"The technologies used in the mineral processing of ores are being increasingly applied to the identification and remediation of metal contaminated industrial, military and landfill sites. The objective of mineral processing treatment of contaminated site material is to restore the value of the land and to concentrate the contaminants into a very small volume of separated material which, depending upon its nature, can be further processed, marketed, or sent to a landfill. A systematic characterisation of the site material is first undertaken. Bench and pilot testing follows to evaluate criteria for metal separation. The testing may examine one or more physical or physico-chemical reprocessing methods, singly or in combination, for the remediation of the test samples. These mineral processing tests determine the % metal removal fiom the soil and the contaminants concentrated from the medium. The usefulness of mineral processing testing for site remediation flowsheet design and execution is illustrated by the case studies presented. This paper will present the test results of three case studies: an industrial site decontamination, the cleanup of a small arms firing range, and the reclamation of property within a landfill.INTRODUCTIONEnvironmental legislation and our society’s quest for a cleaner environment has led to the application of mineral processing expertise and technology for industrial site decontamination, military site cleanup and landfill reclamation. Although the required level of decontamination varies between jurisdictions, a site becomes a candidate for decontamination once the contaminant concentrations are found to exceed the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) Interim Remediation Criteria for soil (decommissioning guidelines) or applicable provincial guidelines. The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (Pennsylvania) and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 11 (Alabama). While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (percent IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low-temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. A total of 117 slope stabilization drilled piers were installed as part of a major hillside revitalization project. The 110-million dollar development, known as Stratford at Kenwood, included an 18-story upscale senior residential tower, a 3-story healthcare building, and 4-story condominium buildings, offering approximately 580,000 square feet of living space with panoramic views of Downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. In an effort to establish a flatter hillside plateau for the new 4-story condominium and to create a cut and fill balanced jobsite environment, an 800-foot long row of drilled piers and a 600-foot long multi-tiered shear key system was used to terrace existing 1.5H to 3H: 1V steep slopes and support the new fill. These slope stabilization features reduced the amount of spoils needed to be wasted off-site and mitigated the risk of slope instability. An ODOT/FHWA research indicated that spacing of stabilization piers and necessity of top-connecting elements are highly dependent on pier diameter, spacing, soil type, depth to potential failure surface, surcharge loads, and pier deflection. Due to pre-existing deep buried swales, various load combinations, and the complex mechanism of soil arching effects between adjacent piers, both analytical and numerical computer modeling was performed to estimate the loading on each pier. New generation multiplexed, 3-Dimensional, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System based inclinometers were installed between selected piers to confirm the pier design, and monitor the fill placement, as well as long-term slope stability.

Experiments were conducted al temperatures of 480° to 800° C. and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. to determine the effect of coal residence time on the conversion of a high-volatile bituminous C coal to liquid and gaseous products when using a semicontinuous apparatus designed fur rapid heating and cooling of reactants. The objective of the studies at high temperatures was to determine if appreciable quantities of coal could be converted to gaseous hydrocarbons and low-boiling liquid hydrocarbons. Experiments at lower temperatures were designed to indicate shifts in product distribution with respect to temperature and to learn more about the general mechanism of the reaction when using close control of coal residence time. One percent molybdenum, based on m.a.f. (moisture-and ash-free) coal, was used throughout this investigation. At 800° C., 6,000 p.s.i.g., and "zero" residence time) the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was about 38 percent and the yield of oil about 4.5 percent, based on m.a.f. coal. With IS minutes residence time, under the same conditions, the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was approximately 80 percent with no increase in yield of oil. Apparently at 800° C., and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. coal was rapidly carbonized to char with expulsion of volatiles. Char was then slowly hydrogenated to gaseous hydrocarbons without production of oil.

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

On Aug. 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the city of Richmond, VA. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This article describes the fast track design, bidding and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft-sinking methods and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, VA with up to 305 mm (12 in.) of rain that, in some areas, caused widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed and caused local combined sewer and stormwater flooding. The collapsed sewer was a 2.4-m x 76-mm (8-ft- x 3-in.-) wide by 2.7-m- x 152-mm- (9-ft- x 6 in.-) high arch sewer that was constructed in the 1920s and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to cur-rent elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately 18 m (60 ft ) deep and 31 m (100 ft) in diameter. This caused the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage, contaminated floodwaters reached depths in low-lying areas in excess of 8 m (25 ft).

Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Understanding the effects of the bench on ground motion can improve the design of cast blasts and achieve improved blast efficiency while remaining below vibration requirements. A new dataset recorded in September 2003 from a coal mine in Arizona has allowed us to examine the excitation of short-period Rayleigh-type surface waves from four simultaneously-detonated explosions in and below a topographic bench of a mine. The explosions were recorded on a network of over 150 seismic sensors, providing an extensive understanding of the ground motion radiation patterns from these explosions. We detonated two separate explosions (~3 tons and ~1.5 tons ANFO) in the deepest pit of the mine, thus the explosions were shot to solid rock. Within 25 meters of these two explosions, we detonated two additional explosions of similar explosive yields in a bench, thus these explosions were shot to the free face. Radiation patterns and spectral ratios from the explosions show increased amplitudes (by a factor of 1.5 to 2) at azimuths behind the bench relative to the amplitudes in front of the bench. We compared these findings to seismic observations from two ~1.5 million pound cast blasts at the same mine and found similar radiation patterns. Modeling of these blasts shows that the variations in ground motion are caused by the topographic bench as a result of 1) horizontal spalling of the rock falling into the pit and 2) non- linear scattering near the free- face. We also note that shooting to a buffer (previously blasted rock) causes the azimuthal variations to be significantly reduced.

Electrical impedance tomographic methods have been applied to a variety of mineral and chemical processes in the laboratory and on plant. This review paper surveys technical developments in measurement methods to enable quantitative extraction of key process information in the form of mapping of concentration profiles, mixture homogeneity and suspension velocity. The methods for determining velocity are summarized, since this is of especial interest when applied to opaque systems where most conventional optically based measurements fail. A recent significant development is the use of ultra-high speed measurement that now allows velocity vectors to be extracted for fast moving mixtures and fluids (up to several metres per second). New data are reported pertinent to low and high solids concentration flow in pipelines. Use of the methods offer improvements to design of such systems but also points to the use of tomographic electrical sensor as online flow measurement and fault detection. This offers new opportunities for applications and benefits in the design and monitoring of mineral slurries and sludges.

The ability to respond tactically to changes in environment, like the unprecedented five-month strike in 2014 on the platinum belt following the 2012 Marikana incident, is a measure of the flexibility of the plan given the agreed strategy.This paper describes the Lonmin process of linking company strategy with long-term planning, tactical planning, and the execution of the plan through an annual planning cycle to maximize organizational flexibility. This flexibility enables mining companies to respond to the many internal and external forces that impact on both strategy formulation and delivery of results that meet shareholder expectations."

The fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mining model has significant implications for the industry as it plays an important role in fulfilling the economic, social and workforce needs of the contemporary mining industry. It has increasingly been adopted in countries such as Canada and Australia, but is the current nature of the FIFO model challenging the place women have achieved in the mining workforce? Research in the mining and oil and gas industries reveals that major sources of stress for fly-in-fly-out mining workers are the times of parting and of reunion, the challenges in defining roles within the family, parenting, and conflict between spouses over the use of the leave time and money. So how are women in the industry coping with the FIFO schedules and consequent intermittent relationship with families and partners? How is the mining industry adapting to recruit and maintain female employees in FIFO operations? This paper describes an exploratory study conducted in Canada, which intended to provide some initial insights that might help us answer the questions above. There are several inferences made from this exploratory study. It is clear that FIFO poses significant challenges for both female and male workers. It is largely seen as rigid, extremely challenging for employees with young families and workers who are single mothers, and it is generally incompatible with starting a family and caring for small children. FIFO creates severe stress on relationships and on workers psychological well-being. It seems to be indeed harder for women, since they are often in lower paying positions and therefore have less financial reward for the FIFO lifestyle. On the other hand, FIFO creates the opportunity for young women, including Aboriginal women, to jump-start their careers, as well as opportunities for mature women to work while pursuing other personal interests during their time off. This paper concludes with recommendations to improve the FIFO system in order to increase the ability of mining companies to hire and retain women

Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.

A series of five signature holes were blasted at the Highvale Mine and the resultant seismic data was analyzed to make recommendations on how best to address neighbour complaints regarding blast vibrations. From an analysis of peak vibration levels measured at the closest neighbour for blasting during 2016, it was determined that the blast vibration intensity varied between 1.4 to 4.3 mm/sec (0.06-0.17 ins./sec.), well below the level of concern for the onset of minor damage to residential structures, however, the frequency of the blast vibrations was between 2.2 and 9.7 Hz, which is within the range of the natural resonant frequency for a single story home. This was determined to be the cause of the neighbour complaints, as the home would be responding to the blast vibrations.

The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine is located at the head of the Waite kauri Ri ver, 8 km northwest of Waihi near the southern end of the Coromandel Range. The mine produces gold and silver from epithermal veins hosted by Miocene andesitic flows and pyroclastics of the Coromandel Group. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company Ltd (20 per cent). Mining is by open pit and underground methods. Mineralisation in a near-surface sheeted/stockworked vein zone is mined from the open pit. The deeper Empire Vein System is mined from underground where higher grade mineralisation is restricted to generally discrete veins. The open pit stockwork zone is west of and offset from the updip trend of the Empire Vein System. The Empire (hangingwall) Vein strikes generally north-northeast and dips steeply west. Dips become subvertical at greater depth. The hangingwall vein is a well developed, generally continuous structure with relatively high gold grades. A complex footwall vein system forms shallow west-dipping offshoots to the hangingwall vein. Structure and gold grades become increasingly erratic away from the hangingwall vein. The better developed footwall veins carry economic grades and high 'spot' grades over 50 g/t Au are not uncommon. Highest gold grades are associated with tightly crustiform banded sections of quartz veins and with dark fine grained siliceous breccias. The main hangingwall vein occupies a major north-northeast trending fault structure, the Empire Fault. Footwall veining forms within subordinate splinter fault zones. There has been extensive multidirectional pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation faulting. Fault manifestation is highly dependent on host rock characteristics. The central part of the hangingwall vein and surrounding silicified country rock has been shattered by a major fault structure, the West Mine Fault, forming a poorly consolidated, blocky quartz-breccia ore zone. Away from the more brittle ore zones and associated silicified envelope, wide clay-filled shears mark the major fault trends. Development of the deposit is considered to have occurred in two distinct stages related to separate episodes of dilational jog movement on the Empire Fault. The first phase reactivated the pre-existing Empire Fault as a dilational fissure with subordinate splinters on the footwall side. The Empire Vein System (hangingwall and associated footwall veining) formed during this phase. A second phase of renewed movement with further dilation resulted in more extensive fracturing of the Empire Vein and surrounding country rock and formed the sheeted/stockwork veining of the open pit. An upwards/westward migration of the hydrothermal system is assumed but fluid pathways between underground and open pit veining are unclear. Ore extraction and mining geology methods have responded to improved understanding of the grade and structural variability, and changing ground conditions inherent in the vein system. The underground mine produces ore from flatback cut and fill, post-pillar and bench stopes. Open pit and underground ores are campaign milled through a conventional CIP plant.
