"This paper proposes a new direction to implement an underground mine communication system. It presents actual underground communication systems and discusses their technological limits. A new system based on a wireless local area network (WLAN), together with its main systems characteristics, is then proposed. This paper also presents an experimental protocol for radio frequency propagation measurements. Finally, the paper describes the projected implementation of a WLAN in an experimental mine. IntroductionDuring the last decade, a number of Canadian mining companies have invested in modern communications systems in order to automate processes and reduce operational costs. Safety of miners is also a concern, regulated by health and safety regimes.Underground communication systems rely mainly on analog technology (especially the leaky feeder). Digital upgrades have been made to modernize this technology using a coaxial or fibre optic cable to transmit voice, documents, commands, controls, and video. Therefore, all wired equipment can benefit from an increase in efficiency from the digital technology.However, when it comes to mobile equipment, the only medium was, and is, still radio waves. With the advent of the wireless local area network (WLAN) standard, one can use a technology similar to that of the cellular phone to connect transparently different equipment. WLAN enables the transmission at rates higher than 2 M bits of voice, documents, commands, controls, identification, and of course, digital video. This technology was developed with inbuilding use in mind. Now, one can try to adapt it to underground mines."

During the last two decades, China has expanded its iron and steel industry very quickly, from less than 100 Mt/a steel production to over 700 Mt/a. It caused big increases in both domestic iron ore production and imported iron ore quantities year by year. The mode of iron ore supply has changed from almost all domestic supply to major tonnes of imported ore plus domestic ore supply. Over 200 blast furnaces with volumes larger than 1000 m3 each have been built and put into operation. Sinter machines have been enlarged quickly. There are now 135 sinter machines with =200 m2 sintering area each. Pellet production increased from 11.94 Mt in 1999 to 210 Mt in 2011, resulting from rapidly increasing domestic concentrate supply and rapid development of the grate-kiln process. The typical ferrous burden constitution is high basicity sinter plus pellets plus lump. The pellet proportion increased and the sinter proportion decreased gradually. A lot of technical improvements, like deep bed sintering, sintering with a high ratio of limonite, composite sintering, pellet process optimisation, a high ratio of hematite in pelletisation, blast furnace operation with low-grade ferrous burdens and hazardous element control, etc have been made to enhance iron burden quality and to reduce hot metal cost. Chinese iron and steel production is expected to increase slightly in the next few years. Its overcapacity should be controlled effectively. Given the variations of iron ore supply, pellet production will keep progressing in terms of production scale and pellet quality, the sintering process will be improved further by various measures to utilise different ores efficiently, and ferrous burden constitution will be optimised continuously to realise the lowest cost of hot metal production.CITATION:Sha, Y and Wang, Z, 2013. A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

Barite In 1987, United States mine production of barite increased 15.870, consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 6.97, and imports are estimated to have fallen by 19.57. World mine production decreased by 137, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of US produced barite, fob mine, decreased 1.4%, according to the Bureau. The declared value for cif US port of all imported unground barite during the first 10 months of 1987 decreased from $39.02/t ($35.40 per st) to $37.16/t ($33.71 per st), the Bureau stated. Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of' barite with 637r of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, California, Tennessee, and Montana. The Bureau of Mines estimates 657 of the US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35°/r was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector continued to increase. Of the total consumption (used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers), it is estimated that 8070 was used in drilling fluids and 2017( in the non-oilfield sector - barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased slightly. But the average number of rotary rigs operating decreased from 964 in 1986 to 936 in 1987. This is the lowest number of operating rigs reported since 1949. The increase in consumption in this sector is due to an increase of rigs operating in the US Gulf and other higher consumption areas over 1986. Crude barite imports were estimated to be down by 19.5% in 1987. Still, they accounted for 637 of the barite consumed in the US. During the first 10 months, China continued to be the leading exporter to the US with 86.970, followed by Mexico with 10.997, and Morocco 2.107(. About 5Y of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Ground barite imports dropped from 19.8 kt to 8.8 kt (21,800 st to 9800 st) in 1987. Of this amount, 1.4 kt (1598 st) was used in drilling muds and the remainder of the non-oilfield use. During 1987, a few more grinding plants that supplied the drilling fluid market were closed. Along the US Gulf Coast, there are 13 operating plants versus a high of 31 in 1981. Cameron Offshore reopened its grinding plant at Cameron, LA. New Riverside Ochre Co. of Cartersville, GA, purchased a jigging-washing plant in Missouri and plans to place it in operation this year on a new deposit near Cartersville, GA. Milpark purchased Hughes Drilling Fluid in 1987 and operates under Milpark. US mine production will probably stay about the same as 1987. Price increases in the 10 % range for imported ore are expected due to water freight and the weak dollar. Baker Hughes estimates the average number of operating rotary rigs at 1070. A slight increase is expected in the non-drilling fluid market (chemicals, glass, and filler). Bauxite and alumina L. Baumgardner, US Bureau of Mines Domestic bauxite production in 1987, expressed as dried equivalent, was 581 kt (640,400 st), a 14% increase over 1986. US mine production amounted to less than 170 of total world production. Virtually none of the domestic bauxite was consumed in the production of primary alumina metal. About 30% of the bauxite produced by US mines was calcined to produce 117 kt (128,970 st) for use in abrasives, catalysts, chemicals, proppants, and refractories. Most of the uncalcined bauxite was refined to specialty aluminum oxide (alumina) forms. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 10 countries in 1987. Principal suppliers of the 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) were Guinea (4270), Jamaica (3501,), Australia (127), and Brazil (57). In all the industries that require blasting operations using explosives, there exists numerous unwanted side effects of the blast which may pose as environmental hazards. These hazards face prominence, especially in India, where there are very stringent rules and regulations governing the use of explosives. The environmental hazards associated with blasting operations as a whole can be tacked successfully to a certain extent depending upon the ultimate expectations of ,the post-blast effects and the limitations of the environmental obligations as specified by the authorities from time to time and from place to place. The main parameters which require attention to limit the post-blast results to the optimum level are ground vibrations, dust pollution, gas pollution, air blast effects, noise pollution & fly rocks etc.

"A number of high wall failures have occurred in some of the Alberta coal strip mines of a type called by the authors ""Multiple block plane shear slope failure "". They cause rapid deterioration of the dragline bench, reduced productivity and maintenance costs.The failures are invariably associated with the presence of almost horizontal (± 5 degrees) bentonitic clay bands in the overburden, often immediately above the coal seam, and regress behind the slope as a series of tension cracks which isolate detached blocks. As many as 17 sets of cracks have been observed, at lateral distances in excess of five times the slope height from the toe.The theory of this mode of failure is presented and a limiting equilibrium computer program which will produce deterministic or probabilistic (Monte Carlo) solutions is briefly described. A case history of one such failure is documented. It is shown that the extent of the regressive failure is exceedingly sensitive to the water table elevation, leading to the conclusion that drainage, if practical, represents the best control strategy. Precast prestressed concrete piles designed to be end-bearing in a sand stratum at Drax Power Station met with extremely variable resistance during driving. Some piles came to virtual refusal almost immediately on entering the sand whereas others were driven to considerable penetration with very low resistance. Redriving and load tests on piles experiencing low resistance on initial drive showed that take up in strength occurred over a relatively short period of time. Investigations involving the use of pneumatic piezometers revealed the development of significant excess pore pressures during driving. Samples from boreholes showed that piles met the least resistance when the sand had a high silt content. Comparison with the original site investigation data demonstrated the difficulties in predicting detailed pile behaviour. The varied behaviour could not be related to the original borehole logs or to SPT or static cone penetrometer results. The factors controlling pile driving behaviour were essentially geological and could only be explained with reference to local soil grading.

"This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. Physical inspection (e.g. nail inserted in rubber liners)"

Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

This paper presents the experimental investigation on the ultimate skin friction of batter piles. The model piles were pushed in medium dense sand deposits at different inclinations up to 30 with respect to the vertical and tested under axial compression loads. The decrease in the total skin resistance with increasing pile inclination can be explained in terms of the reduction of the ave­rage mobilized angle of friction between the pile shaft and sand. The analysis, which takes into account asymmetrical earth pressure distributions around the pile shaft, showed good agreement with experimental results.

IF the observation of our British friends is true that Americans put new records in bigness above everything else then the 150th meeting of the Institute was not the grand success it seemed to be. Just why the attendance slumped a little this year is anyone's guess, but the favourite explanation seemed to be that half the country is planning to come to the New York World's Fair this summer and that two trips from the hinterland to the me- tropolis, with another to San Francisco of course, can hardly be justified with the present condition of the stock market and the prices of the products of our mines. Certainly, some were pre- vented from coming too by the epidemic of respiratory afflictions that was rampant in February. Unfortunately. several succumbed after they had reached New York.

This information circular describes mining methods and practices at New Cornelia Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Ajo, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The New Cornelia mine (fig. 1) is at Ajo, a town in southwestern Arizona (fig. 2) on Arizona State Highway 85 in the western part of Pima County. The [oncentrator] and smelter are near the mine (fig. 3). Copper ore is mined, crushed, ground, and concentrated, and the concentrates are smelted. Copper is cast in anode form and sent to the Phelps Dodge Corp. refinery in El Paso, Tex.

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, a representative of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and research contractors for the Bureau of Mines met with other Government and industry representatives at three seminar locations in December 1980 to discuss the findings and products of Bureau research on mine safety training. The research program is aimed at providing assistance to the mining community in its efforts to reduce industrial-type, human-error accidents through research establishing performance based methods and media for employee training. Research emphasis is directed toward development of baseline materials and instructional models; development of methods for structuring and evaluating health and safety, supervisory, and occupational training; and the continued investigation and application of current learning and simulation technology that could significantly enhance the effectiveness of training opportunities.

This study investigates the evolution of dimensional properties of grinding products, namely, the mass, the surface area, the length, and the number of particle distributions with the energy input in a ball mill. The size analysis of the mill products enables the calculation of the mass distribution of each material at predetermined size classes and then the determination of the other dimensional properties by taking into consideration the geometry of the particles. Based on the distribution of dimensional properties, an effort was made to determine whether the grinding products are fractal in nature. The effect of material type and grinding conditions on the relationship between the dimensional properties and the specific energy input was also investigated. Special importance was assigned to the study of the specific surface area and the surface area production rate, both during the initial grinding stages and at higher energy levels. The determination of the surface area production rate allows the identification of the grinding limit and the maximum specific surface area which could theoretically be achieved. This approach has as ultimate objective the maximization of energy efficiency and subsequently the minimization of the high grinding cost.

Finite element models were generated of two submerged arc furnaces of different geometries. A 48MW circular furnace and a 68MW 6-in-line rectangular furnace were studied. The electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal were included in the model. ANSYS/Multiphysics was used to predict the current density distribution in the electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal as a result of the three phase AC current. The effect of the electrode immersion on the current path was studied. The ?proximity effect? caused a pronounced asymmetry in the electrode currents in the circular furnace, whilst the electrode currents in the rectangular furnace exhibited radial symmetry. The current distribution in the melt in both furnaces indicated that the bulk of the current flows between phases. The current density is greatest between electrodes. Results were compared to qualitatively similar published work, operating experience and results of furnace dig-outs.

The effectiveness of an industry's safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.
