I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

The 61,470-acre Lick Creek Roadless Study Area is in the western Salmon River Mountains, centered 12 miles northeast from McCall, ID. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined the roadless area in 1984. There is no recorded mineral production from the study area and no current mineral-related activity was observed. The roadless area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Pegmatite dikes and aplite dikes are present locally. Sampling indicates these rocks are not mineralized. No mineral resources were identified. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of federal lands recommended for wilderness, as required by The Wilderness Act of 1964. The USBM examines and evaluates individual mines, claims, prospects, and mineralized zones; USGS conducts broader geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Such data helps Congress and other federal agencies make decisions affecting the use of public lands.

The geology of the roof of the Pittsburgh coal bed was studied and mapped in nine contiguous counties containing the bulk of the remaining reserves of this coal bed in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. Drill core records from Belmont and Monroe counties, Ohio, Washington and Greene counties Pennsylvania, and Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Monongalia, and Marion counties, West Virginia provided the data for twelve computer generated regional geologic variable maps. Four of these geologic variables (overburden thickness, vertical distance to the rider coal, lithology at the five foot horizon above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam, and the number of lithologic changes within the 30 foot interval above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam) were used to estimate the risk of potential roof falls by a methological scheme developed during this study. A hazard zone risk map was developed showing a generalized regional trend of increasing risk from west to east across the basin. Mapping of individual geologic variables and mapping of hazard risk can be done at any scale. The accuracy of the mapping is primarily dependent on the density of the drill core records. Geologic feature maps and the hazard risk map contained in this report are reduced (1 :500,000 scale) versions of the larger scale (1 :62,500) maps prepared for the Bureau of Mines as map folios.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines currently finds employment: tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners, and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill and blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size, and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has already paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hardrock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines, when several significant challenges have been met.

Advance knowledge of roof conditions can lead to improvement in roof control strategies that will reduce roof falls and ultimately will reduce injuries to mine workers. J.H. Fletcher and Company, in cooperation with West Virginia University, has been developing a system to meet these needs by collecting torque, thrust, and rotation speed data during drilling operations. Recent improvements in analysis algorithms to detect anomalies in the roof structure as well as various display enhancements for real time mapping and evaluation of roof structures have been incorporated into current Fletcher Information Display system. The unit has also been housed in an explosion-proof container to allow use in coal mine applications. Recently, the system has undergone extensive field trials in several limestone mines and one coal mine. During these trials, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health assisted Fletcher in verifying the accuracy of the roof mapping capability of the system by comparing the display information to bore hole scoping observations and drill corings. It was concluded from this assessment that the intelligent drilling system can complement scoping and core analysis to provide a more complete picture of roof strata and is capable of seeing features or conditions that are not always obvious in these more traditional methods.

Researchers have developed a model to describe airborne respirable dust (ARD) generation on surface coal mine drills. By measuring a few basic parameters and using a graph, a drill operator or engi­neer can estimate the relative severity of drill dust emissions as well as how much of a reduction in ARD can be obtained by changing any given parameter. Geometric parameters include: drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud leakage associated with the deck shroud as well as the operational parameters of bailing air­flow, and dust collector airflow. The rela­tionships yield predictive ARD values which fall in the range measured on oper­ating drills for collector/bailing air flow ratios greater than 2. Overexposure to airborne respirable crystalline silica dust can cause serious or fatal respiratory disease. Exposures of sur­face coal mine rock drillers to respirable crystalline silica are of particular concern. In a 1992 alert on silicosis in rock drillers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported on 23 cases of advanced silicosis (acute, acceler­ated, and chronic) ranging in ages from 25 to 60 with drilling tenures ranging between three and 20 years.1 Most of the cases involved drill operators in their 30?s and 40?s, indicating high silica exposure levels are associated with their occupation. A more recent lung x-ray surveillance study of a 664 volunteer population of surface coal miners showed that the prevalence of silicosis-like abnormalities was 9%.2 The two most significant factors associated with these abnormalities were increasing age and years of drilling experience.

The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. "INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is undergoing growth and change at a rapid rate. The modern flotation process was discovered only in the mid-twenties, and uranium leaching in the mid-fifties. The growth of individual unit equipment size is also a recent development and is perhaps most dramatically illustrated by the increase in size and connected horsepower in grinding mills. It is also apparent in much of the equipment used in mining operations.These technical and mechanical developments have influenced the design of plants but not to the expected degree.Many metallurgists believed until recently that grinding an ore in the absence of steel results in a loEs of selectivity in the flotation. However results reported by Thornton (1), Fahlstrom (2), Canmet (3 & 4) have shown on the contrary better selectivity and improved recovery at a lower operating cost. According to the Aitik (2) plant results, the net difference in cost plus tailing value in favour of the two-stage autogeneous grinding circuit is in the order of 40 cents per ton of ore milled. Even a greater difference was indicated by the results obtained by Canmet on a sample supplied by Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd.Yet how many plants are taking advantage of these findings and how many plants are being converted. How much more improvement of the results would have been obtained if these tests had incorporated optimization of classification efficiency? By nature the mining industry and the mineral processors are conservative, and tend to emphasize the possible penalties for an unsuccessful innovation out of proportion to the potential rewards even for a significant improvement."

"Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

Authors have been conducting research on autonomous loading operation by wheel loader. Autonomous loading cycles has been demonstrated with real size experimental model. In V shape loading operation, travelling between scooping point and dumping point is dominant factor for cycle time of the operation. The positions of scooping point and dumping point changes with advancing the operation. In the developed system, path planning is performed at the beginning of every cycle. The path is formed by combination of curve and straight path elements. During travelling on the planned path, path following control is applied on the loader to keep position error in narrow range. Positioning of the loader is based on dead reckoning with correction by global positioning system (GPS) data. In a process of path following control, control value for steering angle is determined based on position error in lateral direction. Proposed method of path planning and position control is installed and tested in the real size experimental model. The detail and results will be described in the paper.

In Bureau of Mines research on recycling chrome-containing refractory wastes, used refractories from argon-oxygen decarburization and electric steelmaking furnaces were beneficiated. By means of dry magnetic separation on minus 6-mesh crushed wastes, a concentrate was produced. After minor adjustments to the particle size distribution, full-size refractory brick were dry-pressed by a commercial producer and fired to 1,450° and 1,730° C. Standard testing procedures were used to determine the cold-crushing strength, modulus of rupture at 25°, 1,300°, and 1,500° C, hot load, thermal shock resistance, thermal expansion, and slag resistance. Optical and electron microscopy were used to determine grain-bonding mechanisms, and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays was used to determine elemental distribution. The test results indicate that the beneficiated material could be used to produce a refractory product suitable for moderate-temperature applications.

This paper covers the salient features of the occurrence and mining of sheet mica in the United States and the preparation of mica for market; presents the results of a study of the physical properties of domestic and foreign micas, which the author hopes may he of interest to every mica user, as it definitely answers many questions as to the suitability of various minas for particular purposes; and discusses mica-trade conditions and the future outlook for the domestic mica industry. The advance-and-relieve method benefits from lateral destressing associated with mining in laminated rocks and a high horizontal stress regime. This stress control method is based on measurements showing that occurrence of rock failure in the roof and floor of an entry (or caving of roof strata in a panel gob) results in redistribution of stresses in adjacent entries. By locating other entries within the shadow zone of the first entry (or gob), improvements in stability can be achieved. Numerical modeling proved useful in studying the basic mechanics of lateral relief while investigating the sensitivity of results to different geologic and mining parameters using controlled experiments. It was shown that failure of rocks near an entry results in redistribution of horizontal stress and shifting of the stress to higher horizons. Measurements from two mines are consistent in showing significant horizontal stress reductions in comparison with the far-field stress regime within the destressed zone. Although the far-field stress regime is very anisotropic, these measurements show near-equal secondary principal horizontal stresses, or perhaps a switch in orientation, as a result of destressing. Stress relief is achieved through lateral movement and relaxation of rocks along weak bedding planes toward adjacent caved zones (or softened zone). Because of cave geometry in the advancing panel, horizontal stress concentrations occur near the cave line both in front of the face and to the sides. The horizontal stress concentration reaches 1.7 times the far-field stress ahead of the face. This stress increase is significant and may cause structural damage in this zone benefiting from additional support. In the next advancing panel located within the shadow zone of the gob, horizontal stresses are significantly reduced in the roof (by 50%). Thus, the stability of future advancing panel can be improved through prudent layout designs and sequencing. The width of the relief zone is significantly influenced by the height of the softened (or cave zone) and rock mass properties.

Masurium and rhenium are two elements known only to a few scientists and known to them for scarcely more than five years . The existence of two members of the manganese family was long suspected , and places were left for them in the orderly table of the periodic systemas developed by Mendeljeeff . The empty spaces left in this table some 60 years ago were for elements numbered 43 and 75 , respectively , and since it was evident these were related to manganese they were sought for in research laboratories under the names of ekamanganese and dvimanganese . This nomenclature is in harmony with that usually employed in describing hypothetical elements , and the prefixes are taken descriptively from ancient Sanskrit wherein the word " eka " means one and " dvi " ( also spelled dui or dwi ) means two . Ekamanganese or element 43 was once removed and dvimanganese or element 75 was twice removed from manganese . It was further possible to predict that these elusive elements would not only be related to manganese but would have a great deal in common with certain other elements . It was reasonable to suppose that element 43 , merely because it stood in numerical sequence between element 42 and element 44 , would likewise prove to be intermediate in many other respects . Since its next neighbors were molybdenum ( No. 42 ) on the one hand and ruthenium (No. 44) on the other , ekamanganese could be given in advance what would correspond among persons to a social and economic rating . Similarly , the properties of dvimanganese were likely to be in simple harmony with those of tungsten and with those of osmium , which latter , like ruthenium , is a member of the platinum group of metals . Another inference , although one which could not be stated with scientific certainty , is that these new elements because they have odd instead of even atomic numbers , would be even more sparingly distributed than their near neighbors , none of which is abundant in nature . This inference has been amply supported by available evidence . These elements eluded discovery until 1925 and never have been found except as minute traces in complex association with relatively rare minerals . In 1930 , for the first time , rhenium became available in quantities which give promise of commercial possibilities , but masurium still stands on the border of the unknown , like some distant star speck photographed and identified by vigilant astronomers but invisible without the aid of the powerful tools of science . The telltale flame of element 43 has been charted by its spectrum lines ; but beyond that , little more can be said except perhaps to repeat the forecasts made for ekamanganese before the Noddacks captured it and gave it a definite name . Certain rare - mineral dealers will furnish molybdenite samples from Norway which are said to contain masurium as well as rhenium , but except for a few highly technical statements as to its behavior in the spectrograph , nothing in the way of concrete information on masurium has come to the notice of the present writer . The literature of rhenium is a little less meager and a brief résumé of the data available in the files of the Bureau of Mines may be of interest not merely because of the novelty of the metal but because its unique properties and increasing availability afford a prospect of its finding employment in industry .

The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation.
