld refinement due to computational restraints. Major minerals detected are rutile, ilmenite and zircon and minor minerals are quartz, epidote, anatase, amphibole, monazite, magnetite, titanite and augite. The XRD and MLA results correlate relatively well and detailed results will be presented for HMC and magnetic fraction samples. Small differences were observed for some minerals due to the different ways in which minerals are detected or due to preparation methods within each method. Rutile seems to be more abundant in the XRD analysis and the detection of Anatase is possible by XRD, but not MLA. Leucoxene (consisting of mainly microcrystalline anatase, rutile and titanite is not detectable by XRD since it is not a mineral, but ilmenite alteration phases are observed instead. There is, however, a correlation between anatase, titanite and rutile detected by XRD and leucoxene analysed by MLA.

The unpaved road network on a surface mine is extensive, comprising numerous roads of varying construction and material qualities with highly variable traffic volumes. Existing haul road maintenance management systems (MMS) work well for predictable traffic volumes, but for complex mine road networks, the MMS becomes onerous. This results in sub-optimal road maintenance strategies with the attendant increase in total road-user costs and reduction in service. A real-time maintenance management system was thus sought to overcome the deficiencies of existing MMS for mine roads. Since most large mines operate trucks with on-board diagnostic data collation, linked through a centralized communication and GPS backbone, it was proposed that road condition could be monitored on a real-time basis through on-board vibration signature analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development of a real-time mine haul road maintenance management system. Following are view of mine road maintenance practices, the real-time system architecture is introduced and the results of a field trial of on-board vibration signature assessment is presented. The trial results are discussed in the light of road defect signature recognition, analysis, signature repeatability and system limitations. This approach has applicability to other situations such as a network of district roads, subject to an analysis of the economic feasibility. The paper concludes that modern technology has the potential to apply maintenance as and where needed with possible reductions in authority cost and an improvement in service provided for the road user.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well-known that there are largo deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stock piled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines. This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3506, Manganese Investigations 1. Concentration of Manganese Ores from the Drum Mountain District, Utah, by S. R. Zimmerley, J. D. Vincent, and C. H. Schack. Other reports will be published as the work progresses.
