The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomic. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.

The ultraviolet spectrum of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate (the principal constituent of Dow flotation collector Z-200) in water and of Z-200 itself in water was found to have an absorption peak at 242 nanometers(nm). The height of this peak was found to be directly proportional to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate concentrations up to 15 p.p.m. Z-200 contains about 90 per cent isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate and the heightof the peak was proportionately lower, but obeyed the straight line relationship up to 15 p.p.m. This showed the potential value of spectrophotometric measurements for the determination of Z-200 residuals in flotation liquors.Methyl ethyldithiocarbamate (an impurity in Z-200) increased the peak height slightly, but other impurities in Z-200, xanthates, and most inorganic salts present in flotation liquors do not interfere. However nitrate ion and thiosulphate ion have absorption peaks which overlap the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate peak.The simplest general method to overcome this effect is to extract the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate into cyclohexane and to measure the absorbance of the extract.The maximum absorbance of the cydohexane extract was at 247 nm and the peak height at this wavelength was found to be directly proportional to the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate or Z-200 concentration in the original aqueous solution. An alternative method is to measure the spectrum of the original aqueous solution using the aqueous raffinate from extraction as a reference solution. This gives the spectrum due to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate alone and measurement of the absorbance at 242 nm gives the concentration in the original aqueous solution. Both methods give the same value for the concentration of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate in the original solution.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Brooklyn Basin Project is a multi-billion-dollar development of the former Port of Oakland 9th Avenue Terminal located along the Oakland Estuary of California. A centerpiece of the development is the 10-acre shoreline park which will be built on a 1,200 ft long by 225 ft wide historic wharf. The wharf was built in the 1930’s on concrete and timber piles with a flat concrete slab. Prior to constructing the wharf, a rock dike was placed to protect the shoreline. The presence of the rock dike increased the hazards from lateral spreading of the underlying bay mud and non-ductile shear failure of piles driven through the dike. To open the park to the public, the wharf required a seismic retrofit in compliance with the California Building Code. The paper presents the results and conclusions of the following topics: • Structural condition assessment and repair strategies for the existing wharf deck, piles and jackets • Application of the California Building Code (CBC Ch31F) for the performance-based seismic evaluation of existing piers and wharves • Nonlinear pushover analysis of the wharf including the combination of inertial and kinematic effects • Impact of rock dike on lateral spreading and kinematic effects and the significance of existing piles in stabilizing the lateral spreading of the rock dike • Retrofit strategies for the wharf to meet the required seismic performance requirements per the California Building Code and reduce the demands on existing piles which were driven through the rock dike INTRODUCTION The 65-acre Brooklyn Basin Development project is located in Oakland, California. The project consists of 3,100 housing units, 200,000 sq. ft of retail and commercial space, along with various parks and public access improvements along the Oakland Estuary. A centerpiece of the development is the 10-acre Shoreline Park which will be built on a 1,200 ft long by 225 ft wide historic wharf. The wharf was built in the 1930’s on concrete and timber piles with a flat concrete slab. As shown in Figure 1, the wharf deck and piles support the 9th Avenue Terminal Building.

Viscosity measurement was carried out over a narrow range of silica content around the fayalite composition. A wide range of temperature and oxygen potential was covered where the slag was completely liquid. In order to keep the slag composition and the Fe3+/Fe2+ratio constant, theCO2/CO ratio was kept constant as the temperature was varied. Increasing the Fe3+content has little effect on viscosity for slags with a silica mole fraction of 0.31. At higher silica contents, increasing the Fe3+content brings about a small decrease in the viscosity.

The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmentallegislation has received increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. There is thus the need to increase the base of knowledge on the existing practices of spoil dump design and rehabilitation. Efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of spoil dump reshaping techniques for mine rehabilitation assists in maintaining the expected standards of environmental compliance. As part of the overall approach for effective engineering design ofspoil dumps, a comprehensive, computational and efficient tool isrequired for assessing the economics and productivity of existing spoil dump reshaping practices for efficient mine rehabilitation. Such a design tool is useful in linking current spoil dump environmental management practices with engineering design planning and economic impact evaluation. This paper identifies the processes for the economic impact evaluation for existing spoil dump reshaping practices and proposed final site dump designs. Selection of an efficient spoil dump design at optimum costs will ensure operational efficiency. A case study is presented identifying economic impact evaluation in earthmoving equipment selection and the costs involved for the reshaping of spoil dumps to that of varying final site designs.

The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

A vehicle proximity warning–collision avoidance system is being developed using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two-and a-half years of research, software development, and laboratory testing, field tests were carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate GPS accuracy and overall system effectiveness under rugged operating conditions. This article describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discusses the GPS accuracy tests and overall system tests that were carried out during the year 2001 at the Colorado School of Mines Survey Field and at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona. INTRODUCTION Background Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities of the world. As many as 33 million people live in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures although the city occupies only 0.6% of the area of the country. The network of Metropolitan Expressways serves as a major artery for daily physical distribution in Tokyo. The Central Circular Route of the Metropolitan Expressway (MECCR) is located innermost among the three circular routes in Tokyo (Figure 1). Once completed, MECCR is expected to drastically mitigate traffic congestion in the central Tokyo area and provide drivers wider varieties of options in route selection. Alleviating congestion is estimated to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The eastern and northern sections and part of the western section of MECCR have been completed with the total length reaching 33 km. The western section will be extended southward by approximately 4 km in the spring of 2010. An 11-km-long western section of MECCR that is currently being constructed is composed mostly of tunnels. A large number of power supply, gas supply, telephone, drinking water and sewerage pipes have been placed under the Yamatedori avenue along which MECCR is being constructed. The shield tunneling method has therefore been adopted for constructing tunnels along the route. The method involves the advancement of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the ground simultaneously assembling segmental rings within the shield. The method not only enables the building of highway tunnels more quickly and efficiently than other methods but also minimizes the effects of construction work on the surrounding area and the environment. Constructing the tunnel using the conventional cut-and-cover method might have required large amounts of time and cost because relocating the numerous objects buried under the Yamatedori avenue might have been necessary during tunnel construction. It was also considered desirable to place the tunnel at a depth of 30 m or more from surface to prevent tunnel construction from adversely affecting railways because the tunnel was expected to cross eleven railways and subways. This is one of the reasons for selecting shield tunneling as an effective method. The shield tunneling method was finally adopted for a length of 7 km in the 11-km western section of MECCR. The shield tunneling method was also employed in the Ohashi Tunnel located southernmost in the 11-km western section of MECCR. This paper describes the construction of the Ohashi Shield Tunnel.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. The Mitsubishi Process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates. Continuous converting originates from the application of the proven technology of a lime-ferrite slag (CaO-FeOX-Cu2O) on the Converting Furnace (C-furnace). Recent improvements on the C-furnace operation have included increasing the processing of recycled materials and the investigation of alternative fluxing agents. However, some minor oxides adversely affect C-furnace operation, with respect to magnetite behavior of the slag, with the most significant impact having been observed with the silica content of the slag. This paper will quantify the impact of silica on the lime-based slag, and discusses the controls that have been identified to sustain continuous converting operation.

The dissolution of iron oxides in mixtures of acids is fairly uncommon but can result in a more efficient dissolution process. The objective in this work was to investigate the dissolution of synthetic hematite powder in mixtures of oxalic and sulfuric acid. Experiments were done at different acid ratios and temperatures. An increase in temperature from 15 to 35 °C increased solubility, whereas an increase from 35 to 50 °C did not change the solubility but had a profound effect on the kinetics. An important finding was that oxalic acid advanced the dissolution process since increasing the amount of oxalic acid in the system resulted in faster kinetics and higher solubilities. The dissolution kinetics were well described with the Kabai model, which was the only studied model able to describe the whole reaction time. However, the solid specific constant a varied for the different acid ratios and this is argued to be a result of changes in the solid phase. The changes in the constant a were not in line with the original study of Kabai, which indicates that a cannot be the solid specific constant but it can be the constant connected to dissolving media describing the changes in the dissolution mechanism.

Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.
