"The neglect of including the toxic metal mercury in the list of escaping elements (Zodrow, CIM Bulletin, September 1982, pp. 138-140) was pointed out to the author in a private letter by J.E. Rehder, dated September 21, 1982. I welcome this opportunity to present my preliminary mercury research data based on coal investigations supported by N.S.E.R.C and the University College.As mercury is a volatile element and liquid at room temperature, special analytical techniques are required to determine concentrations in whole coal. In the investigation, the coal is analyzed by flameless atomic absorption with a lower detection limit of approximately 10 parts per billion, which, however, is a function of the ash contents of the coals (personal communication, J.L. Brooker, XRAL, 1981).Coal seams of the Sydney Coalfield studied so far include: the Point Aconi, a thin shaly coal, the Upper Bonar, an overrider of the Harbour seam, and the Harbour, Shoemaker and McAulay seams, all of which are shown in stratigraphic succession in Figure 1. The seams have been channel-sampled taking 15-cm coal intervals as one sample for analysis. One channel sample has been investigated from each of the seams listed (two channels were taken from the Point Aconi seam), resulting in 38 samples. Table 1 shows the results, which include mercury contents, ash and total sulphur per sample interval. Figure 2 is a frequency distribution of the 38 determinations."

There are at least a dozen methods of selectively removing cerium from a mixture of the rare earth elements (REE) including separation techniques based on the oxidation of cerium to the quadrivalent state. Several of the oxidation processes have been operated on a commercial scale, others have been tested and in some cases are part of proposed flowsheets. In this paper, we describe and compare the various methods. We also present preliminary estimates of the costs of early Ce removal and discuss recovery and purity aspects of the options.

There are numerous mines throughout the world that have open pit highwalls developed partially or wholly in soil or soil-like materials. Soil-like materials are considered to include soils (either transported or residual) and highly weathered rock, which may have soil-like behavior. These materials generally have characteristics or material properties that vary considerably from those of moderately weathered or fresh rock. Given these differences, it is important to consider the characteristics of soil-like materials to design safe open pit slopes. In the design of open pit slopes in soil-like materials, it is important to recognize the behavior of these materials is strongly dependent upon their mineralogy, degree of weathering, cementation, stress history, depositional history, and presence of water. As a result, soil-like materials may contain one or more of the following characteristics that can have a significant effect slope stability and design: - Relict structural features (joints, faults, etc), - Sensitivity to moisture (both wetting and drying), - Zones of alteration with variable strength and drainage characteristics, - Zones of low permeability creating perched ground water conditions, and - Undrained and drained strain softening or strain hardening behavior.

Authorities that regulate environmental issues pertaining to industrial wastes in South Africa regard landfill disposal as the only effective environmental management option for slag and other inorganic by-products from the ferro-alloy industry. Metallurgical slags are widely utilised in civil engineering and construction applications in other countries in the world and in line with the overall philosophy of conserving mineral and other natural resources, these materials should be assessed for the possibility of resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses. This presentation describes a risk-based approach for the assessment of by-products from the ferro-alloy industry for alternative use. Once a by-product from an industrial process has been identified for alternative use, its intended use would be defined, but it will not be possible to control its actual use or misuse in society, nor will it be possible to control its fate during the application life cycle. In the interest of protection of human health and the environment, potential risks associated with the handling and uses of a material throughout its life cycle therefore have to be quantified. The assessment has to include both human health and ecological risks and must cover the entire life cycle of a product, from its production up to its end-of-life disposal. The presentation introduces the concept of tiered risk assessment and demonstrates how this applies in the overall assessment of by-products from metallurgical industry sector for safe use in society.

This paper presents the variability of responses of paste backfill specimens that have been prepared with varying binding agent and binder combinations, when subjected to uniaxial compressive strength testing. A testing program conducted for an underground operating mine to produce cost efficient paste fill recipes using four different binding agents, in various ratios and combinations, is presented to illustrate the responses. These binding agents are Normal Portland Cement Type-10 (NPC T-10), oxidation or sulphide attack resistant binder (Binder A), replacement binder B (Binder B), and replacement binder C (Binder C). The paste fill recipes were prepared at 2, 3.5 and 5% binder content at varying binder combinations, at fixed size and tested in a Material Testing System (MTS) under constant strain rate conditions following cure times of 7, 14, 28, 56, 90, 112, 180 and 240 days. The results of tests suggested that the strength data clearly shows a trend of increasing strength with increasing binder content but not necessarily cure time. It is noted that all the blends achieved dramatic increases in strength up to 28 days of cure and then either increased or decreased moderately beyond 28 days curing, depending on the binder content and binder combination. The moderate decrease is apparent for the 2% paste fill blends and in some binder combinations of the 3.5 and 5% blends, which indicated lackluster performance beyond 28 days curing. This lackluster strength performance indicated that the binder content and combination may not be sufficient for the paste fill to achieve complete hydration and acquire adequate strength performance beyond 28 days. This study indicated that economic paste fill recipes can be designed with confidence using affordable alternative binders. However, it is noted that these alternate binders cannot be used as stand alone binders but should be used in combination with NPC to facilitate hydration of the paste fill.

This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in July, 1931, as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 313, under the title of "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to June 30, 1931." Changes in that list were authorized in August, September, October, November, and December, 1931, and. January and March, 1932, as published in Reports of Investigations 3l40, 3147, 3l50, 3155, 3158, 3161, and 3163, respectively. The wastes from marble extraction in the Thasos- Kavalla-Drama region of northeastern Greece could be utilised as a new source of high-quality white carbonate fillers for the European market. Large deposits, satisfactory properties, acceptable processing costs and environmental benefits are among the factors that would have a positive bearing on a proposal for their use in this way. DTH, the waste arising from dolomitic marble quarrying operations on the island of Thasos, appears to be the more suitable material than DA waste from Nikissiani on the mainland because of the lower cost of primary grinding and the higher production rate of ultrafines with a mean particle size of 5 micrometres (the optimum size for filler properties in the case of both DTH and DA), its superior whiteness, the benefits that such use would bring to a very severe and complex environmental problem and the lower transport cost

While investigating methods for determining the best temperatures for hot-working experimental stainless steels, the Bureau of Mines Albany Metallurgy Research Center developed a machine in which hot-twist tests could be made in a few minutes. This machine is similar to some used previously except that specimens are heated by induction instead of by radiation, and their temperature is measured by a calibrated radiation-detection unit instead of by a thermocouple. In. developing the technique for using the new machine, tests were made on specimens of medium-carbon steel, mild steel, and AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) type 304 stainless steel. Tests also were made on as-cast specimens and preworked specimens of experimental AISI type 202, low austenitic stainless steel, and as-cast specimens of AISI type 301 experimental stainless steel. The optimum hot-working temperatures were determined for all types of steel tested. Also, data were gathered on the effects of test speed and temperature on torsional strength and the effect of twisting on tensile stress in the specimen.

Bored cast in situ piles are highly susceptible to construction defects like necking, discontinuity in concreting, poor compaction of concrete, improper end bearing condition due to inadequate cleaning of bore hole, exposure of reinforcement, segregation of concrete etc. There is a necessity to understand the behavior of piles so as to design effective foundation system. In this paper investigations of two field cases were discussed to bring out the effect of defective piles. In one case improper end bearing has been discussed for a concrete pile of length of 45m and diameter equal to 1.2 m and is reinforced with 32 no's of 28mm diameter steel bars and in another case necking of the pile has been discussed. Further model piles with preformed defects have been tested in laboratory to bring out the influence of defective piles.

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

The use of industrial minerals by the chemical industry as raw materials for manufacturing and in processing spans a wide assortment of minerals. This chapter aims to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Its objective, to describe the uses of industrial minerals in the manufacture of chemicals, is attained by considering minerals used by the chemical industry in terms of the chemical element required and by giving particular emphasis to market factors. The mineral aspect, which is covered in the commodity chapters, is subordinated and attention is focused on the chemical and market aspects. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. The elements derived from petroleum, hydrogen and carbon, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potash, and nitrogen for fertilizers and titanium dioxide for pigments. After eliminating on this basis, our definition leaves six elements of major importance: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry as shown in Table 1 "Salt Brine Derivatives" (Anon., 1967), which charts the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake type brines which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland type brines from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake type yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak type produced mainly for lithium. Table 2 (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the chief industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products.

The study comprised of the investigation into the sensitization characteristics of AISI 409 titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel during low heat input welding. AISI 409 is a fully ferritic stainless steel used in catalytic converters and tubing for automotive exhaust systems due to the supposition that sensitization does not occur during low heat input welding. Two plates of 2 and 4 mm were tested for sensitization during low heat input welding. The study confirmed that chromium carbide (M23C6) precipitation occurs on the grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone with consequent depletion of Cr adjacent to the grain boundaries during welding. In the 2 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.1 kJ/mm to above 0.25 kJ/mm and in the 4 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.2 to 0.9 kJ/mm. Ti stabilization is ineffective at the heat inputs used in this investigation due to the rapid cooling rate through the temperature region where TiC precipitates. The presence of N was found to be detrimental since it consumes Ti on cooling, forming TiN, effectively lowering the amount of Ti available for TiC formation during rapid cooling after welding. Annealing for 5 minutes at 725°C does not improve the sensitization characteristics of the welded plate. There is a linear increase in grain size as heat input increases. The resistance to pitting corrosion decreases in the sensitized, welded plate in theheat-affected zone adjacent to the fusion line of welding. Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

A power-line proximity-warning (PLPW) system must have a high probability of detection (alarm activation at a specific distance), low probability of false alarm, and minimal set-up and maintenance. Tests of electric-field sensors have not demonstrated a dependable alarm distance. Alternative sensing methods such as microwave radar, optical radar, and sonar can meet the requirements by direct measurement of the range from the boom to the power line. Suitable microwave techniques include RF pulse, chirp FM/CW, and baseband pulse. Baseband-pulse radar has adequate range capability and does not require expensive microwave components. The radar cross section of a power-transmission cable is adequate for its detection optical-radar systems based upon LEDs and photodiodes are inexpensive, but can achieve only marginal performance in this application because of their limited modulation bandwidth. Since laser diodes and cryogenically cooled photosensors must be used to achieve the desired range resolution, the cost of an optical-radar system is greater than that of a microwave radar system. Sonar systems are feasible, but are not as precise and cost at least as much as baseband-pulse-radar systems. The performance of both optical-radar and sonar systems is degraded by dirt, necessitating the inclusion of a "windshield wiper.' Baseband radar appears well suited to the PLPW application. The cost of a baseband-pulse radar PLPW system is expected to be comparable to that of an electric-field PLPW system. Development and testing of an experimental model are therefore recommended.

High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future.
