Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic supply was evident, During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Mines has ascertained the potash resources in certain districts through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the Passage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

The additive property of dispersion variances was found experimentally by D.G. Krige using data from the gold deposits of the Witwatersrand. In this property, called ?Krige?s relationship?, the dispersion of a small unit, v, within the deposit is equal to the sum of the dispersion of v within a bigger unit, V, and the dispersion of these units, V, within the deposit, D. It is known that the variance of the grades decreases as the support increases, the so-called volume-variance relationship. To analyse volume-variance and Krige?s relationship, the methodology herein proposed combines blending piles and geostatistical simulation to simulate the in situ and the pile grade variability. Variability reduction in large piles is based on the volume-variance relationship, i.e. the larger the support, the smaller the variability (assuming perfect mix). Based on a pre-defined mining sequence to select the blocks that will form each pile for each simulated block model, the statistical fluctuation of the grades derived from real piles can be simulated. Using this methodology, one can evaluate within a certain time period the expected grade variability for various pile sizes, and also calculate the Krige?s relationship between the small blocks and the piles of different sizes. A real case study using a large Brazilian iron ore deposit illustrates the methodology and demonstrates the validity of the results.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted studies of the slags related to ferrous technology to evaluate experimentally acceptable substitutes for the auxiliary flux, mineral fluorspar, in steelmaking operations. Comparative heats were made in a 1/4-ton, pilot-scale, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) to evaluate a waste material known as "used potlining." Used pot lining is recovered from alumina reduction cells after its useful life and contains significant levels of fluorine and sodium in various compounds. This material in both lump and pelletized form provided adequately fluid slags, based on observations made during BOF operation. No adverse effects were found on furnace performance, metal and slag chemsitry, the strength of the steel produced, or the environment. Fluorine recovery in the slag was about the same as that obtained when using fluorspar, as were the losses to the scrubber water and solids. No difference was observed in furnace-refractory attack, as determined by the level of magnesia in the slag. The sodium recovered in the slag apparently also contributed to fluidity, since the fluorine input was at about two-thirds that of the fluorspar. Used potlining was determined experimentally to be a satisfactory substitute for fluorspar in basic oxygen steelmaking.

Equipment and techniques were developed with Bureau of Mines facilities for measurement in the laboratory of sonic shear wave velocity in variously shaped rock specimens in a wide range of sizes. A variety of rock types was tested. The shear wave front is produced by electronically excited, piezo-electric ceramic) disk-shaped transducers. Transmitter and receiver are interchangeable. Special equipment components were Bureau produced; other components were commercially available. The equipment permits quick measurement of shear wave velocity on variously shaped specimens with a minimum of specimen preparation. The technique, under favorable conditions, allows for determination of the moment of arrival of the shear wave when it is superimposed on a weak longitudinal wave.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

Expansion measurements of platinum, added as an internal standard, are used for thermal calibration of X-ray cameras and diffractometers. Accuracy of the temperatures derived by this technique depends on the precision of expansion measurements and the reliability of reference expansion data. Temperature measurements to ± 1° C. require ?d or ?a to be determined within ± 0.001 percent. Selected expansion data are concluded to be reliable to 2° C., 5° C., and 25° C., over the temperature ranges 0° C. to 700° C., 700° C. to 1,000° C., and 1,000° C. to 1,700° C., respectively. Tabular expansion values from 25° C. to 1,700° C. in 2° C. intervals were calculated from the following equation; Expansion, percent = [8.91 + 1.28 x 10-3(t-25) + 0.04 x 10-6(t-25) ] [t-25.104 ] These tabular values facilitate future corrections of published temperatures as more reliable expansion-temperature data become available.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

Bacterial leaching represents an unusual problem in biochemical engineering, because the substrate for bacterial growth is not supplied directly, but is a product of another reaction, the leaching of mineral particles. Leaching arises from the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions, which in turn oxidize the mineral. For the bacterial dissolution of pyrite, these reactions are: [ ] (Y represents a stoichiometric yield factor, and N represents the amount of bacteria.) Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. The work described herein is the opening phase of an extensive system of underground excavation undertaken under contract with a Malayan authority.The specifications called for the lining of all tunnels in earth or broken rock with circular segmented cast iron lining, similar to that of the London tubes, and it is the installation of these linings which it is proposed to discuss.Owing to the long deferred delivery quoted and the obvious need for speed of access to the internal installation, it was decided to defer driving the completed circular section and substitute two small timbered headings.These could later be opened out in turn to full section and lined without prejudice to traffic, since both of them had access to the internal workings.NATURE OF ROCKThe rock series through which the circular sections were driven consisted of:(a) A wide zone of intrusive porphyritic granite, consisting generally of orthoclase phenocrysts in a ground mass of micro pegmatite. This area showed advanced weathering, varying from a stage showing slightly tinted kaolin containing approximately 20% of small boulders to one of ultimate decomposition to pure kaolin;(b) A narrow zone of weathered augite diorite, consisting of rock masses of a maximum weight of some 100-150 tons, isolated by clay seams up to 1 ft. 6 in. in width.The whole area was in a state of quasi-hydrostatic equilibrium, which resulted in heavy pressure immediately after excavation. Freshly broken faces would appear to be quite solid but, within a few minutes, would commence to sweat and "slab off" under pressure and, unless support was placed promptly, the whole face would burst out and run from above. Mucking was slow, owing to the plastic nature of the clay and the ease with which it puddled into slurry.In zone (b) a good deal of trouble was experienced because of the fact that the somewhat heavy blasting necessary tended to cause movement of the large rock masses. Subsequent scouring out of the supporting clay bands by the waterflow permitted settlement of the ground on to the timbers and many reinforcing sets were therefore required.The timbering of the pilot headings and its relation to the cross-section of the circular tunnels is shown in Fig. 1. In line with the Bureau of Mines' goal of providing technology to maintain a supply of minerals adequate to meet national economic and strategic needs, a method for recovering chromite from lateritic materials was investigated. Laterites are a large resource of Ni, Co, and Cr, critical metals of which the United States has insufficient domestic sources. A roast-leach method was developed by the Bureau to extract nickel and cobalt from domestic laterites. A concurrent effort was made to recover chromium from either unprocessed laterites or the leach residues. This report characterizes laterites and laterite leach residues. It describes a chromite recovery procedure using conventional industrial beneficiation equipment for sizing, low-intensity magnetic separation, and gravity concentration. Concentrates containing 20.0 to 22.4 pct Cr (29.0 to 32.7 pct Cr203) and with a 1.6:1 to 1.9:1 Cr-Fe ratio were recovered from laterites and residues containing 1.3 to 2.5 pct Cr with recoveries exceeding 50 pct. Because of their low grade and fine size, these concentrates would be suitable for preparing chromium chemicals. The direct beneficiation of laterites for chromite recovery resulted in the minerals containing nickel and cobalt concentrating in slime products. No iron oxide coproducts of acceptable grade were recovered from either laterites or residues.

It is also necessary in order to provide the information from which empirical vibration prediction equations, such as the one proposed by Holmberg (11 for example, can be derived. (Strictly speaking, the “near field” extends from the blasthole itself to about one charge length away from it; however, throughout this article, “near field”will.most often refer to the outer limit of this zone, from roughly 0.75 to 1.50 charge length away.) In order to obtain reliable data, proper field monitoring techniques are of paramount importance. Once the data are properly recorded, analysis can be done either in the time domain (describing vibration amplitude vs. time) or in the frequency domain (usually describing vibration amplitude vs. frequency)."
