"The Presidio Parkway Project will reconstruct approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of highway, including seven new bridges, three new cut-and-cover tunnels, and a new undercrossing connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the City of San Francisco, California. The project site is approximately 5.6 miles (9 km) from the San Andreas Fault, capable of producing magnitude 8 earthquakes. Seismic hazards include strong ground shaking, soil liquefaction, ground settlement, and lateral spreading. The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) long. The MPT site underlain by loose sandy soils susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading. Excessive racking and permanent displacement due to lateral spreading are identified as the main seismic vulnerabilities. Analyses showed that without ground improvement, tunnel racking of over 5 inches (13 cm) and permanent lateral tunnel displacement of up to 15 feet (4.6 m) could be anticipated. Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) is proposed to mitigate slope displacements and increase lateral stiffness of the foundation materials to reduce tunnel racking. A series of 2-D fully dynamic time domain analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of CDSM, confirm that performance criteria are met, and optimize the CDSM geometry and replacement ratio. The use of CDSM reduced the permanent tunnel displacement from over 15 feet (4.6 m) to less than 1 inch (2.5 cm). Tunnel racking was also reduced significantly. The adopted analytical approach presented herein can be considered for future tunnel design projects in seismically active areas.Introduction The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are an integral component of the Presidio Parkway project which will replace the existing facility with a new multi-lane roadway between the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco. The MPT are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) in length. As shown on Figure 1, the project site is located in a seismically active area, about 5.6 miles (9 km) east of the San Andreas Fault and 12.5 miles (20 km) west of the Hayward Fault. The San Andreas Fault can generate magnitude 8 earthquakes while the Hayward Fault is capable of producing magnitude 7.3 earthquakes. The design Peak Bedrock Acceleration (PBA) is 0.46g for the upper level design earthquake. The project alignment is shown on Figure 2."

"The Wabush Mines project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in Western Labrador. The town of Wabush along with the mining and concentrating facilities are located 640 air miles from Montreal, and 734 air miles from St. John's. The operation has been in production since late 1964.While mining and concentrating operations are located in Labrador, the pelletizing facilities are situated 275 miles south at Sept-Iles, Quebec. Dedicated in 1965, Wabush produces six million tons of high quality iron ore pellets annually. The company employs 1, 550 people at Wabush and the Pointe Noire plant at Sept-Iles.Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of three companies -The Steel Company of Canada, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. and the remaining 58% by the Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. is in turn owned by six companies: The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Inland Steel Company, Interlake Inc., Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Company, Finsider International S.A. and Pickands Mather & Company which is also managing agent.The town of Wabush is set in a remote part of Northern Canada accessible only by rail and air transportation. But this in no way has hindered the growth and development of the area. Modern housing units, shopping facilities, airport and of course, recreational facilities are all patt of every day living amenities, an accepted aprt of southern communities, but quite unique for northern isolated mining localities."

his paper reports an investigation aimed at optimizing the compaction of granulated hard-metal powder for the production of cutting tool inserts. The optimal compaction is that which yields optimal shrinkage during sintering, i.e. minimum porosity in the sintered part. Extensive compaction tests on 23 different hard-metal powders have been carried out and have shown that the ideal ?green density? of a hard-metal compact, i.e. the density after compaction, increases linearly with the apparent density of the powder. On the basis of this result, an equation has been derived, which allows one to predict the optimal shrinkage that a hard-metal compact undergoes during sintering once the following data are known: the required sintered density, the volatile content of the powder and the apparent density of the powder. Since these data are available to the tooling designer, this equation allows one to design tooling for the compaction of hard-metal, which leads to optimal shrinkage

Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.

Hematite floatability from two low grade banded iron ores of India, namely banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) and banded hematite jasper (BHJ) using fatty acids and amine as the collectors is investigated under identical physico-chemical conditions. The results indicated that hematite present in BHQ ore is easy to float using both the collectors, compared to BHJ ore. The difference of flotability between the two banded iron ores is that quartz grains are coarser and well liberated below 100 micron size in case of BHQ compared to BHJ ore. In case of BHJ ore, fine hematite and quartz grains are intimately inter-grown and are dispersed in thick jasper bands leading to liberation problems. Besides that, dusty jasper particles coat over hematite surface in case of BHJ ore during the process of grinding, which hinders specific adsorption of collector on hematite or quartz surfaces. This is substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flotation studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve ~64% Fe with ~67% recovery from a BHQ ore using both anionic and cationic collectors from a feed containing around 38% Fe. In contrast, the hematite recovery in BHJ ore was poor. Differences in the ore characteristics that affect the flotability of hematite present in both the ores are compared. Much of the land reclaimed since enactment of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act is over-compacted. Research has shown that excessive compaction in replaced growing media is detrimental to establishment of trees. If trees are to be grown on reclaimed surface mined sites, something must be done to alleviate this excessive compaction. Dry bulk density and penetration resistance are two soil parameters that can be used to indicate the level of compaction in reclaimed growing media. The University of Kentucky has developed test cells on reclaimed sites at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky to determine the impact of tillage (ripping) on soil compaction and tree survival rate. The ripping methods being evaluated include shallow tillage using conventional farm equipment and deep tillage using a dozer with a ripping arm. The impact of organic soil supplements on soil physical properties and tree survival rates is also being evaluated at the site. The organic soil supplements being evaluated include application of hardwood bark and application of straw and mulch. Each test cell has been planted with various species of trees, and for the first two years, data have been collected at these test cells for soil dry bulk density, penetration depth and resistance, and survival rate of trees. These data are currently being correlated to determine how ripping and the application of organic soil supplements affects the relationship between soil compaction and tree survival rate.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) is improving the sewer system in the Natomas area of Sacramento, CA. The Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) system is an ongoing series of tunnel pipeline projects that will provide sewer conveyance for all residents of northeast Sacramento County to the New Natomas Pumping Station, located North of downtown Sacramento, also in the city of Sacramento limits. The New Natomas Pumping Station then carries wastewater flowsto the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove via the existing Lower Northwest Interceptor. The Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, inc. and J.F. Shea (TSJV) were awarded the UNWI 1&2 project in late September, 2007. The planned 5.8 km (3.65 mile) construction route for UNWI 1&2 begins at the New Natomas Pump Station and runs north along the East Drainage Canal to the begin-ning of UNWI 3&4 at Bridgecross Drive. UNWI 1&2 includes approximately 5.8 km (19,240 feet) of 3.65 m (144 inch) inside diameter pipe using Earth Pressure Balance Tunneling Methods. The project also includes 16.76 m (55 feet) of 3.04 m (120-inch) diameter interceptor pipeline, twenty three access manholes spaced approximately 305 m (1,000 feet) apart along the alignment, a 2.13 m (84-inch) by 3.65 m (144-inch) transition structure, a 3.65 m (144-inch) by 3.04 m (120-inch) transition structure, and the connection of three existing sanitary sewer lines to the interceptor.

The development of a sampling instrument for the assessment of an underground coal miner’s exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust on a continuous and real-time basis has been long identified as essential for timely initiation of control actions. A respirable dust dosimeter (RDD) which operates on the principle of increasing pressure across a filter media with increasing dust mass on the filter has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Comparisons of the performance of the RDD with an U.S. approved gravimetric respirable dust sampler (GRD) have shown that the RDD may meet the requirements for measuring miners’ exposures on a cumulative, near real-time basis such as mid-shift and end of shift exposures. Recently, the performances of the RDD and GRD were compared by conducting side-by-side area sampling experiments in a controlled experimental environment in the laboratory and in underground coal mines under normal operating conditions. In this paper, the results from the in-mine study are presented and discussed. The experimental design for the in-mine study included two mines in different coal seams in different geographic coal regions. To ensure a wide range of concentrations, the experiments were conducted in a continuous miner section in Mine 1, and a longwall face in Mine 2. Airborne dust sampling was conducted for four different shifts at each mine. In each shift, two samples of different exposure durations were collected from two different locations. Each sample consisted of the readings of three dosimeters and the exposed filters from the three paired GRD samplers. As a result, a total of 96 comparative samples were obtained, 48 for each mine. The data were analyzed for the precision of the RDD and GRD measurements and for the relationships between the differential pressure of the RDD and the mass of dust on the paired GRD filter. The analyses indicate that, on the average, the RDD and the GRD track the airborne respirable dust concentrations well, exhibiting both a high correlation between the two measurements and a reliable predictive relationship of one from the other. Details of the experimental design, data analyses procedures, results, conclusions and recommendations of the underground experiments are presented in this paper.

"PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

The first steps for in situ resource utilisation (ISRU) on target bodies such as the Moon, Mars and near-Earth asteroids (NEA), and even comets, involve the same sequence of steps as in the terrestrial mining of resources. First exploration including prospecting must occur, and then the resource must be acquired through excavation methods if it is of value. Subsequently a load-haul-dump sequence of events occurs, followed by processing of the resource in an ISRU plant, to produce useful commodities.While these technologies and related supporting operations are mature in terrestrial applications, they will be different in space since the environment and indigenous materials are different than on Earth. In addition, the equipment must be highly automated, since for the majority of the production cycle time, there will be no humans present to assist or intervene. This space mining equipment must withstand a harsh environment which includes vacuum, radical temperature swing cycles, highly abrasive lofted dust, electrostatic effects, van der Waals forces effects, galactic cosmic radiation, solar particle events, high thermal gradients when spanning sunlight terminators, steep slopes into craters / lava tubes and cryogenic temperatures as low as 40 K in permanently shadowed regions. In addition the equipment must be tele-operated from Earth or a local base where the crew is sheltered. If the tele-operation occurs from Earth then significant communications latency effects mandate the use of autonomous control systems in the mining equipment. While this is an extremely challenging engineering design scenario, it is also an opportunity, since the technologies developed in this endeavour could be used in the next generations of terrestrial mining equipment, in order to mine deeper, safer, more economical and with a higher degree of flexibility. New space technologies could precipitate new mining solutions here on Earth.The NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Swamp Works is an innovation environment and methodology, with associated laboratories that use lean development methods and creativity-enhancing processes to invent and develop new solutions for space exploration. This paper will discuss the Swamp Works approach to developing space mining and resource extraction systems and the vision of space development it serves. The ultimate goal of the Swamp Works is to expand human civilisation into the solar system via the use of local resources utilisation. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

Innovations in communications and real-time information systems are providing industry opportunities to improve profitability. Real-time operating data is collected from equipment across a site or even several sites into a central server for secure PC and PDA-based Internet access. This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

Potash is an important natural mineral used largely as a fertilizer in the production of food and fiber. About 93 percent of all potash consumed globally is used in agriculture as fertilizer. The balance is used to manufacture potassium chemicals. Most potash is extracted by conventional underground mining methods. Solution mining is used when underground deposits are irregular and very deep. The other main production method involves the evaporation of brines in shallow salt lakes, followed by the harvesting of potassium minerals.

In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

"Mineralogical characterization and metallurgical extraction of silver is challenging due to its complex mineralogy and chemistry. Over 200 Ag-bearing minerals have been identified and a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals. Silver can occur not only as discrete microscopic (visible) silver minerals but also as submicroscopic (invisible) silver in other minerals. During processing, silver may form passivation compounds such as silver hydroxide, silver sulphide, jarosite-like silver sulphate, silver halide or silver cyanide precipitate, all of which may negatively impact on silver extraction. Knowing the deportment of silver in the ore and its metallurgical products is important in flowsheet design and plant optimization. This paper begins with the classification of silver ores and minerals and a review of processing techniques, and focuses on the major mineralogical factors to explain why and how these factors affect silver extraction. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the application of silver process mineralogy in flowsheet design and plant optimization.INTRODUCTIONSilver was known to and utilized by mankind since ancient time. Actually, it was one of the earliest metals discovered and utilized by mankind after gold and copper.Silver is the whitest metallic element. It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, moldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag, from the Latin argentum, which means white and shining. Although silver does not react with many chemicals, it does react with sulfur, which is always present in air at trace amounts. The reaction causes silver to tarnish, and consequently it must be polished periodically to retain its luster.Silver possesses many special physical characteristics and qualities that make it useful to a variety of industries. The photography industry is the biggest user of silver compounds. Silver forms the most light-sensitive halide salts, which are essential to developing highquality photographic prints. Silver also has the highest electrical conductivity per unit volume of any metal, including copper, so it is used extensively in electronics."

The extraction of lignite in open-cast mines has a severe impact on the landscape. Proper landscaping after the shut-down of the mines has always been the statutory responsibility of the mine operator. The large area of the land used for open-cast lignite mining requires special regional planning procedures well in advance of the permitting procedure stipulated in the mining law. The lignite plan determines, among other things, the objectives of land reclamation. These objectives will then be outlined in more detail in the mine operation plans and implemented accordingly. Apart from the actual mining laws and regulations, a large number of environmental laws also determine the process of land reclamation. The success achieved in the field of land reclamation in all mining regions during the recent decades has shown that the lignite mining industry creates new landscapes that do not leave any scars in the countryside and merge very well with it.
