"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. Virtually every available measure of total world mineral industry activity demonstrated that 1982 was little, if any, better for the industry than 1981 had been. Levels of production, trade, and consumption for virtually every major commodity declined; unit prices for most commodities fell, particularly in terms of constant dollars, and as a result of cutbacks in output and lower prices, capital available for investment within the industry was reduced. These conditions, coupled with the existence of considerable idle capacity, tended to retard investment, although there was an upturn in U.S. oil industry investment overseas. Despite the overall depressed situation of the world&apos;s mineral industry, there were indications of possible improvements in market economy countries near yearend, as output of some materials increased marginally and as prices for some mineral commodities reversed their downward trends. The downturns in total world mineral industry activity were not universal from the viewpoint of individual countries. Indeed, output of a number of commodities increased in centrally planned economy countries, and these gains were insufficient to offset declines in market economy countries, thereby sharply altering the proportion of total world output accounted for by each of these two groups of countries. There was a similar shift in consumption on a percentage basis.

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) is a regional sewer authority that serves ten communities in the Providence, Rhode Island metropolitan area. From 1992 to 1999, the NBC developed a comprehensive facilities plan to abate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) pollution in the Upper Narragansett Bay. The plan underwent many major evolutions during this period, most notably the addition of a stakeholder?s process by which NBC demonstrated a site-specific plan to control the pollutants and meet water quality standards. The favored solution consisted of deep tunnel storage with treatment at existing wastewater facilities that had been recently upgraded. In 1999, a final plan was accepted which included two tunnels, five CSO interceptors, twelve sewer separation projects, a wetland facility, and a wastewater treatment facility upgrade. The program is to be constructed over 20 years in three sequential phases (Figure 1). Phase I of the program includes a 4,963 m (16,284 ft) long, 7.9 m (26 ft) diameter, 70.1 m (230 ft) deep storage tunnel; seven drop shafts with connecting adits; ancillary facilities; and a pump station. Construction of Phase I began in 2001 and is expected to be operational by October 2008. This paper focuses on design and construction of the Fields Point Tunnel Pump Station (FPTPS)located at the south end of the main spine tunnel. A189 Ml/day (50 MGD) pump station is required to lift CSO flows from the tunnel to the Fields Point Wastewater Treatment Facility (FPWWTF). The pumps are to be housed in a 35.6 m × 18.6 m ×20.7 m (117 ft × 61 ft × 68 ft), 91.4 m (300 ft) deep cavern excavated in a complex meta-sedimentary rock of the Rhode Island Formation, and connected to the surface by 9.7 m (32 ft) and 3.4 m (11 ft) diameter shafts. Factors which influenced selection of the size, configuration and location of facilities included the preferred arrangement of pumps, critical aspects of site geology, and estimated cost. Technical and value engineering reviews also affected the final design. Following Notice to Proceed (NTP), concerns were raised by the contractor regarding constructability and design. Additional geotechnical investigation and independent engineering review were employed to validate the design assumptions. The cavern was successfully excavated and sup-ported in rock, completed on schedule and within budget in 2005. In 1992 the NBC retained Louis Berger Group (LBG) as Program Manager (PM) for the CSO Abatement Program. LBG thereafter formed a design team including: Jacobs Engineering Group(JEG) as the designer for underground structures and near surface collection facilities; Black and Veatch(B&V) to design the pumping system and associated facilities; Haley and Aldrich (H&A) to oversee the geotechnical program; and Malcolm Pirnie to design the system-wide instrumentation and control system. Construction management, resident engineering, and inspection services were provided by the joint venture Gilbane/Jacobs Associates (G/J).

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

Mine rehabilitation is a sustainability issue that has been revisited ad infinitum; however, the persistent lack of demonstrated on-the-ground performance and an increasingly intractable rehabilitation liability in Queensland continue to erode the credibility of the mining industry and regulatory bodies. For at least ten years the need to change the current, process-based approach to rehabilitation to an outcomes-based approach has been apparent. The ISO 14001 series temporarily diverted attention from this important point, however it would appear the limitations of an ISO 14001 approach are now more widely accepted. It is proposed that a successful outcomes-based approach cannot be achieved without meaningful community engagement. The apparently intractable nature of the rehabilitation issue will continue to generate conflict and criticism unless all stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process of developing robust and practical outcomes for rehabilitation. Sharing the responsibility will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to recognise the valuable resources inherent in community groups, many of whose committed volunteers have considerable expertise in relevant areas. Community groups should not be seen as adversaries but as allies in the process of solving problems that affect the wider community. Several projects that can be seen as test cases for the engagement of stakeholders exist, and in this paper the process of achieving multiple stakeholder engagement in the context of Environmentally Sustainable Development is discussed.

The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering&#174; is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering&#174; is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering&#174; is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. The transportation of cemented and non-cemented mine tailings in the form of paste through pipelines is one of the main stages of paste backfill operations. For the purpose of pipeline design, the rheological properties of the materials, such as yield stress and viscosity must be determined. In this study, the yield stress of two Canadian mine tailings, for gold and copper mineralization, were studied using the vane method and slump tests. The comparison between the vane method and the slump tests indicates that the slump tests generally overestimate the yield stress values for both cemented and non-cemented paste backfills. In addition, the effects of 5% Portland cement (type 10) and mixing time on the yield stress of paste backfills were investigated. The percentage of cement as a binder agent has a direct effect on the increase of the yield stress of paste backfills. Yield stress measurements show that mixing times of 4 minutes and 12 minutes have the same effect on the yield stress values.

The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gpd) of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1600 trillion gal. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 ppm is generally available at depths of less than 1000 ft, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1000 ppm is available in some places to depths of more than 3000 ft. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-ft (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-ft (about 340,000 mgd), which originated outside the region, leaves the region as streamflow during an average year. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content. Large quantities of water from streams and waterbearing sands (aquifers) are available in the Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River. Most of the region is underlain by aquifer systems that will yield large quantities of water to wells, making ground water the most readily available source of fresh water. About 90% of the water used in the region is obtained from wells. Streams have been used primarily to dispose of, and dilute, wastes that have been dumped into them. The Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, and the lower parts of the Tombigee and Yazoo rivers also serve as a means of transportation. This nominally water-rich region receives from 48 to 56 in. of precipitation in average years and is crossed by several large rivers. The largest, the Mississippi River, is the western boundary of the region discussed in this paper. The economy of the region is basically agricultural, but industry has become increasingly important since World War 11. The diversification and mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a surplus of manpower, most of which is being absorbed by the expansion of industry. Further industrial expansion probably will occur because of the available manpower, natural resources and economical transportation. Increasing demands on available water supplies will be made and the future economic growth of the region will be largely dependent upon wise utilization and management of the water resources.

Dry separation was the predominant method of coal cleaning in the United States from the 1930s to 1980s. The application peak of dry separators for cleaning raw coal was in 1965, when about 23.1 Mt of cleaned bituminous coal was produced. The main advantage of dry coal cleaning is the elimination RIWKH GHZDWHULQJ VWDJHV DQG VLJQL¿FDQWO\ UHGXFHG moisture in comparison to wet processing. In addition, developed dust control systems have made dry cleaning method an environmentally friendly process. The largest air-based coal cleaning plant was built in Pennsylvania in 1968 and could clean 1,272 t/h of raw coal sized smaller than 19 mm. This was followed by a decline in dry coal cleaning to less than 3.6 Mt in 1988. Detailed descriptions by operating area of the Kidd copper smelter are presented, together with accounts of complement staffing, training, and preparation activities for smelter start-up in June 1981. Concentrate tonnages smelted in the first twelve months of operation were constrained by the capacity of the furnace off-gas system. However, modifications designed and introduced over that period, plus sustained efforts by operations and maintenance personnel have resulted in stepwise improvements in smelter performance.. Consistent operation at design feed rates has been well demonstrated over the third and fourth smelter campaigns and efforts continue on further improving the continuous smelter on-line times and increasing campaign life. In November 1982., following a seventeen month preproduction period, the Kidd smelter attained full operating status.

The VoD of non-ideal explosives depends on the charge diameter and the thickness, strength and sound velocity of the confiner. VoD measurements are made to evaluate explosives for development, quality control and prediction of field performance. In testing, the container is part of the explosive system and affects the measured VoD. Pipe testing in cardboard tubes delivers the best guide to unconfined critical diameter and minimum VoD range, but the thickness of the pipes affects the result close to critical diameter, even in emulsions. PVC pipes are not good for unconfined test work because they provide relatively strong confinement. Care must be taken to select pipes with constant relative pipe area across the range of diameters. Where pipes are used to evaluate the effect of confinement, the ratio of the wall thickness relative to the thickness of the detonation driving zone in the explosive needs to exceed 0.5 to create full confinement and the ratio of the detonation velocity to the confiner wave speed must be considered. Estimates for critical thicknesses are provided from Non-Ideal detonation models. The relationship between confinement modulus and VoD is discussed and indexes are suggested for quantifying the explosive performance.

Economics is a social science dealing with the allocation of scarce resources. In modern times the “science” was identified by Adam Smith in his book, The Wealth of Nations, written in 1776. Mr.Smith, highly influenced by the Mercantilists of the 17th and 18th centuries, identified the “Invisible Hand” which would lead every individual to pursue selfish rewards in purchasing goods. He speculated these selfish motives would result in the best good for all. Price would be determined by barter, at a point where self-centered customers and vendors were mutually satisfied. Today, Smith’s theory is known throughout the world as “Capitalism” but most often termed “Free Enterprise” in the United States.

Electrocoagulation (EC) has been performed with Al-Fe electrode system with changing polarity for the removal of arsenic from water. The removal process has been studied using ICP-AES and Anodic Stripping Voltammetry with a wide range of arsenic concentration (1-1000 ppm) at various pH (4-10) and residence times (1-60 min). Electrochemically generated by-products have been analyzed using XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM/EDS and Mössbauer Spectroscopy. Results revealed expected crystalline iron oxides (magnetite (Fe3O4), lepidocrocite (FeO(OH)), iron oxide (FeO)) and aluminum oxides (bayerite (Al(OH)3), diaspore (AlO(OH)), mansfieldite (AlAsO4?2(H2O)), as well as some interaction between the phases. The amorphous or ultra-fine particular phase was also found in the floc. The substitution of Fe3+ ions by Al3+ ions in the solid surface has been observed, indicating an alternative removal mechanism of arsenic in these metal hydroxides and oxyhydroxides by providing larger surface area for arsenic adsorption via retarding the crystalline formation of iron oxides.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot-deep vertical borehole¬. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmos¬phere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respec¬tively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the correspond¬ing values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the&apos; reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere &quot;blind stabbing.&quot;As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. Subsequent prospecting below this depth failed to locate further ore.In consequence of the inaccessibility of the mines and the almost total masking of the&apos; surface by alluvium, the investigation of future possibilities became largely an. office ,study, which was conducted under the following headings:-1. The flash induced combustion of Sewell and Pittsburgh coals was studied in air and in oxygen. The primary decomposition and combustion processes occur within the first 300 ~sec in oxygen and slightly later in air. Strong absorption spectra of CN and OH are indicative of the decomposition and combustion processes, respectively. Kinetic spectroscopy and combustion product analyses indicate that only about 35% of the coal dust is consumed in the explosive combustion which takes place in several (1-5) distinct but similar steps. The combustion-modifying effects of (NH4)2HP04, NH4H2P04, KHC03 and Rock Dust were studied in the 1-20 wt % range in coal dust flash com-busted in air and oxygen. The study reported herein shows Rock Dust to be the most efficient coal combustion inhibitor. KHC03 is the least effective agent, with the phosphate salts showing marginal effectiveness.

The performance of seven antiscalants spanning a range of chemistries was evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formation in gold processing applications. Three preferred chemistries were identified which provided up to 100 percent inhibition in static jar tests when applied at 30 ppm dosage. The three products were further evaluated using a model carbon extraction circuit developed for this application. The test circuit enabled direct measurement of calcium carbonate formed on the carbon from a supersaturated solution under dynamic conditions. The antiscalants lowered CaCO3 buildup on the columns by 15 - 26 percent compared to untreated controls. Impact of the antiscalants on the rate and extent of gold loading onto a carbon adsorbent was evaluated in laboratory carbon-in-pulp (CIP) studies. The antiscalants generated a 25 - 35% increase in gold loading at gold extraction efficiencies up to 65%. On-site testing at a gold processing facility demonstrated that 10 ppm of the preferred antiscalant was able to fully suppressCaCO3formation in thickener overflow water.

This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

Amodified load transfer method computing the displacement, axial compression, skin resistance, toe resistance, and other static bearing behaviours of piles, is propoesd in this paper. Through deriving a new concrete computational method with simple integration, many complex factors, such as different soil properties of each layer in layered soil, variation of soil parameters with the changes of the depth, different elastic moduli of piles under different loads, and even different areas in the same pile, can all be easily considered. This method fits in with many types of piles, including friction and point bearing piles, precast and cast-in-situ piles. Observation of static loading test on pile is given, and the computed values from the modified load transfer method are found to agree with practical measured results.
