Productivity, customer relations, and effectiveness of work depend to an ever-increasing extent on a functioning logistics system tailored to the needs of the user. Of course, it is not possible to cover and explain all aspects of the logistical requirements of even a small part of an industry, in a single article. The article speaks specifically about the particularities and differences in the logistical requirements in the explosives sector. Starting with questions of safety, handling and quality up to the legal basis, there are special requirements regarding the logistics in the explosives sector. The results of innovative logistics solutions are presented using three examples from daily work practice.

The successful expansion of crude oil production begun in late 1977, led to promising development of the nonfuel minerals sector. Although actual production of nonfuel minerals was limited both in variety and in percentage of output on a world scale, the potential for expansion with a rapidly developing infrastructure was significant. The energy base was expanding with construction of two new hydroelectric powerplants in addition to the existing plant near Edea. The Song Loulou plant will have a 240-megawatt capacity, and a hydroelectric plant under construction in the northern part of the country by mainland China will have 72 megawatts of installed capacity. Inflation of between 15% and 20% resulted in a real gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.8 billion2 in fiscal year 1980 (July 31 to June 1), up 6% from that of the previous fiscal year. Petroleum became the leading export item in terms of value, surpassing coffee and cocoa exports. Mineral exports as a whole increased eightfold in value, mainly because of oil sales. Oil exports also caused a reduction in the trade deficit by nearly one-third, and the Government expected its 1980-81 budget to be balanced at $1.17 billion. The Port of Douala accounted for about 8 million tons of cargo, or 93% of total maritime traffic for Cameroon. Expansion plans for the port call for an initial increase to 5 million tons, and a cargo handling capacity of 7.5 million tons in 1985 and 10 million tons by 1990. The Port of Victoria will gain importance with the startup of an oil refinery. The country's third seaport at Kribi was used solely for timber shipments, and capacity at the Port was to triple by 1981. The seismicity of the Witwatersrand Basin and Bushveld Complex has been analysed, revealing significant differences in source and damage mechanisms. A comparison of mining taking place at similar depths and extraction ratios indicates that the seismic energy release rate is considerably lower in the Bushveld Complex. Technologies introduced in the past decade to manage the risk of rockbursting are reviewed and assessed. These include geophysical methods to detect hazardous structures ahead of mining, new mining layouts and support systems, and the mechanization of in-stope processes. Despite important differences in geology, in situ stress, mining layouts and methods, there are many opportunities for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between the gold and platinum mining sectors to improve the management of the rockburst risk.

The Clearwater Deposit, a small occurrence of massive-sulphide mineralization enclosed in an envelope of disseminated-sulphide mineralization, was discovered as a result of an aeroelectromagnetic survey in New Brunswick in 1955. Subsequently, additional flights were made over the deposit and various ground follow-up methods were employed to ascertain the nature of their response. All methods proved to be capable of indicating the occurrence with varying degrees of precision. This paper is a presentation and a discussion of the magnetic and electromagnetic data, both airborne and ground, and the self-potential data obtained over this deposit. The attention of Canadian mining exploration companies was initially focussed on New Brunswick by the discovery, in 1953, of the Brunswick ore body. Ground electromagnetic surveys were of considerable assistance in locating and developing this deposit. In the following year, 1954, the Heath Steele base-metal deposits were discovered by employing an airborne electromagnetic device and ground electromagnetic surveys to follow-up the airborne indications. These discoveries demonstrated clearly that both airborne and ground electromagnetic techniques were applicable for locating the near-surface deposits of massive sulphides present in this region. Airborne electromagnetic equipment became available on a contract basis through Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited early in 1955 and was used extensively thereafter throughout a large portion of northern New Brunswick. It was as a result of one of these surveys with Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited equipment in the summer of 1955 that the Clearwater Deposit was detected. The airborne anomaly was located on the ground by means of an electromagnetic survey using a Swedish Slingram unit. During 1956, the region was investigated more thoroughly- in the hope that other sulphide bodies might be located. Airborne electromagnetic coverage was extended and the Clearwater Deposit itself was used as a testing ground for the various methods and types of equipment currently in use in New Brunswick. In this paper com prative data are presented for the airborne magnetic, airborne electromagnetic, ground magnetic and ground electromagnetic surveys over this deposit. The ground electromagnetic instruments used were the McPhar vertical-loop unit and the Slingram and Boliden horizontal-loop units. Self-potential surveys were carried out with a McPhar unit. From the geophysical point of view, all ground electrical methods employed indicated the presence and the extent of the massive-sulphide mineralization with a good degree of accuracy. The objectives of the research were to determine whether a model health and safety program could be defined in terms which would enable its application to mines of all types, and, if such a model program could be defined to determine through evaluations in two mining companies whether it would achieve measurable improvements. This volume describes the model, how it was applied in the field, and how it was evaluated. Anecdotal data to illustrate common kinds of safety problems and their solutions are included. The literature and field research that preceded the model definition is discussed in Vol. 2, which covers the period of September, 1980 to September, 1981.

"The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. A series of full scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests was carried out with a long bladed single disc cutter (292 mm diameter, 11mm wide constant cross-section blade) on dry and water saturated sandstone blocks using a linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). The muck collected from the cutting tests has been analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. Coarseness index (CI), a non dimensional parameter, has been found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n is observed between SE and CI with very high CI usually corresponding with the lowest values of SE. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock tests is much less than the values found in the previous studies using constant cross section disc cutters and is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI is found to be lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time saturated rock cutting is found to be less energy intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

Laboratory test results are presented for the determination of elastic modulus made with the NX borehole jack. Determinations were made in massive pieces of aluminum so as to satisfy conditions of linear elasticity, homogeneity, and isotropy. Results indicate a large discrepancy (approximately 200 percent) betwen material modulus as determined by laboratory block-loading tests and that indicated by the jack under relatively ideal circumstances. Effects due to interface friction, finite block size, incomplete plate-bore contact, and other factors were examined and found not to be significant. Finite element results indicate that assumed loading conditions for the jack differ from those actually occurring, at least in materials of high elastic modulus (approximately 10 million psi), such as quartzite.

From 1981-84, Bureau of Mines personnel examined and evaluated mines and prospects in the highly mineralized 62,400 acre Inyo Mountains U. S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wilderness Study Area (WSA), located east of Lone Pine, CA. The 62,400 acres studied is the part of the 87,145 acre WSA designated as suitable prior to February 28, 1983. The WSA is underlain principally by quartz monzonite and quartz diorite that have intruded sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three types of mineral deposits are present: 1) gold in fissure veins, 2) silver in fissure and replacement veins, and 3) talc in metasomatic lenses. Of the 84 nines, mills, and prospects examined, 54 are significant: 1) 5 in the intrusive rocks total about 4.4 million tons of inferred marginal gold reserves averaging 0.24 oz gold and 0.74 oz silver/ton; 2) three associated with intrusive-sedimentary rock contact zones total about 280,000 tons of inferred subeconomic silver resources averaging 7 oz silver/ton; 3) 27 gold and silver occurrences in the intrusive and sedimentary rocks total about 1.2 million tons of material in poorly defined bodies too small or low grade to be resources; 4) 15 gold and silver occurrences in the intrusive and sedimentary rocks are too poorly exposed to estimate tonnage and grade; and 5) four talc deposits along intrusive-sedimentary contact zones have inferred marginal reserves totaling about 640,000 tons. The marginal gold reserves at $450/oz might be profitably mined (reserve) at a gold price of about $600/oz and the subeconomic silver resources at a silver price in excess of about $27/oz. The marginal talc reserves might become minable at prices of about $50/ton and $80/ton for unprocessed and processed talc, respectively, after present supply sources are depleted. At most of the 54 significant mines and prospects, additional reserves or resources would likely be disclosed by trenching or drilling. Present in the WSA are 13 gold mills, numerous small pits and cuts, 270 underground workings totaling about 36,000 ft, and 80 mining benches totaling about 11,000 ft. Gold, silver, or talc were produced from most of the workings. A total of 1,561 lode and 18 placer samples were taken.

Employment and injury experience data for all mineral industries are given in volume III. The 1963 figures are preliminary and are subject to revision. METAL MINES Preliminary estimates for the metal-mining industry of a combined fatal and nonfatal injury-frequency rate of 32.34 per million man-hours in 1963 indicate only a slight change from the rate of 32.00 in 1962. Metal operations had 41 fatal and 3,110 nonfatal injuries during 1963.

"SummaryIn the Port of Naples a slurry wall has been realized through a sandy layer up to a deep tuff layer using the Cutting Soil Mixing technique.The executed panels have dimensions of 2.8 m x0.65 m in plan and a total length of 25 m. Primary and secondary panels have been executed using the wet to wet technique. During the panels execution the following parameters had been measured: injection pressure, injected volume, verticality. At the end of the works an exploratory campaign has been carried out through boreholes collecting samples for laboratory tests in order to verify the diaphragm thickness and its physical and mechanical properties (i.e. unit weight, unconfined compressive strength).The interpretation of the collected data allowed to verify the efficiency of the method, the volume of slurry loss due to permeation during the panels execution, the quantity of the obtained spoil compared to the volume balance equation, both for the sand and the tuff layer.Eventually, the measured physical and mechanical characteristics of the panels have been correlated to the execution method performed.IntroductionIn the Naples Port area there is a polluted site which has to be hydraulically isolated in order to prevent the pollution of the groundwater that flows from land to the sea through the Port area. A hydraulic cut-off wall has to be realized and particularly a slurry-wall realized using the CSM method had been executed.To date, two stretches have been executed, 140 an 110 m in length respectively, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2.After execution, the slurry-walls have been investigated with boreholes. In-situ and laboratory tests on the recovered samples of grout have been carried out; furthermore, the geotechnical parameters of the mix composing the wall have been measured."

Résumé Six modèles métriques de remblai cimenté en pâte (RCP) ont été suivis durant 120 jours par l?utilisation de deux méthodes géophysiques non-destructives : la résistivité et la micro-sismique. Les RCP étaient constitués de trois résidus miniers et de deux proportions de ciment (3% et 6% en poids). En parallèle, des cylindres de RCP étaient utilisés pour évaluer périodiquement l?UCS. La résistivité augmentait quasi-linéairement de 28 à 120 jours pour tous les RCP investigués. Des variations de résistivité selon le type de résidu et le pourcentage de ciment ont été observées. Une équation empirique a été dégagée entre l?UCS, la résistivité, le temps, la densité relative et le rapport eau/ciment (E/C). La mesure de la vitesse des ondes de cisaillement a permis de dégager une équation mathématique de type exponentielle qui relie la résistance mécanique sans correction préalable par les paramètres de la recette de RCP. La réalisation de ce projet avait pour but de dégager la meilleure approche non-destructive afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique des remblais en chantier minier. Sur la base des résultats obtenus, les deux méthodes utilisées ont donné des résultats probants afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique et les deux méthodes sont donc à même d?être utilisées en chantier souterrain. Abstract Six scale models of cemented paste backfill (CPB) were followed during a 120 days period using two nondestructive geophysical methods: resistivity and micro-seismic. CPB were made up of three mine tailings and two cement proportion (3% and 6% by weight). In parallel, CPB cylinders were used to periodically evaluate uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Resistivity was increasing nearly in straight line from day 28 to day 120 for all CPB models. According to the tailing type and cement percentage, resistivity variations were observed. An empirical equation emerged from UCS, resistivity, time, specific gravity of tailings and, water/cement ratio. The use of shearwave velocity allowed to identify a mathematical exponential equation related to mechanical strength without prior correction of the CPB?s formula parameters. The purpose of this project was to identify the best non-destructive approach in order to evaluate the mechanical strength of backfill in a mine site. On the basis of those results, both methods gave conclusive results in order to estimate mechanical strength and both methods can be used in underground operations.

The introduction of social media platforms has ushered in a new era of interaction and information exchange, which impact business-to-society relationships. Mining companies are closely watching these platforms, as the industry takes a cautious approach to control flows of information. This paper explores the risks, challenges and opportunities of using social media, based on a qualitative mixed methods investigation with stakeholders from the Canadian mining industry. Generational and language barriers, misunderstanding and limited motivation from regulators make implementing social media platforms challenging and risky at an organizational level. The benefits of social media include being able to mobilize communities and share information in real time. Despite the challenges, the study found that 62% of mining stakeholders are incorporating social media tools, mostly in an ad hoc manner. Flexible strategies for transparent communication and public engagement are creating new opportunities for information exchange.

Over the past half-century, researchers have commented on the complexities of ion-exchange processes, but have been forced to use gross assumptions to simplify the associated mathematics sufficiently for mathematical models to be of practical use, given the available computational power. This paper reviews the development of increasingly complex models as computational power has increased over the past half-century, from the direct application of Fick's Law in 1947, through to today's models requiring finiteelement methods. The assumptions required for and the associated limitations of the various models are presented and the associated computational complexities are discussed. A case study is presented in which a continuous loss of capacity in an acid resin was observed over about sixty cycles of loading and elution. Resin poisoning does not explain this observation. This paper presents the capacity loss data, speculates on possible causes of the phenomenon, discusses why conventional kinetic and equilibrium mechanisms cannot explain it and concludes that the need to develop a more rigorous model is apparent. The significance of this observation is that standard tests done for a new resin application could significantly overestimate the commercial performance of the resin concerned, highlighting the importance of computer simulation in this field of process engineering.

During an intense and accurate study of initiation systems used on an AngloGold mine, Mine A, poor drilling practices were revealed. Graphic results of all actual measurements taken are shown below. [ ] Accurate drilling of shot holes will determine whether a mining operation is payable or not and at what pay limit mining can take place. Losing 30 cm of a potential 120 cm-hole length will result in a number of consequences, i.e.: ?Higher stoping costs ?Drilling of one shot hole twice in every five shifts ?Increased explosive cost as a result ?Excess stress on hangingwall and footwall due to bad face shape ?Excessive blast damage before the area is worked out. No wonder we have such a high-risk operation. Drilling accuracy is crucial to the profitability on any mine as profits are directly related to the quality and utilization of the drilled shot holes.
