This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1991 (revised) and 1992. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). South Africa hosts some of the world?s largest known resources and reserves of minerals that are strategically important to the global economy. The country?s mining industry contributes significantly to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product, export earnings, corporate tax receipts, remuneration earnings, and employment. Platinum, gold, and coal are significant minerals because they make the largest individual contributions to these economic indicators. Several factors impact the cash cost performance of operations that mine these minerals, thus affecting the future sustainability of these operations, which are generally ?price-takers?. It is therefore important that the cash cost performance of operations for these key minerals is analysed. Commercially available industry cost curves can be used for such analysis. However, some companies may not be able to afford to purchase these curves. This paper presents a simple Microsoft Excel® algorithm for constructing the curves. It also demonstrates how the constructed industry curves were used to analyse the cash cost performance of South African mining operations for the three selected minerals for the period 2007 to 2011, which included the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis revealed that the operations were affected by several global and local factors during the review period. "There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."

ABSTRACT Sooner or later, every producing mine faces the question of fill. This paper invites consideration of mill tailings as an economical, efficient, and quantitatively adequate source of such fill. Some of the advantages, disadvantages, methods of utilization, and methods of treating mill tailings for sand recovery are covered. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SAND FILL DISREGARDING economic com-promise, that material which supports the greatest applied load with the least compression is the best choice for fill. Table I, reproduced from U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 60, is offered as evidence of the adequacy of hydraulically placed sand. Table II gives the results of tests made in an effort to determine the reason for the difference between load hearing qualities of dry-placed and hydraulically-placed sand. From these, it would appear that hydraulic placing gives a denser initial packing, with corresponding higher, and faster development of, load bearing qualities. Assuming this to be true, then if sand from mill tailings can be placed underground economically, it is the superior fill material. Table III summarizes cost data available. The most cursory glance through the available references (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) will show .that the major benefit from the adoption of sand fill is a decrease in the non-productive fill ?cycle of a working place. This, it is estimated, increases the output of an individual stope by from 25 to 50 per cent. The advantage of reducing the number of required working places for a constant daily production is obvious.

A mobile vacuum sweeper to remove loose coal and coal dust from underground coal mine workings was designed, built, tested, and evaluated. The design was based on an extensive test program. Pick up and conveying rates vs. air volumes, velocities, and nozzle shapes were determined for coal rubble in a laboratory pneumatic handling system. A gas/solids separation system was developed and tested in the laboratory capable of separating the solids loading from the vacuum system air stream to the very high degree required to preclude degradation of the ambient (mine) air. Two designs were made, one for belt conveyor and one for general district cleanup. The belt cleanup machine was chosen for test and demonstrated in an underground coal mine performing cleanup work in belt haulageways and on ribs.

This investigation was divided into two major phases. Phase I of the study was an examination of the occurrence and production of acid water within the Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho. The second phase of the project involved the study of water movement through an abandoned tailings pile. Mineralogy and hydrogeology were determined to be the two most important factors in the acid mine drainage problem. Low pH water was formed in the mine in areas of lead-zinc ore rich in pyrite. Water movement in the mine was important in the production of acid and the transportation of heavy metals. Areas of recharge to the mine were identified. A data collection network was installed to monitor water quality and quantity changes. The quantity of acid drainage from the mine was found to vary directly with surface runoff events. The study of the abandoned tailings pile was performed to determine the characteristics of water movement through the tailings material and the resultant impact on the hydrologic environment. The Page Tailings Pile, abandoned in 1969, was utilized as a study area. An extensive network of piezometers and meteorological data collection sites were installed in and near the pile. Data collected to date indicate the presence of a ground-water mound under the east half of the pile. Some transfer of ions from the tailings pile to the ground-water system has been detected.

Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. It is easy to demonstrate the importance of aggregates in any conversation about infrastructure and other engineering artefacts. Peoples around the world have made use of stone to enrich and enhance their lives since the earliest days of civilisation. In New Zealand, Maori used hard durable rocks for weapons, tools, and basic structures. European settlement accelerated the use of quarried materials and formed the basis for development of our society as we see it today. Logic might suggest that the quarrying sector would be recognised positively for, and encouraged to continue to contribute to, this underpinning of the way we are. The reality is æNot In Most Back YardsÆ. Why? The rock is where it's always been (often overlooked) and our æsocialÆ environment is today's hard place. For a resource-based business in New Zealand, that environment is principally the Resource Management Act, with the widespread power it has distributed to anyone prepared to invest their time. This coupled with a lack of leadership and direction in the implementation of the Act has created a climate that stifles development and diverts energy and resources to æplaying the gameÆ rather than ælifting the gameÆ. Perhaps the real costs of this are not yet widely recognised. The paper will draw mainly on the experience of endeavouring to consent a ægreenfieldÆ quarry in the Waikato region. This is supported by commentary based on nearly 10 years of ælivingÆ with the RMA at sites across much of New Zealand. RMA Scorecard Summary: Effects based? Rarely. Level playing field? No. Maori Consultation? Could do better. Efficient use of resources? No. Timely? No. Is it working for other sectors? Certainly not the quarrying industry's customers and end users.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

Tailings embankments can develop a high phreatic surface if the original design for the embankment does not include drainage facilities or if existing drainage facilities become ineffective. Subsequent raises can develop a seepage surface due to a high phreatic surface that can lead to stability problems. The U. S. Bureau of Mines amended contract J0100013 to initiate this study of horizontal drains in tailings embankments. This study developed a technique for determining the length of and spacing between parallel drains through the use of the finite element model UNSAT2. The analysis is based on the combined output of a vertical planar mesh and a horizontal planar mesh. The slot opening in the drain pipe and the length of the perforated section are determined from an analogy to water well design. The pipe diameter and gradient can be determined from Manning's equation. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt at horizontal drain design using a finite element model. Additional research is recommended in this area.

A 3-year study was conducted to evaluate the problems and benefits of using vegetation to stabilize tailing from a potential Minnesota copper-nickel milling operation. The project consisted of three separate investigations: a waste characterization study, a greenhouse study and a field study. With few exceptions, the physical and chemical characteristics of the tai ling were found to lie within the range of properties of Minnesota soils. The tailing lacks organic matter; is deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; and may contain elevated levels of soluble salts and heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel. Numerous grasses, forbs and woody plants will tolerate the tailing as a rooting medium. Peat incorporation and topsoil dressing provided few benefits to the revegetation process which were not provided by a fertilizer application. With fertilization, grass/legume production in the tailing was comparable to local agricultural yields. Concentration of heavy metals in grasses grown in the tailing were generally below suggested tolerance limits for plants and animal forage. Legumes tended to accumulate higher concentrations of copper and nickel, and metal uptake of most plants was positively correlated with rate of fertilization. Tailing drainage water contained elevated levels of heavy metals, and establishment of vegetation had little effect on the quantity and quality of tailing drainage water. However, topsoil dressing significantly increased drainage water volume when compared to unvegetated control plots. Copper-nickel tailing revegetation recommendations were developed.

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Acidic and basic uranium leach plant residues located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, Ariz., were successfully stabilized against wind erosion using a relatively low-cost chemical method. An elastomeric polymer chemical was applied to the dike areas and a calcium magnesium lignosulfonate to the beach areas of three tailings ponds. The water-soluble chemicals were applied with an automated sprinkling system. The stabilization cost was $335 per acre for the 34.5-acre tract.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155. The purpose of this work was to obtain operational data on retrofit noise control treatments suitable for use in coal preparation plants. This data was obtained by evaluating the performance of four categories of noise control treatments which were installed in a commercial coal preparation plant. The four categories of treatments were resilient screen decks, resilient impact pads, chute liners, and curtains. The selection, installation and initial evaluation of the treatments was documented in the Volume I report issued in 1977. This Volume II report summarizes the results of the long-term evaluation of the original treatments, as well as some additional tests which were conducted on elastomer-clad (resilient) screen decks. This project demonstrated the feasibility of a number of retrofit noise control treatments, some of which also proved to be quite durable over the long term.

The use of consumable.-electrode arc melting as a production technology is growing. One advantageous feature of this process is that it avoids ingot contamination by soluble crucible materials by employing a chilled metal crucible. Because the thermal balance under these conditions is rather delicate and does not necessarily provide a favorable environment for solidification, catastrophic imbalances can occur. The effectiveness and mechanistic roles of various factors are mostly unknown, and more intelligent insight regarding the distribution of temperature and heat is needed. Experience has provided several pertinent observations, some of which are quite superficial. The most meaningful data have resulted from studies of molten pool shapes and sizes and from measurements of heat flow through crucible walls. Overall experience, intuitively interpreted and supplemented, is sufficient nevertheless as a basis for a boundary-value treatment of the problem. A mathematical analysis based on a separation of variables, using conventional differential equation methods, provides a useful solution. For a cylindrical ingot, the temperature varies as a Bessel function of an argument proportional to the radius and as an exponential function of longitudinal position. Trial calculations using the problem solution seem to verify the general correctness of the result as compared with experience. The role and nature of solution parameters are also clarified, though not entirely resolved. It is revealed that the barrier to heat flow at the ingot-crucible surface has a prominent influence. Utility of the model embodied in the problem solution is readily demonstrated by considering a variety of contemporary questions about arc melting, and it is hoped that utility can be enhanced by improvement of the model.

Although many SAG operators may agree that on-line measurement of SAG feed-size is an attractive notion, applying this information in a control strategy that recovers the investment, engineering time, and maintenance is not necessarily straightforward. The P. T. Freeport Split-Online system was justified based on the assumption that SAG feed-size could be used in a feed-forward control strategy either at the regulatory or expert system control level. Something like “as the feed size changes adjust the throughput to avoid under or overloading the mill” was envisioned. However, following installation and calibration, Cluster Analysis showed that such an approach would not be successful. However, the sensor has been successfully integrated into Freeport’s grinding control strategy other ways. It provides an input to the Kalman filter parameter estimator used in a model-based control strategy that optimizes throughput and grind. The Split sensor also provides a characteristic feed size parameter for use in an on-line work index estimator. This paper describes the calibration and installation of the Split SAG feed-size analyzer, and reviews the evolution of its use in the Freeport C3 grinding circuit control strategy.

A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.
