Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. PGE-bearing sulphide mineralisation is contained in the lower 600 m of the Upper Central Layered Zone of the intrusion. There are four regimes with distinctive crystallisation characteristics. PGE content is low, both in bulk rock and in terms of metal in 100% sulphides, in the sulphide-rich cumulates but increases sharply in the sulphide-poor cumulates at the base of regime 1. Increases in regime 2 have no such clear relationship with incoming cumulus sulphides. PGE contents are low throughout regime 3, but regime 4 has sulphides with high PGE content, decreasing rapidly upwards, at the base of many of its cyclic units. The observations are interpreted as indicating that sulphide saturation occurred in the middle of a cyclic unit in regime 1, after which fractional segregation of sulphide caused a systematic decrease in PGE content. The resulting contrast between 40 000 ppb PGE in sulphides below the mineralised zone and less than 1 000 ppb above is of practical importance in exploration for such zones. In regime 2 the magma chamber was open to fresh influxes and PGE content was not so sensitive to sulphide saturation. In many regime 4 units influxes of new magma caused immediate sulphide saturation and PGE depletion, so that PGE-rich cumulates do not underlie PGE-bearing sulphide zones. Theoretical analysis indicates that regime 1-type behaviour is likely to characterise intrusions below the level at which plagioclase has entered as a cumulus phase and regime 4-type behaviour above

This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners' welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.

Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

There are many large rhodonite-bearing veins containing manganese in the Eureka-Animas Forks area of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Sunnyside vein is the largest known vein in the area. As observed on the surface, the vein is mineralized over 8,000 feet and attains a maximum width of 200 feet. The average width of the vein and its branches and ramifications is 58 feet in the area that was mapped in detail. The weighted-average analysis of surface and underground samples from the northeastern extension of the Sunnyside vein is 8 percent manganese. Most other known veins in the area have a similar manganese content. The Hidden Treasure vein lies southeast of the Sunnyside-No Name-Mastadon vein. The weighted average of the analyses of surface and underground samples from this vein is 13 percent manganese. Exposures of the Scotia-Silver Chord vein are visible over a strike length of 4,000 feet on Treasure Mountain. Diamond-drill holes show that the vein contains 10 percent or more manganese to a depth of 400 feet. The vein has an average width of 28 feet. The Independence vein is exposed on the surface for a distance of 600 feet and has an average width of 6 feet. Three cut samples taken across the vein had an average content of 20.7 percent manganese. Sampling of the outcrops of eight veins in the Placer Gulch area also indicates manganese. Numerous other veins cropping out in the surrounding area are similar to the outcrop of the Sunnyside vein system mineralogically and are worth investigating.

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH). This year the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers has chosen to give me its Robert H. Richards Award, a distinction which is widely regarded as the highest honor in the field of mineral engineering. I am deeply moved by this tribute, which suggests not only regard for my service to the profession but also the affectionate esteem of my fellow mineral engineers. You have made me happy at the prospect of the permanent association of my name with that of Robert Hallowell Richards and of the distinguished recipients of the award, Arthur Fay Taggart, Frank R. Milliken, John F. Myers, Edward William Englemann, C. Harry Benedict, Edward W. Davis and Arthur W. Fahrenwald. I wish to thank you all for an honor so generously bestowed. Professor Richards is known to us all as a legendary figure, and we can read about him in the Richards Memorial Volume of our Transactions. Some of us have even had the good fortune of knowing him. I count myself among those lucky few. In its intangible attributes the Award recalls those things for which Professor Richards stood: for Science in Art, for thoroughness, for meticulous accuracy, for bold imaginativeness, most of all for professional integrity. Now, as in his day, these attributes are central to an engineer's creed. They are appropriately needed in a formulation of a definition of the mineral engineering profession.

Since the U. S. Metals Refining Co. works was established, around the turn of the century, near the town which is now called Carteret, N. J., it has grown to be a major producer of refined copper and the main source of that special brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper." Owing to the complex metallurgical problems arising from handling a variety of raw materials such as copper concentrate from Matahambre, Cuba, copper and brass scrap from the New York area, and domestic blister copper, the organization is geared from top management down through its 2000 employes to maintain a high degree of flexibility in plant operation. The Company is a subsidiary of The American Metal Co. Charges for the smelter furnaces, one reverberatory furnace and one blast furnace, are made up in. bedding bins so that they may be tailored to the production of a constant grade of blister copper. The reverberatory furnace smelts the .sulphide charge, which may be a blend of ten different materials but principally the Cuban concentrate, and the matte from the process is poured into a converter. This reverberatory is 80 by 20 ft, silica lined with a slag bottom, fired by pulverized coal, and continuously side-charged from the top by bottom-dump cars which keep the side walls covered. It produces a 40 to 50 per cent copper matte. The fuel-charge ratio is 4.35 tons of solid charge per ton of coal. The furnace has a capacity of 10,000 tons of charge per month and produces from 5000 to 6000 tons of slag per month which must be disposed of. About 5000 tons of converter slag is produced monthly and returned molten to the reverberatory furnace. Coal preparation plants play an important role in modern society by providing high quality feeds for coal-fired utilities, industrial boilers and metallurgical coke facilities. Unfortunately, field data indicate that preparation plants are often not operated under optimum conditions, resulting in lower productivity and lost profits. In many cases, this shortcoming can be attributed to a failure by plant operators (i) to recognize the importance of correctly adjusting plant operating conditions to accommodate requirements dictated by coal sales agreements within different coal markets and (ii) to properly account for variations in product moisture with particle size across different plant circuits. This paper discusses the important influence of moisture constraints on preparation plant optimization and provides a case study to illustrate the potential gains that can be realized via proper understanding of plant moisture control.

The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the research efforts by the U.S. government to improve the health and safety of miners working in the United States. This research began in 1910 with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (the Bureau) and it has continued during the past 10 decades, even after the closure of the Bureau in 1996. The research on safer mining technology, formerly done by the Bureau, has now been combined with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies of miners? health to form a unified federal research program to improve the health and safety of miners. This article describes this research and places some of the accomplishments into perspective with other activities in the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Time Line (insert).

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. The CTC (Certified Trading Chains) mineral certification system has been piloted in Rwanda since late 2008. CTC project implementation is jointly driven by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Rwanda Geology and Mines Authority (OGMR), in cooperation with other national stakeholders. Five Rwandan mineral producers participate in the CTC project with their flagship mining concessions. Based on independent third-party audits, CTC certifies supply chain due diligence measures of these companies engaged in the artisanal mining sector through on-the-ground assessments of mining conditions, transparency, as well as mineral origin and traceability. The CTC system thus allows responsible mineral producers and their clients to verifiably demonstrate supply chain due diligence and good governance in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

In the largely preserved laterite profiles at Syama mine, in the savanna region of southern Mali, element geochemistry in the mottled-clay horizon and below can be related directly back to the protolith, but above this, in the ferricrete and cuirasse horizons, the hypogene signature is much modified by pedogenic processes. In tropical rainforest terrains extensive remobilisation can result in wide but weak geochemical targets for gold and pathfinder elements. At the Hire concession in central Ivory Coast, intense recent alteration of the largely intact laterite sequences has modified soil-geochemical dispersion patterns extensively, producing Fe-rich nodular stone lines and obliterating previous patterns and features. Where the upper horizons of the laterite profile have been removed or reworked, as at the Senoufo concession in northern Ivory Coast (savanna) or the Kubi prospect in Ghana (rainforest), all soil horizons can be related directly to hypogene geochemistry. In these truncated profiles, gold and base metal anomalies are essentially those of the lower weathering profile and form narrow but strong dispersion haloes. A good understanding of the geochemical processes active in deeply weathered profiles is required if targets are to be recognised effectively

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

The rate of hydration influences many important physical properties of gypsum. Previous research examined the rate of gypsum hydration and related this to compressive strength and microstructure development using BET specific surface area analysis. The analysis of gypsum porosity in combination with BET surface area and rate of hydration remains to be done. In the present study, mesoporosity is analyzed using the numerical method of Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) to gain a greater understanding of gypsum hydration and microstructure development. The rate of hydration has a significant effect on mesoporosity of the gypsum matrix. The results reveal the effect of mesoporosity and hydration rate on some macro physical properties of gypsum.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the complete ternary system K2 HfF6¬K2ZrF6-l.25 weight-percent HF at 40° C. In addition, solubility curves have been established at 25°, 30°, 500, 60°, and 70° C. These solubility data implemented a study of hafnium enrichment in feed solutions for liquid-liquid extraction processes.. Selected K2HfF6-K2 ZrF6-1.25 weight-percent HF mixtures were equilibrated in a constant temperature bath. Compositions of the equilibrated solutions and wet residues were established from combined hafnium and zirconium oxide and total fluorine analyses. All solubility curves were essentially parallel on triangular coordinates. At 40° C, the solid phase of the K2HfF6-K2ZrF6-1.25 percent HF system is a series of solid solution hydrates with K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H2O segments existing at the respective extremes. Since this system contains K2HfF6-H20 and K2ZrF6.3H20 segments, it is not ideal for simple separation of high-purity K2HfF6 from K2HfF6-K2ZrF6 mixtures by recrystallization. However, it would be useful for producing hafnium-enriched feed solutions from zircon concentrates for liquid-liquid extraction of hafnium from zirconium.

A practical simple method is proposed to estimate the tensile strength (st) of strong brittle rocks from the strength ratio of R= sc/st = 8 sc/sci, where sc is the uniaxial compressive strength and sci is the crack initiation stress in an uniaxial compression test. 8 is the Griffith strength ratio and the term sc/sci accounts for the difference of crack growth or propagation in tension and compression in uniaxial compression tests. sci can be reliably obtained from volumetric strain measurement or acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. With the strength ratio R determined, the tensile strength can be indirectly obtained from the result of uniaxial compression tests. In addition, a practical estimate of the Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi is presented and it is suggested that mi = 12 sc/sci can be applied to strong, brittle rocks in high confinement zone and mi = 8 sc/sci can be applied to low confinement to tension zones. It is found that the predicted tensile strengths and Hoek-Brown strength parameter mi using this method are in good agreement with test data. The rock strength parameters like st and mi, which require specialty tests such as direct tensile (or Brazilian) and triaxial compression tests for their determination, can be reasonably estimated from uniaxial compression tests.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. [ ] AMSS Software Package NIOSH has developed a simple, user-friendly computer program called Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS). AMSS can help mine planners to evaluate each potential multiple-seam interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS begins by evaluating the pillar design. Mining and metallurgical industries need to minimize their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Hatch specializes in conducting mining and metallurgical energy management assessments and optimizing productivity. Projects executed have demonstrated that there is a wealth of energy management, waste reduction, and process efficiency improvements that require no or low capital investment. Typical energy cost savings are on the order of 5% to 12%, with similar reductions in GHG emissions. Hatch generates Marginal Abatement Cost Curves to optimize the implementation pathway, maximizing carbon abatement and minimizing cost. The findings of a practical case study from Cameco are presented.
