"In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. Typical concentrations are in the range 50 ppm Mg and 500 ppm Ca (Marticorena et al., 1994, Basilio et al., 1996, Negeri et al., 1997, Nesset et al., 1998)."

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath predominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increasinglY important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations, commenced in the mid 1960's, allow prediction of subsidence in the Southern Coalheld with reasonable confidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of thc subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover.The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidenee of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

The overburden slusher (OS) is proposed as a stripping tool that is expected to find application in overburden stripping operations including open cut coal and oil shale mines. OS is expected to combat the effects of increasing depth on the productivity of conventional dragline stripping.Although previously developed stripping techniques have included the use of drag scrapers the OS is sufficiently different as to constitute a new stripping method.A study undertaken at the University of Queensland during 1985 is believed to be the first major study on the use of the OS and preliminary economic results are very encouraging. It appears that the OS has the capacity to remove overburden at a cheaper unit cost than the equivalent powered dragline stripping machine at any comparable depth of overburden. The OS is not adversely affected by increasing stripping depth to the same extent as a dragline. In addition, the action of the OS machine allows for the lowering of spoil face angles, thereby reducing spoil slope stability problems encountered in deep open cut strip mines.

Smaller, utilitarian projects are equally valuable to developing communities as they seek to develop their own economic and social infrastructures. University research in the U.S. consists of three components; faculty, funding, and graduate students or postdoctorals. Individual faculty is the unit area of research that is not limited, although faculty normally performs research in their areas of expertise. Faculty can and often do join with other faculty in multidisciplinary research. Faculty research achievements or reputation reflects the standing of the program and university. Therefore, research is highly encouraged and regarded within the university community. Graduate students are the work force of faculty research and doctoral students are preferred for high-quality products. The federal government provides the majority of funding sources, with the remainder coming from industry, state government and others. Compared with other engineering majors, the mining engineering programs in the U.S. are unique in that they: ? Are small in terms of the number of programs, and number of faculty and students in each program. ? Serve a single industry (i.e., mining) and are thus cyclic, reflecting the up and down economic state of the mineral industries. Enrollment statistics during the past 70 years show that a cycle consists of approximately 30 years with the first 10 years up, followed by 20 years down. ? Have curriculum designed to emphasize and thus serve for either the coal, hardrock or industrial minerals industries. These unique features make mining engineering programs hard to manage in university environments. Funding for mining research has relied primarily on the federal government, i.e., the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and currently the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The mining industry does not directly perform, nor sponsor research projects. Federal funding provides primarily in-house research. In the last four decades, federal extramural funding was only available when Congress appropriated extra funding in response to mine disasters. For instance, a string of coal mine explosions in the mid to late 1960s prompted Congress to enact the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It provided massive research funding from 1970 to 1983 covering all mining-related subject areas. From 1984 to 1995, federal extramural research funding was minimal, through two generic mineral technology research centers for selected mining engineering programs. In 1995, Congress closed the USBM and transferred the health and safety of miners program to NIOSH. Federally-funded extra-mural research practically stopped from 1995 to 2006. In 2006 and 2007, in response to a series of disasters, including those at Sago, Aracoma, Darby and Crandall Canyon, Congress again appropriated funding for short-term re-search in selected subjected areas such as underground tracking and communication, mine seal and ventilation, and deep cover pillar extraction. Therefore, to develop a meaningful academic mining research program during the past three decades, funding needed to be drawn from other sources such as the mining industries. A ?meaningful? program requires a sufficient amount of consistent funding in order to produce effective results. A review of federally funded extramural research pro-grams shows that a great majority of contractors/grantees are private entities, involving few mining engineering faculty. This, in part, is due to the fact that mining engineering involves so many different subjects. Therefore, a small mining engineering program can only have resources to cover teaching in the core subject areas (i.e., extraction, ground control, ventilation and material handling), at best. In this respect, a successful and meaningful academic mining re-search effort requires strong supporting programs such as geology/geophysics, structural (applied) mechanics, material sciences, compute/software application, etc. Therefore, academic mining research had to rely on private sources such as coal companies, in the author?s case, for sustained funding in the past three decades. Relying on funding from coal companies presents several problems. The projects were small and considered routine consulting projects requiring practical answers in a very short time frame. This is not really suitable for academic research, for which the major goal of research is the training of graduate students. These short-term projects vary with time and mines, most of which are driven by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) or U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM) regulations. So sustained funding under such condition requires broad experience of coal mining operations, which is also not well-aligned for academic research where faculty tends to specialize in a narrow field. Consequently, under such a funding environment, it is important to keep in mind how to develop long-term academic research objectives from conducting small short-term consulting projects that require quick solutions. In other words, how to look beyond the quick answers and to develop broader and more fundamental theories applicable to other situations that advance the-state-of-the-art. In order to achieve this objective, faculty must act as the connecting link because graduate students come and go. Faculty must know the detail of each project such that they know what are the important unsolved problems, what to assign to specific graduate students and how to guide the next group of graduate students to continue the development and advance the mining science. Under such funding environments, the most effective way to conduct academic mining research and ensure quality products is to maintain a research group consisting of postdoctoral, PhD, and MS students of various rankings such that the senior ranks can assist in guiding the junior ranks, especially the senior PhD students who are experts in their dissertation research areas. A weekly meeting should be scheduled for the group in which problems encountered in the research are discussed or individuals take turns presenting the progress of their projects. During each meeting, the importance of open discussion on scientific issues must be emphasized. Thus, opinions are encouraged, debated, and rejected or accepted. Students are encouraged to listen to and analyze other points of view. In addition to training of this thought process, the meeting also helps identify the strengths and weakness of each individual. As the subject of research expands over time, the group?s and, thus, the faculty?s research experience broadens. With this approach, companies can get the quick answer they desire from expert research experience and the faculty can engage in meaningful applied and basic research that is most relevant to routine mine operations. The end result is that companies will have a high regard for academic mining research.

The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

With good planning, the initial cost will be low and your return on investment will be maximized over the long term. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

In December, 1934, Mr. R. Sussex extruded some silver lead alloy wires in order to determine their electrical resistance. After the determinations had been made each wire was threaded through a sheet of paper on which the composition was noted. The wires were placed in a more or less tangled mass in a cupboard in March, 1935. It was not until September, 1936, that they were re-examined, and it was found that during the eighteen months some of the wires had corroded very badly. It was not until March, 1938, that the wires and the corrosion product could be examined, and the results are given in the following pages. It is of interest to note that none of the numerous silver-lead alloys which have been used for creep testing in the rolled condition have shown a similarphenomenon. The silver content of the rolled alloys was, however, never greater than 0·1%.GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE CORRODED WIRESThe wires contained 0·1% up to 28% of silver, and a general examination showed that the corrosion had progressed farther the higher the silver content. This can be seen in Fig. 1, which is a photograph taken in March, 1938, of typical wires at a 'magnification of five diameters. In the early stages the corrosive action seems to be localized and an area of grey, yellow or reddish brown powder appears. The grey corrosion product is by far the one, most frequently seen, and in the later stages the only one visible from the outside. The reddish coloured product is sometimes seen on the residual metallic centre when the grey product has been broken away.The irregular extent of the corrosion can be seen in Fig. 2, which shows (natural size) the 5% silver wire after standing two years. The corroded parts are seen to be much thicker than the slightly corroded ones. The corrosion product, being non-metallic, is quite brittle and falls away from the wire on bending. In the extreme case the' whole wire has corroded and presents a cracked appearance as seen in Fig. 1 (281% silver).An approximate idea of the extent of corrosion can be obtained by measuring the diameter of the corroded part. On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

In fact, the language in The West Virginia Energy Act governing subsidence mirrors that written in the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act as well as other states' statutes. In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

The two contracts of the Big Walnut Augmentation/Rickenbacker Interceptor(BWARI) sewer project for the City of Columbus, Ohio total nearly 35,000 feet of 14and 12-foot diameter tunnel. EPB TBMs will install precast concrete segmental lining through difficult glacial soils ranging from clean granular to hard till with high groundwater and boulders, crossing roads, railroads, and a large stream. Construction of 12 shafts and a large Interconnect Structure involving major ground stabilization work is required. The paper will review design of major project elements and present an update on construction progress.

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

The following data are put together to assist those who are responsible for ordering stores for mines and works. When making out a list of mine stores for a new plant, one can hardly be expected to remember everything, still it is all the more important that articles should not be forgotten, should the mine be situated in an out of the way place, where the manager has to look several weeks ahead. A man who has been accustomed to buy stores on a small scale, from local merchants, where he could pick out personally what he wanted, may suddenly find himself in a place where he has to order wholesale quantities or make out store lists to send contractors for quotations. As it is of course cheaper to purchase stores by the hundredweight, coil, barrel, etc as the case may be, in which they are made up, than to break such a parcel, the way in which the materials are placed on the market is mentioned, so that those who don't know may take full advantage of wholesale terms. The most frequent sizes and brands employed in connection with Australian mining are also mentioned. It would be useless to enumerate all sizes made by the trade, as many would be of no value for our purpose; still I have put down what will serve as a reminder to the manager to mention what size he requires when giving an order, such as the diameter of dynamite cartridges a slight neglect of this sort has often caused serious delay. By mentioning certain brands I do not wish to recommend them in preference to others inadvertently omitted they are simply mentioned as some of those frequently met with.

Navachab Mine experiences difficulties with pit wall stability in certain areas of the mine. The main reason for the instability is the fact that the geology comprises many joints and faults. Blasting, without impacting negatively on the stability of the pit walls, poses a major challenge. The mine has installed a technologically advanced seismic monitoring system with monitoring sensors positioned at various locations and depths throughout the pit. The electronic data recording system records all relevant information on a continuous basis with early warning signals in cases of potential danger. From the information recorded by this micro-seismic system it was established that the energy release into the high-wall is predominantly influenced by the mining rate, water content and mining tempo and to a lesser extent by the blasting operations. To limit the negative effects of blast vibrations, the use of Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was introduced. The optimal delays were determined through signature trace analysis. The vibrations obtained during blasts initiated by means of electronic delay detonators were monitored and compared to those traditionally obtained when standard pyrotechnic delay detonators had been used. The measured vibration data indicated an improvement of 25% to 100% drop in vibration amplitude compared. The accuracy and programmability of EDDs presented huge potential for blast optimization in terms of limiting the vibrations without compromising fragmentation. The whole project was conducted over a twelve week period with some 4000 EDDs. The average size of a blast was in the order of 350 holes using about 40kg explosives per hole, which equates to 14,000 kg explosives over 12 different blasts. The paper deals in detail with the blast optimization process with regard to: - determining the rock response time; - establishing the signature traces; - analyzing the wave interference patterns; - predicting the direction of constructive and destructive wave interferences; - optimizing of the inter-hole and inter-row delay periods; - measuring the ground vibrations. The results obtained during electronic blasting are compared to those obtained during pyrotechnic blasting. Comparisons are being made with regard to the following: - ground vibration measurements; - pit wall stability measurements; - blast safety.

It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

The head loss caused by metallurgical sampling for slurry streams can be reduced by metallurgical sampler design. When the process volumetric flow rate is reduced by vertical static cutters before the sampling by an equal number of moving cutters to the static cutters, the installation requires less installation head space than other sampling arrangements and is easy to accommodate at suitable locations in the process. Low head loss reduces building costs for the processing plant and operational costs during the lifetime of the plant.The presence of a possible systematic bias in the particle size distribution, solids density and elemental composition between an Outotec MSA 2/50 metallurgical slurry sampler sample and MSA 2/50 manually sampled reject have been studied by a customer. The paired samples were taken as simultaneously as possible. The customer evaluated the possible bias using a paired t-test and provided the assay results to Outotec for further evaluation.The results of the paired t-test showed no systematic bias in particle size distribution, solid density or assayed analytes, except in one analyte with low content and a high relative error. The high relative error in one analyte may have been caused by the same calibration model used in a X-ray fluorescence analyser for both high elemental-content concentrate and very low elemental-content tailings samples. The sampled stream is the tailings of a previous process stage.The results of the t-test were studied further using analysis of variance to reveal the error sources in samples. The results showed no bias between the samples collected from the MSA 2/50 reject and composite samples collected of the MSA 2/50 sample stream. The courier online analyser data was also available for evaluation of representativeness to the process stream.The analysis results of the courier online analysis reveals no bias between the MSA 2/50 reject samples, MSA 2/50 sample stream composite samples and online analysis results during the comparative sample collection period.CITATION:Loimi, J, Minkkinen, P and Korpela, T, 2017. Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.
