The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

Paiam is a new township in the high mountains of Papua New Guinea built in association with the Porgera Joint Venture mine, one of the world's largest and most remote open cut gold mines. The Paiam town project is an interesting and genuine attempt at building sustainability into a community associated with a mine. A result of a tri-party agreement between a resource developer, government and land owners, this town is a good example of appropriate utilisation of benefits, obtained from resource development, directed at achieving a sustainable environment at local and regional levels.   Mining brought technology and income to the region, although as most mine staff fly directly in and out, local landowners considered there was a limited flow of benefits within the nearby townships. An agreement with government and mine was reached that more mine personnel and their families be housed locally. In 1998, we, a firm of Landscape Architects and Heritage Consultants based in Cairns, Queensland, were engaged to assist develop the fledgling town of Paiam into a livable and sustainable town and to produce material that would convey that information to stakeholders.   The design focused on establishing a sustainable town, with livability, urban form, aesthetics and opportunities for economic, social and cultural development. Aiming to be a livable town for locals and mine staff it included a market place designed as a focus for town life, essential for social cohesion and economic opportunities.   Located at 2200 m on steep rainforest clad topography, the town development has been laid out using an appropriate urban form based on organic village layouts. Clusters of houses allow for a common public area so children's play is monitored assisting with a sense of community similar to a traditional defensible village. Aesthetical consideration helps in developing community pride whilst maximising potential for development of a tourist industry.   Opportunities for ongoing economic development were incorporated in the design and construction process. These included developing skills and trades to service the region and to provide skills, development, income opportunities and infrastructure to last beyond mine closure. Administration procedures were set in place to form the basis of good governance.   The shift from traditional subsistence lifestyle to a sustainable community with traditional attributes was the project's goal and is being achieved.

The effects of solidification rate on the cast microstructures of aluminum alloys 6009 and 6016 have been investigated with directionally cooled laboratory-size ingots, at 0.2-10.1 K/s and 0.4- 23.1 K/s, respectively. These ranges of solidification rate are within those observed in commercial-size ingots. In both alloys, the average dendrite cell size and second phase particle size decreased with increase in average solidification rate and with a decrease in average local solidification time. However, at comparable solidification rates, the dendrite cells and second phase particles are finer in the shorter freezing range alloy 6009 than in the longer freezing range alloy 6016. This is provisionally attributed to the earlier formation of second phase intermetallics at higher temperatures during solidification and to the formation of greater amount of the relatively coarse plate-like ß -phase (Al9Fe2Si4) phases in alloy 6016. In general, in both alloys, the types and relative amounts of the second phase particles in both alloys are independent of solidification rate.

It is uncommon these days to read a business magazine or newspaper without finding a reference to Knowledge Management (KM), and its critical importance to corporate success. One definition of KM is: “getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping them to put information into action in such ways that strive to improve organizational performance.” In the minerals processing industry we could assert that we have been practicing this for years through effective operator training. In most cases we would probably be wrong. Training has certainly filled the need of addressing safety and basic operational issues, but we must collectively focus on education (learning), and the difference, as measured in outcomes, is not at all subtle. This paper briefly examines the history of training and education in the mining industry, and looks in more detail at the impact of one company’s approach to empower its workforce, while keeping the ultimate goal clearly in mind: “The great end of knowledge is not knowledge, but action.” (T.H. Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. The WEMCO Heavy Media Drum Separator was first introduced by WEMCO in California in the 1940`s, initially from their base in San Francisco and later when the company moved to Sacramento. The WEMCO Company became a part of EIMCO Process Equipment in 1985, and in 2002 EIMCO became a part of the GL&V Group when Dorr-Oliver EIMCO was created. Throughout this period of time the WEMCO Drum has been installed on a variety of different applications and is now operating at the heart of many of the world?s largest Minerals and Coal Processing Plants, as well as being used by many smaller producers and metal re-cycling operations. This paper looks at the practical aspects of using WEMCO Drums in a representative range of processing applications.

The tracking of ore through process hold-ups such as stockpiles has been traditionally been difficult to achieve. The inability to pinpoint the exact source in the mine of material that is feeding a processing plant has led to inefficient mine-mill reconciliation processes. In addition, a lack of understanding of the behaviour of ore in process hold-ups such as bins and stockpiles often leads to poor predictions of plant performance and to poor reconciliation of this to the orebody.This paper reports on two short case studies. One case study addresses tracking ore from various parts of two mines to the concentrator. The other follows synthetic particles through the coarse ore stockpile. Both studies use radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracer technology. The paper concludes by discussing general strategies for implementation of such concepts into mine-mill metal accounting and reconciliation systems. As shown in this paper, reliable ore tracking systems will allow much more effective mine-mill reconciliations as well as the ability to model process hold-ups with regard to size by residence time distributions. This should, in turn, allow metallurgists to have a better understanding of the size and grade of material that will report to the plant at different process hold-up (eg stockpile) conditions.

TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. Premier Diamond Mine exploits a kimberlite orebody using cave mining methods. A drilling level is established at the base of a block of ore to effect undercutting that leads to caving of the overlying ore. A second level is developed some 15 metres below the undercutting level to allow extraction of the ore once it has caved. As much as 45 per cent of the rock is removed on the extraction level creating a series of pillars. Undercutting creates abutment stresses, as high as 3 times the virgin stress, which affect the rock mass to a distance of 20 metres from the undercut face on the undercut level and on the extraction level 15 metres below. If the extraction level is completely developed prior to undercutting, where stress levels exceed 20 percent of the rock mass strength, extensive rock mass and support damage occurs as the undercut passes overhead. Rock mass damage takes the form of movement along existing joints and minor shear failure through intact rock. Support damage takes the form of cracking in rigid concrete linings. Where induced stresses exceed 50 per cent of the rock mass strength it is often impractical to keep excavations on the extraction level open. Rock mass damage takes the form of extensive failure of the rock in shear which evidences itself as propagation of the fracture zone around tunnels and footwall heave. Support damage results in destruction of shotcrete linings and concrete footwalls. As the interbolt support fails, badly fractured rock ravels around the steel tendons. Observation and monitoring at Premier Mine and on other cave mines has shown that induced stress levels and consequent damage are a function of :?the extraction ratio on the undercut and extraction level prior to undercutting ?the shape of the undercut face ?the rate of undercut advance ?the distance of leads and lags between adjacent tunnels on the undercut level. To ensure the stability of excavations, all of the above parameters must be carefully planned and the planned mining sequence rigidly enforced. The minimum of development is completed on the extraction level prior to the undercut passing overhead. Required development is then rapidly completed once the area has been de-stressed. Support is installed in three phases: ?Rockbolts are installed as soon as excavations are developed ?Wire mesh, steel tendon straps and a layer of shotcrete sufficient to protect the mesh and straps from damage by blasting and LHD loading is installed as soon as practical thereafter. Inevitably the shotcrete lining has to be replaced once the undercut has passed overhead.. ?Rigid shotcrete linings and concreted footwalls are completed only after the undercut has passed overhead and the area has been de-stressed.

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

[Slide 2] Today’s Topics In my presentation today, I would like to divide my topics into four parts. First of all, I would like to describe the current situation of Japanese non-ferrous metal mining and mineral processing industries in Japan. Secondly, the supply and demand of non-ferrous metals in Japan. Thirdly, I would like to spare some minutes on the overview of overseas development by Japanese mining companies. Finally, since some people may not be sure what the Metal Mining Agency is or what this Agency, I would like to briefly introduce the Metal Mining Agency of Japan.

It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

A novel variation of the GYPCIX process for the treatment of the acid mine effluent water from Grootvlei is described, in which a number of valuable by products can be obtained and the product water can be used for a variety of different purposes. A conceptual case study is presented in which the important cost parameters are described and certain critical path activities are indicated in order to derive a Return on Investment evaluation according to methods previously published. The study indicates that the treatment costs can be dramatically reduced, provided that proper utilization of the by products is taken into account. There are many possible uses for the water. However, by far the most advantageous contribution to the RDP and the best return on capital is derived if the water is used to establish small-lot farming activities providing work opportunities for thousands of people and contributing several hundred million Rands to the GDP. Vastly improved social conditions will be generated in an area of Gauteng that is in danger of rapid deterioration and a contribution will be made to maintaining mining activities in this area. The environmental impact is positive.

Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (D1) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with D1 and the plunge of the F1 fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late D1 . d18O values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

This paper presents a heat conduction model to determine the erosion profile of freeze linings in a ferronickel submerged arc furnace. Kirchhoff transformation was adopted to simplify the nonlinear equation governing heat conduction. The boundary element method (BEM) and Nelder-Mead simplex optimization method were employed to solve an inverse heat conduction problem. Erosion profiles could be obtained when calculated temperatures at sensor locations agreed well with measured temperatures. The model was validated by comparing the heat loss through the linings, which was calculated by BEM and integral operation after erosion profiles were obtained, with the value calculated from industrial data such as actual power consumption, tap-to-tap time, and ferronickel output. The optimal solution for the erosion profile could be acquired when the difference in heat losses calculated by these two methods is at a minimum.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.
