The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated program over a 37-month period (April 1978-May 1981) as part of an economic feasibility study. The program included more than 120 km of core drilling, 63 km of access road construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, plus other related activities. This Tertiary-age copper-molybdenum deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. Both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are present. Erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper have resulted in a deposit now exposed at the surface that contains more than 368 Mt grading about 1% copper equivalent as sulfides.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. A non-notified resource consent was sought which necessitated that environmental effects be shown to be æless than minorÆ, and resulted from robust science and a pragmatic approach to design. As part of the assessment of environmental effects, there was a need to understand the effects of boron concentrations on aquatic organisms (ie algae, plankton, plants and invertebrates) in the receiving environment. Boron is a naturally occurring element that is found in the form of borates in the oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale, and in some soils but Waikato coals and ashes have particularly high boron content. Boron is an essential micronutrient for higher plants with interspecies differences in the levels required for optimum growth. As aspects of the ANZECC (2000) derived boron limits are based on toxicity of aquatic algae and plants to boron it was important to assess these components in the environment. The effects on the receiving environment of the Awaroa Stream were assessed using predicted water chemistry and comparing actual boron concentrations in a comprehensive and multifaceted reference-condition approach of catchment ecological indicators. In addition a toxicological-based assessment of boron and a re-calculation of the ANZECC trigger levels were undertaken and applied to the ecological indicators. The reference-condition approach revealed that habitat and overall water quality attributes at and between sites was more influential in determining the aquatic biotic communities than boron concentrations alone. There was no evidence of any gradient of changes in ecological indicators with changing boron concentrations, nor evidence of any residual effect of high historic boron concentrations on the aquatic biota.

Water pollution problems associated with surface metal/nonmetal mines throughout the United States were assessed. Three major problems were identified: acid mine drainage (AMD), toxic concentrations of heavy metals and excessive sedimentation. Several factors affect the type and amount of pollutants generated at a mine site. Among these are hydrologic regime, geology, mineralogy, topography, climate, size of the mineralized area and mining method. Nine surface mines situated in distinctly different settings were visited and their pollution problems studied. These mines were located in Morenci, Arizona; Hayden, Arizona; Sauharita, Arizona; Cobalt, Idaho; Spruce Pine, North Carolina; Iron Mountain, California; Butte, Montana; Fernwood, Idaho; and DeLamar, Idaho-Oregon. A detailed evaluation of the pollution problems at the Morenci mine indicated that a diversion system and treatment pint would be the most effective means of abatement for the existing water quality problems. Based on the study of the Morenci mine and three other porphyry copper mines with differing problems a water management plan was conceived for a new source copper mine. A companion Appendix Volume containing detailed reports on the mine site visits is on file at the US Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance In the western Crazy Mountains for cobalt and associated metals as part of the Alaska-wide critical and strategic metals program. The area, located about 75 miles north of Fairbanks in central Alaska, is underlain by complexly faulted, predominantly clastic sedimentary rocks bordering the Tintina Fault system. Above background metal concentrations were found to occur in altered fault zones, tectonic breccias, soils, and ground water seeps and precipitates that either cut or are derived from the faulted clastic sedimentary rocks. Up to 0.115 pct cobalt and more than 2.0 pct zinc were detected in soil samples. Spring precipitates contained up to 1.3 pct zinc, 0.037 pct tungsten, and other metals. Some localities lacked cobalt but contained anomalous amounts of copper, lead, zinc, silver, and other metals. No outcropping of primary metallic minerals was located because of Colluvium and vegetation cover and extensive deep leaching. Therefore, whether the metal values encountered are due to primary deposits with economic development potential or are the results of concentration by ground water from low-grade sources is unknown. The presence of cobalt, nickel and zinc, and the identification of minor tin and tungsten indicate that further investigation is warranted.

Information on the performance of coal-cleaning equipment is necessary to provide a basis for evaluating the performance of existing plants and projecting that of new plants. Performance data can contribute greatly to the wise selection and effective use of coal-washing equipment. The Bureau of Mines has published information on the performance of several commercial plants, as well as of some laboratory-scale equipment, 5 (2-9, 11, 12, 17-12, 21-25) from time to time for a number of years. A more intensive program to provide such information for all the principal types of cleaning equipment is underway. The present evaluation of table performance is part of this program.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is planning to replace 5 miles of pipeline under San Francisco Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM and will be the first TBM-driven tunnel under the Bay. The alignment passes under environmentally sensitive habitats, through interbedded layers of sands and clays, and through a buried bedrock ridge. This paper discusses the geotechnical characterization and anticipated tunneling conditions and presents the analysis of various construction methods that resulted in the selection of an EPB TBM. Considerations related to tunneling with an EPB TBM are described in detail, including ground conditioners, TBM cutterhead wear, muck control, and squeezing ground.

The historical background to South Africa?s transformation and the role of the mining industry are pivotal to an appreciation of certain aspects of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broad?Based Socio?Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry. The issues around Black Economic Empowerment and the enabling of a smooth transition to the South African mining industry of the future are explored in this paper.

By sharing my experiences I want to encourage you to consider your own experience with leadership, taking on change, learning from and contributing to the development of others.I have been very fortunate to be part of many new innovations into underground mining over the past 40 or so years; most of it with Conzinc Rio Tinto Australia (CRA)/Rio Tinto operations.•From hand-held drills and a homemade single boom Jumbo mounted on an old Airtrak, to the sophisticated twin boom jumbos with high speed drifters all controlled by an on-board computer;•from a Scraper winch and a Wagner 2D loader to fully automated electric LHDs that navigate to the tipple, empty the bucket and return to where they come from;•from hand-held cut-and-fill and timber stoping in Broken Hill to the bulk mining methods of a block cave where at Northparkes we mined more ore in a month than we mined in the total five years of operations at Currawang;•from hand-held scaling and bolting with no skin protection to installing ground support with Jumbos and sophisticated Cable Bolters and the introduction of in cycle shotcrete;•from hand-held ladder rising and shaft sinking to Box Hole rigs, Raise Bore Machines and Blind Hole shaft sinking; and•from Gelignite based AN60 stick explosives, ANFO, fuse firing and half second detonators to Powergel, Emulsions and electronic computer programmed detonators that can somehow be initiated by ‘Blast Ped’ travelling through the rock.

Transplanting the steps used in exploring and developing mineral deposits on land into the marine environment will help developers. While familiar to oil and gas explorers and many other sea-based industries, the marine environment is so alien to the 90s terrestrial miner that the phrase ?terrestrial mines in the sea? is useful for reinforcing the fundamental parallels in mining sulphides at sea and on land. As on land, the processes of ?pre-feasibility study? and ?feasibility study? will determine the economics of mining a deposit. For many, the step into the sea can detract from the need to follow these familiar and recognised steps used when any new deposit is found on land. The technology to mine sulphides in the 1500 to 2000 m depth range exists. Currently, it is not found in a single, integrated and commercially available system but every element available to build such as system is. Transplanting the thinking of the leaders of the terrestrial mining industry into the sea will perhaps be the greatest challenge and reinforcing the basic steps of discovery - pre-feasibility through to feasibility is the best way to achieve this. After all on land one doesn?t ask ?Can we profitably mine it?? before one can authoritatively answer ?What have we found??. Research by Nautilus Minerals Corporation suggests that the mining of seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) will not only be profitable but potentially lower in both capital and operating costs than prevail in most terrestrial deposits. Nautilus is also acutely aware that with the first SMS deposits under title, it will be setting the standards for seafloor mining into the new millenium. Indeed, we have trained on us not only the eyes of the mining industry waiting to see if SMS deposits really do offer radically better returns, but other stakeholders of the sea and the capital markets. Mistakes by any SMS developer could land all developers in ?hot water?. The rush to exploit our deposits for economic gain will be tempered by ensuring there is adequate public debate and consultation for our environmental code. Failure in any facet of a marine mining development could set back the move to the ocean floor.

Expert Online, as a software system, is aimed at providing plant operators in the minerals industry with effective training and on-the-job assistance. It incorporates a number of features to achieve this goal, of which the most important is its ability to explain the dynamics of the plant and control system in simple language, mimicking an informed plant expert who has online access to the inner workings of the plant and control system. This is made possible by a novel form of Artificial Intelligence, called the Interpreting Expert System. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining controller actions. Expert Online will extend this capability to also perform the more difficult task of explaining process behaviour. Expert Online will implement three main processes, namely the accumulation of data from the controllers and plant models, the interpretation, processing and filtering of that data and lastly communicating the relevant information to the user, both as written messages and in other audio-visual forms. Although Expert Online is aimed at the operator, other plant personnel, like supervisors and plant managers, will also benefit from it. This paper focuses on the structural and functional design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of Mintek’s open control platform, PlantStar, highlighting advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System and concluding with an example illustrating some of the principles.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Iron was a limiting factor, and a method of eliminating its interference was needed.The method now developed overcomes these shortcomings, and gives a reliable result with a purple line for assay values of 0·5 dwtjton and over. Based on the results of this study, the underhand cut and fill stoping method, with mass destressing, is an effective method for controlling rock bursts and falls of ground for deep mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District. The procedure can be utilized to pull highly stressed pillars by converting from conventional overhand stoping methods or used as a primary recovery system. During the demonstration, only one minor rock burst occurred, with no injuries. The system facilitates accurate placement of vertical boreholes for effective mass destressing. Each mining cut is filled with cemented sandfill overlying a timbered mat that forms the back for the succeeding cut. For this demonstration, a cemented fill was mixed on the surface and piped to the stone. Costs for pillar recovery by this method are comparable and are considered cost effective over conventionally timbered overhand mining as a pillar recovery method.

Its flexibility is evidenced by adapation to operation requirements, such is mining area moves, movement of xcavated overburden to designated ites, selective handling of overburden, poll placement contouring, and proiding an environmentally sound and afe operation. The system's productiv:y is evidenced by case studies relating. overall production, excavation rates nd cost-effectiveness. There are many competing alternaves available for excavating uncon)lidated overburden: truck-shovel, raglines, dredges and bucket wheel ticavators. Despite the fact that mined minerals and gemstones have allowed human beings to continuously improve their standard of living throughout the ages, mining has also been implicated in violent conflict for two principle reasons. The first is that mineral resources have been used or traded to conduct or finance violent conflict from small to large scales. The second is the substantial social, economic and environmental changes that occur in a community or a region as a result of mining activity which can either precipitate or re-awaken latent conflict. A modern complication of mining-related violent conflict is the trend for activists, international NGOs and intergovernmental organisations (e.g. the United Nations) to regard any human consequences of resource extraction in terms of Human Rights violations. Acknowledging but not labouring the Human Rights implications of mining-related violent conflict, this paper explores whether or not there is a relationship between the actual or perceived value of mineral resources and the level of violence that occurs in mining-related conflicts. Key to the investigation is a mapping exercise of mining related conflict from 2005 ? 2012: to see where mining related conflict is happening; to identify precipitant causes of mining related conflict; and, to discover what correlation ? if any ? there might be in the degree of violence and the value of the mineral(s) implicated. Findings of the analysis are presented in this conference paper.

This is the final report of work done under contract H0210060 for the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. This program was to show the feasibility of using plastic liners containing sand and other fillers as a means of roof support in coal and other mines. This laboratory study was conducted in two phases, namely: Phase I, directed toward determining which state-of-the-art resin systems might have utility as a means of roof support in a coal mine, consisted of a canvass of resin manufacturers to learn which resins were available commercially that might have utility for this application. The resins submitted by the manufacturers were evaluated in a number of simple tests to define which of them would be most suitable for roof support use.
