"Four occurrences of galena-cemented sandstones, exposed in the Lower St. Lawrence - Gaspésie area, are described. They constitute a new, insufficiently explored type of deposit in Quebec.One mineralized body, a minor occurrence, is hosted in Lower Devonian rocks deposited in an estuarine, intertidal river channel during a marine regression; major cements are dolomite and sulphides. Another occurrence, a drilled prospect, is hosted in Upper Silurian rocks deposited unconformably on Cambro Ordovician basement during a marine transgression. With galena and quartz as main cementing minerals, it is similar to some well-known, economic sandstone-lead deposits. A third and fourth, a drilled prospect and a minor occurrence, are hosted in Upper Cambrian rocks deposited on continental slopes. In both, sulphides mainly occupy a secondary porosity. The differences between the third and fourth occurrences are: (1) cementing translucent minerals (carbonates and barite in one; chlorite in the other); (2) chronology of final subsurface dissolution (prior and subsequent to sulphide precipitation, respectively); and (3) important fracture porosity only in the barite-bearing deposit.The diversity of the four occurrences, and the unequal geological knowledge of their respective features, prohibit the formulation of uniform guidelines for further exploration.IntroductionThe attention of the mineral exploration community is drawn to four occurrences of galena-cemented sandstones (Fig. 2A) in the Cambrian of the Taconian Orogen and in the Siluro-Devonian basin of the Lower St. Lawrence and Gaspésie area (Fig. 1). In view of the fact that sandstone-lead deposits (Bjerlykke and Sangster, 1981) are, or have been, mined in several countries (e.g . Laisvall in Sweden: see Rickard et al., 1979; Largentiere in France: see Foglierini et al., 1980), the mere presence of occurrences in Quebec indicates that the mineral potential of some parts of the Appalachians requires further evaluation.Exploration for the deposits considered here is essentially restricted to geological methods and drilJing (e.g . Mainguet Suares and Samama, 1969), since the response to geophysical methods is virtually nil, at least in the initial, surficial stage of an exploration program. As the particular disciplines of geology utilized in exploration depend a great deal on the geological setting of a mineral occurrence, the diversity of the Quebec deposits is of prime importance. Therefore, the four occurrences (Fig. I, Table 1) studied by the authors are herein briefly described with emphasis on their stratigraphic and tectonic setting, and on the evolution of pore space and sequential occlusion of pores and fractures. Engineers at the Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center have been a research program investigating the theory and application of mine sampling. Part of this program is an investigation of the efficiency of sampling methods that involves development of sampling-method theory through simulating ore-deposit samples and assays, using - electronic digital computer. Theoretical developments are checked against actual ore-deposit sampling, assay, and production data by the commonly used polygonal and triangular methods of computing grade and tonnage of ore reserves. To speed the computing procedures, a program has been developed utilizing a medium-size digital computer for computing ore reserves by the polygonal method. This program calculates nine prismoids per minute at a total cost of $0.21 per prismoid. The complete program, written for an augmented IBM 650 computer, is described in detail; it can be used without change for computing ore reserves for a low-grade deposit. Modifications necessary to convert the program to compute ore reserves for virtually any other type of deposit or grouping of ore horizons also are given; however, the program is limited to using only vertical drill-hole data.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. In the years 1850 to 1923, the United States produced 2,426,000 flasks- (73,600 metric tons) of quicksilver worth $120,500,000. California yielded 2,195,000 flasks of this total; the remainder came from Texas, Oregon, Nevada, and A.rizona. Most of this metal has been extracted from low-grade ores, those containing less than 0.5 per cent mercury or 10 pounds per ton. The finished product or " virgin metal" is made at the mine and shipped in flasks. Quicksilver is unique in being the only metal that is liquid at ordinary temperature. Because of this and other physical and chemical properties, it is perhaps more indispensable to industry than any other metal. On the other hand, the quicksilver industry of the world is of vanishing significance" when compared to the major mineral industries with respect to quantity and value of product, capital invested, or the number of men employed. The peculiar value of quicksilver is due to the fact that in some of its applications no substitute is available and in others the substitutes would be unsatisfactory or extremely expensive. Scarcely a branch of science or industry fails to make some use of mercury or its compounds. As a detonator for explosives, mercury fulminate holds first place and in safety and reliability could be replaced only by the highly expensive silver fulminate.t vThrough its use in detonators and in the metallurgy of the precious metals quicksilver is of special importance to mining. In medicine,in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, the production of pigments and antifouling paints, and the general field of experimental science quicksilver is equally indispensable.

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pinpoint the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable temperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity. Hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples; reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis; and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimization and troubleshooting. In addition, these catalyst management tools will give continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed, providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking operating data, temperature optimization and good record keeping.

"AbstractIn driven piles, the gradual dissipation of excess pore water pressure and consequently the soil setup significantly contribute to increasing the pile capacity with time. The question is risen that how the scale differences affect the stress state variations around the pile shaft and at the pile tip? Would the CPT predictions better correlate with End-Of-Drive (EOD) or Beginning of Restrike (BOR) conditions? On the other hand, are the proposed a and ß parameters for clayey soils mostly predicting the EOD or BOR situation? The main objective of this paper is to back calculate the a and ß parameters from CPT profiles, pile Dynamic Load Tests (DLT) at the EOD and BOR as well as Static Load Tests (SLT) and evaluate how they compare with those suggested in literature. Four precast 400 mm square concrete piles driven in North Azadegan Oilfield in Khuzestan Province were selected for the comparisons. CPT test results were available from the extensive geotechnical investigation at the study site. DLT tests using PDA were carried out at EOD, 1 day and 14-day BOR on all the 4 piles. All the piles were SLT tested as well. The UniCone software was used to estimate the tip and shaft resistances using 4 methods including the Dutch, Eslami & Fellenius, LCPC and Schmertmann. The results indicate that the a-method based on the proposed values in literature has predicted a shaft capacity of 90% of the 14-day BOR. This is while the ß-method has predicted a shaft capacity equivalent to 1-day BOR results only. Therefore, both methods have under-predicted the shaft capacities compared to real capacities measured after the significant soil setup in the study area. Two of the CPT methods have underestimated, one has overestimated and one has matched the estimated 60-day capacity."

INTRODUCTION Countries that are currently developing their mineral potential have unique information systems requirements to support these activities. The mining laws usually grant the State considerable authority over the process. In many instances, the mining laws give a government agency the responsibility for granting and controlling exploration permits and development concessions. This is the case in Costa Rica. The Direcion of Geologia, Minas, y Hidrocarburos (DGMH) of the Ministerio de Industria, Energia y Minas (MIEM) is responsible for the management and operation of the National Mining Register. This paper describes the results of two studies of the information system requirements to support the National Mining Registry as well as those supporting some of the other function of the DGMH. The first of the studies reviewed the situation before the installation of computer equipment. The second study evaluated the installed systems. BACKGROUND Historical Perspective Mining in Costa Rica is at present a relatively minor part of the economy. It consists primarily of industrial minerals and gold production. Gold production is largely by small-scale miners and may be more substantial than reported. There is considerable interest on the part of the Government in both having a better understanding of the existing mining industry and promoting future development. Mining law was first provided by the Ordinanza de Mineral (of 1830). This was replaced by the first Mining Code of 1953. Apparently, one of the first problems caused by the 1953 law was the granting of concessions which were not worked. A 1968 agreement with ALCOA also resulted in political conflict. The Government worked on a new Mining Code for many years and in 1982 the current Mining Code was enacted. Draft implementing regulations were prepared in April 1984. Mining Code of 1982 The Mining Code of 1982 addresses most aspects of mining in Costa Rica including the declaration that all mineral resources are to be the property of the State. The State may grant exploration permits and exploitation permits. The exploitation of hydrocarbons, radioactive minerals and certain water resources was reserved to the state. The DGMH was given authority to settle placer claim disputes, maintain a registry of exploration permits, and exploitation concessions. and generally supervise mining activity. Towards this, the Mining Code of 1982 includes rather detailed requirements for the processing of application for permits and concessions. Mining Code Application Requirements The following briefly describes the requirements to give the reader a feeling for the complexity of the process. Currently, over 1,000 active applications, exploration permits and exploitation concessions are being monitored under the process. The number remains relatively consistent in that the number of new applications is usually about the same as the applications that are put aside. The time and date of the filing must be certified by the DGMH. The application must include all the information specified in the Mining Code. If incomplete, DGMH must notify the applicant of the deficiencies or omissions and direct that the applicant correct the deficiencies or omissions within 8 business days (a single 30 business-day extension is allowable). If the applicant does not respond as directed, the application is deemed as not having been filed and the pertinent information is placed in the files. The DGMH must reject the application outright and direct it be placed in the files in the following cases: (a). If the new application covers the area of a previous permit or concession, either being processed or already granted.

A rock mass classification system has been developed for support estimation in mines using caving methods. The developed system (MBR System) accepts readily-obtainable geotechnical properties, and mining geometry, to develop a rating that permits recommendations for drift support in block caving mines. The data base includes major active United States caving mines. The method is intended to be used for planning and estimating purposes and for preliminary support design. The Manual explains the organization and nature of the MBR System, its derivations, details of required input data, methods for assessing the data and for developing rock mass ratings, and techniques for selecting the most appropriate mine support recognizing mine requirements and desired stability. A worked example is provided.

This Bureau of Mines study reviews the geological factors that affect methane in the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia, including overburden, coalbed structure, type of and changes in lithology above and below the Beckley coalbed, and presence of fractures in the coal and rock adjacent to the Beckley. Depending on the depth, the Beckley coalbed emits from 216 to 520 ft3 of methane per ton of coal mined, and the Bureau estimates that methane emission in a deep, extensively developed mine in this area may exceed 3,000 ft3 per day per ton of coal mined. Average face cleat and butt cleat trends in the Beckley coalbed measured underground are N 33° W and N 53° E, respectively. Close cleat spacing con¬tributes to the friable nature of the Beckley and provides easy movement for methane and water. Because rider coals, splits, and carbonaceous shales may contribute methane to mine emissions, predictions of methane emission based on gas content of the Beckley coalbed alone may be conservative. Beckley coalbed reserves in the study area are 234 million tons. The gas content of the Beckley coalbed averages 407 ft3/ton, and the coalbed gas reserves are 108 billion ft3.

Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

As the theme of this conference is æRediscover OtagoÆ it would seem appropriate to revisit the era of the gold rushes and subsequent mining industry which rapidly advanced settlement and economic prosperity for Otago, and left permanent reminders in the form of historic mining sites, many of which are now encompassed within the Otago Goldfields Park. I have been invited to give a paper at this conference on the subject of æHistoric Goldfields of Central OtagoÆ. As well as having a working involvement with historic areas through my employment with the Department of Conservation, I have a personal interest in the early goldmining industry of Central Otago as my grandfather came out from Scotland in the 1890s to help construct gold dredges on the Molyneux. My grandfather made headlines in the local paper in 1920 when he believed he saw a New Zealand otter at Island Block near Beaumont - but that's another conservation trail that I will not pursue any further today! For this paper I intend to divide my time to cover the following topics. Firstly, I would like to sketch a mental picture of the characteristics that make up the Central Otago landscape, and the general perception that early miners must have had when viewing this foreign land. Then I would like to briefly discuss the changes and the consequences in the early gold rush to Central. Finally, I would like+ to discuss the establishment of the Otago Goldfields Park, which I will illustrate with several slides.

The brief resume of the activities of the Metallurgical Division that appears annually in its progress reports series serves a useful purpose by making available a rather comprehensive but concise recapitulation of the current work, and publications of the division. An unprecedented opportunity to attack the problem of producing ferro-grade material from low-grade domestic manganese ores effectively was provided by the act designated as Public 667 of the 76th Congress of the United States, approved June 26, 1940, which made available an appropriation for "Expediting Production of Equipment and. Supplies for National Defense." Although the funds were not immediately available to the division, good progress has been made in the, solution of the many and diverse problems presented in the studies undertaken to determine the best methods for the recovery of useful products from a wide variety of manganese ores.

ABSTRACT: Some residential areas of the iron basin of Lorraine (in the North-East of France) are affected by noxious gas emissions (under oxygenated, carbon dioxide loaded and radon loaded gas mixtures). Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and the external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes within buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Einige Wohngebiete der Eisenmulde Lothringen (im Nordöst Frankreich) werden von Ausgasung gesundsheitsschädlichen sauerstoffarmen Mischungen, die mit Kohlendioxid und Radon beladen sind, betroffen. Untersuchungen am Ort haben gezeigt, wie diese Gasstroemung von natürlichem thermischen Luftumlauf zwischen den alten Bergwerken und der externen Atmosphäre ausgelöst wird. Erstickung und Vergiftung sind die wichtigste Risiken, die mit dieser Gasströmung und ihrer möglichen Speicherung in begrenzten Lokalen zusammenhängen. Eine weitere Untersuchung wird durchgefuehrt so dass man die Herkunft der Gaserzeugung in den alten Grubenräume besser versteht. Der ersten Hypothese folgend, Ausgasung von Kohlensäure liegt vor allem an dem hydro-geo-chemischen Prozess, der Pyritrösten mit der säuren Auflösung von Karbonate verbindet SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Gas, Ausgasung, Bergwerk, Strömung, Pyrit RESUME: Certaines agglomérations du bassin ferrifère lorrain (au Nord-Est de la France) sont affectées par des émanations de mélanges gazeux sous-oxygénés et chargés en certains gaz nocifs (dioxyde de carbone, radon…). Les investigations effectuées in situ ont montré que les écoulements gazeux à l’origine de ces émanations sont liées au phénomène de tirage naturel entre les anciens travaux miniers et la surface. Les principaux risques engendrés par ces émanations de gaz et son accumulation possible dans des endroits confinés sont l’asphyxie et l’intoxication. Une étude est en cours afin d’expliquer l’origine de la modification de l’air au sein des vieux travaux miniers. Les émissions de dioxyde de carbone seraient dues à des processus hydro-geo-chimiques associant l’oxydation de la pyrite et la dissolution de carbonates. Heavy metal-containing wastewater from hydrometallurgical processes of lead-zinc was treated by biologics in a 200 m3/h industrial scale experiment. The result shows that Zn concentration declined from 50.28 mg/L~240.81 mg/L to 0.21 mg/L~1.98 mg/L, Pb from 1.00 mg/L~13.47 mg/L to 0.083 mg/L~0.71 mg/L, Cu from 0.24 mg/L~2.38 mg/L to 0.059 mg/L~0.40 mg/L, Cd from 2.12 mg/L~23.47 mg/L to 0.011 mg/L~0.071 mg/L and As from 0.50 mg/L~6.00 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L~0.10 mg/L. The concentrations of the above heavy metals in the treated water were lower than that in Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB8978~1996) in China. Furthermore, the treated wastewater was recycled and reused in smelter plant. Zinc content in hydrolytic sludge reached up to 34.04%, which indicates that this sludge can be used to recover valuable metals.

Oriel Resources has with the support of SRK (Cardiff) and DRA and Mintek (South Africa) carried our a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to recover high grade chrome ore from its Voskhod deposit very close to Chromtau that is near to Aktobe in Kazakhstan. Voskhod is a large podiform ore body that contains nearly 20million tons of chromite grading about 48% Cr2O3 and with a Cr/Fe ratio of over 3/1. Selected bore hole core samples were obtained from the confirmation drilling programme during the DFS phase of the project in 2005 for pilot plant test work to design the mineral beneficiation plant. The chrome ore is characterised by four main types, namely high grade lumpy and chip sized ore, high-grade fine ore, lower grade (subordinate) lumpy ore and lower grade fine ore. Gravity separation tests carried out by Mintek showed that the large density difference between the high grade (at over 3.7t/m3) and lower grade ore (at less than 2.97t/m3 ) should ensure very good separation in the DMS drum and DMS cyclone stages resulting in high recoveries of Cr2O3 - rich chromite ore products. Very high chrome ore grades of up to 64% Cr2O3 and Cr/Fe ratios of 4 to 1 were obtained at an 80% mass yield from selected samples of lumpy and chip ore size fractions. The overall predicted recovery from the design work on the mine and plant is expected to be closer to about 70% of the ROM (Run of Mine) feed. DRA has completed the design of the mineral processing plant to recover about 900 kt/a of chrome ore from the 1.3 Mt/a of ROM feed. The plant has been sized to handle up to 1.5 Mt/a and will also be able to address the variability in ore feed as different regions in the deposit are mined. The lumpy high-grade product and the chips size fraction is expected to grade around 48% Cr2O3 and the fine concentrate between 56 and 58%Cr2O3 The ratio of products is expected to be about 70, 15 and 15 percent respectively but will vary to some extent during the expected 20 year life of the mining operation based on including the associated adjacent Karaagash deposit together with the Voskhod deposit. The prediction of the product split from the processing plant depends on many factors such as the geology, mineralogy, mining, handling and metallurgical processing. An overall process flow model has been developed that covers the ROM ore, the various types of chrome ore feed to the mineral beneficiation plant, the projected products and the subsequent smelting of the chromite ores to produce High Carbon Ferrochromium. The model allows the optimisation of the quality of the chrome ore in terms of Cr2O3 content, Cr/Fe ratio and recovery to be studied. This information can also be evaluated in terms of the economic requirements for smelting High Carbon Ferrochromium (HCFeCr) at a given location. Oriel is planning to supply chrome ore to Ferrochrome plants mostly in China and Russia. The use of the model will assist to maximise the value of the Voskhod project to its owners and also assist the users of the chrome ore in selecting the appropriate supply quality to meet their needs for a given smelter operation. The smelting of high grade Voskhod ore requires a limited addition of about 5 to 7% quartz to flux the MgO and Al2O3 and about 25% coke as a reducing agent to produce an alloy containing from about 65 to 74%chromium depending on the Cr/Fe ratio.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits æPrecious and base metal-richÆ and æSn-Ag-polymetallicÆ ofNorthern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centres.   Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and polymetallic provinces.

Construction of a new approach embankment for a railroad bridge over a river in Southern California required placing up to 12 ft of fill over soft to medium stiff silts and clays along an approximate 1,500-ft long stretch. The embankment, situated within a narrow railroad right-of-way between an existing live track and existing buildings, would have been susceptible to excessive settlement that could damage existing buildings and numerous underground utilities if regular weight soil fill had been placed over the unimproved ground. To limit total and differential static settlements to tolerable levels, a design was developed using a combination of mechanically stabilized earth wall with lightweight cellular concrete fill and rigid inclusions ground improvement. This paper describes the design of the ground improvement system, construction methods used, and challenges of working next to live railroad traffic. Ground improvement quality control and assurance measures, and verification of performance by settlement monitoring are also addressed. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The 0.9-mile San Diego River Double Track (SDRDT) project is located on the Los Angeles-San Diego- San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Corridor in San Diego, California. The project includes the replacement of the existing 900-ft long single track railroad bridge over the San Diego River with twin double track structures. Construction of the project is phased and closely coordinated with the associated Mid-Coast light rail project (San Diego Trolley Blue Line Extension). The new bridge is a 7-span, twin steel, through girder structure supported by six cast-in-place reinforced concrete pier caps and two abutments. The large diameter cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) foundations are up to 9 ft in diameter, with upper portions encased in a 1.5-in.-thick permanent steel casing. The north abutment approach embankment includes a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall up to approximately 10 ft high and 1,520 ft long. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the north approach embankment. The project site is characterized by challenging geotechnical and seismic conditions. The site contains liquefiable soils interbedded with soft cohesive soils, underlain by competent layers of sand/gravel/cobble and other sedimentary formations. Static settlement of the new railroad, crossing utilities and adjacent buildings was a primary design concern for the north approach embankment.

The Building Research Establishment installed a base load cell in a driven cast-in-place pile prior to it being tested under vertical load. The monitored base loads were found to be significantly less than could have been predicted by current design methods. The less than expected capacity was attributed to the drilling out procedure. An electro-level system installed in a second similarly formed pile, provided detailed information on the performance of the pile under lateral load. The information obtained was used to check several current design methods for laterally loaded piles. The findings show the potential dangers of attempting to improve design parameters from only limited performance data.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance.
