Mining operations have made tremendous strides in improving the safety of blasting as shown by the significant and continual decrease in fatalities and serious injuries. Advances in blasting technology and blasting practices have played a significant role in reducing fatalities and injuries. However, even with the decline of fatalities and injuries blast area security continues to be by far the leading factor in blasting accidents. Even though there continues to be an increase in the use of industrial explosives and blasting agents in the U.S.A., the decline in fatalities and injuries from blasting accidents has persisted.

"Commercial development of the United States Oil Shale reserve will require substantial amounts of mining. In fact, even a modest 500,000 barrels per day industry requires a mining effort equivalent to nearly half of the current U.S. coal mining industry. Obviously, mining efforts on this scale will benefit from technological advances. There are a number of areas where advanced technology could impact mining. These include continuous miners, shale transport systems, and blasting. This paperexamines recent developments in computer modeling of blasting and assesses the likelihood of these advances being applied to practical oil shale mining problems."

This article describes the implementation of a new jointing process for use between diaphragm wall panels. This process was initially introduced on the SOCATOP work site in uburban Paris (which involved the closing of the western section of the A86 bypass road), on a tunnel ventilation shaft. This brand new system upgrades the potential offered by other types of joints available and enables both ensuring the continuity of panels for structures over 40 m in depth under the strictest safety conditions and constructing shafts with diameters of less than 15 m. A patent for this process has recently been filed.

TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. The seismic wave produced by an explosive is very important in blasting. A true understanding of the wave is only important when considering possible structural damage to buildings located near the blast, but it is also of primary importance when considering rock fragmentation. Because of the importance of the seismic wave to fragmentation, a finda-mental study of the seismic wave and its effect was made at the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co.'s mine at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. Strain gages were used to measure the strain in the rock when nearby explosive charges were detonated. The variance in the circuit voltage caused by changes in the resistance of the strain gage was measured with an oscilloscope and recorded with a Polaroid camera. CONFINED DRILLHOLE CHARGES To record the seismic wave from a confined drillhole explosive charge, a gage was cemented to the bottom of a 4-in diam drillhole. The horizontal gage hole and nine horizontal charge holes were drilled perpendicular to the center line of the 2-39 drift and 4 ft above the floor. The gage hole was 29 in. deep, and the charge holes were drilled so that each bottomed 1 in. deeper than the gage hole. The gage was installed with its axis horizontal and parallel to the 2-39 drift. The charge holes had the following horizontal distances from the gage: hole 3, 3 ft; hole 4, 4 ft; hole 5, 5 ft; hole 9, 9 ft; hole 10, 10 ft; hole 14, 14 ft; and hole 15, 15 ft. Figs. 1 and 2 show the relationships of the gage and the charge holes. Charges of 80 pct special gelatin, which weighed 50, 100, and 150 g were exploded in the charge holes and the seismic waves were recorded. All charges were stemmed with 200 g of mud and detonated with an electric blasting cap. Fig. 3 shows the recorded seismic waves. The reflected components of the waves were too weak to be objectional on these records. Table I shows the data taken from the wave forms. The approximate average velocity of a wave with a 9-ft travel distance was 12,900 fps. Since different charge weights were used, it was necessary to scale the data. The scaled maximum compress ion-strain data and the scaled maximum tens ion-strain data are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 show the strain-distance data from Figs. 4 and 5 converted to a 1-lb charge. The results showed that the wave consisted of an initial compression pulse followed by a tension pulse. The amplitude of the tension pulse approached the amplitude of the compression pulse as the distance between the gage and the shot increased. The decay rate of the seismic wave is very important in the evaluation of the blasting characteristics of a rock. When high-amplitude stresses are produced, as in rock fragmentation, the rate of decay is much more rapid than when small amplitude stresses are produced. In underground mine blasting, the burdens are usually not greater than 6 ft and the decay is very rapid. The objective of asphalt mix design is to produce a mix with optimal performance using available aggregate stockpiles. Often, this process does not take into consideration aggregate plant stockpile inventories or the cost of aggregate in the mix. This is due to the lack of tools that enable the lab technician or the engineer to optimize the mix for good performance while reducing the cost of aggregate and managing the stockpile inventory levels. The Bailey method provides useful guidance on aggregate gradation selection for optimal performance. This work presents a linear programming model of the asphalt mix design problem. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB as an Asphalt Mix Design Optimization (AMIDO) program. The program is successfully validated with real-life data. The results show that AMIDO can be used to successfully produce any mix design with known Bailey method ratios. Also, RAP can be included in a design easily by making use of the Bailey method ratios and AMIDO. This work improves the state-of-the-art in asphalt mix design for dense graded mixes and could potentially be modified for other mixes.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is underlain by karstic limestone. Firm clays, mudstones and siltstoncs of the Kenny Hill Formation overlie the limestone for about two thirds of the city. The remaining third has deep deposits of very soft alluvium, or tin mining slimes, overlying the limestone. It is only recently that large buildings have been constructed in the area. Arup Jururunding have been concerned with several projects located on the limestone, although space here only permits the description of four sites in detail. The experience has allowed the development of a design approach for the foundations. The aim is to make the architectural scheme compatible with the geology. This is not always possible, and examples are given of both situations. The case histories give examples of compensated foundations, and piled foundations include steel H-piles, precast concrete piles, micropiles, bored piles with rock sockets, and barrettes up to 90m deep.

"Schaft Creek is a calc-alkaline porphyry Cu-Mo-(Au) deposit located in northwestern British Columbia. The deposit formed in a volcanic arc setting, likely on a back-arc rifted continental fragment. It is hosted by Late Triassic basaltic to andesitic volcanic rocks of the Stuhini Group (Stikine Terrane), and is associated with porphyritic granodiorite dikes emanating from the nearby Hickman batholith. The age of the Hickman batholith is approximately constrained here by a composite U-Pb zircon date of 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, which is in broad agreement with a well-constrained age for mineralization at Schaft Creek of 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os molybdenite). The deposit is in most respects typical of calc-alkaline porphyry systems, but displays silica-poor sericite-chlorite alteration in mafic country rocks in place of classic phyllic altera¬tion. The deposit comprises three distinct, but related, zones: the northern Paramount zone, the Main zone, and the West Breccia zone. Two phases of mineralization are observed. The first phase occurs as hydro-thermal veins and breccias, and minor disseminations. It consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and pyrite with potassic and sericite-chlorite alteration. The second phase is minor and consists of veins of molybdenite ± specularite, as well as Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide veins without any significant corresponding alteration. Extensive structural modification has affected the deposit both during and after its formation.Schaft Creek est un gîte porphyrique de Cu-Mo-(Au) calco-alkalin situé dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie Britannique. Ce gîte s’est formé dans environnement d’arc volcanique, probablement situé sur un fragment continental bordé par un bassin d’arrière-arc. Le gîte est encaissé par les roches volcaniques basaltiques à andésitiques du Groupe de Stuhini (Terrane de Stikine) d’âge Triasique tardif, et est associé à des dykes de granodiorite porphyrique provenant du batholithe de Hickman avoisinant. L’âge du batholithe de Hickman est estimé par un âge U-Pb composite sur zircon de 222.1 ± 9.6 Ma, lequel est grossièrement en accord avec l’âge de la minéralisation de Schaft Creek, estimé a 222.0 ± 0.8 Ma (Re-Os sur molybdénite).Ce gisement, bien qu’à plusieurs égards typique des systèmes porphyriques calco-alcalins, présente une altération en séricite-chlorite pauvre en silice dans l’encaissant mafique a la place de l’altération phyllique classique. Ce gîte comprend trois zones distinctes bien que connexes : la zone Paramount au Nord, la zone Principale et la zone West Breccia. Deux phases de minéralisation sont observées. La première phase se présente sous forme de veines et de brèches hydrothermales ainsi qu’en disséminations mineures et consiste en bornite, en chalcopyrite, en molybdénite et en pyrite avec une altération potassique et en séricite-chlorite. La seconde phase est mineure et consiste en veines de molybdénite ± spécularite ainsi qu’en veines de sulfures de Cu-Pb-Zn sans association à une altération particulière. "INTRODUCTION This report describes the results obtained from a diamond-drill exploration project performed by the Bureau of Mines on the nickel deposits of the Yakobi Island, Alaska. The Federal Geological Survey 6/ completed a detailed geologic study and mapped the area during the summer of 1940, and a Bureau of Mines examining engineer 7/ made a preliminary examination of the deposits in June 1941, at which time core drilling was suggested as the logical means of determining the extent and grade of the deposits. Equipment and supplies were unloaded on the beach at Yakobi Island on October 21, 1941. The drills were moved to Bohemia Basin, where actual drilling operations wore begun under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer 8/ on November 7, 1941. Two core-drill holes were completed on December 7, 1941. Upon the request of the drilling contractor, operations were recessed owing to severe winter conditions. Work on the project was resumed April 27, 1942, under the direction of another Bureau of Mines engineer 9/ and was completed August 15, 1942. During the 1942 season, 13 core-drill holes were completed, and 10 surface pits and a tunnel were sampled. A total of 5, 191 feet of core-drill hole was drilled in 15 holes during the entire project. The results of drilling and sampling form the basis of this report."

It seems that mining has been in the doldrums for awhile. Except for gold, metals prices remain depressed. And economic conditions in the United States and around the globe have put governments in a financial bind. This affects new building and infra-structure repairs, which, in turn, have a major impact the building materials industry. Add to that the severe environmental and regulatory restrictions placed on the mining industry in developing new mines and expanding existing ones. It’s enough to make a mining engineer/geologist/metallurgist go sell real estate. So why do those employed in the mining industry stay in the business and remain optimistic? Many of them will say that they have been through down cycles before and know that an upswing is in the offing. They also know that society will always need the commodities they produce. And they love the challenge. The challenge in mining’s case is producing commodities as cheaply as possible, in an environmentally sound manner and improving the quality of life in the communities where they work.

GIS and multivariate geometric distribution have been used to predict the association of high-level intrusives with hydrothermal alteration related to iron oxide Cu-Au (IOCG) mineralizing systems. Several examples in the Russian northeast are presented in this paper. IOCG ore deposits can have enormous geological resources containing significant reserves of base, precious, and strategic metals, and hence are economically attractive targets for mineral exploration. To date, examples of this type of mineralization have not been reported from the northeastern area of Russia. The Tarinskiy ore cluster, located in Eastern Yakutia, shows brecciated altered rocks with sulphide and iron oxide cement, which is typical for IOCG mineralization of the iron oxide Cu-Au±U type. This cluster was formed near surface and is linked with the Rep- Yuruinskiy pluton. It has potential to host new world-class precious metal deposits in northeastern Russia

State mining regulations in Queensland stipulate that a mine be provided with an earth installed on surface and that all underground equipment that needs to be earthed should be connected via a copper conductor to this surface grounding point. The regulations further require that all exposed metal surfaces in underground substations be connected to an earth. In a study of earthing conditions at Mount Isa mine it was found that the physical anchoring of metal work at substations (with rockbolts and associated steel mesh) also provides an excellent electrical connection to the country rock. It was established that not only is the mine's earthing system grounded at numerous underground locations but also that such anchor points offer, in general, a path to ground with lower resistance than does the legally required grounding point on the surface. It is recommended that metalliferous mines should utilise a multiple-earth system and not a run earth connected to a single, above-ground earth point

The Autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) mill is essentially a short retention time centrifugal mill, designed to effectively harness extraordinarily high concentrations of input energy for efficient particle size reduction. The mill which has an operating duty band extending from primary to ultra-fine also has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage size reductions of either coarse or fine mineral feeds, in both wet or dry operating modes. This paper covers developments following a recent optimisation programme which confirmed that mill shell speed and the velocity differential between the shell and the rotating internal disc assembly tips could be optimised in relation to specific energy for a given feed rate and feed size providing the product size remains constant. Subsequent test-work further demonstrated the versatility of the mill with duties ranging from the removal of surface contamination associated with heavy mineral concentrate particles to the production of premium ultra-fine talc, from a single stage of size reduction. Open circuit grinding of a rougher gravity concentrate to liberate gold ahead of leaching also highlighted the scope for the application of low cost KAD milling for a range of hydrometallurgical feed preparation duties, which involve fine and ultra-fine grinding.CITATION:Kelly, J and Kelsey, C, 2013. When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

A few of the more progressive mining companies have taken precautions to safeguard employees or man-trips. Specially constructed men-cars -have been provided with special devices or mechanisms to stop the cars on slopes, if the hoisting cable should break. Cars have been equipped with safety chains to connect and hold them together if a coupling should break. Steel frames covered with heavy wire netting have been placed over cars to reduce injuries to the riders from roof fails on slopes. A safety cable passing from the front car to a point above the cable socket on the slope hoisting cable is used frequently as a precaution in case the socket loosens o the main cable breaks at the socket. Such devices are commendable, but the percentage of man-cars and man-trips protected is relatively small - entirely too small. Man-trips that travel level haulage roads are rarely protected safety devices, and haulage roads are seldom inspected by mine officials to determine the condition of roof and ribs.

"This study considers two lead/zinc/silver orebodies which have historically had a problem with pyrite, pyrrhotite and sphalerite contamination in the lead circuit. The problem was previously addressed with high dosages of sodium cyanide as the primary depressant. However, large amounts of cyanide led to environmental problems in the effluent, especially during winter months. The objective was to reduce cyanide consumption while maintaining or improving overall lead grade and recovery via the reduction of the undesirable sulphides.Extensive laboratory and mill testing was necessary to determine the optimal operating parameters for continuous plant application. Evaluation of data received from this testing has shown that selective addition and optimization of the dosage of Unimax SD100 to specific areas of the flotation and grinding circuits has resulted in improved Pb grade and recovery. Parameters such as pH control, regrind operation, the cyanide/Unimax ratio and sulphide mineral content may also affect the performance of the depressant. Each factor is discussed and optimal operating conditions were determined based on the testing.Results are presented for two case studies. Both indicate that Unimax SD100 improves the lead grade/recovery curve by increasing iron and zinc rejection while reducing cyanide consumption and the resulting environmental concerns. 1. Hart"

The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

Process control applications in the minerals processing industry have grown extensively over the years due to the many benefits derived, both financially and operation-wise. Although control theory is widely known, conventional control does not address many of the problems posed by minerals processing circuits. Some of these problems include interactions between process units, large dead times, few and sometimes unreliable measurements of process variables, non-linear systems, disturbances entering the process, processes with varying dynamics, and many more. For the past 26 years Mintek has been active in the field of providing specific, customized solutions for the minerals processing industry. This paper focuses specifically on applications in milling and flotation control. The underlying control principles have been applied to a wide range of other processes including submerged arc furnaces. Advanced control application is implemented on a common advanced control platform, called the PlantStar. Much innovation has been brought to the fore in terms of adapting theoretical techniques and developing new methods to resolve specific milling and flotation circuit issues by using process control. The general approach adopted by Mintek when implementing advanced control is to enforce stabilization of the process as a solid foundation for optimization strategies to be built upon. In doing this, a robust control solution is presented, and the end result is flow and level stability, better product quality regulation, increase in throughput and a stable feed to downstream processes. The MillStar advanced milling control system ensures that the milling circuit is at all times easy to operate while achieving optimum product quality and throughput. Stabilization should include product size regulation and sump level control. Another important aspect of stabilization control is the handling of milling circuit constraints without introducing cyclical behaviour and with minimal disturbance to the final product quality. Process constraints may include factors such as process water limitations, cyclone feed density, and cyclone underflow angle. An optimization strategy should be developed to increase the mill throughput without affecting product quality or introducing mill overloads. The relationship between solids feed and power draw is examined and manipulated for optimization. The interactive nature of flotation circuits and the presence of recirculating streams tend to make satisfactory control almost impossible with conventional techniques such as PI (Proportional plus Integral) or PID (Proportional, Integral and Derivative) control. The FloatStar Level Stabilizer simultaneously considers all the flotation levels in a circuit by use of a multivariable algorithm, and takes compensating action in anticipation of disturbances. The FloatStar Flow Optimizer is an optimization strategy that controls the concentrate flow rate between various sections of a flotation circuit (e.g. Rougher ?Cleaner; Cleaner ?Recleaner). By controlling the concentrate flow between the sections, the mass pull, circulating loads and residence times of the circuit can be stabilized, thereby enhancing the performance of the flotation process. Optimizing grade and recovery are coupled with the dynamic optimization of circulating flows. The FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimizer will maximize the grade in a section, whilst ensuring that recovery or any other process specific limits remain within predefined limits. With successful applications on several milling and flotation plants worldwide processing amongst others PGMs, gold, copper and nickel, Mintek has shown that it is a leader in milling and flotation control innovation
