This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and other industries, In this connection, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards' of combustible gases, vapors, and solids and investigates means of controlling and preventing explosions. Many dangers are likely to confront men who must enter a building immediately after it has been damaged. Rescue workers must watch constantly for common gases and vapors that may be present in dangerous concentrations in and about demolished, buildings. Fuel gas is the most common source of danger, although refrigerants, gases from furnaces, flues, fires, sewers, and industrial processes, and gas from bomb, explosions in confined places also constitute definite hazards. To rescuers and trapped casualties, these gases offer the hazards of (1) explosion, (2) toxic effects, including asphyxiation and death, and (3) displacement of air so that the oxygen content of the atmosphere is reduced to or below the danger level.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

The rate of dissolution of solid MgO-C and doloma into liquid in CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-MgO slag at different temperatures was studied under conditions of forced convection by rotating cylindrical refractory specimens in a stationary crucible containing the molten slag. The corrosion rate was calculated from the change in diameter of the cylindrical specimens. Refractory specimens were 13 mm in diameter and 70 mm long. The specimens were rotated for15 to 120 minutes at speeds of 100 to 400 rpm in the molten slag. The rate of corrosion increased with temperature and with the rotating speed of the rod, and decreased when the slag was nearly saturated with MgO. The experimental results confirm the assumption that the diffusion of magnesium oxide through the slag phase boundary layer controls the corrosion process. The corrosion mechanism seems to be the dissolution of the refractory materials into the slag, followed by penetration of pores and grain boundaries and dispersion of the grains in the slag. This report surveys the efforts of six contractors to the U.S. Bureau of Mines with regard to their electromagnetic noise measurement programs. What has been done, what is planned, and evaluations and recommendations are given for each contractor. The main observation is that to date there is not sufficient knowledge of electromagnetic interference in mine environments to design a reliable communication system. This knowledge should be available by the end of June 1972 if certain planned programs are completed successfully. A major effort of this report is to establish parameters to be measured, units to be used, and workable formats for data presentation. This is given in Appendix A. Some details concerning equipment, procedures, locations, and sample data are included in Appendix B.

"Mining conditions in underground coal mines are dictated by the environment in which the coal seams were geologically deposited. Depositional features can change rapidly, significantly affecting mining conditions. Mine geologists understand factors affecting mining conditions, predict future conditions, and provide guidance to mine management. A case study demonstrates how a mine in Appalachia merged an understanding of depositional environments with mining conditions and drilling data to make informed decisions as the mine encountered geologic anomalies. The assessment included drilling, mapping of geologic hazards and mine productivity, and creation of a conceptual depositional model. Metallurgical coal quality and clean tons per foot served as incentives for continued advance. Mining in the south was historically favorable, with good production and advance rates. As mining advanced north, changing geologic conditions caused the upper seam split to abruptly disappear. The mine ramped down into the lower seam split. Mining in the north area encountered unfavorable conditions, including transition roof, “horsebacks,” sandstone intrusions, roof rolls, and bony floor, resulting in low rates of mining advance. The mine geologist characterized the features and created a predictive model for future mining. Most of the adverse conditions were attributed to the coal in the north being part of an incised, transgressive valley fill environment, as compared to the favorable conditions in the south resulting from a floodplain depositional environment. Geologic conditions, low productivity, and unfavorable future predicted conditions in the north ultimately resulted in mine closure and reallocation of resources to a new mine with better forecasted conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe role of a geologist in assisting coal mining operations to understand and predict the impact of varying geological factors on mining productivity is a critical one, especially when management decisions must be made about the future prospects of a mine operating in difficult conditions. Chase, Newman, and Rusnak (2006) provide a very thorough discussion of the evolution of the role of the coal mine geologist and emphasizes the importance of understanding geology with regard to mine management decisions. Using actual mining performance data to determine which geologic factors are the most critical for mining is a powerful tool for making informed mine management decisions. For example, Nelson, Mullennex, and Miller (1988) provide a case study of analyzing the geologic factors impacting productivity of a Kentucky longwall mine to predict future mining conditions for the operation. In that case, the difficult geologic factors for longwall mining were prevalent across much of the remaining permit area and, in response, mine management converted the operation from a longwall operation to a continuous miner (CM) operation to better adapt to the geology. In another example, Keim and Miller (1999) evaluated geologic conditions impacting a West Virginia longwall mine. In both examples, significant geotechnical and geological information was available, including the opportunity to compare predicted mining conditions against actual conditions as mining progressed. Numerous examples of advanced Geologic Hazard Mapping (GHM) methodologies have come from government agencies and academia. For example, development of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system (Molinda and Mark, 1994) provided a standard means for geologists and engineers to communicate quantitatively with regard to mine roof conditions, and the introduction of the Stability Mapping System (SMS) provided an efficient means for analyzing numerous factors affecting coal mine stability (Wang and Heasley, 2005)."

Sublevel stoping (SLS) is one of the oldest and most used methods for underground mining. It relies heavily on the use of drilling and blasting techniques to remove the rock, and gravity to transport the broken rock to drawpoints located at the base of the stope, with LHDs to transport material from the drawpoints. Current SLS operations are based on the assumption of stable geometry of the stope. Thus, the stope design includes the definition of the geometry according to the orebody shape and geomechanical constraints to avoid instability, which may cause excessive dilution. Under some circumstances, dilution could enter the stope due to geotechnical instability, especially when large stope geometries are used. A review of current design and planning practices for large SLS operations indicates that no consideration is given to the material flow and the mixing that occurs after blasting. Material flow could have a large impacton the mixing of ore when grades are heterogeneous in the stope. In this paper, we discuss the influence of gravity flow on the design and planning of large sublevel stopes with and without vertical dilution, based on laboratory experiments. The outcomes of this investigation are used todevelop guidelines towards the design and planning of large SLS mines, which would complement the currently used geotechnical considerations.

This paper describes the evaluation of a limit equilibrium model to simulate the behaviour of crush pillars in platinum mines. An analytical model was derived to calculate the residual average pillar stress (APS) values of the crush pillars. The values predicted by this model were compared to the numerical values obtained from TEXAN simulations. In general, the limit equilibrium model appears to be very attractive for simulating pillar failure as the gradual crushing of the outside of the pillar and the transfer of stress to the intact core can be replicated. The value of the TEXAN crush pillar model was further demonstrated by simulating an idealized layout with crush pillars between two adjacent panels. The simulations illustrated that oversized pillars will not crush close to the face and this may lead to seismic failure in the back area. An important finding of the study is that closure measurements may prove to be a very valuable diagnostic measure in crush pillars layouts. Distinct differences in magnitudes of closure were simulated for a scenario where the pillars crush as expected, compared to the scenario where an oversized pillar is left. Experimental closure data collected in a crush pillar stope provided further evidence regarding the value of closure measurements in these layouts.

It is known that Mg can act as a catalyst/solvent in the high pressure high temperature diamond synthesis. However, above pressure levels of the order of 7 GPa, and temperatures from 1700 ? 1800oC, it was not possible yet to use Mg for the industrial production of diamond. A possible alternative is the use of MgNi based alloys. However, owing to the great Mg reactivity, it was consider, so far, a difficult task to deal with such alloys. The present work presents successful results regarding the production of MgNi alloys, with different composition, at high pressure conditions. The behavior of the alloys and their microstructural characterization is analyzed.

In response to numerous requests for information as to the status of internal-combustion mine locomotives of the Diesel type that use heavy or nonvolatile oil for fuel, with special reference to their safe use in coal mines, the United States Bureau of Mines is issuing this t port. Data were obtained on application of such locomotives to coal mining only in Belgium, France, Germany, and Great Britain. The locomotives are used in coal mining in other countries, as well as in potash, iron, and other kinds of mining, but their chief development has been in coal mining in Germany, France, and Belgium. Recently popular interest in the Diesel type of engine for motive purposes was aroused in this country by the successful application of Diesel engines to railroad locomotives hauling fast transcontinental trains, and, according to published statements, at a low cost of fuel per mile of run.

This paper describes the installation, commissioning and operation of porous plugs featuring nitrogen gas purging in both Anode Furnaces at the Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS), a greenfield copper smelter which commenced operation in March 2015. The decision to install porous plugs was taken in November 2016 and the facilities were successfully commissioned on both anode furnaces in October 2017. The project was successful and has demonstrated the following process improvements: 12.2% reduction in main burner fuel consumption Larger average charge size, due to fewer accretions; 17 minute decrease in average refining cycle times Improvements in slag skimming operations Improved casting rates INTRODUCTION Porous plugs The application of porous plug technology in copper smelter anode furnaces is well established around the world. Vukovic and Gamweger (2017) and Wallner (2004) noted that the stirring and mixing action induced by the injection of inert nitrogen gas into the molten copper via porous plugs has potential benefits in the following areas: Homogenization of the temperature and composition of the molten copper resulting in Reduced fuel consumption Less tendency to overheat slag (reduced risk of refractory attack) Less slag produced with a lower degree of oxidation (lower rate of refractory wear) Less tendency for buildups to form Improved environmental performance (produce low sulphur blister at Peirce Smith converters) Elimination of buildups inside the furnace and potential for larger charges per cycle Reduced processing times and potential for shorter cycle times More efficient skimming of anode slag Shorter skimming time Less copper carry over to Peirce Smith converters Very little slag remaining in the furnace (reduced potential for buildups to form)

The closing of the gap in the European waterway- net is one of the big and challenging traffic projects following the German reunification. The water canals in the North German plain connect the Rhine river, the border between Germany and France, with the Oder, the German border river to Poland. As early as in the 30's of the 19th century the planning and construction of a ship- lift and a canal bridge started, in order to close this last big gap in the system between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe- Havel Canal near Magdeburg. This main waterway connects the West of Germany, known for its coal mines and steel mills, with the capital Berlin, and from there it goes on into Poland. The building activities started in 1934 but came to a complete stop in 1942 because of the war. The communist government in East Germany was not interested in continuing this huge project, including the ship lock Rothensee, the canal bridge crossing the river Elbe, the former border river between West and East Germany, and the lock Hohenwarthe due to lack of political backing along with low construction capacity. Now this important project is in progress and this report describes the special foundation techniques used on the great ship lock Hohenwarthe. Hohenwarthe is a double- bay ship lock of considerable scale, which is notable for recirculating water rather than letting it flow. It includes 44 800 m2 ( 481 720 sq. ft) of up to 55 m ( 180 ft) deep cut- off walls, ground water control, 1248 bored piles with a depth of 22 m ( 72 ft ) serving as foundation and 28 000 m ( 91 864 ft) of soil densification with vibroflotation equipment for ground improvement. In the year 2003 the project shall be completed and all ships can travel from the West to the East through Germany without expensive and time- consuming detours through other canals and locks.

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. Many buildings in Boston are founded on untreated wood piles, which can deteriorate and lose their structural capacity if groundwater levels are lowered below the tops of the piles, exposing the wood to air in the unsaturated soils that surround the piles. The problem of wood pile deterioration due to lowered groundwater levels in Boston first became evident in 1929 following discovery of rotten piles beneath walls of the Boston Public Library building. Repairs to reconstruct the library building?s wood pile foundations were made in 1930 using pit underpinning methods. Today, more than 80 years later, the subsurface conditions beneath several of Boston?s historic neighborhood areas continue to be plagued with low groundwater levels - regrettably resulting in ongoing deterioration to the wood piles that support some of Boston?s oldest and most beautiful buildings. Pit underpinning is still recognized as the preferred approach to repair wood piles and restore uniform foundation support beneath the impacted buildings. This paper provides a brief historical review of the land filling in Boston through the early 1900s that led to the use of wood piles as building foundations. Also discussed is the impact that groundwater level can have on the long term performance of wood pile foundations and the pit underpinning procedures used to reconstruct decayed wood pile foundations in 1930 beneath the Boston Public Library, and today beneath some of Boston?s oldest buildings. Also included are discussions on engineering controls and permitting requirements that help ensure safety and protection to the workers and buildings during underpinning, and some procedures being used to supplement and improve the loading capacity of the reconstructed foundations and facilitate construction of new useable below-grade space.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C. 1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas.
