In a previous report'/ results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman,5/ to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the many exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones.6/

For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Some of the ?do?s? and ?don?ts? are highlighted. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. Indonesia is a fast growing democratic developing country comprising more than 17,000 islands, founding member of ASEAN and a member of the G-20 major economies. It is one of the most highly mineralised countries in the world, the mining sector playing a pivotal role in the country's economy. In 2001, the Decentralization Law No. 22/1999 came into force and caused a transfer of authority and responsibility from central to regional and local administrative governments. The new Mining Law of 2009 substituted its 40 year old predecessor, but lacked detailed regulations for its implementation. These were only issued in 2010, which lead to a period of great uncertainty for investors in the mining industry. The new legislation intends to foster domestic economic development, which may be interpreted as protectionist policy. For the development of a sustainable mineral resources policy, further endeavours will have to be made.

Levine has concluded that prismatic slip in titanium is controlled by two distinct thermally activated processes in the temperature ranges O° to 220°K and 220" to 300°K. We feel that his evidence is not convincing. He has drawn a curve through the plot of activation volume u* vs temperature T with a break at 22WK, Fig. 2. We believe that considering the possible experimental error apd the fact that there are only four points between 4° and 196°K, one could be justified to represent these points by the smooth curve we show as a solid line in Fig. 12. Levine believes that (8rf/aT)+ is discontinuous at 220°K, but he hints that he recognizes the possible doubt. We doubt seriously that the results shown in Fig. 1 indicate a discontinuity at 220°K. Certainly if he were justified in drawing a straight line through only four points on Fig. 2, we are even more justified in drawing straight lines through the seven points between 77" and 297°K on Figs. 1 and 3, because a straight line touches all seven of his circles. If his measurements of t were so precise that his decision to draw two curves in Fig. 3 is valid, then the experimental technique is deserving of further mention. We have drawn a smooth curve through the results in Fig. 3 and used this and the curve in Fig. 12 to obtain the values of shown in Fig. 13. Finding continuous is a contradiction of Fig. 4, which deserves comment itself. Levine obtained the solid circles in Fig. 4 using Fig. 2 and a smooth curve through the points shown in Fig. 3. We have replotted these solid circles in Fig. 14. We submit that there is no basis for his two straight lines (dashed in Fig. 14), and therefore have superimposed the curve that we believe is indicated. Certainly, there is reasonable doubt that a discontinuity in dH/dT exists at 220°K, even when one accepts Fig, 2. Furthermore, if one draws the straight lines indicated by least-squares treatments of the results presented as open circles in Fig. 4, their intersection is at about 196°K, not at 220°K as shown. Thus the alleged agreement between Figs. 3 and 4 with respect to "break" temperatures is not apparent. In Fig. 9, Levine has drawn a straight line very much different from the one indicated by a least-squares treatment. Obviously, he has done this because he recognized that H = 0 when T = 0. This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.

Underwater explosions have been used several decades for the determination energy content of explosives. It’s the only test method by which shock and gas heave energy values can be determined separately. The total energy is a sum of these two partial energies. This test method enables us to develop explosives for different purposes; the military high explosives should contain more shock energy whereas the gas heave energy is a very important feature for the blasting explosives. The method also enables us to observe the changes and to adjust the energy content of an explosive as a function of increments of one or more energetic component.

This report presents guidelines on methods of dust control in conventional coal mining operations. The normal mining cycle and equipment used in a room and pillar conventional section are described. Main ventilation, section ventilation and face ventilation are discussed in detail. Proper installation of line brattice, maintenance of proper air flows at the face and split ventilation are stressed. The effects of maintaining the end of the line brattice near the face are described. The advantages and disadvantages of blowing and exhausting face ventilation are presented. The use of water sprays on cutter bars and loading machines is described. The design of a nonclogging water spray system developed under a Bureau of Mines contract is presented. Other methods of reducing dust exposure are discussed and include alternative procedures for shot firing and administrative controls.

Expanding blast patterns to near the limit of an explosives’ ability to do the necessary amount of work is a common practice to reduce drilling and blasting costs. Choosing less expensive explosives such as ANFO vs. emulsion, bulk product versus packaged product, etc. are also common cost savers. Both practices are only effective as long as the pattern geometries are accurately drilled. However, will pushing the limits on pattern sizes and explosive products produce consistent results at the face, minimize oversize, produce superior fragmentation, and improve crusher throughput? Sometimes, but no amount of explosives can overcome a poorly drilled pattern. Knowing the probable outcome of any changes in drilling and blasting is valuable in achieving success.

The fatigue-failure characteristics under high-frequency (10 KHz) cyclic loading were determined for a marble, granite, and quartzite. The rock speci-mens were cyclicly loaded (using a high-power piezoelectric sonic transducer) at a constant strain amplitude generated by forming a longitudinal standing stress (strain) wave in the cylindrical test specimen. The number of load cycles required to fail each rock type at a given strain amplitude was deter-mined. The fatigue fractures were tensile in nature and the fracture load amplitudes were as low as 30 pct of the static tensile strength. Also the internal heating of the rock caused by the material damping (internal friction) was measured. The damping and internal heat generation in the specimens was analyzed to show that nearly all of the power input can be accounted for as a change in enthalpy in the specimen. Using these results the thermal strain in the rock was calculated to evaluate its contribution to fatigue failure. The thermal strain was found to range up to 30 pct of the dynamic strain amplitude depending on the load amplitude and the number of load cycles. The specific energy required for failure was determined and possible applications of the high-frequency fatigue fragmentation process are discussed.

"Kaiser Resources Ltd. has completed feasibility studies resulting in approval of $277,500,000 for the construction of the Greenhills Surface Coal Mine, located 35 km north of Sparwood, B.C. The mine is designed to produce 1,800,000 tonnes per year of metallurgical coal over a 20-year period by conventional truck /shovel methods.The project is in the detailed design phase, with some preparation work being carried out on the site. The major construction activities are scheduled to commence in the spring of 1981. Mine development and pre-stripping will commence in July 1981, with first coal production scheduled for mid 1983.This paper will be a general description of the project and will include a discussion of the geology, reserves, mine planning, coal handling and processing, surface facilities and related topics.IntroductionProject DefinitionThe Greenhills Project is designed to produce, by conventional truck I shovel surface mining methods, 1,800,000 clean tonnes of metallurgical coal per year for twenty years . The production/ life constraints were chosen as being meaningful for planning and evaluation purposes after appraisal of the market potential and are not limited .by economic reserves. Substantial additional strippable reserves are available which would facilitate expansion of the proposed mine life and/ or capacity. In fact , all the facilities are designed so that they can be expanded in the future to accommodate a doubling of annual coal production, and certain portions of the coal processing facilities are being installed with an annual capacity of 3,600,000 tonnes. The mine will also produce approximately 2,400,000 clean tonnes of oxidized thermal coal, mostly in the first decade."

Tracey Khanna, Assistant Editor of UK?s Mining Magazine discusses some of the new and important environmental challenges, physical and social, that are facing mining companies. The tide of public opinion has turned strongly against those companies which are unable to show that they are practising responsible environmental stewardship. This is, no doubt, in part due to the recent focus of the international media on environmental issues and constantly improving means of communications, which has brought the whole subject of mining and the environment to those who, in the past, had only a limited awareness of the industry. Mining companies today face new and important challenges with regard to the environment, both physical and social. New technology and a greater understanding of waste management techniques has helped to bring about improved handling and disposal of mines wastes, so reducing some of the impacts. However, improved technology has also brought about the economic viability of exploiting increasingly lower-grade ore from open pits, resulting in a greater visual impact.

Paper presented at the conference Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume. 18pp., 12 refs. (Originally entitled: Tunnel roof diagnosis using a robotic sensor test bed.) An integral roof diagnosis method is proposed to assist in assessment of risk regarding the stability of an excavation. A Robotic Sensor Test Bed (RSTB) is being developed for the characterisation of roof stability. The sensor test bed consists of a sonic/ultrasonic wave response sensor, a laser surface profiler and a surface temperature sensor. These sensors are mounted on an articulated robot manipulator for performing remote-controlled or fully automated diagnoses. A number of laboratory and field sonic/ultrasonic tests were conducted. A high-energy ultrasonic transducer and an impact device were used to resonate rock slabs. The fracture depths of the slabs were found to be inversely related to the measured resonance frequencies. The agreement between identified and actual dimensions was acceptable. Field tests also showed that loose rock on the surface can be clearly distinguished from solid formation by comparing their wave responses. The robotic laser profiler part of the RSTB was used to measure surface geometry. Different scanning methods are being developed to achieve the fastest and most precise measurements and to provide pertinent information about rock joints and major fractures

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output. Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state requlatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

"Falcon Concentrators Inc. has developed a high capacity centrifuge for the recovery of fine, free gold as well as other metals and minerals which were previously thought to be unrecoverable by gravity means. Development started in the early 1980's and the first commercial operation was commissioned in 1986. Gold applications include scavenging conventional gravity and cyanidation circuit tailings, cleaning gravity concentrates, cleaning flotation concentrates to melting grade, scavenging flotation tailings, and placer mining. Recent development work by Falcon has expanded the applications scope of the centrifugal concentrator to include many minerals amenable to gravity concentration including iron, tin, industrial minerals, and hazardous wastes. This paper discusses this technology including its history, present applications, and future potential. OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFIJGAL CONCENTRATIONUsing centrifugal force to enhance the separation of materials by differential specific gravity has been researched for over a century. Many attempts have been made to concentrate minerals in high gravity fields. Patents were granted on this subject as early as 1891 (see Figure 1). Patenting activity continued into the 1920's and has been relatively quiet since. It is significant that no centrifugal system of gravity concentration has been broadly accepted by the mineral processing community until recently. Much of the world's reserve of mineral deposits which are amenable to conventional gravity concentration technology (coarse-grained) have been mined and therefore there is an increasing demand for technology which can economically recover the fine-grained gravity recoverable minerals in the remaining deposits. In addition, centrifugal concentration can play an increasing role in solving environmental problems by offering an inexpensive method of concentrating hazardous materials such as uranium, plutonium, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. The overall cost of disposing of these substances safely can be drastically reduced if they are recovered into a concentrated form prior to disposal."

The Bureau of Mines has found considerable lack of uniformity in style and content of record books used for reporting the results of examinations made by coal-mine officials. These books range from elaborate forms designed for specific examining and operating procedures at certain large mines to simple composition books, tablets, and pocket-style notebooks at other mines. Examination of thousands of these record books discloses that the reports of many examinations are so brief and so poorly worded that they cannot be understood readily. The contents, in some instances, appear to be deliberately ambiguous. The value of keeping accurate accounts of safety inspections in coal mines is often underestimated. Well-kept records reflect managerial attitude and indicate well-governed operations as well as training of official personnel to conform to considered policy and regulations and if necessary, may serve as documentary evidence to protect the mine officials and the operators.

A 1984 Bureau of Mines investigation identified ho mineral resources in the Wilderness Study Area (WSA). However, four prospects in the WSA contain anomalous amounts of copper and silver minerals; one had traces of gold. Stratabound copper-silver occurrences appear to be prevalent. Quartz veins in the WSA locally contain trace gold, and one mine adjacent to the area produced some gold in the late 1800's. The WSA is underlain principally by Precambrian and early to middle Paleozoic quartzites, argillites, dolomites and limestones that have been complicated by faulting, generally tilted northeastward, and thrust southeastward over sequences of late Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The stratabound copper-silver occurrences and gold-quartz veins are in Precambrian and Cambrian rocks in the western part of the WSA, as are similar deposits regionally. Sand and gravel, and limestone are abundant, but plentiful resources of these commodities are nearer established markets. In November 1983 there were 5 small groups of current claims oh the WSA boundary; none are patented claims. Probably less than 35 claims have been located within the WSA, mostly in the northwestern portion; hut over 100 claims have been located outside, near the northwestern boundary. Oil and gas leases nearly surround the boundary and 6 extend up to 1 mile into the study area. There has been no recorded mineral production from within the WSA. From 3 to 5 miles to the west, several lode nines in the Johnnie district have produced several million dollars worth of gold from quartz veins, and some silver and lead from galena-calcite veins. These veins generally trend northeasterly and dip northwesterly and probably do hot extend into the study area.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

The objectives of this investigation were to determine the strain propagation laws for a strain pulse in salt and to compare the seismic effects from the detonation of different explosives in salt. The investigation showed that a strain propagation law of the type, e = K(R/W 1/3 ) n, and a strain energy propagation law of the type, Ea/W 1/3 = K(R/WI/3)b , are valid in salt. A change in the regression law coefficient, n , was noted with strain level. A similar change in b was inferred because strain energy is proportional to the square of strain amplitude. Particle velocity data may be used interchangeably with strain data under the test conditions.
