There are huge benefits for mining operations that have a well-defined maintenance program that is understood and followed across the total operation. But for operations lacking a quality maintenance program, there is equal assurance that nearly every major maintenance problem can be traced to this omission. Few problems will be permanently corrected until such a program is implemented. Definition The maintenance program re-quires the interaction of all mine departments. Initially, the production department will request work and the maintenance department will identify work, principally through preventive maintenance inspection and testing efforts. Maintenance will then classify the new work to determine the best way to respond. Maintenance will plan selected major jobs to enable its crews to carry them out more effectively. Maintenance will schedule the planned work with operations. Supervisors will assign all types of work to their crews then, control the work through effective supervision. As work is completed, maintenance will measure the work using an accurate information system. Next, it will assess overall accomplishments against goals such as performance standards or budgets. In addition, the pro-gram would prescribe a means to evaluate every aspect of the operation as it affects maintenance so that necessary improvements or changes can be identified, prioritized and acted on. Such evaluations should be part of a mine-wide continuous improvement effort. A well-defined maintenance program is one of the best investments a mining operation can make to assure its profitability. Educating the total operation on the pro-gram assures long-term dividends from the investment.

Subsurface imaging technologies are part of the electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods. EM technologies such as radio imaging method (RIM), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and drill string radar (DSR) have great application potentials in the mining industry. However, the success for applying the EM methods to subsurface observations is largely dependant on the correct evaluation of the electrical properties (i.e., resistivity and dielectric constant) of the rocks in the domain of interest. The depth of penetration of the EM signal in coal, as well as the electrical contrast between coal and subsurface boundary rocks or anomalies, are critical parameters for any successful radar system. Based on the measured electrical properties of the coal seam, the proper operating frequency of the radar system must be chosen in order to successfully detect features such as the coal-roof rock boundary, dykes, and voids ahead of mining. The electrical properties of the rocks in a coal seam are frequency dependent. Even though there has been a great advancement in the hardware and data processing software in the past twenty years, there have not been many examinations of the high-frequency properties of coal measure rocks. In this paper, the laboratory setups, the testing procedure, and case studies will be presented for a wide spectrum of frequencies for coal measure rock samples collected from various US coal fields. Tests have been conducted to study the different conditions, including moisture content, that affect the EM properties.

The extent of this interest has been evidenced to the Bureau of Mines by numerous requests for information as to the factors that must be considered if Diesel engines are to be used safely underground.

The optimization of the explosive performance is of great importance since blasting is extensively used in civil projects and mining industry. An improved understanding of how the energy from the detonation of an explosive is transmitted to the surrounding rock mass is critical information for the proper selection of an explosive. Therefore, an extensive study was done on the influence of the blasthole diameter on the Velocity of Detonation (VoD) and the detonation front curvature. In this study, pure emulsion was tested in confined conditions to better simulate the behavior of the detonation of the explosive in rock mass conditions. A methodology is proposed for carrying out the evaluation of the explosive performance. The blasthole diameter of the samples varied from Ø 25 mm (0.98 in) up to Ø 65 mm (2.55 in). The confiner was a magnetic mortar cylindrical sample with mechanical properties similar to a rock mass. A streak camera and VoD probes were used to measure detonation front curvature and VoD. The data was analyzed and correlated with the physical parameters of the explosive. Additional to this, the data was further used to calibrate numerical models in LS-Dyna.

"Canada became the world's largest uranium producer in 1984. That leadership position is likely to be maintained for many years into the future because of a firm production base, many undeveloped known deposits with commercial promise, and a large geologicalpotential for new discoveries.There are some uncertainties on the horizon, principally because of restrictive actions in process within the U.S.A., which are aimed at preserving a deteriorating domestic uranium industry. Should such actions result in import restrictions, for example, there would be a negative effect on foreign producers at least in the short term. Canada may avoid such difficulties under a tentative U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement where restrictions on the import of Canadian uranium into the United States would be eliminated. Over the longer term, demand for Canada's uranium resources will grow because of the foreseen growth in the world's installed nuclear power capacity. IntroductionSince the phenomenon of nuclear fission was discovered in 1938, the utilization of uranium has grown substantially. Initially, the principal use for uranium was in the production of nuclear weapons. However, once civilian nuclear power reactors began to be built in the 1950s, an increasing fraction of uranium output was directed to the production of fuel elements for use in electricity generating stations.The cumulative uranium production by those countries in the World Outside Centrally-Planned-Economies Areas, WOCA, during the period 1938 to 1985 exceeded 800 000 tonnes of uranium. Some 60% of that was mined in the United States and Canada, as indicated in Figure 1. In 1986, nearly 80% of WOCA output came from five countries, Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and Namibia, as indicated in Table 1 and illustrated in Figure 2.During the past decade the world annual consumption of nuclear energy has more than tripled (Fig. 3). As of December 31, 1986, the world total of nuclear power reactors had reached 394 with a total net capacity of 270 GWe. The thermal output from nuclear power plants in 1985 exceeded 60% of the energy contained in all of the oil produced that year in the Middle East. Thus, nuclear power has already become an important component in the world energy supply picture."

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. The FactSage® package consists of a series of information, database and calculation modules that enable one to access pure substances and solution databases and perform thermochemical equilibrium calculations. FactSage was originally founded by process pyrometallurgists and has since expanded its applications to include hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, corrosion, glass technology, combustion, ceramics, geology, environmental studies, etc. With the various modules one can perform a wide variety of thermochemical calculations and generate tables and graphs of complex chemical equilibria and phase diagrams for multicomponent systems. This paper presents examples of recent and current developments in FactSage in areas of particular interest to Dr. David Robertson. These include both ferrous and non-ferrous processing, as well as solidification and refining simulation. The paper also includes reference to the Internet Fact-Web education package.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognised within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralisation is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralisation yield a wide range of homogenisation temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250 - 300¦C and 350 - 400¦C respectively. d30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralisation range from -0.1 to -0.4ë. The mineralisation at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

A constitutional diagram for the Ta-W-Re alloy system is presented. Rhenium dissolves in the complete range of solid solutions between tungsten and tantalum up to 48 wt pct in tantalum 'to about 30 wt pct in tungsten. Intermediate x and u phases only are found. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence, metallography and melting-point measurements were employed. THE constitution diagram of ternary alloys of tungsten, tantalum, and rhenium for temperatures above 1000°C is reported in this paper. Alloys in this system rich in tantalum and tungsten are of interest for high-temperature applications, and those rich in rhenium for electronic applications. No ternary phase diagram appears to be available in the literature. The three-component binary diagrams have been previously established1-3 and the present ternary data are consistent with these. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Commercially pure tantalum (99.7 pct), rhenium (99.99 pet), and tungsten (99.9 or 99.95 pct) powders were purchased from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., Chase Brass and Copper Co., and Fansteel or Westinghouse Electric Corp., respectively. These powders were pressed without binder and arc-melted under helium. The preparatory and analytical techniques employed were identical to those used for the Ta-Re system investigation carried out in this laboratory.324 These included X-ray diffraction and metallographic phase identification, X-ray fluorescent and wet chemical analyses, solidus determinations and heat treatments in a resistance-heated tantalum-filament vacuum furnace. For microstructural examinations standard mechanical polishing techniques were used through diamond laps. Polished speciments of all compositions were etched by swabbing with 4 parts HI?, 4 parts HNO3, and 1 part H20. Since the microstruc-tures of alloys containing one or two phases closely resembled their counterparts in the respective binary systems, typical examples are omitted in this presentation. In all the alloys examined, it was possible to observe the number of phases present. Particularly when there were small amounts of one phase involved, it was possible to identify it only by a combined conclusion based on X-ray diffraction, position of an alloy in a composition series, and the phase rule. A total of 100 different alloy compositions was arc-melted and studied in the as-cast condition metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. Specimens of each of these compositions were heat-treated at 2680, 2530, and 2020°C for 1, 2, and 4 hr, respectively. Those which were treated at 2020 were given a preliminary homogenization treatment at 2500°C for 1 hr. Specimens of 25 alloys were heat-treated at 1200o C for 168 hr. Solidus temperature measurements were made by the detection of incipient melting in eighteen alloy compositions. The metallographic and X-ray diffraction results are summarized in Table I. Graphically, this information appears in the isothermal plots of Figs. 2 and 3. Within the accuracy of the experimental methods, two such plots are sufficient to locate these data, since the results for 1200°C were similar to 2020 and those at 2530 resembled 2680

Lime production is the largest single chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term “lime” in this review refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review is restricted to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry. Production and consumption In 2004, according to preliminary data, U.S. lime production was about 20.1 Mt (22.1 million st), an increase of 900 kt (990,000 st) compared with 2003. Production in2004 was valued at about $1.4 billion. Commercial sales of lime totaled 18.6 Mt (20.5 million st) and captive production was 1.5 Mt (1.65 million st). Total U.S. consumption was about 20.2 Mt (22.2 million st). The majority of U.S. lime trade was with Canada.

This paper reports on an innovative professional development program for school science teachers run collaboratively between the Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing and Murdoch University. Ultimately the initiative aims at increasing the pool of school students with strong science and mathematics backgrounds while highlighting the challenging careers available in the mineral resource sector including the gold industry. The program is unique in that it seeks to develop a network of science teachers who may participate in a series of workshops, short courses and tours over several years. The objective is to raise secondary school studentsÆ awareness of potential careers within the minerals sector by exposing teachers to a real life, hands-on look into the mining and minerals resource industry. Though the program includes the breadth of the resource processing sector, the potential value to gold processing is in developing a greater pool of potential employees. The initiative allows teachers to develop a better insight into the practical applications of the theoretical sciences they are required to teach. The evolution of the program from the first trials with Western Australian teachers to the introduction of the initiative to Queensland teachers are reported on. Additionally, the results of a pilot study involving 40 participating teachers are described. This study used a questionnaire and follow-up interviews to gain quantitative and qualitative feedback from teachers. There is evidence that the professional development program has resulted in teachers acquiring a new found appreciation for the application of the fundamental chemistry and physics they teach within the school curriculum. Also reported are associations between teacher participation in this professional development program and changing attitudes towards the industry in a positive way. Finally, there is some indication that these positive teacher attitudes may result in their students developing a better understanding of the diversity and availability of career paths within this industry.

Operations and Maintenance departments have long had an adversarial relationship. The widespread evolution and adoption of modern management techniques such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Lean Production however has driven interest in working co-operatively to optimize overall plant performance. Mining and minerals operations have long adopted RCM in maintenance, and are now adopting Lean throughout the organization. Modern management initiatives like these explicitly call for co-operation between the two disciplines of maintenance and production and many advances have been made in the realms of people and methodology. One area that has lagged behind in supporting these developments however is information systems. Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems in maintenance and newer Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) in operations have not been truly integrated in the way needed. Complicated plants, different software architectures, continually changing conditions and many variables have lead to systems problems which have contributed to the maintenance/operations divide. Master data synchronization (the ?plant tree?) and integrated reporting of real-time data with transactional data are just two of the issues that are being solved by new approaches in information technology including web services and service orientated architectures. New technologies are coming on-stream to enable the final ?bridging of the gap?.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

This report discusses the development of a mathematical model that describes the flow of methane only and methane and water in a coal bed during mining operations. Because of the complex geometry, boundary conditions and fluid properties, the model is based on a numerical solution to the equations describing flow. The goals for the development of this model and requirements to which it complies are for the most part expressly stated in Request for Proposal No. 50110752. In addition to the capabilities specified under the scope of work the model can handle an anisotropic porous medium and a source term has been added which will simulate, somewhat, the effects of desorption. This term will be pressure dependent. The effect of time on such a term is only taken care of in the change of pressure with time. This source term will have the dimensions of Mcf/day/Mcf pore volume. It will be a part of the input data to be supplied by the user and will be entered as a table of rates versus pressure. These models consider the fracture system as the main porosity. All computed results pertain to the fractures. The source term mentioned above represents the flow from the matrix porosity into the fracture. Such flow should be small compared with the flow between fractures since these models handle only one porosity structure system.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. MAGNESIUM metal, with a specific gravity of 1.73, is two-thirds the weight of aluminium and one-quarter that of steel. It is the lightest metal which is stable in the atmosphere. Before the war it had begun, though somewhat slowly, to take a place among the established metals. In 1939, magnesium production on this continent amounted to some 3,000 tons per annum and was confined to one company. At that time, Germany produced perhaps 20,000 tons. The advent of war, however, increased the demand to fantastic heights and introduced production problems of unprecedented magnitude. By the end of 1943, North American production is expected to reach 300,000 tons per annum (1), an increase of one hundredfold. Such a rate of expansion has not been witnessed previously in the history of metallurgy. It has given the metallurgist an opportunity to try new production methods and to learn in a short time what might otherwise have taken many years. The metallurgy of magnesium is still in its formative years and at this time widely different production methods are in operation side by side. This paper will discuss these methods in so far as information is available for publication at this time. A general description of the new Canadian industry will be included.
