INTRODUCTION A program to insure adequate talent for development and management of our mineral resources entails two equally important and interrelated aspects: 1) attracting and retaining promising student talent, and 2) providing a first-rate education for those entering careers in mineral science and engineering. Manpower shortages have eased in many areas of engineering, particularly in those areas dependent directly or indirectly upon government contracts in space and war programs. However, in the minerals industry the needs still remain critical. As increasing concern over preservation of the environment has developed, the political and social reaction was to seek out major offenders, to look for "whipping boys" -- and the mineral industry was, and had been, an offender. It was there for everyone to take pictures, it couldn't be covered up, and the Department of the Interior lashed away in the beautiful and popular brochures: Quest for Quality, The Third Wave, The Population Challenge, and Surface Mining and Our Environment (Ravaged Land). The Sierra Club, the Field and Stream magazine, TV, and daily news media added their lashes. In the minds of our social-conscious youth the mineral industry took on the image of "exploiters" of natural resources; "polluters" of streams, lakes, and the atmosphere; "despoilers" of wilderness areas and scenic beauty -- a plague to combat, rather than an exciting challenge that entailed exploration of the remote, conquering of the primitive, and developing of the undeveloped. Enrollments declined and many traditional mineral engineering curricula were abolished or Integrated into other stronger engineering departments to meet student-faculty ratio requirements.

"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The module is based on Level 5 ObjectTM software. It is graphics oriented and user-friendly. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

Southeastern reserves of titanium ores are large, widespread, and ample for anticipated demand. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

Reconnaissance studies of beach sands along the eastern part of the Gulf of Alaska were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine if any of these coastal areas warranted investigations as possible sources of valuable minerals. Because of difficult access and limited transportation facilities only a minimum of sampling, surveying, and camping equipment is utilized to obtain spot samples from key areas as well as information indicating the location, size, and character of the deposits. Such data were obtained from beaches located along approximately 247 miles of the Gulf of Alaska coastline during parts of the 1957 and 1958 field seasons. A total of 201 3-inch-diameter auger holes, spaced roughly at 1 mile intervals, were bored by hand methods to depths ranging from 3 feet to 27 feet; also 33 shovel samples were collected from selected localities. Samples were reduced to a rough concentrate in the field by panning; the rough concentrates were shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau for further concentration and for petrographic and chemical analyses. Particular attention was given to the heavy-mineral content of the concentrates, although the types and relative amounts of rock-forming minerals were also determined. The reconnaissance indicated that, generally, the valuable mineral content of the beach deposits was too low to be of further interest except in the vicinity of Yakutat and Lituya Bays where erratic but possibly significant concentrations of magnetite and/or ilmenite were found. At Yakutat, about 20 miles of beachline extending southeasterly from Ocean Cape, yielded samplas containing from 1 pound to over 300 pounds of iron and from a trace to over 100 pounds of titanium dioxide (TiO2) per cubic yard of beach material. However, the higher grade samples represented local concentrations of minor importance. The general tenor of the Yakutat beach, as indicated by the airthmetical average of 27 auger-hole samples, is about 35 pounds of iron and 20.5 pounds of titanium dioxide per cubic yard of beach material. The primary recrystallization textures of 11 single crystals cold rolled 70 pct were determined. The effect of crystal orientation on recrystallization behavior was investigated also and found to be large. An exception was found to the relationship that strong components of the recrystolliza-tion texture are rotated from the cold rolled texture by 30° about <110> axes, but generally this relationship was found to hold quite well. Evidence supporting oriented nucleotion was found and discussed in terms of probable active slip systems and <110> edge dislocations. THE present paper is one of a series&apos;.&apos; on recrys-tallization phenomena in cold rolled 31/4 Si-Fe single crystals and is mainly concerned with the textures produced on recrystallizing from stable end orientations. Data for the cold rolled textures of the crystals used have been reported by Koh and Dunn." Their results showed that the sharpness of the cold rolled textures varied throughout the range of stable end orientations and that the tendency to re-crystallize was related to the sharpness of the cold rolled texture, wherein the rate of recrystallization increased and the size of recrystallization grains decreased with decreasing sharpness of the cold rolled texture. In the project under consideration the cold rolled crystals involved a range of initial orientations that, together with those studied earlier,&apos; provide information on several points. The first point is whether the recrystallization texture from a (111) [112] cold rolled texture, a stable end orientation that can be approached from different directions, correlates in any way with the initial orientation before cold rolling, or whether the recrystallization texture is entirely determined by the observable features of the cold rolled texture. The second point involves a preliminary study to see if the main components of the recrystallization textures correlate with the most probable active slip systems. The third point is to determine what effect departure from slip on one slip system has on the tendency to recrystallize. Experimental Procedure Nine specimens from a previous investigation and two additional ones from thicker stock (lot D) but of similar composition to the others were used in the present work. The latter two crystals, like the nine, were cold rolled to a reduction in thickness of 70 pct and the amount of widening was determined. Depending on their primary recrystallization behavior, the cold rolled crystals were given short or long anneals at temperatures of 980°C or higher. Table I summarizes the data on initial orientations, the textures obtained by cold rolling, and the anneals given to provide samples for the present work. Fine grained specimens were thinned to 0.002 in. thickness and placed in an integrating specimen holder. Chart recordings using a transmission X-ray method and MoKa radiation were obtained for diffraction from (110) planes. This method,&apos;,3 which gives data for all of the pole figure except a central region of 30" radius, proved sufficient to give generally five, and sometimes six, of the six possible pole concentration areas of any one component of the texture. These data, therefore, were generally adequate for a positive identification of each component present. The first texture obtained for specimen B-2 was poorly defined because of too coarse a grain structure and therefore too few crystals in each component for satisfactory X-ray reflections. The same

Molybdenum alloys with good strength properties at elevated temperatures were produced by the powder metallurgical internal oxidation method previously applied to tungsten and known as oxyreaction strengthening. Commercial molybdenum powders were blended with 0 to 10 pet of a reactive powder, ZrMo2. The effects of composition, blending procedure, and sintering conditions on strength properties at elevated temperatures were studied. Strengthening was attributed to zirconium in solid solution with molybdenum and to the presence of submicrometer particles of Zr02. Several alloys had tensile strength and stress-rupture properties com-parable with those of the best commercial alloys. The maximum tensile strengths obtained were 92 kpsi at 1,200° C and 53 kpsi at 1,316° C. The maximum stress-rupture life at 30 kpsi and 1,200° C was 145 hours.

The composition of phosphate rocks, mainly used in manufacturing fertilizers, varies among deposits; therefore, phosphate rocks from different sources are expected to behave differently in acidulation processes. This paper examines the effect of preconcentration of phosphate ore from El-Sebaiya East, Egypt, using flotation on uranium leaching. A high-grade ore sample (27.3% P2O5, 168 mg/kg U) supplied by the Al-Nasr Mining Company, was subjected to reverse single-stage flotation to separate carbonate from the phosphate sample. Subsequently, P2O5 and U concentrations were 32.2% (92.1% recovery) and 225 mg/kg, respectively. After the leach process, the U concentration in the liquor was 319 mg/L.

The aim of this research was to study the absorption characteristics of thermally dried fine coal from South African collieries. After milling to ?150 µm and pressure filtration, the samples were subjected to either air drying or thermal drying at 150°C. The samples were then put into a climate box at 28°C and at three different relative humidity levels, namely 30, 60 and 94 per cent. It was found that the equilibrium moisture content of thermally dried coal at a specific relative humidity was lower than that of air dried coal. The relationship between the equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity is described by 1 ? RH = exp (-KTMen). There was no relationship between the volatile matter content and equilibrium moisture content, but there was an increase in the equilibrium moisture content of the coal with an increase in mineral content. The moisture uptake rate increased with an increase in temperature and a decrease in particle size. A model is discussed that fitted the experimental data and gave a good prediction for changes in the conditions. There was no evidence of greater moisture absorption by thermally dried coal. The Bureau of Mines conducted surface joint and stress measurements, airborne remote sensing imagery studies, compass-oriented borehole televiewer surveys, numerical simulation of fractured wells, and well productivity studies in a four-quadrangle study area of Ohio, to determine the effects of earth fracture systems on the deliverability of gas storage fields. The results of these studies indicate that much useful information about a gas storage reservoir can be obtained and put to practical use by studying--(1) oriented cores for fractures and directional permeability, (2) orientation of induced hydraulic fractures for alignment of well patterns, and (3) aerial photos and multispectral scanner imagery for general surface geology comparison and to determine if some, development patterns can be generated by such results. The absence of known tectonic elements associated with flat-lying sediments, such as faults or fracture zones that can be seen on the surface, indicates that the use of remote sensors such as radar or aerial photography is not likely to be useful in picking well locations for drilling. Studies similar to those discussed here should be conducted in gently folded and strongly folded sedimentary formation areas to determine if the increased knowledge of earth fracture systems under these conditions might be beneficial in gasfield and gas storage reservoir development.

Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. Discussion is presented by Prof. King and Dr. Schneider of the paper by Lin, Gomez and Finch published in Trans.IMM C, vol.104, 1995, p.C155-C161. They conclude that the correction procedures used for simulated observations of simulated capped spheres are not reliable when applied to mineralogical data and that their relative ranking should not be extrapolated to other situations. Properly regularised solutions obtained with the use of appropriate kernels can be safely used for routine mineral liberation work and can be calibrated accurately against real mineralogical samples in the laboratory

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces of up to 12.2 m in length. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain setback distance, operator positioning, and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3 were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

"Best practice in the economic evaluation of mining projects and operations is based on the integration of geological, mining, metallurgical, environmental, marketing, economic and corporate information and strategies. Fundamentally, the economic evaluation takes into account mining, blending, stockpiling, processing, smelting, refining and marketing ore resources with grades estimated by geostatistical methodologies.Nevertheless, a realistic economic evaluation consists of a concurrent and integrated optimization process that maximizes the concentrates or products of liberated and selected ore minerals from mineral deposits. The optimum solution is obtained through a trade-off among mining, blending, stockpiling and processing ore reserves with distinct mineralogy and texture characteristics. The concurrent optimization determines both the practical mining sequence of ore reserves and the dynamic and robust mineral processing flowsheet design over the expected life of mining projects and operations.A combined risk-adverse and concurrent optimization process takes into account the spatial uncertainty of the mineralogy and texture characteristics of ore reserves. Additionally, a variety of mineral processing linear, non-linear, additive and non-additive parameters modeled spatially. The spatial uncertainty of these ore reserves characteristics and parameters has a direct impact in the expected mining sequence, mineral processing flowsheet design, concentrates or products quantity and quality, and economic value of mining projects and operations.Geometallurgical domain constrained stochastic geostatistical methodologies and multivariate mathematical models are applied for spatial uncertainty modeling of ore reserves characteristics and parameters. These mathematical models correlate the mineral processing liberation and selectivity responses of the mineralogy and textures within each geometallurgical domain. These models, in turn, are defined based on results of mineral processing and environmental testwork of unbiased and representative samples chosen for their variability. These samples are selected within mutually exclusive spatial geometallurgical uncertainty domains with similar mineralogical and textural characteristics in mineral deposits.Geometallurgical domains are defined by applying and combining multivariate statistical analysis and implicit modeling methodologies. These involve determining and constraining mineral processing liberation and selectivity properties explicitly contained in the extensive and integrated exploration drillhole database."

There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

Microorganisms are finding more use in the mineral industry, with extensive research efforts being reported in 1991. Most of these research efforts were presented in two major meetings, the SME Annual Meeting in Denver (February, 1991) and the Engineering Foundation Conference about Mineral Bioprocessing in Santa Barbara (June 1991). In addition, several articles were published in the IMM Transactions, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing and Water, Air. and Solid Pollution Journal. The literature can be categorized as: • Review articles presenting an overview of the activities in the use of biotechnology in mineral processing. • Research efforts into genetic manipulation of microorganisms to perform a specified job. • Studies in bioleaching of metals from different types of ores. • Biotreatment of wastes from the mineral industry including acidic mine waters, uranium tailings, cyanide destruction, etc. • Investigations into the role of microorganisms in the energy materials, such as oil, coal, tar sands, oil shales, etc. Smith (Mineral Bioprocessing Conference) presented a review of research efforts as well as practical applications of biotechnology in the mineral industry. In another article, Smith et al. (Minerals Engineering) emphasized that extensive fundamentals and applied research work should be pursued to explore the fundamentals, potential and practicality of the various possible uses of microorganisms in mineral engineering.

As a preventive action, the geotechnical department at the mine analyzed the original topography overlying a conveyor tunnel at the mine. Several dewatering drains were installed to intercept water collecting from an old lakebed. Subsequently, 20 steel arches were installed to provide additional support in an area of tunnel where original geological mapping indicated Type IV rock. This project was completed ontime with no loss to production. Construction schedules had to be developed to half hour precision, to accommodate the installation.
