There are no producing or developing mines or active mining claims in the Deschutes Canyon RARE II study area. Only two prospects were found; they have no identified potential for mineral resources. Thin diatomite deposits occur in the Pliocene Madras Formation. Development of sand and gravel deposits in the area could not favorably compete with similar deposits in the surrounding area which are closer to points of use. By mid-1982, active oil and gas lease applications covered about 25 percent of the area, a reduction from nearly 100 percent in early 1981. No holes were drilled for oil and gas exploration. INTRODUCTION Personnel of the Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center conducted a mineral investigation of the Deschutes Canyon RARE II area during the summer of 1982. The area, about 10 mi (16 km) southwest of Madras, Oregon, covers 10,890 acres (4,407 ha) in the Crooked River National Grasslands (fig. 1). The Deschutes River has incised a deep canyon into the north sloping elevated lava plain near the transitional boundary of the High Lava Plains and the Deschutes-Umatilla Plateau geomorphic divisions (Baldwin, 1964, p. 20).

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). Experiments were carried out using the cyclone to treat coal in the size range -2.0+0 mm. The diameters of the cyclone outlets (vortex finder and spigot) were varied to study their effects on cyclone performance. The cyclone products were deslimed over a screen with an aperture of 0.075 mm. The performance of the separator was studied for washing coarse coal (-2.0+0.075 mm) and fines (-0.075 mm). Performance curves were plotted for the separation of -2.0+0.075 mm coal. The concept of a generalised distribution curve was adopted to predict cyclone performance. A mathematical representation was derived from the generalised distribution curve. The specific gravity of separation for individual size fractions showed a decreasing trend with decreasing particle size down to 0.85 mm, beyond which a reverse trend was noted. Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. "Drawing upon the experiences of a gold extraction plant startup in the Southern Pacific, this paper will describe the importance of the commissioning phases to the project outcomes to achieve early target production despite an overall time compression to attain full plant production. Some of the highlights of the paper include: impact of roles played by the Owner’s construction and operations representatives during project commissioning, the formation of a capable and competent “Mod Squad,” availability of trained operating personnel, control over work priorities and the scope of work needed to bring the plant to safe initial operations. The commissioning team comprised subject matter experts skilled in process technology supported by “generalists” thoroughly conversant in overall plant operations. The merits of a structured team approach to brainstorm and resolve commissioning challenges as opposed to direction from individual subject matter experts is discussed. IntroductionStartup or commissioning is a unique period in the life of a project. Each stage of a project-exploration, feasibility, design, construction, commissioning, initial operations and continuing operations-requires special talents, know-how, and practices. Each stage makes particular demands of the people involved. Initial operations are no exception.Having experienced the 1997 startup phases of oxide and sulfide facilities for a gold extraction plant at a remote island in the Southern Pacific, I can attest to the many challenges and rewards. Commissioning for both facilities was extremely successful and brought the entire project on line well ahead of the targeted completion dates. Using this specific project as an example, this paper will highlight some of the key features of project commissioning. In this paper, the term “pre-commissioning” denotes all activities that lead to mechanical completion; “commissioning” occurs when feed is introduced; and “initial operations” are defined as the duration when operations accepts the system/facility and takes over."

"INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk-type nagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high-grade steels are made.The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequent in Swedish technical journals before 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with iron ore plus the necessary quantity of solid reducing agent and then firing in an ordinary ceramic kiln. Two types of sponge iron were made in this way: (1) An inferior, high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and solid reducing agent; and (2) a high-grade, low-sulfur product made by filling the sagger with alternete layers of unmixed ore and reducer, yielding sintered disks of metallic iron particles.Swedish disk-type sponge iron of interest to the steel industry because it has a very low sulfur content, even when made by the use of low-grade, high-sulfur coals for reducing and firing. The Swedish product also contains little siliceous gangue residue and is almost phos¬phorus-free. To those features must be added the high metallic-iron content -90 to 96 percent - and freedom from even small amounts of the metals that are undesirable in steel making.The details essential for successful operation of this procedure are not known, especially as regards improvements said to have been made since 19;2. The Bureau of Mines therefore decided to determine some of these missing details, and this report records the results of the first set of experiments on the manufacture of brickyard or sagger sponge iron."

Fracturing of rock at low stress levels can be a source of unexpected problems in rock engineering: • the resulting instability can be a safety hazard; • in very brittle rocks it may be associated with violent failure of the rock and strainbursting (rockbursting); • it usually leads to an unexpected requirement for rock support, with time and cost implications; • in rock boring projects, it may result in fracture of the rock ahead of the bored face and in the walls of the bore behind the face. This may lead to cutter head vibration, increased cutter wear and consequently decreased performance and increased costs. Examples of situations in which fracturing of rock at very low stress levels has been observed will be described. This will include details or estimates of the in situ stress magnitudes and the rock strengths involved. Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

In 1999, Eramet bought the ferromanganese plants in Porsgrunn and Sauda (Norway) and Marietta (USA). With an ownership in the Comilog mine, the plants will operate with a high amount of Comilog ore. The properties of Comilog ore are reviewed and compared to a number of industrial operations. Important ore properties are chemical and mineralogical analyses, CO reactivity and mechanical strength. The advantage of Comilog ore is its contribution to lower energy and coke consumption. However, special precautions must be taken regarding the amount of fines and water introduced in the furnace, as Comilog ore is more porous compared to other Mn ores.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

Dans ses opérations de traitement de concentré de zinc, l?usine de Zinc Électrolytique du Canada à Valleyfield génère un résidu minier appelé « jarosite ». Jusqu?en 1998, le jarosite était transporté hydrauliquement dans des bassins construits en argile. Le jarosite sédimenté possède une consistance très molle (impossible de circuler à pied sur le résidu consolidé) avec une eau interstitielle acide contenant des teneurs élevées en métaux. Ces caractéristiques particulières au jarosite rendaient très coûteuses la construction et la fermeture des bassins de résidus. En 1998, Zinc Électrolytique du Canada a implanté un nouveau procédé, développé chez Noranda, dont le principal objectif était de stabiliser chimiquement et physiquement le jarosite. Un nouveau concept de déposition a été élaboré pour le nouveau résidu minier appelé « jarofix ». Les grandes caractéristiques du nouveau procédé et du concept de déposition sont : ? Le jarosite est lavé et déshydraté à l?usine avec un système de filtre; ? De la chaux, du ciment et de l?eau sont ajoutés pour former le jarofix; ? Le jarofix est transporté par camions jusqu?à l?aire d?accumulation; ? À l?aire d?accumulation, le résidu est géré selon un concept d?empilement. L?élaboration du concept d?empilement et de l?aire d?accumulation devait tenir compte des caractéristiques de déposition du jarofix, de sa résistance à l?érosion hydrique et éolienne, de la gestion de l?eau de ruissellement, de la faisabilité de construire les digues de ceinture en utilisant du jarofix durci et de la nécessité de restaurer progressivement l?aire d?accumulation. Le déchargement du jarofix se fait à partir d?une rampe qui progresse avec une pente ascendante pour développer un front de déversement de plus en plus haut. La hauteur du tas de jarofix atteindra 30 m au centre du site. L?aménagement initial de 1998 a inclut une digue d?amorce de 3 m de hauteur, une rampe de déversement de 8 m de hauteur et un bassin pour la gestion de l?eau de ruissellement. Les propriétés du jarofix consolidé dans l?aire d?accumulation sont déterminées annuellement. Le jarofix durci possède la consistance et la résistance d?une argile très raide. Sa conductivité hydraulique est similaire à celle d?un silt et il résiste bien à l?érosion éolienne. Après trois années de déposition, la température du jarofix au milieu du dépôt demeure élevée. Le jarofix durci est facile à excaver et à compacter, ce qui en fait un excellent matériau pour la construction des digues de ceinture en périphérie du site.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.

Identifying, quantifying and minimizing technical risks associated to investment decisions is a key challenge for the minerals industry decision takers and investors. However, risk analysis in most bankable mine feasibility studies are based on stochastic modelling of project NPV which, in most cases, fail to provide decision makers with a truly comprehensive analysis of risks associated to technical and management uncertainty and, as the result, are of little use for risk management and project optimization. This paper presents a value-chain risk management approach where project risk is evaluated for each step of the project lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure, and risk management is performed as part of a stepwise value added optimization process.
