It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

The primary crusher is a key component in the comminution process applied in open pit mines. A collaborative research project between the University of British Columbia and Highland Valley Copper (HVC) was conducted aiming at understanding gyratory crusher liner wear in the overall context of the crushing process. This paper presents an analysis methodology applied to data collected using a laser-based tool for assessing wear in gyratory crushers. Data from the wear measurements was correlated with crusher production information such as current draw and throughput. As a result of the knowledge developed during this work, an innovative way to evaluate crusher liner profiles was created and new mantle profiles were designed. This led to a reformulation of HVC’s standard liner management policy with a resulting estimated annual savings of 13% in total crusher liner cost and a 15% reduction in liner replacement downtime.

"This paper describes the modifications made to the Fox Mine copper concentrate bin in order to obtain a continuous flow condition. The design of these modifications is based on test results obtained on Fox Mine concentrate using the flow factor testing machine in the research facilities of Cominco at Trail, B.C.The original design consisted of a cylindrical steel bin on a concrete slab with two slot-discharge openings. Based on predictions of the maximum mass flow hopper angle for conical and wedge shaped hoppers for the concentrate on various potential bin lining materials, Ultra-High Molecular Weight (UHMW) Polymer was selected as a liner.Using the recommended angles for conical and wedge shaped hoppers, the profile of the bin base was changed to suit the existing slot openings.The initial method of fastening the liner resulted in failure of the connections. Subsequent modification to the zinc concentrate bin fastener system proved satisfactory and it has now been in operation for over one year without any separation of the lining material.Utilization of flow testing procedures on concentrate samples has demonstrated that proper design of storage bins or hoppers to achieve continuous flow can be incorporated into the design of new plants."

What will this deal do to the company’s stock price? This question arises when a publicly traded mining company is presented with a new mine project, or business combination. The standard tool for addressing this question is to use discounted cash flow analysis, or net asset value(NAV), which is discounted cash flow net of liabilities. Cash flow-based analysis is invaluable for assessing project costs and other impacts on debt service capacity and internal rates of return. But cash flow analysis and NAV do not work very well for stock price analysis.

This paper deals with the analysis of stress condition on the interface between two types of floor rock materials when the vertical stress is larger, or when the horizontal stress is larger in a rectangular opening. It indicates that the floor Failure and the failure stress of floor rocks are closely related. It also demonstrates that a larger horizontal stress is one of the most important factors in increasing the potential for floor rock failure and floor heave.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

"Kinross’ Paracatu Mine has 20 years of operational success as one of the lowest grade milloperated gold mines in the world. At year end 2005, Paracatu’s Proven and Probable Reserves were 1.18 billion tonnes at a grade of 0.40 g/t Au, containing a total of 15.2 million ounces of gold.In 2005, the plant processed 17 Mt of ore and produced 180,519 ounces of gold at a cash cost of US$274/oz. An investment of US$470 million has been approved to expand production to 61 Mtpa in 2009 which will extend mine life to 2036. During the period from 2009 to 2013 the project is expected to produce an average annual output of approximately 557,000 ounces of gold at an average cost of sales of approximately $230 per ounce.The soft, friable ore containing readily leachable gold associated with sulphides lends itself to simple processing. The process flowsheet consists of crushing, grinding, gravity recovery, flotation, concentrate leach and carbon adsorption to produce bullion bars. This paper describes the current operation, the deposit’s unique metallurgical features and the future expansion plant that has been designed to optimise recovery of gold.INTRODUCTIONRio Paracatu Mineração (RPM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation, operates the Paracatu mine. The mine is located in Brazil, 230 km south west of Brasilia in the north west portion of the State of Minas Gerais. Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). "Abstract With the development in the construction of heavily loaded structures, the necessity of pile foundations has increased. For the transfer of heavy loads, it is mandatory that the piles need to be socketed in the underlying rock strata. The load transfer in bored rock socketed piles is by end resistance or the combination of shaft and end resistance which in turn depends on the length of the rock socket. The determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors which affect the pile load transfer mechanism. The effect of all the possible factors involved, need to be studied in proposing guidelines for the design of rock socketing length of the pile. Analyses are carried out using finite element analysis software (PLAXIS 3D Foundation) to understand the influence of the thickness of overlying strata for different socket lengths of piles in weak rock. From the load settlement curves, the influence of the overlying soil on the rock socket length isobserved and an effective rock socket length is proposed.IntroductionThe determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors affecting the pile load transfer mechanism, which sometimes give a better design and sometimes an uneconomical design. Too much socketing length results in more construction time and higher costs. In this paper discussion is made on the settlement results, specifically the influence of overlying sand of different densities above a weak rock. The influence of stress developed is not discussed, keeping in mind the size of the paper under study."

"In a previous presentation at the CMP, evidence was shown for the formation of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in self-heating experiments on pyrrhotite-rich samples (Somot and Finch, 2006). Oxidation of H2S is strongly exothermic leading to the proposition that H2S is playing a key role in the self-heating process. Subsequently, tests in two weathering apparatus (I and II) were run under varying oxygen levels to further examine conditions leading to self-heating. To characterise their resulting self-heating capacity the samples from the weathering tests were subjected to a modified Stage B test using the self-heating apparatus developed by Rosenblum and co-workers (Rosenblum and Spira, 1995; Rosenblum et al., 2001). Results showed highest self-heating after weathering occurs under low oxygen conditions, supporting the H2S hypothesis. It was observed that highest heating rates are not directly related to highest weight gains of samples.INTRODUCTION“Sulphides” refer to several types of minerals containing sulphur in its lowest oxidation state of - 2. Self-heating is the spontaneous heating of a material without external heat input. It is well established that some sulphides will self-heat on exposure to moisture and oxygen (Farnsworth, 1977; Good, 1977; Rosenblum et al., 2001; Wu and Li, 2005). This process is highly exothermic and if the heat generated is not dissipated, combustion may occur when the temperature reaches the ignition point of the sulphide (typically 350-400 °C). The hazards of sulphide self-heating range from handling hot material, to sulphur dioxide release, to fires. The literature documents self-heating incidents underground, on ships and trucks transporting sulphide concentrates, and in mine waste (tailing) disposal areas (Stachulak, 1990; Lukaszewski, 1969; Headley et al., 1977). Lukaszewski (1969), Farnsworth (1977), and Good (1977) note that sulphide minerals can act as fuel to promote underground mine fires. Based on such findings, sulphide minerals could become classified as hazardous materials, making transport of concentrates and storage of mine waste subject to stricter and more costly regulation. The problem is one the industry is keen to avoid."

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements induced by blasting during the construction of the Istanbul Kadiköy-Kartal metro tunnel which has been driven at a depth of approximately 20-40 m deep under a highly urbanized region of Istanbul city in Turkey. This tunnel is being constructed by a joint venture group. The formation encountered during the construction is classified as hard and strong rock by laboratory and field tests performed by the joint venture group. Within the scope of the study, for the prediction of the peak particle velocity and to determine the slope of the attenuation curves together with the maximum charge per delay for the S4 shaft tunnels and S12 shaft tunnels of this tunnel route, ground vibration components were measured carefully by using four vibration monitors (Instantel Minimate Plus model) during the advancement of the tunnels which required blasting. The particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighbouring buildings, and structures. Also, data pairs of scaled distance and peak particle velocity obtained from 114 records at S4 shaft tunnels and 79 records at S12 shaft tunnels were analysed statistically. Empirical relationships with correlation at the 95 % confidence interval were established for different rock units (diabase and arkose) and suggested for the test sites in order to estimate particle velocity of the ground vibrations.

Mining Lease SML 57 was registered to Mount Kasi on 5 January, 1995. The Mount Kasi gold mine is located in Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island and operated from 1932 to 1946 producing 261,000t of ore at an average grade of 7.5g/t Au. The deposit represents a structurally controlled style of high sulphidation copper gold mineralisation with peripheral low sulphidation mesothermal vein type gold mineralisation. The resource consists of 1,048,000 tonnes of residual soils (eluvium) containing 1.9 g/t Au at 0.5 g/t Au cut off and 1,240,000 tonnes of hard rock at 3.0 g/t Au and 1.0 g/t Au cut. 94 drill holes, 298 auger holes and 85 pits were modelled to outline the resource. 29% of the pits bottomed in mineralisation and it is likely the full thickness of eluvium has been understated. The pit is scheduled to produce 500,000 tonnes of ore per annum to yield 35,000 ounces of gold with an initial 2 years of eluvial ore followed by a further 2 years of hard rock ore. Total capital costs are estimated to be less than 10.0 million dollars with construction planned to commence in 1995. The likelihood of locating further ore is high.

A recurrent concern in mining operations is how to deal with the large volumes of fresh water used which in turn generates large volumes of effluents that have to be treated. Water treatment can focus in one of two main strategies: treat the effluent as it is produced, or use a simulation tool to optimize water use in the process and reduce volume of effluents, contaminants concentrations, operational costs, and so on. This article shows a successful tool developed in Matlab-Simulink® that allows modelling a mining process and simulating potential improvements to evaluate the results. This tool has been proven in Cu-Mo operations and recently it has been used in poly-metallic operations. This article reviews the 4 Key Steps required to achieve our goals: a) Elaboration and verification of the mining Operation?s Block Diagram, based on a field survey; b)Model construction and input flows and qualities in selected streams; c)Model Validation and Simulation of new alternatives like recirculation, changes in reagents and dosage, partial treatment, flows merges/separation, and others; d)Development of the Optimal Solution which consists on determining the CAPEX and OPEX.
